IPod wants more storage than needed

I have a iPod Nano 16GB 4th generation. My problem is that both iTunes and explorer says it has around 1GB free. But as soon as I try to transfer movies I get an error that says "needs more storage", I am using iTunes i swedish so I don't know the exact phrase.
For example: If I sync as many movies possible, and I then have 865,9MB free in my iPod. When I try to transfer a movie which in this case is 98,7MB, I get the error and it says: Cannot sync (918,3MB needed)
It's like the iPod needs some spare storage or something... so weird...

  • Time Machine requests more storage than needed!

    Starting standard backup

Copied 2539 files (265.1 MB) from volume Snow_Leopard.
Copied 2547 files (265.1 MB) from volume Leopard.
Copied 2754 files (548.8 MB) from volume Data.
No pre-backup thinning needed: 1.29 GB requested (including padding), 108.86 GB available
Copied 382 files (103 bytes) from volume Snow_Leopard.
Copied 390 files (196 bytes) from volume Leopard.
Copied 435 files (196 bytes) from volume Data.
    Starting post-backup thinning
No post-back up thinning needed: no expired backups exist
    Backup completed successfully.
As you can see from the log entries above, Time Machine requested 1.94 GB, but it backed up only 548.8 MB.
And then it requested 1.29 GB and it backed up only 196 bytes.
I recall reading in this forum that this may be caused by the size information in some folder being wrong. I have partitioned my internal hard drive in three partitions:
    1. Leopard
    2. Snow Leopard
    3. Data
So, I excluded the Leopard partition and did another backup and it was still more than 1 GB.
I added Leopard and took a backup.
Then I excluded Snow Leopard and did another backup and the space requested was still more than 1 GB.
So I added Snow Leopard and took a backup.
Then I excluded Data and did another backup. It requested more than 1 GB.
So, I was unable to identify which volume had the bad folder info.
I wiped out the Time Machine backup by reformatting the volume,
I then re-created the directory of all three volumes using Disk Warrior.
And then I ran a fresh backup.
And then I ran another backup. It still requests more than 1 GB than needed.
    Any else I should try?
    Thank you very much.

That's more of an over-estimate than usual. TM adds 20% to the estimated size of the backup, and it's usually fairly close.
no it's not. I frequently see large disparity between estimated and actual backup for smaller backups. in the example I posted the ratio is 5:1! this is completely normal. there is nothing to troubleshoot or see here.
There are some things that will cause the estimate to be off significantly, but most of them result in larger backups, not smaller ones.
It's pure speculation, but I suspect if the same file is updated repeatedly between backups, it's size may be counted more than once for the estimate.
But as you mentioned, something corrupted might be a cause, also. Since there's no way to tell how much was estimated from each partition, I'd run +*Verify Disk+* on the partition you're running from, and +*Repair Disk+* on the others, then do a Restart.

It could be that the existing wire in your appartment is not clean enough to provision DSL only. When combined with the phone possibly it has a higher line voltage and worked before. Now that the line is to be provisioned without phone service it may be giving them trouble that did not show before they came out and ran the new line test. So a new jack dedecated for your DSL line may require a new wire be run to your appartment. Also the account for internet only used to require direct billing to a credit card or something else. This was a number of years ago. Most accounts are linked to a phone number, and without a voice number it adds to the confusion.
If you are getting the voice and everything turned on as before, then I am at a loss for words.

  • IPod touch 4 gives message "Cannot Download" "there is not enough available storage to download...You can manage your storage in settings." when trying to update or install one but not all apps. I have more storage than the app takes. Can u help?

iPod touch 4 gives message "Cannot Download" "there is not enough available storage to download...You can manage your storage in settings." when trying to update or install one of the apps, but not other apps.  I have more space available than needed for the app.  What do I need to do to fix this problem?  Do I need to completely reset this device as new and, if so, how should I do that?

You need to delete some item (apps, music, photos etc) from the iPod,.However, sometime files get corrupt. To determine that connect the iPod to your computer and click on the iPod under Devices in iTunes. How much storage is used by the "other" category. If over 1 1/2 GB that indicates corrupted files.
To get the "other" down to normal value you need to restore your iPod usually restoring from backup works but sometimes restoring to factory settings.new iPod is required./

I want to replace my laptop hard drive for more storage.  how do I know which one to get?

