• My daughter has accidentally deleted all videos from her ipod nano - is there a way of retreiving them?

my daughter has accidentally deleted all her videos on her ipod nano - is there any way of retreiving them?

If your daughter owns a 5G Nano (the one with the camera built-in) and she deleted her recorded videos, I'm afraid you are out of luck. There is a small chance that some expensive data recovery solutions can recover some of that, but again the chances are slim.

• Trouble with a new iPod video (and a question)

My new iPod video is causing my computer to freeze when I connect it. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes. After that, it seemed to be going OK, but it only downloaded about 500m (of a total of 50g) before iTunes froze again and stopped downloading (of course the "Do Not Disconnect" icon on the iPod stayed there, but I had no choice but to disconnect it!).
All of my music is on an external Seagate hard drive coming in through one of my USB inputs. The iPod is on the other USB input. Could this be part of the problem? I don't think it's a drive letter issue since it did start downloading the last time before freezing.
Also, I'm wondering if I can use my old firewire cable from my previous iPod to speed up the transfer process once I actually get the thing working.
Any help would be much appreciated!

• How do I get songs from iPod(video) to iTunes(7 and using VISTA).

How do I get songs from iPod(video) to iTunes(i'm using iTunes7 and Vista).
I don't have the disc, cause i can't find it. But my computer downloaded the ipod, it just cant find the files?
i've been looking through the topics for the past hour and none of them helped. Maybe i'm stupid i dont really know, but i've restored my old computer a couple times and i found a post and it helped both times. now i can't find it anymore.
THIS IS THE ONE I'VE BEEN SEEING AND IT DOESN'T HELP ME ONE BIT:
Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

YamiPod Mac and Windows
Music Rescue Mac & Windows
iPodCopy Mac and Windows
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.
Can someone give me a link, or tell me one that shows step by step.

Here is a way of doing it, for another take on this, search the forum for posts by Zevoneer.
Copy from iPod to PC
It is important not to allow your iPod to sync with an empty library. If it is set to synchronise automatically you will get a message saying your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to sync – it is important to press cancel as syncing with an empty library erases all music from your iPod.
You can also prevent auto sync by holding down shift & ctrl as you plug in your iPod and keeping the keys held down until the iPod appears in iTunes.
Once you are connected, you need to set your iPod to manage music manually.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61148
If you have an iPod with iTunes Store purchases on it, you can use it to copy your purchases to other authorized computers.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesWin/7.3/en/2586win.html
However this is not allowed for other music.
This MacMuse tip tells you how to copy music from your iPod using Windows Explorer, but it is a bit fiddly:

Otherwise you can use third party software to manage the transfer, there are a variety of programs out there, some free and some that will copy ratings and counts as well as the music files. Here is a selection, check them out and see what suits you.

If you have made sure that both the iTunes and iPod software are current and have deauthorized and reauthorized your computer, try this test:
1. Deauthorize the computer.
2. Create a new user in the system.
3. Download the free song of the week from the iTMS in the new user account.
4. Play the song in that user account to authorize again.
5. Restore the iPod (using the iPod updater) in the new user account.
6. Sync just the free song of the week and see if it plays on the iPod.
If it does, you appear to have a corrupted iTunes library file, and you should recreate the iTunes library file in your normal user account, and then sync your music back to the iPod and all should be well.

• 30 GB Ipod Video not recognized by either Windows or Itunes

Hi,
I purchased a new 30 GB iPod Video (5th generation) today to replace my old iPod photo. It's been charging for a few hours, but when I plug it into the computer there is hardly any recognition. Windows will make the "you plugged in a USB" noise but that's it. The iPod will not go into "DO NOT DISCONNECT" mode, nor will iTunes recognize the iPod.
iTunes is updated, and I tried many of the tips on the pages here. I've also tried to reset it by holding the menu and enter buttons, and it reset, but there was no recognition. I even tried toggling the hold switch back and forth a few times and I got noting.
I'm seriously perplexed, so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Adam

• BRAND NEW - OUT OF BOX IPOD VIDEO NOT BEING RECOGNIZED BY ITUNES

Alright, the topic basically describes what my problem is. This only pertains to my iPod video. Just bought it, opened it, started up computer and iTunes 7 (just updated) (I've had a nano for 5+ months) and plugged it in. It didn't show up. Didn't appear under devices but Windows does normally recognize it.
Help appreciated. Preferred if responded by email [email protected]
Thanks.

Hey Ethan,
This may be drive letter confusion in Windows. try assigning your video iPod a different drive letter, following these steps:
Log off of any other users on your computer.
1 - Don’t plug in your iPod yet.
2 - Go to "START -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools (if you don't see this, click on "classic view" button on the left panel) -> Computer Management."
3 - Click on the "Disk Management" button in the left panel area.
4 - Now, with "Computer Management" and Control Panel windows opened, reset your iPod, and connect it.
5 - Right-click on your iPod's listing there (after a few moments when it gets recognized in this drive window), and click on "Change Drive letter and Paths". Then the "Change..." button.
Here's what it should look like:
Assign your iPod the letter "M" "N", "O" or the like (further along in the alphabet).

• Made HDD, Battery and case upgrades to my ipod video 5th Gen and now I am told "Connect to your computer.  Use iTunes to restore."

