IPod Video Storage Question

I have an older 30 GB iPod Video (called the Classic now, I think?). I keep only music on it, and while I've long since outgrown the storage capacity, I like to keep it as full as possible.
I understand that I only have about 28 GB of usable space, but when I sync my music I'm also showing about 1.8 GB of "Other". What is this? Since only music is set to sync the only thing I can think of is album artwork. I feel like there's a way to disallow album art from syncing, but I can't seem to find it.
Any help appreciated.

Hello KeenerKat,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!
The Other section could apply to any Notes, files you may have stored on the iPod (if you have it enabled as an external hard disc), album artwork as you noted, and lastly, some of it is decidicated to the iPod's O/S or software. So basically, there will always be space occupied by this section on your iPod.
If you feel as though the amount of space occupied by the Other section is unusually large (in the GB's) then I would recommend restoring the iPod via iTunes. Of course, much of this space in your case may be applied or due to the album artwork stored on the iPod.
If you have upgraded to iTunes 9, then the option to not include album artwork is no longer available. No word on if it will ever be returned either. You could suggest getting it back to Apple through the link below.

Hope this helps.

  • Ipod video 80GB question

hi every body, i'm new to ipod and i have the ipod video 80gb. i have also macbook pro as i had recintly transfer to apple and i love even though there are a minor problem that i had with the battery before and magsafe now, any way.
i want to know if i can sync the ipod one way as 80gb ipod it is impossible to have 80 gb data on my macbook pro hard disk so i want to upload and delete the files after that and next time i connect i just upload the new items without deleting the items i removed from my itunes, any way?
another thing, i bought the nike+ sensor to use it with ipod video but it seems that it works only with ipod nano, any way to make it work with video.
    thanks in advance and enjoy.

You can keep your music on your ipod and not your computer, but you have a high chance of getting it deleted. Set your ipod to manual update, so the songs wont get erased. But if you dont eject your ipod, or jsut something happens, you wont be able to get your music back.
If you ever need to get the songs from you ipod to computer, use iPodCopy

  • IPod 60gb storage question - filling up too fast?

I have a new 60GB that I just began adding music to. I am confused about the amount of storage I have available. So far (according to the iTunes notes) I have added 93 songs/6.2 hours/427.6mb, using 17.19GB out of 60GB. I am importing using the AAC encoder at 128kbps.
Am I missing something here? I thought the 60GB could hold around 15,000 songs. At this rate, I will fill up the iPod before I hit 1000 songs. I do not have anything else (pics/videos), just music.
Any help would be much appreciated. I am (quite obviously) new to this and can't figure out where I have messed up.
    Thank you!

I was able to answer my own question here...I had just switched some USB cables around, so when I did my normal back-up to my external hard-drive, it ended up backing up to my iPod. Phew! I am embarrassed, but at least it was an easy fix.

