IPod & Windows Vista

Just bought a new HP Pavillion with Vista. I installed iTunes and synched by nano. I can see all the music in the libraries but they are "greyed out" meaning I can't edit any lists. Any ideas how to fix this?

Grey text when you look at the content and a lock symbol at the bottom of the screen just indicates that the iPod is set to update automatically (sync). If you want to play the iPod songs through iTunes, delete songs from the iPod, drag songs from iTunes, add playlists to the iPod etc. you need to change the update setting to "manually manage songs and videos". The text will change from grey to black and everything will be directly accessible through iTunes:
Managing content manually on iPod
iPod 101: Fill 'er Up
Something to remember about using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on the desktop and check this link for alternative methods: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • 4th Gen Photo iPod/Windows Vista 64 bit Home/iTunes not playing nice

I have a fourth generation photo ipod. I was using it fine and it was syncing properly on my computer using XP Professional edition.
I just bought a new computer with 64 bit Windows Vista Home Premium on it. So I installed itunes and was prepared to go through the process of clearing the ipod and resyncing it with my new computer. In this process, I encounted a lot of errors. And in addition, it would error-out just in the restore process.
Eventually I got it to restore on the Vista computer. And now the problem I am having is that about ten songs into syncing my music library, it iTunes and my computer freeze up.
To isolate the problem, I plugged my ipod back into my XP computer and it works fine and syncs the entire library, so I know its not the ipod. Its a problem with iTunes and Vista together when an ipod is being connected.
Does anyone have insight on this problem or possible fixes?

I know Vista x64 is picky about drivers. It seems there is a 64 bit installer for iTunes so I am assuming you are using that?
"64-bit editions of Windows Vista or later require the iTunes 8 64-bit installer "
As far as the iPod itself, maybe it also needs the 64 bit driver and perhaps the x64 iTunes will take care of that. If it does change the driver, it may not be useable in the XP senario.

  • IPOD + window vista

Hi, I connected my photo ipod to windows vista via USB. The screen just went blank slowly....and the Ipod won't start
Then I removed the ipod and tried to charge via a power socket it came back on....but when I removed the charger the charged battery icon did not go and the Ipod won't switch off.
Please help...what is the problem vista or the USB port?

Ok...I reseted the Ipod and it is working ...but it does go back to the Charged icon even though I have not connected it to any power source....I just reset it again....
But when I connect it to Vista It recognises Ipod as a unknown device ...I installed latest itunes....Changed USB port ...connected another device to the same USB port that worked...But Ipod won't...
tried connecting ipod to my laptop and it works fine there...on XP SP2?
Please help what am I missing?

  • Classic 160 ipod / windows vista media player stops working

After I download itunes and Quiktime along with my ipod classic 160, my windows media player stops playing dvd's & cd's. Any fixes known. I've tried regedit using the register editor 3 times with no luck. Like the ipod but to uninstall itunes everytime I want to watch a dvd / listen to a cd, is a pain in the backside. Thanks for sharing. PS. I've contacted Gateway,Apple,Microsoft with no luck. Statements mostly heard are sorry can't help and to contact the others I previously typed. Pass the buck. wish I had bought the zune.

Try to remove the old (Npdsplay dll in the plugins list) WMP plugin in case that is used.

  • IPod is not recognized by Windows Vista - possible solution

During the past couple of weeks that I faced this problem I found out that a lot of people had the same question as I did.
    Here is a possible solution.
I have HP Pavilion laptop with Windows Vista. After I connected my new iPod – it didn’t show up in My Computer as a new device and in Device Manager it was listed in “Other devices” with a question mark next to it. I already had iTunes installed – it didn’t show up in iTunes. On the attempt to reinstall the driver I had a message that the driver was found but an error occurred while installing it.
    Here is what I did:
    1. Install iTunes (it has iPod driver for Vista in it).
    2. Turn on iPod and connect it to computer.
    3. Restart computer with iPod turned on and connected to computer.
    4. On the start up the computer will begin automatically installing the driver and the message will appear in the corner that new device is being installed.
    5. After it has been installed – check My Computer – you should see it listed there.
    6. Run iTunes and configure iPod.
iTunes might run a little bit slow when configuring iPod for the first time.
    Good luck.

if only this fix worked for windows xp or even 2000 (at my job)
insane, but it IS a driver/usb problem i now know, at least i've gotten that far.