I have a 5th Gen iPod Video that I have had many years now.  It has worked faithfully until about 2 weeks ago and the HDD totally died on me.
So I decided to upgrade from a 30 to 60 gb HDD, replaced the battery for the appropriate HDD and bought a new back shell for the unit.  I made incremental installations as parts arrived.  First the HDD itself and the next day the battery.  Both went in with no problem and I have been running them in a jerry rigged case (basically the 30gb back case has been taped together to make sure it was going to work OK.  I have been taking it to work with absolutely no issues, great response and great battery life.  Synching is fabulous.
Here is the issue, I hope this makes sense...
Today I received my 60 GB silver back cover and moved all of my parts over.  It seems to fit fine.  Headphone jack is working fine.  However, now the hold button is unresponsive (which is not a big loss to me but still just so you know).  I can play music and I can sync.  However, if I restart the unit, or I try synching a second time, I get screen saying "Connect to your computer.  Use iTunes to restore."  It does not matter if I snap it shut or leave the case loose, this happens.
I have this error until I open my case up again and do nothing else.  At that time, the error goes away, and my ipod is fine again.  Then, the screen comes back after restarting to a normal boot.  But, if I sync or restart without doing anything else, we go through the motions again until I open the case back up.
I have disconnected the battery as well as the HDD, but still have the problem.  I have also disconnected the cable coming from the hold button/earphone jack to the M/B,
Has anyone else ever experienced this issue or have any suggestions.

Shouldn't you contact the vendor or person who sold the back cover?  At the very least, it has a Hold switch that doesn't work.
This web site has repair guides
http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod_Original
and they call it "Headphone Jack & Hold Switch"
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPod+5th+Generation+%28Video%29+Headphone+Jack+%26+H old+Switch+Replacement/604
Under Relevant Parts, they seem to list separate parts for the thick and thin back cover.
On a side note, another way to fix your iPod is to use a compact flash card instead of a hard drive.  This web page has details
http://www.instructables.com/id/Convert-your-5th-Gen-iPod-Video-to-use-Flash-Mem or/
Then, you can use your existing thin profile back cover that works.  I replaced the hard drive in my 4th gen iPod with a CF card.  Currently, it is only 8GB, but with lower prices these days, I may soon upgrade it with a 64GB CF card.  But it works great with the 8GB card.  The iPod is noticeably lighter.  There is no hard drive spin-up delay.  The battery lasts longer per charge.  And it is no doubt more shock-resistant.

• IPod video 5th G - Can only load about 15 songs before it crashes and won't allow me to add any more - Is my hard drive broken?

I have an iPod Video, 5th Generation - a few years old aye, but it does the job. Recently it crashed and wouldn't respond at all, I tried the 5 R's and the iPod wouldn't restore at all. Finally I managed to restore it, but then encountered a new problem.
When I try to put new music onto the iPod the maximum I can really add is about 15/16 songs (currently sitting about 112 MB). I can use the iPod just fine with this on it, but I can't add any songs or anything past this limit. I can take songs off and add new ones on, but again cannot pas this limit.
It is a 30GB hard drive, so I should be able to load near enough 30GB onto it.
Whenever I try to pass the limit and add new songs a message saying "Attempting to copy to the disk "RUSSELL'S I" failed. An unknown error occurred (-69).", and then a second message pops up reading "iTunes could not copy "Song" to the iPod because an unknown error occurred (-69)."
Looking to find out, does this mean my Hard Drive is broken/damaged, or could it possibly be a different issue, as buying a new hard drive is reasonably cheap, but if it turns out to be the motherboard or something else then I don't want to have wasted the money buying a new HDD only to find out the problem hasn't been fixed.
Has anyone else had this issue? Or anybody found a way to fix it?
Cheers
Russell

See here: iTunes displays a -69 error when syncing iPod
You can use the disk diagnostic tool built into the iPod's firmware to test the health of it's Hard Drive.  See this post from another forum member turingtest2 on how to do this as well as what the resulting numbers mean.

• IPod Video 5th Generation Upload Video to IPod Problem.

Hi all,
I recently purcase an IPod video, and I have problem with uploading video from Itunes to my IPod. Is working fine when I set it to automatically sync. But when I change the setting to manually and drag the video file into the Movies folder (Itunes) is doesn't seem to be upload to my IPod. Music is working fine. Any one know why.
Thank heaps in advance.
      Windows XP

Well this is a hard one,
You need to do a few things.
First you need to get it ripped in a file format by using questionable-legality software (Cough* like mine*). Or you could use illegal-ish (but not really illegal) software such as Limewire. But if for SOME reason you already have it in that from. Here is what you do.
Download this software.
http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/download.php
It is free and really easy to use. This will convert your movie file to compatible format, MPEG-4 (or Quick-Time).
Ok that was the easy part!
Now you will have to manually set the Audio bit rate to match to Video Bit rate in the Videora. The help tool will show you how to do it. You may get lucky and it will be the get the same bit rate for both. And then you are good to go! (it is worth a try, up to this point, some videos auto convert exactly to try it)
BUT IF NOT: (here we go)
To get the Audio and Video bit rate, change your view mode in the file folder where your original file is located to filmstrips. Now, hover your mouse over the video file, you should see Audio & Video bit rate. If not you will have to fiddle with Videora to get it right. Now change to bit rates in your options in Videora to match the original file. If the audio is off from the video, your sound will lag while your video plays or vise versa. Meaning, at about 5 min your audio could be off by over 45 sec.
Alright, you got your video. Now drag and drop it into Itunes, and drop it into your ipod. There you go! Easy right?
Well if you are lost after the “BUT IF NOT” part and you can’t get it working sufficiently before that point. My suggestion is to give up, unless you are great with computer fiddling.
So all in all it can be done, but it is VERY hard to do! I have done it, but it takes a while to work (2-3 hours-ish).
Hope this helped you, God Life