  • Use PE Organizer or Lightroom to Catalog Videos + Storage Questions

Hello everyone. I'm re-entering the video arena after several years and have purchased a new entry level HD camcorder and plan on using Premier Elements for editing home videos. Nothing professional, just home movies, youth sports, stuff like that.
I have been an avid stills photographer however and have defined a workflow that I'm comfortable with. With stills - usually RAW files, I import them to an external hard drive first, import them into Lightroom, then proceed to catalog and keyword them appropriately.
Question 1: I know my way around Lightroom and it does allow for the cataloging and keywording of video files. I see that PE 12 has an organizer built into the program. Is there any advantage of me using PE's Organizer over Lightroom? They are all Adobe products, I'm just wondering if there is some sort of integration between PE's Organizer and Editor that will buy me an easier workflow or not. Otherwise I'll just use Lightroom.
Question 2: So a few years back I was taking videos with a DV camcorder, importing the video, editing it, burning a DVD, then deleting the source files AND the finished product that was burned to the DVD. I was certainly a novice and as I became more involved with photography and the technology itself, I came to realize that blowing away the finished product and relying on DVDs as storage was a bad idea. This means for those yesteryear videos I took I must hope a) that the discs never go "bad", which I know now they won't last forever, and b) that I must keep at least some machine around in the next decades that can play these discs. Yes, Blu-Ray players are backward compatible, but who knows in 20 years, right? At some point I'll try and look into capturing those DVDs back to a digital file, but that's besides the point. So I know I do not want to rely on DVDs as a "preservation" or archiving method for finished produced videos. The raw source files I'm not too worried about. I'll keep them around on an external drive and burn them to DVD-R, and worse case I'll have to roll them off the external drive if I run out of space and cannot afford a new drive right away. So my question is: a) what is the best format to store the finished video so that I am not reliant on DVDs as my primary preservation method and b) a format that I can use to re-burn a DVD or Blu-Ray disc later should I need to make additional copies and the original DVD/Blu-Ray disc is no longer available for a straight copy? The "b" portion of this question is of key importance to me right now because while I have a decent Blu-Ray player, I do not have the capabilities to burn a Blu-Ray (or even a DVD for that matter). I plan on getting a Blu-Ray burner within the next 6 months, but until then I will need to create finished videos that will eventually be turned into DVDs/Blu-Rays. What format could I store the finished product in so that I can go back and easily burn video to a DVD or Blu-Ray disc later? I would think the format would be very specific for Blu-Ray burning later especially.
Sorry for the long post. I tried to keep it as short as possible.
    Have a great weekend!

Thanks for the follow ups. Sorry for the delayed response. Was thinking about your questions but got detoured several times.
Let us start with archiving....I do not know that there is a perfect solution with changing times et al.
    1. Project Archiving would appear at face value to be a good choice
    a. preserves your source media that the project file needs to trace back to
    b. preserves the project file with all its edits so that your re-entry into the project will allow you further edits and/or alternative
    export choices.
    c. there is a concern about disc menus in archived projects but you say that the disc menu aspect of the matter is not important to you
ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE12: Archiving Projects With Disc Menus
My main problem with Project Archiver is that you are dependent on being able to open the archived project file in the same version in which it was
created or a later version...the later the version, the more the concern.
    2. When it comes to burn tos DVD, AVCHD, or Blu-ray....VIDEO_TS, BDMV, BDMV & Blu-ray disc image....
    a. The best of all worlds might be accomplished by saving the VIDEO_TS Folder from a burn to folder for DVD and saving the BDMV from a burn to folder for AVCHD. There is no Premiere Elements burn to folder for Blu-ray. Depending on the version of Premiere Elements and the computer operating system, you could try for a burn to Blu-ray disc image with Phantom Burner in conjunction with Premiere Elements.
ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE12: Disc Image/Phantom Burner & PE
I would probably have more confidence on finding a program now or in the future - ImgBurn, Nero...to be available to take the VIDEO_TS, BDMV, or Blu-ray disc image to disc. You might even consider a burn to Blu-ray, followed by copying the BDMV Folder from it for archiving purposes. The video files from VIDEO_TS and BDMV are easily extracted.
    3. If preserving the edited Timeline is the target, then SD project I would probably go with DV AVI standard or widescreen, if HD, probably an AVCHD.mp4 or AVCHD.m2t.
If Premiere Elements versions got stronger on disc image, I suspect I would go that route to preserve a project. Right now, I am doing a mix of all of the above.
As for Lightroom, Elements Organizer, and Premiere Elements. I am not a great fan of Lightroom. Neither am I have heavy user of Elements Organizer. However, I have looked a some Lightroom tryouts along the way to see what it is all about.
    1. With regard to your use of Photoshop Elements 9 plus Lightroom, that seems consistent with the workflows suggested by others and the gains to be gotten in using the best attributes of each.
Integrate Lightroom with Elements – Photoshop Elements User
You would probably get greater advantage using the same version of Elements Organizer as Photoshop Elements for the sake of integration.
Just in case note....Premiere Elements and Photoshop Elements are standalone programs, each coming with its own Elements Organizer. When Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements same versions are on the same computer they share the same Elements Organizer catalog..
    2. For me, Lightroom and Premiere Elements, unlike Photoshop Elements, and video never seemed to integrate well.
The following is a link to some work I did with LIghtroom when I was at a forum that I no longer visit
Lightroom 4.1 Slideshow Module Visited - Elements Village
From my perspective, Premiere Elements integration with Elements Organizer and Photoshop Elements gives me a workflow that meets my needs.
My camera does not record raw image format. But, if I have Camera Raw installed on my computer with Premiere Elements, I can import raw image format and dng as source media into a Premiere Elements project. For edit of the raw image format, I need the Camera Raw dialog which requires the presence of Photoshop Elements which I have.
Please review and consider the above and then let me know if I have targeted your question.
    Thank you.

