IPod Video Conversion

Hello Everyone,
A friend of mine has a problem with iTunes converting video & audio to play on her 2g iPod Touch. She has a sony viao laptop i don't know which model. I showed her how to use the convert for iPod and iPhone feature under the advanced menu in iTunes to convert some videos she had downloaded. The videos play fine if she just plays them in iTunes itself but when she converts them for the the iPod the video is fine but she has no audio. She can watch the videos but not hear them. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening and how to fix it?
Thanks in advance

i was in your same spot. got an ipod and didnt know how to watch stuff on it. for the most part, quicktime seems useless for what i wanted to do. i started using isquint for demuxing files. havent tried ffmpegx so i can't compair, but isquint is simple and fast. for getting dvd's onto the ipod, i use handbrake.
i found the learning curve kinda steep to be honest. your dealing with screen sizes and formats and bitrates and crap. you might also need some schooling! search the names of those programs on these boards, that will help.
or hit up these tutorials:

  • Is there a way to stop and then resume an ipod video conversion process?

I am trying to convert videos to play on my new iPod Classic. The conversion process is painfully slow. I need to move the computer. Is there a way to stop the conversion process and then resume it later where you left off? The only way I have been able to figure it out is to put the laptop to sleep and then open it up later to resume. This is a problem too as I have an external USB drive hanging off the side. Any ideas?
Thanks all in advance for your help.

AFAIk you can just uninstall Thunderbird and reinstall. The profile will not be deleted. If you want to make sure, however, make a backup of your profile folder first.
Read up on "backup", e.g. here : http://email.about.com/od/mozillathunderbirdtips/qt/et_backup_prof.htm
(google is your friend :9 )
P.S. _ Matter of fact you should regularly backup your data (e.g. your thunderbirdprofile) to some place different so as not to loose it all, if a thunderbird-bug/virus/windows-failure/Layer8-Problem corrupts your data.

  • Best video to ipod video converter software

What is the best program I can buy for coverting my dvd's and other videos (including recorded tv shows on my dvr) to ipod video? Thanks.

Hopefully in answer to the many posts on “how to get various video formats onto your iPod” I have put together a summary of applications I use. I have tried a few others with varying amounts of success (some of which are free) - I have finally plumped for the software produced by Xilisoft as providing good quality video relatively affordable cost for use withPC’s and numerous MS operating systems. The link below takes you to their site which not only allows you to download trail versions of their software but also has a comprehensive set of tutorials and FAQ's for their iPod video conversion software.
I have regularly used these applications to convert various file formats to iPod friendly video. They are simple to use although frequently processor and RAM hungry:
Use Xilisoft iPod Video Converter if you want to:
[*]Convert various video file formats to MP4
[*]Convert most audio file formats to MP3
[*]Extract audio from video file and save to MP3
    [*]Encode several files simultaneously
[*]Pause encoding process to run other CPU time consuming programs at any time
    Supported file formats:
    Video:
    [*]MPEG(mpg, mpeg, dat, vob); WMV; ASF; AVI; QuichTime(mov, qt); MPEG4(mp4); 3GP; DV(dv,
    dif); Real Video(rm); Animated GIF(gif - decoding only); Macromedia Flash(swf - decoding
    audio only);
    Audio:
[*]MPEG Audio(mp2, mp3); WMA; WAV; AU; MPEG4 Audio(m4a); Real Audio(ra); OGG; AAC; Raw
    AC3(ac3); NUT Open Container Format(nut);
To convert DVD's to an iPod friendly video format:
Use Xilisoft DVD to iPod V4:
[*]Just pop the DVD in your drive select compression variables (default settings work well) and sit back!
All these products are available on a "try before you buy basis", yes there are applications for XP which are free but and may work just as well but I have converted many hours of video for my iPod without hassle using the Xilisoft products (no I don't work for them!). Check there web site HERE

  • Regarding ipod video mpeg 4 conversions

Hi everyone, please if anyone call help me, i would be greatly appreciative. I just purchased the quicktime pro 7 update/registration and i tried to export an mpeg that i have to mpeg4 (which is required to play on the ipod video). Everything converted to mpeg 4 properly, only that there is no sound playing on the newly formatted video.
What did i do wrong, what do i have to do to fix it or what should i do at all? Please, if anyone knows how to help, could you offer me some advice?
    Thank you.

