IPod wants to overwrite iMac

I'm using an iMac G4 running OS 10.2.8.
I attempted to update my contacts list on my iPod using iSync and got a prompt window stating that 3 items on my computer would be changed and 6 items modified. This confuses me since I'm unaware of a way to enter data into the iPod other than with iSync or iTunes. I was expecting my computer, iMac, to simply overwrite and update the iPod.
I'm accustomed to managing a Palm which can enter and change data, but there is no way to change data in the iPod.
Any advice?

1) To move my music over from the laptop to the imac can I do this through my router by getting the IP addy of the PC? (will it import all of my ratings and album art as well?)
You can transfer your music using your local network. To do so, I would recommend you to read [this article|http://www.apple.com/getamac/movetomac/network.html] from Apple. However you can't simply move library from a PC to Mac and keep all your metadata stored. [This article|http://lifehacker.com/software/itunes/geek-to-live--how-to-move-an-itun es-library-from-a-pc-to-mac-and-back-242468.php] is also an excellent guide, which will help you doing that.

2) Will i have to restore my ipod in order for it to work on the mac?
No, just connect your iPod to your iMac and it's done!

3) (ok i lied three questions) I purchased the Apps for my touch. i really do not want to lose them as they cost me $20. If i do have to restore will the apps still be there?
Yes, it will. However you'll need to move the "+iPod touch App Pack 4A93.ipa+" file located on a Windows here...
*Windows XP*
C:\Documents and Settings[user name]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\Mobile Applications\
*Windows Vista*
C:\Users[user name]\AppData\Roaming
Apple Computer\iTunes\Mobile Applications\
Note: These locations are hidden by default in Windows.
... and paste it on your Mac here:
Mac OS X:
~/Library/iTunes/Mobile Applications
Then you'll only need to authorize your iMac with your iTunes Store account and it's done. Every time you restore your iPod, probably on the second synchronization, the Upgrade will be re-installed on the iPod Touch.
Hope this helps!

  • How can I import photo's from an older iPod to my new iMac ? I can do "import" in iPhoto, but the system does not "see" my iPod, even if it is connected to the iMac

I bought a new iMac. All photo's from the old iMac are on my iPod. The old iMac had a problem, due to which I could not transfer photo's. So I am trying to import the photo's from my iPod to my new iMac. But this does not work. The new iMac suggests to replace the content of the iPod with the content of the iMac, but I want to do just the reverse. When the iPod is connected to the iMac, the iMac seems to ignore the iPod. Probably because the iPod was first used on the old iMac ?

Photos on the iPod are not stored in standard formats, but in formats that are optimised for the space annd screen size of the device. So, unless you have specifically chosen to save full size images on the iPod - and have set up disk access for the job - then it's not going to work.
There are apps that will recover photos from iPods. Have a search on MacUpdate
But the best solution is to get the pics from your old Mac somehow.

  • I just purchased a new iMac. My iTunes account is missing a ton of music and I cant figure out how to access it. When I try to load music from my ipod to match my imac it only asks if i'd like to sink my ipod with my account. How do I access my library?

I just purchased a new iMac. My iTunes account is missing a ton of music and only contains "purchased" music. When I try to load music from my ipod to match my imac it only asks if i'd like to sinc my ipod with my account. How do I access my entire library? Thanks

Unless you subscribe to Match, you will have to transfer your non-iTunes stuff from your old computer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
If you want to copy non-iTunes music off of your iPod (eg, if your old computer doesn't exist), you'll need to use a third party program.  I don't know of any free ones anymore, but if you google, you can find several in the $19 range.

  • Generation 4 iPod Connection to new iMac intel core 2 duo

Okay, first of all heres all my technical information:
-new iMac Intel Core 2 Duo
-Gen 4 iPod, non color diplay
    -running iTunes 7.0.2
-sadly, no iPod power brick(although i think i need it to solve the problem)
Okay, now to the problem, I tried to connect the iPod to my new iMac, and it worked after leaving it alone for 15 minutes. It is formated to windows and i wanted the music to stay on it, so i disconnected it. Afterward i just thought, screw it, and connected it hoping to restore it, but it never showed up in iTunes or the finder. I thought this was odd, then i looked at the iPod and it displayed a image of a iPod power brick going into an outlet. i havent been able to get to the apple store and thought there must be an easier way to do this, so i went to get the old install disc for my iPod that came with it. Hoping this would finally work, i tried to run the package installer for the iPod to install the drivers, and it displayed(after it evaluated my comp) "Cannot be installed on this computer, missing Mac OSX Networking Update" I've looked all over the Downloads area of the Apple site and havent been able to find it. Can someone please help me!?!

I have the new 24" flat screen imac and a new IPOD video. I was using the ipod on an old mac with 10.4 and it was working ok with a few sync issues. But when I tried it with the new mac I get very bad results. Itunes hangs and I need to do a hard power reset. Then the ipod once hung up and I had to do a restore on my old mac. Still have not successfully used the ipod with the new mac.
    my system is the following
    Machine Name: iMac
    Machine Model: iMac6,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1

Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.