  • IPod not recognized by iTunes, Windows Vista prompts to format iPod drive

    Hello,
I have IPod 80GB which I rarely use. Yesterday  when I wanted to use it, I went to add a few new audios to it, connected to my computer and launched iTunes. I added the folder which contained audios to iPod, synced it and wanted to disconnect, but iTunes took excepionally long to finish.
When I clicked on 'eject' icon, I go a message saying 'some files are being accessed' or something like that. I waited for 5-10 minutes but it won't finish up, so I unplugged my iPod as I had to leave.
Later when I wanted to play, I noticed I had no audios in iPod at all.
Later when I got home, connected it again to computer, launched iTunes, but iTunes won't show iPod. A few minutes later, windows (Vista) prompted a message saying that it needs to format N: drive (which was iPod).
I tried diagnostics on tis site, restarted/reset iPod etc, but it didn't solve the problem. I removed and reinstalled iTunes as per instructions, still no use.
Then I called Apple support Canada and the guy on the phone said I need to pay to get support. He said he'd send me some documents via email which would solve the problem and hen I wouldn't have to pay. I gave him my email address, but so far I have recieved no emails from him. I have checked my spam and junk folders, just in case, but nothing there.
Anyhow, this issue came up all of a sudden, there has been no physical damage to iPod, I barely use it. maybe for few minutes here and there a month. I have had numerous problems in the past every time a new iTunes update come, it always creates problems. Last year I spent many hours after iTunes update make iPod unrecognizable so I had to go back to older version, then upgrade etc. I don't remember how I solved the issue, but it took a while and it turned out to be something of iTunes version issue.
I wonder if this is another of such issue. I hope its not a hardware issue with iPod. I'd appreciate any help.
    Thanks

I just got Vista too and it does recognize my ipod, but itunes can't find a lot of my songs on the computer. I tried to uninstall itunes and reinstall it thinking that it would seach for new music when I installed it again but nothing new happened when I did that.

  • Windows Vista & Ipod

My old computer crashed and I purchased a new on with windows vista on it. I tried to transfer my songs purchased on itunes to the new computer from my ipod but it would only transfer a little more than half of them and it won't allow me to add my just purchased songs to my ipod. It keeps asking me to sync my ipod with my computer but if I do won't it delete all my songs on my ipod? It also keeps asking me to update my ipod but it can't finish, it errors with a message of error 1417 or error -50? I alos have an ipod nano and have had no problems with it on the new computer which leads me to believe it may be a ipod video/windows vista problem. Any help with this would be appreciated.

this article may help answer your question.... iPod and iTunes currently are not supported with Vista but some may work , but all features may not functionhttp://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305042

  • Windows Vista is not bringing up my Ipod

I currently purchased a new Dell XPS420 with windows vista. When I connect my
ipod (which has a total of 7663 songs, copied with the use of my laptop and windows XP), I do not see the ipod in the device section and is not able to do anything with it, when using windows vista. What must I do to be able to work with ipod using windows vista?

Recently, a friend of mine experienced a similar problem after changing his operating system from xp 2 vista. By now he unfortunately hasn’t found a solution for this issue and had 2 copy his data manually over my mac.