I found the directions below on the PSP Video 9 Forum last night & they worked like a charm for me. I was able to convert my mpeg video so both sound & picture played on my ipod. You do have to go to the videra site & download the free software first. I also paid for the Quictime pro 7 thinking it would convert sound & picture & it doesn't. Hope the post below helps.
    Configuring videora converter
    0) Start Videora iPod converter.
    1) Click setup in the left nav.
    1.5) Click the profiles tab.
    2) Click new profile.
    3) Now, configure that profile:
    profile name: ipod
    in the video settings section...
    mode: MPEG-4 > CBR
    resolution: 320x240
    passes: one
bitrate: 768 kbps (384 kbps also works)
    framerate: 29.97 fps
    in the audio settings section...
    bitrate: 128 kbps
    sample rate: Input
    channels: stereo
    4) Click apply to save the profile.
    Now, you're ready to transcode.
    1) Click convert on the left nav.
    2) Click the transcode new video button.
    3) Pick your source video. Mine was an AVI from a torrent.
    4) Under quality profile, choose "ipod", the profile you created using the steps above.
    5) Click start.
Now you're ready to get the video on your ipod
    1) In iTunes, under the File menu, select add file to library. Find the transcoded one. By default, the transcoded videos pop out under the Videora install directory.
    2) Drag and drop to your ipod.
    Questions/observations:
    1) I haven't been able to get H264 anything to work. Is it broken? How much smaller than MPEG4 is it?
    2) 768 kbps video was about 400 megs/hour; 384 kbps video was about 231 megs/hour. I could readily see a difference in video quality.

  • Ipod Video (Videora) Conversions

Hi. I have recently purchased an ipod video. The videos from the music store uploaded, and last night i downloaded videora to convert my other videos. All of the videos were WinAmp media files, and a qeued all of them to trancode while i was sleeping. When i woke up, 7 videos were in the videos folder, and i tried to add them all to itunes. 5 of the videos successfully went into itunes, and two did not. I am extremely confused as to why. I went on the forums, and wondered if maybe i needed to convert these into quicktime-type files. However, i was unable to find any free programs for this. Could anyone help?

i had the same problem too... i'm also not sure why that happens, but there is a new article about converting video on ilounge.com. you may have a problem that they are talking about regarding the total number of pixel being too many for the ipod to read.
i haven't got my replacement ipod back from apple for warranty yet so i haven't been able to play around with videora for almost 3 weeks. let me know if you figure it out.

  • My ipod video....

my ipod video wont load the videos i have in itunes

In order for video to be synced to your iPod, the video files must meet or be within the following specifications:
H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
Something about your video files does not meet the criteria above.
If you read through similar posts in Apple Discussions, you can find topics related to various conversion utilities that you can use to convert your video files into an acceptable format.

  • I cannot copy mp4 video files to my iPod video

I am having a problem with my 6-month old (6 months since I bought it) iPod Video. Before, I was using iTunes 6.0.0.18 (earlier relase of iTunes), which was installed from the CD included in my iPod. I didn't have a problem except that that version of iTunes does not have video conversion functionality to formats that iPod supports (to .m4v format) so I decided to upgrade to the latest version of iTunes (v6.0.5.20) to achieve this. When I upgraded, it created a new problem - for some reason that I don't know, I can no longer drag .mp4 files to my iPod. Everytime I drag a .mp4 video to my iPod, I'm getting an error message - "Some songs in the iTunes music library, including the song "xxxx", were not copied to iPod "xxxx" because they cannot be played on this iPod.". Can you help with that? Thanks

That error is saying that the format can not be read on your iPod.I get this message when adding my video's to iTunes. So you need to convert them here are converters

  • How do I import MP3 files to itunes and then downloand them to iPOD Video

I have just recently acquired a 60Gb ipod video and I have folder with the name of artist with MP3 format music files on my hard drive. How do I copy them to itunes and the ipod in MP3 format and if they need to be converted into another format to itunes and the the ipod, please advise me how I convert them. My email address is [email protected] for sending copies of your reply to this posting. Many thanks

    mondrayuk,
    - Open iTunes
    - File=>Add Folder
    - Browse to the location of the MP3 folder
    - Click OK
Depending on how you prefer iTunes to manage your Library, wither the files will be copied to the default iTunes music folder and a reference will be created within iTunes,
    -OR-
Just a reference will be created within iTunes to the current location of the MP3 files without a copy made in the iTunes folder.
iTunes and the iPod can play MP3 music files. No conversion is required.
Most of us here do not respond via email. Hope you understand....