  • How can I burn more than 1 movie to a DVD when there is room on the disc for it. Premiere wants to overwrite once 1 movie is burned to the disc

How can I burn more than 1 movie onto a DVD? Once 1 movie is burned successfully to the disc, I try to burn another movie and Premiere wants to overwrite the first movie. One movie is 1.2 GB, second is 2.3; so there is room on a 4.7 GB DVD-RW.

What you report is what it is.
Each burn to of Timeline content to DVD-VIDEO format on DVD disc results in the disc containing one OpenDVD Folder and one VIDEO_TS Folder.
Only one VIDEO_TS Folder can be put on a DVD-VIDEO disc even when Premiere Elements is not involved. I have seen that written about online, and I have
never found a way to overcome what seems to be basic behavior description of DVD-VIDEO..
Premiere Elements will allow you to write to a disc with content already on it, but only after you give the OK for erasing the disc content before going ahead
    with the burn to.
If you have several movies, one possibility is to build a Timeline with the movies, use stop markers, and setup disc menus according so that the viewer
can selectively watch the movies. More on that later if wanted.
Any questions or need clarification, please ask.
    Thank you.

  • "Itunes can not connect to this Ipod. An unknown error occurred." I get this message when I plug my Ipod touch into my Imac. I have restored the Ipod and have the latest Itunes. I have tried different cables and a macbook.

I have an Ipod touch 8GB, an Imac and an apple laptop. I have had this Ipod for years and it has been synced at different times to my Imac and laptop. Recently the battery ran way down on my Ipod. I plugged it into my Imac. After it charge I had to restore it. After I restored it Itunes couldn't connect to it because, "An unknown error occurred". I tried to connect it to Itunes on my laptop and got the same error message. I have tried different USB cables. Since Itunes won't connect, I can't do another restore. I don't know what do try from here.
Some additional info that might be related to this. Just before this Ipod problem came up I crashed my hard disk on the Imac. I had to erase it and reload all my stuff (I was able to copy the contents to a hard drive connected to my laptop using the firewire - I couldn't use time machine because of the crashed HD.) My Imac has been restored to the latest Itunes - I am running OSX 10.6.8.

    Thanks for the help Ricky.
I did put my iPod into DFU and iTunes recognized it in restore mode. After restore I am back where I was before - iTunes cannot connect because of an unknown error.
I have installed Jailbreak to see if I can bypass itunes but haven't succeeded. I can't get my computer to recopgnize the iPod as a device.
I'll take it to a Genius bar next time I am in the area of one. Until then I'll probably continue to try hacks to get it connected.

  • The latest iTunes wiped out my apps for my 2G iPod Touch by overwriting updates which are no longer compatible with iOS 4.2.  I tried to restore to an earlier version with no success.  Is there any way to download the older versions of apps which are comp

The latest iTunes software wiped out my apps for my 2G iPod Touch by overwriting newer releases of the apps which are not compatible with iOS 4.2.1.  I tried to restore the iPod to an earlier version without success.  Is there any way to download older versions of my apps which are compatible with my older iPod?

Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.

    Hi Kanishk,
Those apps are forever tied to the Apple ID they were purchased under. You can either delete them and re-purchase them, or you can go to Manage your Apple ID and reset the password on the old Apple ID so you can use it to update your apps: Apple - My Apple ID
If you decide to continue to use them under the old ID password, I would suggest that when you reset that password, you change it to be the same password as the one you are currently using. That way when apps need to be updated you will only need to know one password and you won't have to be concerned with which Apple ID is displaying.

  • How do I transfer the music from my iPod to my new IMac computer (95% of the music on it is from CD's I own)?

How do I transfer the music from my IPod to my new IMac computer?  I just changed from a PC to IMac. 95% of the music on it is from CD's I own and the ITunes on the new IMac is only recongnizing the ones I bought off of ITunes.

That is correct.  The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases.
Copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.

  • Want to use iMac G5 LCD as PC monitor

    Hello, here is my problem:
I have iMac G5 that I can't use it (logic board problems, can't finish OS installation) but LCD works just fine! Inverter works fine too.
I want to use iMac LCD instead of my regular (still CRT) monitor.
My question is: is it possible to cut off THIS side of LVDS cable (cable that connects logic board and LCD) and instead that little 30-pin connector put DVI connector so I can connect VGA/DVI output from my PC to that (new) DVI connector that goes into LCD? I hope you understand what I want to do!
If someone has other idea how to use iMac G5 20inch LCD like PC monitor, please post it.

I also would like to try and do the same thing.
I have a g5 imac ALS... just had the motherboard recapped and power supply replaced. It works but freezes up intermittently and the fans are just insane...throttling up to max every 30 seconds for a couple minutes fo no reason (temp is ok), the last time I turned it on I realized that it has become pretty much unusable as a reliable family server. We keep the computer on our kitchen counter and the smaller G5 fits well and matches a whole lot better since it's white.
I don't mind cutting or soldering...is it possible to tap into the main cable? It would make a sweet pairing with a new mac mini.
