IPod Whoops

So I just got this iPod about 8 hours ago and I consider myself pretty good with PC's. I made the mistake of not reading the directions, I assumed it was plug 'n play and I had a plugin for winamp in order to upload my songs into the 20gig color device. Well I was seeing how to use it as a hard disk and i went to "My Computer" and the iPod wasn't in disk mode. I clicked on it and it said it would need to format. I assumed that was standard so I clicked yes. Anyways...the format said it had failed after it had gone all the way through. From then on the iPod's backlighting was off and the only thing that came up on the screen was the famous folder with an exclamation point. I've restarted the iPod many times with no success and now it won't go into disk mode, or at least it doesnt show up in the top taskbar. When I plug it into the computer using USB 2.0 it just says "Do Not Connect" over and over but it still charges.
In addition, I've tried to iPod software that came with it to restore it and format it again. The formatting in that program always says it fails at "Line 1086". So any ideas?

Problem solved. I disabled the USB 2.0 and it was able to restore the iPod. That's a pretty big issue for apple to have.

  • My video not playing on iphone but playing on ipod

    Hi,
Is there any reason why a mp4 converted video can't be played on iphone ?
It is playing fine on ipod.

Whoops! I must have cut off the link when I cut and pasted:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1531
Safari 5 is supposed to support HTML5 video. I did find this stuff though, which might be related:
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20101119054008513

Main things linked above say that you may have to tweak the link code for Safari 5 to use a full (not relative) URL. Not sure if this affects Safari 6. You may also have to make sure it's encoded as h.264

  • 3rd generation iPod Touch and Video Out - "whoops!!!"

Before I jump to any conclusions about Apple, here is my experience with the Video out operation of my brand new 3rd generation 64 GB iPod Touch. This is my third iPod and about a year ago I decided (at great personal expense) to purchase the Apple Composite AV Cable (despite the fact that you can buy copies of the cable on eBay for 1/10th the price). When I plugged this cable into my new iPod touch, the Video Out option was greyed out. I tried lots of different things but eventually gave up and went to the Apple Store to see what it said about compatability. Sure enough, the 3rd Generation Touch is the ONLY iPod, iPhone etc not mentioned. I call my friendly apple support person who says "*of course it will work, I am 100% sure*". I then jokingly asked if he would give me $1000 if he was wrong and begrudgingly he put me on hold "just to check". 15 minutes later (unusual for Apple) he came back to me saying that *I "might" be right but he was 100% sure that if I connected my cable via a Universal Dock it would work.*
Now, before I go out and spend any more money on a Universal Dock, has anybody tried this? Why would apple make the change ONLY to the 3rd Gen iPod touch?
I have noticed that there is one nasty non-apple cable on the market that claims it will work BUT it doesn't have the ability to charge...... besides I ONLY buy legit Apple products.
    Any comments?

Wow Apple pulled tha last post almost as quick as it was written.
I have been in the IT industry for 18 years, when I started out I read the Mac bible and got a job supporting 1000 macs (remember the wonderful days of the symbol of the little bomb and all you could do is re-install the OS - what a joke). We ditched the Mac due to limited application support (nothing has changed much has it). I did not look at another apple product for 15 years, got a Touch for free ( CC points) Firmware 2.2, loved the little bugger, had a whole new respect for Apple. Happily got 2 cables from eBay for $5.00 for both, video to the tv, charging, audio, best of all worlds. Then, I upgrade to version 3.01 for $5.00, what a deal, copy paste, etc. till I plug in my cables and nothing works anymore. Take it to the car for my FM receiver,. only mono now. Oh sorry you now have to dish out $50.00 for our cables (the /B version not the /A cause we even screwed our customers that bought our own cables) and oh ya you can only buy over priced FM receiver products that pay bloated license fees to Apple. Then we come to your story, you buy "Only Apple products" which do not work (check for the /A model of the cable, you need the /B (/B= Buy again?? Maybe) and then the support guy tells your to go out and spend yet another $50.00 on a universal dock and you are asking if you should do it. Sure spend another $50.00 for the chip enabled dock, it will work, hmm, I think I have put together a pc for less than $100.00

  • Ipod won't show up on desktop or in itunes, but disk utility recognizes it

Here's one i've been trying to figure out for a while. i have an old 3g (at least, i think that's what it is...black and white display and clickwheel) ipod that I've only been using as an external hard drive for the last year or two. So, there's only one album on it and the rest of the info is back ups of documents. For whatever reason, when i plug in the ipod using firewire, i get the "do not disconnect" screen on the ipod, and itunes opens. But, the ipod does not show up in itunes or on my desktop (as it should, in disk mode). If i disconnect the ipod, i get the "you disconnected a device without removing it" pop up. One more thing, in Disk Utility, it recognizes my ipod as being there....same if i go into my "about this mac" screen and look under the firewire port. Any suggestions? I don't want to lose the information, if at all possible.