Any 9.5mm high 2 1/2" form factor SATA hard drive will work.

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application SuperDuper. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html  You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

  • Using ipod as a storage device, need some help

I want to use my ipod nano as a storage device and transfer my "mac" music files onto "windows" computer. Can i do that?

Not without the aid of some 3rd party software such as XPlay2.
Windows cannot read a Mac formatted drive.
Probably the easiest way to use an iPod on both Mac and Windows computers is to format the iPod (using iPod Updater) using the PC. This will force your iPod to use the Windows file system (FAT32) which both the Mac and PC can read from and write to without the help of additional software. Of course then all your software updates for the iPod will have to be done on Windows.
If you do that, you can use the iPod as a storage drive.

  • My ipod is more problematic than a bad boyfriend! I need help

I've had so many problems with Itunes and Ipod, recent ones being these: I can't update to 1.2 firmware (And I've tried a lot!!) AND my purchased content hasn't been playing on my ipod for about 3 months now. I've tried ejecting and plugging back in, shutting ipodservice on and off, reinstalling itunes, resetting ipod, trying different usb ports, and restarting my computer. I have yet to restore as I don't want the hassle of having to delete everything off my ipod only to put it back on to fix some problem I didn't cause. Plus, it hasn't done much from what I've seen around here. If anyone's got any suggestions I'd be glad to hear them.

No. You'll need to do this from the computer you originally set the iPod up with, but only as long as the songs that you are wanting to convert are still in your iTunes library.
Otherwise, your only option is to copy your music to an iTunes library first and then sync them back over with the Convert Higher bit rate songs option.

  • Ipod has more space than computer!!!!

Hello, I've run into a bit of a problem. I've recently bought a 30 G ipod w/ video, but my computer only has 20 G. Obviously less now, as I've had it for a few years... so lets say 3 G. Is there any way I can keep all my music on my ipod w/o [sync-ing it and keeping all the music on my hard drive]?
    Thank you much =]
    ~ musezilla

You simply have to change the update option of your iPod to "manually manage music and videos". You can get details here: Managing content manually on iPod
One major word of caution. If you delete songs from your PC and have no back up other than the iPod you will risk losing them permanently if your iPod fails or you find you have to restore it to solve a problem. You should consider investing in an additional internal or external hard drive to store/back up your music. Alternatively at the very least back up songs you can't replace such as iTunes downloads to CD or DVD. Forum member Buegie has compiled a very extensive procedure for backing up your music which you'll find at this link: Backing up iTunes
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on your desktop or check this link: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • The height (thickness) of the toolbars is too much taking up more room than needed for the text they contain.

The empty space in the toolbar uses up space on the monitor that could hold more information from the web site I am looking at. How can I reduce the depth of these toolbars?

You can check and select which toolbar to see:
    *Firefox > Options
*"View > Toolbars" (press F10 to display a hidden menu bar)
Open the Customize window to possibly move some items from one toolbar to another.
*Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout

  • What to do if iPod has more capacity than computer's HDD?

I just got myself the 160GB iPod Classic, only to realize some weeks later that how can I fill it up if my MacBook has only 120GB of HDD?
Is there a way to fill it up without having to sync back to iTunes? I would mostly use it for videos, either from ITS or from my DVD collection.
    Thanks in advanced.

You could always buy a large external drive (say 500GB) and keep your iTunes library there and then your drive will definitely be large enough to hold everything your iPod does.

  • Any option to purchase more storage than 5GB?

Is there any option to purchase additional web space for more
documents? If not,. do you plan to implement this in the future,
because I would definitely use this service if you offered say 20GB
    or even 10GB.

    Hello,
Although it's not currently an option, the answer is YES, we
do plan to introduce paid accounts with additional space. Thank you
for your patience while we work on rolling this out.

  • Songs on iTunes take up more space than needed.

I have all my songs on iTunes, but my 205 songs take up 4.20 GB.  This doesn't seem right.  I looked up about how many songs should be in a GB and it said it should be about 150 songs.  Why does mine take up this much space?

205 songs taking 4.20GB does not make sense to me.
I have 2067 songs and it takes 12.95GB.
If you show columns Time, Bite Rate, Size and Kind you should see how much space each song takes.
