IPod Video; how to use it...

I have absolutely no idea how to put videos on my iPod. What format is needed? Then do I just add a file to my library? etc.etc.

Subscribed to a podcast and downloaded to iTunes, audio/visaual, size 12MB. Converted using H264 320X240 with QuickT and draged it into iTUNES. Synct iPOD and got the message "....cannot be played on this iPOD. "Converted the podcast to mpeg4 with the same result. Did same with Videora, same result. Must a podcast conform to strict file size and formatH264 or MPEG4 mequirements. I checked out podcast file it formated H263 320 X 180 . ANY IDEAS AS TO WHY IT WONT TAKE TO THE iPOD?
Yes, a Podcast is supposed to conform to the normal H.264/AAC (LC) or MPEG4/AAC (LC) iPod requirements. What I don't understand is if you subscribed to a Podcast and it loaded into iTunes, why did you go back and reconvert it for the iPod. If you subscribed correctly, the Podcast should have automatically loaded in iTunes and thereafter loaded to your iPod in your normal auto or manual manner the next time you sync'd (assuming iTunes settings are correct).
As to your conversions, you failed to mention which path and/or settings were employed in your QT Pro conversions. So it is not possible to say whether there is a problem in conversion or one in the movie content. Not all converters work the same way. Some are "loose" and some are "tight" when it comes to the specific program preset strategies. If the content is very complex one application may fail to convert it properly while another, using the same settings, will convert it to an iPod compatible file. In most cases, a bit of tweaking of settings may be all that is needed. On the other hand, if some of your settings do not conform to iPod requirements, then then the conversions will never work.
Here is a URL to my site where I am currently testing my own Podcasts. When I subscribed to the URL using the Advanced menu option in iTunes, my first Podcast downloaded and sync'd to my iPod when I connected it. As additional episodes were added to the site, each in turn loaded to iTunes the next time it was opened and again loaded to my iPod when it was next sync'd. However, I am not sure how this is supposed to work when more than one new episode is available as with a new subscriber. In any case, if interested, you can simply subscribe in iTunes or open the page in your browser and view or download the files manually to see if they will play on your iPod.

  • IPod Video - how do I download dvd's?

How do I download dvd's onto my iPod? Do I need special software? Many Thanks.

You need a 3rd party converter to convert the file with both audio and video.
See this for help: Guide to converting video for iPod (Mac/Windows).
Be aware that this question will attract the spammers who infect these forums and are trying to sell you something. You don't need to but anything, and there are many free converters in the link I provided.

  • Ipod Video: How do I move videos to "music video" folder??

When I convert my videos to itunes, they all go to the Video folder. How can I move videos to music video folder?

If you right click on one, select 'get info', then select 'options', then in the box marked 'video kind' select 'music video'. Is this what you mean?

  • Reformat 60g ipod video for windows

I would like to reformat a recently purchased ipod already mac formatted (and loaded with files) to windows. The idea would be to use the ipod and itunes with both pc and mac.
I haven't purchased any songs from itunes and plan to use my existing music as mp3s rather than m4p or m4a on the ipod.
I have an external hard drive (formatted fat32) which can be used to back up music/video files which reside on the mac computer (and are also present on the ipod), transfer them over to the pc, then back onto the ipod again after formatting.
I've read that apple does not officially support a windows formatted ipod to be used on a mac. I've also read that using an ipod formatted fat32 on a mac slows down read/write in itunes, etc, but not sure if that also applies to the latest ipod video units.
Can someone verify this? I would like to be able to use the ipod on both platforms.
Can I just format the ipod with windows into fat32, or do I have to use the apple software to do this?
Would using the ipod like this be more trouble than it is worth?
    dell   Windows XP

    Thank you Niel.
I have an old winme computer that I've been using to format my external hard drives to FAT32 and have had success for 200g and 300gb drives which xp and mac then recognize, but there probably is some advantage in using Apple's refomating software for the ipod, so I will use that.
The ipod will be used on both xp and mac. I came across a post regarding using one of the older ipods formated in FAT32 and how that file system slowed certain functions with the mac as opposed to HFS formatted ipod and was wondering if anybody has experienced this with the ipod video.
When using ipod with both xp and mac, are there any other issues to be concerned with, like syncing with itunes, etc?