  • Windows Vista not recognizing my new 160GB ipod classic

I'm having a terrible time getting Windows Vista or itunes to recognize my 160GB ipod classic (ipod software version 1.0.3 PC). I've spent the last two days going through the 5 Rs (4 or 5 times, now)... updated all the USB drivers... reassigned my slave drive letter to make sure there's no conflict... nothing is working.
The ipod is seen in the Device Manager as an "unknown device", but that's it.
The "USB Mass Storage Device" and "Apple ipod Controller" are listed under the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" and all drivers are up to date.
When I try to update and install the driver for the "unknown device", it automaticly searches windows and the internet, but finds nothing. When I point it towards my C:\Windows\System32 folder (as suggested elsewhere) it locates a driver... but encounters an "unknown error" when installing.
Absolutely nothing works! I'm not new to itunes, ipods or working with Windows Vista. This is terribly frustrating as I now have a $350 paperweight! Ironiclly, I just sold and sent off my 5g 60GB (WORKING!) ipod, too!
    Ugggggghhhhhhhh!!!
    Please, please, please help!

Update: (Not that anything is fixed yet)
Deleting infcache1 (as suggested elsewhere) had no effect... nor did moving around the usbappl.inf files forom the file repository as described here: http://teknobabble.wordpress.com/200...er-a-solution/
Vista just keeps asking for a driver and when I point it towards one... runs into an error when intalling. The hotfix provided adressing this exact issue (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940199) hasn't worked nad I get an error saying "This update doesn't apply to your system". O Rly!?! Hmmmm... Windows Vista 32... exact same error when mounting my ipod. Sure SOUNDS like it SHOULD!
Tried this fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925196/en-us but actually found the CD/DVD upper and lower filters in a different key: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. Still no joy, though. Starting itunes just gives an error message saying it requires the registry entry to burn CD's and asks that I re-install itunes. Attempts to connect prior to reinstalling (since it still runs) have no effect.
Tried restarting itues service http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307078 but it just hangs. Reinstalling and restarting has no effect.
It just kills me that I can see the ipod connected in the Device Manager ("unknown device") and in Computer Management/Storage/Disc Management ("Rmovable Disc 1" with 148 GB).
So frustrating. This is the first problem I've run into with Vista that has stumped me for more than 24-hours and has really got me feeling stupid.

  • Windows Vista, Itunes 10.7, ipod Classic, scan and fix message - why?

I am trying to connect my wife's Ipod Classic to our Windows Vista computer.  I get a Scan and Fix Message for the Ipod from Windows.  I don't let it scan and click continue.  Itunes is frozen and won't recognize the ipod.  This has happened since upgrading to Itunes 10.7.  Also Itunes is choppy in playing all video content since upgrading to Itunes 10.7.
I have checked system requirements and driver upgrades.  So far I have no fix.  One site recommended turning off WiFi sync for all devices in Itunes.  But of course the device must be connected, and mine won't connect.  All my itunes video is languishing.  :-(

Wi-Fi sync won't apply since you have an iPod Classic and it doesn't contain any Wi-Fi hardware.
To get rid of the Scan and Fix error, see this page: http://www.yourlocaltech.com/resolve-vista-scan-and-fix-error-when-plugging-in-i pod-or-other-devices/
    We'll start there for now.

  • Windows vista 64 bit and ipod nano

Hi, we are having problems getting our 3 new ipod nano generation 5 to work on our windows vista computer. Itunes won't recognize them have tried to uninstall itunes but get a message to verify we have sufficient access to that key, or contact support personnel, and then we click ok and it stops the uninstall does anyone know how to correct this problem or what we need to do to get the ipods to work on itunes with windows vista 64bit computer? I saw an answer for a 32bit computer but read that it is different for a 64bit computer. Thanks!

I, too, am having the same problems. Very frustrating to have a nano 4 generation that needs only the latest iTunes software but a computer that requires 64 bit software.
If you get an answer, let me know. I even paid to have music loaded on my nano ipod yesterday and because it was attached to my computer, when I booted up, it somehow went to checkdisk mode and cleaned all the music out! Am ready to throw it out and get a non-Mac ipod instead. But if you have THE answer, I'd really like to hear about it. Thanks.