  • Ipod Shuffle Storage Question

    Hello,
    I own a 2GB 4th Generation IPod Shuffle.
My current playlist is I-Tunes says that I have 132 items with 10.4 hours of content at 1.13 GB.  But when I look at my storage space status on my I-Pod, it says that I am over capacity.
Why does it say I'm over capacity when I'm clearly not?
When syncing my I Pod, I manually manage my music instead of using the Autosync.  Could this be part of the problem/reason?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thank You
PS: I apologize in advance if this question has already been brought up.

    UPDATE.....
Something really screwy is going on here
I got rid of 4 of my songs on my playlist and freed up around 0.03 GB of capacity
I then put those 4 same songs from my library back on my playlist and when I synced it still had that 0.03 GB of free capacity
I also notice that when I download a podcast from the itunes store into my itunes library, the space that the podcast would use up shows up on my ipod capacity bar, eventhough I haven't downloaded it to my ipod yet!!!...wierd.
I wonder if should just delete my entire playlist and create a new one from scratch with the exact same songs.

  • Ipod video screen question

i've noticed that my new ipod has gotten several minor scratches on the screen...but the thing is haven't even touched the screen so how could that be caused?? does anybody know how much it would cost to have the screen repaired if i ever have to send it back to apple?
    5G white 30 Gig

simply said the screen to replace would be to costly. you can instead use a scratch cleaner like brasso or ice kreme.these work relatively well and are a minor fix. The scratches can be easily created by any form of rubbing or scuffing done by the owner i.e. like storing it in the provided case that came with the ipod. It would have been ideall if you had not removed the clear film on the front of the ipod at all. And kept it on until you replaced it with either the invisible shield or a like clear film on PDA screens. Or have gotten a good case for your ipod immediattely.
Thats what i did i never removed the clear film that came with the ipod unitl i got a case which is this one.
    http://www.podsplus.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=157
and i also got some clear film from the same website here
    http://www.podsplus.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=160
all said i spent some money to protect my like my last 4 ipods. And i would strongy encourage anyone to do the same. I still ahve no scratches either . =D

  • Ipod Video and External Battery Question

If I am not in the correct forum, tell me. I got the 30 Gig Ipod Video. I am curious about an external battery pack that uses AA batteries to extend the battery life of the Ipod Video. I saw the Belkin but many said they had an overheating problem when using that one. I assume it must be designed for 5th gen. I had one for my mini and it worked great. My assumption is that the one that worked on the mini will not work on the Ipod Video. Any suggestions for one that works well???
Ipod Video 30 gig   Windows XP

I keep all my videos on an external hardrive (to save space on my computer's hardrive) and now that I want to transfer my videos to the video iPod, I don't know how to do it without copying the videos to the computer's. Same goes for buying videos on iTunes. Can someone help me with this, please?
One possibility is to simply let iTunes use the external drive as its primary storage device. (I.e., store your "Music" folder externally on the external HD.) To do this, go to the "Advanced" Preference tab and reset the storage location. (Not sure if current material will automatically be copied to the new location or if you have to do this manually.) Would assume you can then use the expanded storage area for iPod compatible files, archive "master" material to CD/DVD, and delete unwanted masters from the HD. If you are using the auto-sync mode, you can then use the active "Library" to control what is sync'd. Further, you can then delete material from the "library" but elect to leave the file(s) stored in the "Music" folder rather than "trashing" them (i.e., keep them stored on the external drive as sort of an "archive") if/when you no longer want it sync'd to your iPod and restore it later to iTunes when/if needed again.