  • Ipod Video, 1.2.3 Sync problem

    Hi all,
I have a 60Go Ipod video. I use it like external drive on windows and mac. So it uses PC firmware. I update it with 1.2.3 firmware and now when I sync it with my mac (Leopard 10.5.2) a lot of tracks are not playable (just pass it), Playlist are empty and no podcast are visible from the Ipod. But from itunes, I can play music directly on the Ipod, playlist are visible, all seems to be correct...
So I think my files are not corrupted.
Those music comes from ITSM and my ITunes is registered with my Apple Id.
If I install mac firmware, all is OK. But I can't use my ipod on windows.
If I sync from windows, all seems ok too. But I would like to sync from my MacBook pro.
I don't know what to do. Maybe downgrade it but I would like to find another solution.
    Can some body help me?

I tried to sync with a PC and it works fine. No problem with it.
But I switch for 3month and I don't want to keep windows XP just to sync my ipod...
I have a MacBook pro with Leopard. Itunes and Leopard are up to date.
    Can some body Help me?

  • Kca-ip500 compat. w/ ipod video?

I searched, but didn't find the info I needed. Anyone here know if the kenwood car adapter KCA-IP500 is compatible with ipod video? They don't list it on their website, but I figure it's just too new.
I heard the ipod video and nano use a different protocol for accessing the ipod through the dock... is this true?

I use the same interface to connect the iPod to my Kenwood car head unit.
When connected, my iPod shows a Kenwood logo in the screen and the controls of the iPod are disabled. I then operate the iPod through the car head unit.
I have a car unit with a video screen and have not tried to play movies via the iPod, but as far as I know, you can't operate the iPod independently when connected to the car unit.
Well I can't that's for sure. Maybe your car unit works differently?

  • Do 5th Gen iPod video & 3rd Gen Nano have exactly the same dock connector?

I know I will need a dock plastic adapter thing, which you get it the box of the Nano so am ok there
    cheers

ah I see, so physically they are the same, and wil lfit, but it may be a different matter if they actually work
Ive just put it on a speaker dock I have, and it works fine, wil try it on a iPod dock clock alarm I have as well soon
cheers, I just didt want to push it too hard on incase it was actually a physical different size

  • How do I get songs from iPod(video) to iTunes(7 and using VISTA).

How do I get songs from iPod(video) to iTunes(i'm using iTunes7 and Vista).
I don't have the disc, cause i can't find it. But my computer downloaded the ipod, it just cant find the files?
i've been looking through the topics for the past hour and none of them helped. Maybe i'm stupid i dont really know, but i've restored my old computer a couple times and i found a post and it helped both times. now i can't find it anymore.
THIS IS THE ONE I'VE BEEN SEEING AND IT DOESN'T HELP ME ONE BIT:
Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.
Can someone give me a link, or tell me one that shows step by step.

Here is a way of doing it, for another take on this, search the forum for posts by Zevoneer.
    Copy from iPod to PC
It is important not to allow your iPod to sync with an empty library. If it is set to synchronise automatically you will get a message saying your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to sync – it is important to press cancel as syncing with an empty library erases all music from your iPod.
You can also prevent auto sync by holding down shift & ctrl as you plug in your iPod and keeping the keys held down until the iPod appears in iTunes.
Once you are connected, you need to set your iPod to manage music manually.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61148
If you have an iPod with iTunes Store purchases on it, you can use it to copy your purchases to other authorized computers.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesWin/7.3/en/2586win.html
However this is not allowed for other music.
This MacMuse tip tells you how to copy music from your iPod using Windows Explorer, but it is a bit fiddly:

Otherwise you can use third party software to manage the transfer, there are a variety of programs out there, some free and some that will copy ratings and counts as well as the music files. Here is a selection, check them out and see what suits you.

  • 1 Shuffle, 1 Ipod Video........How can I use both?

My son has a shuffle that was started on his Dad's computer, and I have a Ipod Video that was started on a laptop. I now have a new computer. I found a way to pull the music files off the shuffle (haven't tried the video one yet..has another problem that needs to be fixed) How can I get the shuffle and ipod video to run off the new computer normally?

You just need to make sure that the new computer has all the music on it, and all the software needed...
    iPod Updater
    iTunes
Then simply connect the iPods. They should be recognized and update.
Know that you can use the iPod with video with multiple computers, but you cannot use the iPod shuffle with multiple computers. All your music for the shuffle will need to be on the new computer
