IPod will not turn off after being used as an external HD in Windows

I have disabled the option to have Itunes open when I connect my Ipod and I turned off the iTunesHelper in msconfig. This allows me to use my Ipod as an external HD without interference by iTunes. I have found that since upgrading to Ipod firmware 1.1.1, after I disconnect my Ipod using the Safely Remove hardware option in Windows XP SP2 my iPod will not turn off. I just turn on the lock, and let sleep mode set in after 2 minutes.
This only occurs if I connect the iPod as an external HD and does not occur when I connect the iPod with iTunes open to sync my music library. The problem started with firmware 1.1.1. Is anyone also having this issue, and if so, is there a known solution?

If you are not past the 2 weeks return period you can just return it.. for sure the TC is not ideal when you want something to store files.. the fundamental issue is lack of backup. The TC cannot back itself up. Nor can Time Machine in the computer backup network drives.
To mount the TC disk in finder.
Use Go, Connect to server. in the top menu.
Type in AFP://TCname.local or TCIPaddress. (where TCname.local is the correct network name of the TC.. ie not its name as typed in, if it includes spaces and illegal characters like apostrophe. You need to find the actual network name from network utility netstat scan or better still use proper naming on the TC.
Local is the default domain and helps.
If the TC is in router mode the IP is static and is better used than the name.
AFP://10.0.1.1 for example with default IP is far superior way to identify a network resource.
The disk password will be requested. Add it to your keychain.
It is better to load files to a DMG or sparsebundle.. See Pondini for info.

    Hello houseman06
Check out the troubleshooting steps in the article below to get your iPad nano back up and running. Also check to make sure that the lock button is not on preventing it from being un responsive.

Light will not turn off after new cyano cartridge installed

I suspect that the ones that say they will work with Windows 8 on the box.  If it does not say that, check the maunfacturer's website.  They eventually will have to give Windows 8 support for the new cards or loose out to the competitors cards.

  • IPod will not turn off using click wheel

My 30G iPod won't turn off unless I put it in the universal dock and use the remote. It will not turn off using the click wheel. I've tried resetting the iPod, and also changed the "Settings" back to the factory default, and that didn't make any difference. Is anyone else having this problem?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    Does the iPod sucessfully reset?
    Try resetting the iPod...
    Resetting iPod
After it resets, wait about a minute. Now try turning it off.
Also, try activating the sleep timer on the iPod. Does that turn it off? (Go to extras-->clock-->[select a clock]-->sleep)

  • Ipod will not turn off

my ipod will not shut off. any suggestioins?

No you are CLEARLY not alone. BUT, PLEASE do not get sidetracked with superflouous issues. It does not matter what you used to synch your iPod nor does it matter how you connected; when you bought it; or any of 5 million other distractions. The point is (believe me I've DONE the research and if you don't believe me, feel free to read ALL of the Google entires!) after you synch your nano (and also your 5th Gen Video iPod) you will NOT be able to turn it off the normal way. If you try to play a podcast at this point it will likely freeze your Nano (but that's a whole NEW thread with another giga-thousand people upset with a lack of response...) IF you mash the Menu and Center buttons you can reset the unit and likely gain control over it again. If that makes you happy - go for it. As far as I am concerned, this is NOT an answer. I want a fix. How about you?

  • My ipod will not turn off please help???

Everything works on my ipod, but it will not turn off. It will play and pause but not turn off.

I too have had this problem. In fact it seems to be a fairly common problem, suggesting that it is an unaddressed bug.
    Here's what you can try:
    1. Reset your iPod by holding down the Menu and Select buttons simultaneously for 5-10 seconds. After your iPod reboots, see if it will turn off. If not:
    2. Restore your iPod using iPod Updater, which you can download from http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/ . Restoring your iPod will delete all songs, pictures etc and reload the iPod's operating system. If that doesn't fix it, you can:
    3. Try a work-around. Can you turn it off using the Sleep menu option? If you don't see that in the main iPod menu, go to Settings/Main Menu and turn on the Sleep menu option. This didn't work for me, but others have een able to turn their Nanos off this way.
If none of these things work, your only option is to have Apple replace you iPod. You can do this by contacting Apple support, or by going to the Genius Bar at an Apple retail store.
Several people (including me) have seen the not-turning-off problem in conjunction with the Nano frequently showing a message saying that firewire connections are not supported. In my case my Nano became unusable because the firewire message would pop up so often that I couldn't navigate through the menus to get it to play anything. I took my Nano to an Apple store and the Genius Bar guy replaced it on the spot. Unfortunately the replacement also doesn't work (headphone jack doesn't work so I can't hear any music) so I will have to go back again, but don't let my run of bad luck prevent you from getting a replacement.

  • Ipod will not turn off, no longer recognized

iPod asked to update to latest software.  Upload failed and ipod left in state where it will not turn off, and is no longer recognized in itunes or as a device.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    Dry the iPod by:

    Then try the standard fixes:
    Reset:
    - Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Retore to factory defaults/new iPod
If still problem then your iPod needs service.

  • 30GB ipod will not turn off

Everything seems to be working fine, music, videos, connection to itunes, and no sudden trauma has happened to the ipod. It just will not turn off and I am wondering if there is another way besides holding the pause/play button. Should I reset all settings? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Try holding the MENU and SELECT (center) buttons until you see the Apple logo to reset your iPod - then see if it'll turn off.
    Cheers!

  • Z10 will not turn on- after being put to sleep with full battery

I turned my Z10 off last night to save the battery. It was freshly charged.  I woke up this morning and tried to turn it on.  Nothing happens, not even a light comes on.  The thing is a brick.  It won't respond to being plugged in.  I got it brand new, I've had it for six months, and I only ever use the charger that came with it.  I'm afraid it's completely toast.  Unless this gets fixed I'll never buy another Blackberry anything, but it's doubtful they'll be in business long enough to make that call.
Any SOLUTIONS are welcome.  Being without a phone is not tenable and a BUSINESS such as Blackberry who alleges to SERVE BUSINESS with their products should know this.  I am seriously disappointed.

Turned on after holding all three buttons for half a minute.  But I'm not convinced this is the end of its troubles.  Definitely getting a Samsung after this- I've never had a problem with any of THEIR electronics, and they're not going anywhere.  The big worry for me is I'll need to send my Z10 in and they'll no longer exist to fix it.
