IPod w/frowny face

I have a 20 gig 4th gen click wheel iPod w/o color display that just started to go on the fritz. I was listening to music when it started to get jerky, then it finally stopped responding all together. An icon w/a folder and exlamation point showed up firsrt, then the second time I tried to boot it up a picture of an iPod w/a frowny face and x's for eyes. I downloaded the iPod updater and managed to restore it once, but in the process of reloading all my songs it froze up and went back to square one. Now I want to try to udate the iPod then restore it again, but the problem is my computer won't even recognize the iPod when I plug it in. Suggestions?

Ipod displaying frowny face& apple support website

So my i-pod has been acting funky lately, freezing at random times, not charging, etc. It seems to be fine for a while, but now it just stopped playing and shows the frowning ipod face and exclamation mark. My 5th gen ipod touch dropped face down (with case) and now it will not turn on and is not recognized by my PC. Can anyone help me? I had alot of videos and pictures on it and don't want to loose them.

Last week my 5th generation ipod touch dropped face down onto the ground. When picked up the screen was black and did not turn back on. I tried to connect it to the laptop but it did not recognize the ipod. Also when it is plugged into the laptop the area by the camera gets warm like it is charging. But still has a black screen. I've tried to reset and count to 10, but nothing happends. Is there anything that can be done to fix this? Or is it completely dead? Somebody, anybody please help.

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

You don't say which iPod you have (I assume a Nano, but I don't know which generation), but here is a link to the iPod manuals. If you have the 6th generation (like me), and you look in chapter 9 on page 44, you will find that there are 18 clock faces already in the Nano. If 18 aren't enough, I'm not sure what to tell you.

IPod to iPhone Face Time - thank you for your help : )

I have tried to use face time with someone who has an iPhone - both on IOS 5. We both have wi-fi and ended up having to switch to Skype instead. Can someone please help? Should we both be using e-mails to connect? I use her phone number to send text messages and they go through.

Ipod with sad face and will not stay in disk mode but hdd works

Hi,
I've got a problem with my ipod and i've tried everything to fix it and nothing works.
So basically after my ipod gave me the sad face I tried putting it into disk mode and that worked successfully! However after I plugged it to my computer, it would (after a few moments and windows detects something being plugged in) it resets itself and gives me the sad face again and following that a sign comes up saying Please Wait Very Low Battery.
I know its not a low battery problem since during disk mode the battery is full.
Other strange things is that in Diagnostics mode the HDSpecs section just shows just a bunch on meaningless characters and numbers for each of the specs listed. I thought that this may have just meant I had a broken harddrive so i got one of those ipod harddrive to IDE converters and plugged by ipod harddrive in (yes i now have opened the ipod). Strangely enough the ipod hard drive appears on my computer and works beautifully and i can read and write to the drive.
I went though the forums and found someone with the exact same problem and was solved:

However the person never said how they solved it except that they followed the guide posted by Mitch 751 which I also tried to no success.
Does anyone have any ideas what else I can try?

Whenever I charge it [i use the charger on the "iHome" dock] it first shows the apple logo, then after a few seconds it shows the little ipod with a sad face, and it says "apple.com/support/ipod" then after displaying that for a few seconds, a little picture of a battery and an exclamation point next to it flashes really fast, then it repeats the whole thing over again. I have never used it before that is why i am worried!! has this happened to anyone else?? I know that it isnt the iHome charger because my sister has used it on her mini ipod and it worked perfectly!

Several things could keep iPod from appearing in iTunes or in the Desktop/Finder when you connect it to your PC/Mac. The most likely causes are listed below in logical order. Check each one starting from the top of the list to see if that is what's keeping iPod from appearing.
3. Try to wait 30 minutes while iPod is charging.
4. Try another known-good FireWire or USB through Dock Connector cable.
5. Try another known-good FireWire or USB port on your computer .
6. Try to disconnect all devices from your computer's FireWire and USB ports.
7. Try to connect on a different computer i.e. a PC formatted iPod connect with a Mac computer or Mac formatted iPod with a Window base PC.
8. Try to do a Erase (Disk Utility) on a Mac computer or a reformat with a PC (Disk Management tool) but ensure you choose the right Drive (your iPod not your Hard Disk of your computer).
9. Try to run the iPod in “Diagnostic mode” . which can be accessed by pushing the “hold” switch into the “on” position and then “off” (into the original position). Then press the following buttons in the following order: “menu” plus “select” (centre button) then press “reverse” plus “select”. This will take you to the hidden diagnostic mode screen menu. It may take a few trials and pressing the buttons in the right way for this to work, so be patient and keep trying if you have to. The diagnostic mode will give you 7 choices which are: Memory, IO, Power, Status, SysCfg, Diskmode, and Reset. Don’t bother trying “reset” because in my case it didn’t work it just took me back to the same problem. Instead, choose “diskmode”, after which you should get an odd looking “ok to disconnect” sign on the iPod screen.
If one of the above step helps to get your iPod to be recognized with your computer, do a Restore.
But, if none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired. You can arrange for service at the iPod Service Website.
I strongly suggest that you should find a Mac computer and do a Restore there, your iPod is likely to get recongized in this way.

IPod Mini - sad face! "Loaner" iPod?

OK...so I got the sad face, and tried everything the website suggests. I took it to the Apple store and it appears that I'll have to send it in. What I'm wondering is if I borrow an iPod from a friend and load my music, can he then turn around and re-load his library from his computer? Does that make sense?
I REALLY cannot live without my iPod!!!

IPod 5g, sad face BUT boots into disk mode

Hey everybody, I have a iPod that my uncle brought me, he says it's his sons, but he doesn't need it. This ipod boots with apple logo, hdd making clicky sound, and then a sad face appears for about 4 seconds and shuts down. If I try holding center and play buttons, it does boot into disk mode, but before that it says that I have to connect it to the computer to restore it, but itunes doesn't recognize it. But computer does. is there any way to fix it?

The Sad face icon is usually a very good indication of a hardware malfunction or failure usually with the iPod's Hard Drive, which would also explain the loud clicking noise you are hearing.

Ipod has sad face & other things HELP!

my ipod won't do anything! it froze and then a sad face ipod popped up! i tried restoring it but the updater keeps saying, "can't mount iPod" and my iPod, meanwhile, has the apple logo on the screen constantly and then it flashes and the sad face pops up, and then a battery comes up even tho it says the battery is full! i have no idea what 2 do! HELP

Hey.. well the same sad face thingy happenned 2 me b4 and the weird thing was it went away! after a day! but nyway my advice.. go to ipod + itunes on the top tab and look at troubleshooting to find out to fix the problem. One place is: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod101/help/3/
The second thing about the battery and an exlmaation point, it means its not charged* and if you can't plug it in2 the computer theres not much u can do. Well, i recon theres somethin wrong, but im tellin ya, go to the toubleshooting and try that and hopefully it will work. Happy Holidays

I have this exact same issue! it started a couple of days ago. Right now i just have it charging to see if that helps, but it has been about 45 minutes with no change. I definitely do not want to take mine apart though...
I've only had it for about 15 days.