  • Questions about ipod video

hi, im going to buy an ipod video, but i just need to be sure its good...i just have a question to every1 that had 1, is it good/worth buying?
and for how long can you watch movies on it till the batterie ends?

If you want a system that can hold all your CD's, listen to audiobooks on, download podcasts of the latest news, carry your family pictures and display them with music on a TV, and have the ability to watch your DVD's or downloaded movies on, then the video Ipod is right for you.
If you want a mp3 player that will NOT get scratched up if you stick it in your pocket, want a mp3 player that you can do extreme exercising with, or want to be able to load DVD's on it without taking the time to experiment and tweak the programs necessary to do it, the the video ipod is NOT for you.

Is your question on the level? Cracked screens have been often deemed abuse and outside the replacement policy. You'll never know until you make a service request and send it in.

  • Trouble with a new iPod video (and a question)

My new iPod video is causing my computer to freeze when I connect it. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes. After that, it seemed to be going OK, but it only downloaded about 500m (of a total of 50g) before iTunes froze again and stopped downloading (of course the "Do Not Disconnect" icon on the iPod stayed there, but I had no choice but to disconnect it!).
All of my music is on an external Seagate hard drive coming in through one of my USB inputs. The iPod is on the other USB input. Could this be part of the problem? I don't think it's a drive letter issue since it did start downloading the last time before freezing.
Also, I'm wondering if I can use my old firewire cable from my previous iPod to speed up the transfer process once I actually get the thing working.
Any help would be much appreciated!

  • IPod video question...

Hi people. I am looking forward in buying a 30GB MP3 player after a week and my tight choices came down on a Zune and an iPod video. I did a lot of research on both, including going to Apple's Tech Specs of the iPod video. It said there, that you must have a 2.0 version of your USB in order to connect the iPod to your PC. Will it work on a USB 1.1? I am afraid that it might not work or something might happen to the firmware of the iPod if I'll connect it to my PC. BTW, I had this PC 5 years ago, and I'm afraid that it's USB might be a version 1.1 and it might mess up the iPod. I've seen this issue on a Zune Board and saw that a Zune supports USB 1.1.
Second, I want your honest opinion. What is much better? iPod video or Zune? Thanks to those who will share thoughts with this one.

USB 1.1 won't hurt anything. People seem to get it to
work, sort of. It will just be slooow. I suspect it
will slow with a Zune, too.
I don't really expect you'll get an unbiased opinion
here regarding the relative merits of Zunes and
iPods. They both have pluses and minuses. For
example, you can't change the screen background on an
iPod but you can't use a Zune as an external hard
drive (at least not with out third party hacks). And
if you want to use a subscription music service, an
iPod is not going to be for you (unless, like me, you
by a second mp3 player, in my case a Sansa 260, for
that purpose). In the end, it's not a life or death
decision. Both will play music. I really like my
iPods, back to the first generation. I will admit to
a certain anti-Bill outlook, as well.
Hey, Meg_St.Clair, thanks for the information. You totally convinced me to buy an iPod instead of a Zune. Well, the Zune might have FM and Zune-to-Zune sharing, but I was totally turned down by the fact that it cannot be an external hard drive.
Thanks for informing me, anyway. I'd still choose function over functionality.
    Thanks a lot.

  • Planning to get the ipod video but before I do 1 question?

Is there a way to put your own movies on the ipod video or can you only have the music videos that come off itunes?

Try Nero 6. Nero Recode DVD and Videos to Nero Digital. Make sure you change the Nero Digital Profile to PORTABLE. You can set the audio to 112K, and set video to automatic. After saving in your folder, just click and drag to your iPod. Voila!

  • Question about buying an ipod video.

Does anyone know if the new ipod videos with the new features are available in stores such as Wal-Mart yet?

Wouldn't buy anything at Walmart. The iPod at an Apple store or from the online store at Apple. Its well worth it and there converage is untouchable.
