IPod with corrupt OS... trying to restore... Help!

Okay, I was cleaning out under my bed when I found my 4th generation 40 gig iPod which I can't used for about 6 months. I go to turn it on, the Apple logo comes up, and then I get the folder with the mark.
I connected the iPod to my computer by USB and FireWire. The iPod connects, but before Windows connects with it and iPod Updater can use the iPod, the iPod just resets. This happens every time.
I also tried doing this on my iBook, but before iPod updater can recognize and before the iBook can recognize it, it resets.
Any Suggestions? Please help!

Follow these instructions to "Force" disk mode: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Basically, you hold some buttons down while rebooting the iPod (and without it connected to a computer). It goes into disk mode, and then you connect it to a computer. In this mode, it should not be able to exit disk mode by itself.
If you follow those instructions and the iPod still resets, then there's two possibilities:
-You're not providing power to the iPod while it's connected, so it resets because the spike when it tries to spin up the drive makes it run low on power and thus reset, or
-The iPod is broken, badly, and needs to be replaced.

I just updated my ipod(30GB) with new stuff..and suddenly it froze. I unplugged it..plugged it back in..restarted itunes and when i did a box popped up saying that the ipod is corrupted and i need to restore it. But how can i restore it if itunes isn't recognizing it..because it won't show up on itunes now.

I unplugged the ipod. restarted my computer then plugged it back in and then it worked fine for me.

IPod classic corrupted and won't restore on Windows

So I have an 80Gb iPod classic. While I was transferring some files something went wrong with the USB connection and iTunes immediately froze and so did my iPod. So I reconnected my iPod and now it won't let me transfer any files because it keeps getting stuck. Then I tried to restore and got an error that I was unable to restore. I disconnected my iPod and it seems like it restored because the next thing I knew everything has been wiped out. But when I connected it to my PC a message appears that the iPod is corrupted and a windows prompt appears telling me to format the disk. So here's what I've done.
-formatted the iPod in FAT32
-connected the iPod, no 'iPod corrupted' message appears.
-tried to restore, but received the same error message, won't restore
-when iPod disconnected it went through the same cycle (iPod restoring-then iPod corrupted-iPod needs to be formatted)
-went to Apple service center, they restored it using a mac and everything went smoothly, song were able to be transferred without a glitch.
-however will not work on PC needs to be restored again
can someone help to shed some light? is there something wrong with the hard disk? If yes, then why can it be restored through mac but not windows?
what can i do to solve this problem?

I was sort of relieved to read that I am not the only one with freezing issues.
I have been to the apple store twice only to be told there is nothing wrong and of course my warranty has expired !! I have the Model A1136 EMC No. 2065 80gig classic ipod. My dell computer is only 2 weeks old and works fantastic, however, when I open itunes and my ipod and it freezes, so does my pc and I have to do a task manager to get out of itunes and there are times when I can't and have to reboot my pc.
Well it has been two weeks now of me trying all that I can to fix the issue and only thing I can see so far that it freezes up when its in the analyzing the gapless sound upon adding music from my folders, etc etc. So I tried to "uncheck" everything that had to do with the sound and it worked. Oh and by the way, try setting your ipod on disk mode when you are trying to restore the ipod. It works better that way. Don't know what is going on but I am so angry with myself for being so attached to this ipod There is nothing out there that compares to my ipod and it's amazing the prices of mp3 that even come close to 80 gigs.

Ok well, A few weeks ago I lost my ipod, and i just recently found it last week. It was completely out of battery so I charged it for a while, and then now whenever I try turning it on, it won't work giving me a folder icon and saying i should go to "apple.com/support/ipod". I tried that and I tried everything they told me on the site, then when I tried plugging it in and playing iTunes, it said my iPod was corrupted and that I should restore it. I tried that also, except whenever I try to restore it, it says "iPod could not be restored (Error 1418)". I've tried everything on the site, yet the same error still shows up. Any help please?
The iPod I'm talking about here is a 4th generation ipod with clickwheel (20 GB). Also please note that between the times I lost the ipod and found it again, I got a new computer with new iTunes and everything if that makes a difference at all.

The exact thing has happened to me as well. I plugged my ipod into the usb port of a computer at my university (to just charge the battery) without realizing that itunes was not installed on there. Since then, each time I attempt to restore my ipod I get something that says "There was a problem downloading the ipod software for the iPod 'iPod'. The requested resouce was not found." I don't know what to do, I have latest versions of both itunes and the ipod software.

IPod with click wheel - will not restore

I know I've got the dinosaur of the iPods, but hey. I have a 20g iPod with click wheel. Every time I load up iTunes with the iPod plugged into the PC, iTunes tells me that my iPod is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. (Not sure how that happened, but anyway.) So, I tell it to restore, then plug it into the external power supply as it tells me to do. However, when it is finished restoring, and I plug it back into the PC to reload the songs from iTunes, the cycle starts again. I have restarted my computer, done soft resets of my iPod, but it still won't update. Any help would be appreciated. Though the newer iPods are very pretty, I am quite happy with my old dinosaur, haha.