  • Use QuickTime Player to convert movies to iPod video format......

I don't know if this has been posted but, thought everyone might find it useful.
You can convert quicktime movies to readable ipod video format without having to purchase Quicktime Pro. Thats right, just the Quicktime player.
Now, I know that you can use Handbrake along with other converter programs for free. but just in case you want to use Quicktime Player here is a link that will show you how via applescript or automator.
    http://www.cs.brandeis.edu/~ari/scripts/Quicktime2iTunesVideo.html

Here's a step-by-step of ONE of the ways (I have a Mac) you can convert your videos (mpgs) to mpeg4 files to view on your 5th gen iPods so your videos will have sound:
I use Mpeg streamclip found on www.squared5.com.
(This is from memory and I don't have the program opened in front of me so apologies if this is not totally accurate!)
Once you've installed Mpeg streamclip, and opened up a new window, drag the mpg file you want converted onto the new window. You should now see the first clip of your video in the window.
Go to File and choose "Export to MPEG4". This will open up another window. Click the button "iPod" on the upper right corner of the window and that will automatically input the settings for an iPod. Then click the button "Export to MPEG4" at the lower right corner of the window. You have to choose where you want your file saved. I just place them in the Videos folder of my hard drive. Then this will start the conversion of your mpg.
Depending on how large your file is, this may take awhile.
When the conversion is complete, simply take your new file (now with ".mpeg4" as an extension) and DRAG it into your iTunes library. I don't remember if you have to actually drag it onto your iPod as well.
As you drag the mpeg4 file onto your iPod, it should say "updating song" at the top of you iTunes window, then you know it worked.
So now you have a VIDEO on your iPod that plays SOUND!!
    Hope this was helpful.

  • Convert DV File to iPod Video with Chapters

    Hi All,
My question is simple. I have a project in FCP Suite that I want to export to an iPod with chapters. I subscribe to Podcasts that have chapters in them such as Photoshop TV.
I have exported to a DV stream from the timeline, and viewed the DV file in QuickTime player to verify that the chapters are in fact still there which they are. When converting from DV, what do I need to do to convert to a format suitable for an iPod Video with the chapters still intact so I can easily skip around on my iPod like a DVD player can. Nothing I do seems to carry the chapter markers over in the conversion process.

    Michael (and George)-
We've been creating the same m4v files with similar software to George's (FC5 and Compressor2) and while we can place chapter markers in the m4v file, and that file will acurately use the markers when played in QuickTime on the computer, once the file is sent to Video iPod, the markers are not very accurate, missing the marked frame by up to 2 sec. Has it been your experience when using this feature in Compressor 3 that these markers are spot on? Would certainly appreciate your input on this,
    Greg M

  • Video Conversion Issue

Hi there, I just got my 30GB iPod Video a couple days ago, and when trying to convert certain movies onto it, it didn't convert with sound.
I selected the Video for conversion
the Video was converted, but now will not playback on iTunes or my iPod with sound at all.
I need some help with what might be going on here.
    Thanks a lot!
    -Steve

Was your original file before conversion MUXed (aka multiplexed)?
If so, it may not convert correctly or at all.
I could not find a article directly about the iPod or iTunes, but this article discusses the issue. NOTE: The three symptoms in the article can be and/or.

  • Video conversion from MPG to MP4 loses its audio

Try to convert a .mpg file to .mp4 (so that you could watch it in your iPod video), iTunes 6.0.2.23 does the conversion but there's no sound, only the video part works. I tried to do the same conversion using QuickTime 7.0.4, again the video part of .mp4 filefine, but the audio part was mute.
Could the iTunes/QuickTime programmer who wrote this conversion routine take a look at this problem.
    Regards,
    Nushin

This is actually by design, not a bug. Albeit a stupid design, IMO.
Quicktime cannot cope with muxed MPEG files. You can work around this shortcoming in many different ways though. I've detailed two of these ways here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1171379&#1171379