I have the same problem -- my iPod (first-gen nano) says "use iTunes to restore" in several languages, and doesn't do anything. I can see it in disk utililty and in the system profiler USB list. Fine, I think, I'll just load all my music back on after I restore.
Whoops! Apple forgot that if your iPod doesn't show up in iTunes, you can't restore it any more! Even the kbase is out of date, because it tells you (as the final step) to use iTunes to restore the thing on the page about iTunes not recognizing it.
If I reformat in Disk Utility, will my iPod be permanently damaged? Because that's looking like the last thing I'll be able to do, now that Apple has dropped standalone updaters...

  • IPod Touch read as a webcam by my computer?

I've taken my iPod to work this week and have been charging it on my computer there. This morning I've downloaded some music and when I plugged in the iPod to sync, it comes up as "new hardware found - webcam," followed by "there's a problem installing your webcam." Did plugging it in at work (Windows 7) mess up some settings? The computer there read it as an Apple device.

Whoops--never mind. A miracle occurred. It works now.

  • I am very disappointed with the new ipod touch

So apple adds all of this new stuff to the iphone 4s, dual core a5 chip, all new 8MP camera and optics, and siri. Yay, every iphone customer is happy. This is what you added to the new ipod touch, wait its not new, its the 4th generation with the option of having it in white. Whoop-de-do, you added white to it, besides that you didn't add anything new to it. You have pretty much ditched the ipod touch in my opinion. You have greatly disappointed me apple...

What I would really like to see in the next gen Touch is 3G or 4G wireless.
Refillable usage, just like the iPad.  Don't want the "contract" requirements
of iPhone.  Even if you do by an unlocked iPhone, you can only get
2 year contract service for data, oh yeah and have to get voice as well.
I just want wireless data access in my pocket, and the Touch with 3G/4G
    would fit that bill nicely!

    Hi
My Ipod is down! I've tried to go on the apple website to help me fix the problem but I think im not getting any progress.
when i open my ipod, all i see is the little ipod with x's in its eyes ..."sad ipod" and..
Whenever i connect the ipod to compt with the USB all i see is the battery sign with the thunder...ive tried waiting but no luck...

When i go to itunes it would say no ipod connected but yet the ipod is on with the batery and thunder.. I know it has battery but why is it not working
I tried it on another compt and still not working

    Please help
    thanks
    much love !!
    edit....
whoops i realized its in the wrong topic
SORRY and i dont know how to move it SORRY
      Windows XP

So wouldyou recommend that I update? It was made for use with an att sim but was unlocked for use with a tmobile sim... I just so happen to have att. So the phone being locked for att wouldn't be a bother for me. I've just heard of people getting sim card read errors after updating, so I was wondering if I should even bother.

  • Unable to sync TV Shows to ipod video.  New hard drive

I had a bad hard drive and recovered the data. iTunes has all the music and Tv shows that I saved and the I had purchased. All music syncs to ipod but TV Shows won't.
when i try to deauthorize, the error message is:
*We could not complete your iTunes Store request. You do not have enough access priviledges for this operation.
There was an error in the iTunes store. Please try again later.*
I am logged in to the store also.

Incredibly, Mike 57's technique works. What's even more incredible is how such a huge bug - failure to sync purchased movies upoloaded from iTunes - got into a production release.
Whoops, I forgot! This is Apple, the company that can do no wrong. Mindless loyalty to Apple has let them get away with such foolishness for decades. I wonder how many Apple TV units have been returned because of this bug. Thousands?
No problem for Apple, with 100 million iPods out there and the kewlest corporate image in the biz. These days, as in the past, brand image is more important than reality.

  • Burn CD from iPod playlist?

I'm listening to some songs I ripped from my purchased CDs on my work PC - the library file these tracks were initially added from is on my home PC. Along the way, I made a playlist in iTunes and saved this playlist on my iPod for later listening. Since I listen to music in my car, I'd also like to burn the files in that playlist to a CD, however since I'm using song files stored on my iPod it's not letting me burn them to CD, even though they are DRM-free MP3 files I ripped from my own CDs.
Is there a way to work around the asinine "copy guard" BS that's part of iTunes so I can use MY music the way I want? Thanks in advance!

So... I can't burn to a CD from my iPod - I'll need to copy the files to my PC to do that.
Oh, wait... whoops, I forgot - I can't even COPY the files from my iPod to the second PC from that iPOd without a third-party application...
That sounds like a DRM issue to me, seeing as how it's in no way a TECHNICAL issue. it's an artificial limitation imposed on my file usage by the software. Grrr.
But I see what you're saying - without the files being on the PC that created the initial Library file (my home PC), I cannot burn a CD. At least I'll be able to take the Playlist I made and saved on my iPod and use it as the burn list on my home PC, correct?
Thanks for the Product Feedback link - not thatit will do me any good I assume, but at least I'll go on record as being dis-satisfied with the service. If enough people complain maybe things will change. Appreciate it!

  • IPod Classic has files, but won't play anything on iPod or in iTunes

I have a question about iPod/iTunes file structure.
I have an 80 gb iPod Classic with about 50 gigs of music and video. I'm not sure what I did, but I can't get the iPod to play, or recognize the data in iTunes. When I plug the iPod in, it registers in Windows with the disc name and all folders (showing 50 GB used space), but in iTunes, it just calls it "iPod" (not the iPod name)and it only shows the Summary page, no others with the only option being to restore the iPod. I get the message "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod 'MY STUFF'. Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings." I don't have the computer with the original music (my dad has it half the country away), so I refuse to restore. All the music and video was purchased through iTunes.
Also, when the iPod is disconnected from the computer (or connected for that matter), it shows that the iPod has 50 GB's of data, but when I select Music or TV Shows for example, nothing shows up. It almost seems empty
I'm thinking I deleted a file or two that iPod/iTunes needs to recognize all the files (the iPod Library file maybe??). I have a hidden folder called iPod_Control on the disk. Can anyone tell me what I need to do? Do I need to copy or create a file or folder? Do I need to move files around? Kind of random, I know, but I don't want to lose literally thousands of dollars in paid music and video!
    THANK YOU!!!

  • Man, H.264 encode to iPod is superslow in Compressor 2.1!

I was so happy that compressor finally encodes a iPod compatible H.264-file.
So I started to try it out.
I encoded a 3 minute DV-PAL clip from FCP into iPod compatible H.264 using the preset in compressor 2.1
the 3 minute clip took 15 minutes to encode on my Quad G5 with 4 GB RAM. (using around 170% CPU)
I then took the preset and increased the quality to best, then gave it another go.
The 3 minute clip took a whooping 5 hours to encode into a iPod compatible file on the Quad.
This app seriously need some optimization!
The encoding times reminds me of my sorenson encodes using cleaner on my brand new blue/white G3 back in the day!

It may do it realtime, but I don't think its doing multipass or frame controls or resizing properly. Looking at two clips, done from QT and Compressor, the resolution of the QT export was 320x213, audio sample rate was lower and the overall data rate was higher than what was done in Compressor. If you turn off frame controls and multipass in Compressor, the speeds are about the same.
By default, I think Compressor optimizes for the best quality. QT doesn't give you an option, but by looking at the attributes of the files the Compressor one seems better. Of course, whether the quality, resolution accuracy, and file size is worth 2x the encoding time is subjective. Setting the frame controls to best would increase encoding times exponentially.
It was an intersting observation tho. To be honest, I dont see a big difference between the two files, just the obvious resultion difference. Maybe the extra options aren't needed.

  • A BIG WHOOPS!!!! with iphoto 6

I have iphoto 6. The library was called photos. Well my husband moved a folder from the desktop labeled photos into the pictures folder and replaced the existing folder, now have no pictures in iphoto. I have almost all my pictures on my ipod. Is there a way i can get them back in iphoto from my ipod. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

    Hi p&t,
    That is a big whoops!
Did you just use the sync feature in iTunes to sync the library?
Did you also check the Option to copy the full size photos to the iPod?
if you checked the option to copy the full resolutions to the iPod, then they are in a folder called "Photos" on the iPod.
To see the Photos folder on the iPod, connect your iPod and when itunes opens, click the iPod pref icon on the bottom right. In the next window that opens, choose the General button, then enable the disk mode. This way the iPod will mount on the desktop so you can double click it to open it. When it opens, you can drag the Photos folder to your desktop.