After a lot of searching and working on this, I found the problem - and it wasn't my previously theorized conspiracy to get us all to buy more from Apple.... It was quite simple actually.

I unplugged all but my wireless keyboard. Then I used a different USB port for my iPod than I had tried before. It updated..... Yeah. I don't have to buy one of the new over priced fancy models!!!!

IPod with click wheel, refuses to restore

This problem is hapening with my first iPod, click wheel model.
I am trying to restore it but it doesn't allow to do so.
When the iPod is disconnected from the Mac, pressing the MENU and/or Selection button, I get a folder's clipart while turning it on, and the message www.apple.support/ipod (reason why I am here now).
If I connect my iPod to my iMac, it detects it with a problem and proposes a restore. I then start the restore èrocess and after 1 minutes the process stops and the message I get is "can't restore, iPod is busy". I tried to disconnect it, reconnect it but same problem.
Also very strange, looking at the support website, it says that itunes would propose various restore options but I don't get any....version of software on my iPod is 3.1.1. vesrion of iTunes I have installed is 7.7.1
Is there another way to format the iPod, thanks for your help !

Try forcing your iPod into disk mode:
Ensure the HOLD switch is OFF so that there is NO orange color showing beneath the switch. Then, press and hold the MENU and the SELECT (center) buttons together for about 10 seconds, until you see an Apple logo. When you see the Apple, IMMEDIATELY press and hold the SELECT (center) and the PLAY/PAUSE buttons together until you see a check mark, and the iPod says "Disk Mode, OK to Disconnect."
Once it is in disk mode, reconnect it to the computer and see if you can restore it in iTunes.
The various software versions may reflect an older utility used to restore the iPod (called the iPod Updater, available in /Applications/Utilities/. With the release of iTunes 7, that piece of software was no longer necessary, and iTunes is supposed to automatically detect and download the most recent version of your iPod software.

Ipod froze when i tried to restore

i tried to restore it then it started to and i dont think it finished but now it just has a backlit apple logo on it

i have the same problem im not exactaly sure what happend but when i plugged my ipod into the computer it said it was corrupt and i need to restore so i clicked restore and the the ipod when to a blacklight screen and the apple icon and every once and a while it goes to a very low battery screen and then it tells me to please wait but no matter what i do it always goes back to the blacklight apple screen PLEASE HELP

Lost iPod in fire and trying to restore files from external hard drive

I've got a similar issue to folks who are trying to restore their Library from an external source, but with a new twist. We suffered a house fire, and my iPod was destroyed. Amazingly an external hard drive I had done some backups to survived (mostly) and I have several of my iTunes songs, but when I tried to import them into my new computer (and new license of iTunes) I can't get anything to work. I tried manually copying the files over to the iTunes folder and then "importing a file" into my Library but it doesn't do anything. any ideas?

Thank you for the suggestion. I was moving them in Finder, (just as the Genius showed me but obviously he wasn't quite a genius after all!) However, even after moving a file onto the external drive within iMovie like you suggested, it's still not working. Trying to open the files from the external drive, they will only open in QuickTime Player, and also only as individual clips. Any other suggestions would be very much welcomed!

IPod is corrupted and I cannot restore it

I message pops up into the iTunes written that my iPod is corrupted and I am supposed to restore it. While doing so it never finishes becasue another message appears saying my iPod cannot be written off!
Would somebody have any tip to solve it?

Error 1 when trying to restore HELP!!!!!

Hi, I am trying to restore my ipod to 1.1.1 but i keep getting the error "the iPod "iPod" could not be restored an unknown error occoured. What do I do HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have not verified that this will let you downgrade to 1.1.1. I have verified that this will let you downgrade to 1.1.2, however I don't recall if I was using iTunes 7.6 or 7.5 (likely 7.5). If so, you'll need to uninstall 7.6 and reinstall 7.5. You may also have to downgrade in steps...1.1.3 > 1.1.2 > 1.1.1. You will also need to locate/download the firmware files for 1.1.1/1.1.2
1. Plug in your iPod touch and let it finish syncing in iTunes
2. Hold down POWER and HOME
3. Wait until the iPod disappears from your source list, then let go of POWER but, keep holding HOME
4. Then let go of HOME when the iPod appears back in your source list
5. iTunes should now detect an iPod in recovery mode
6. Hold down OPTION (or SHIFT in Windows) and click the "Restore" button and navigate to the 1.1.2 firmware on your hard drive. If you've downloaded it through iTunes, you'll find it in ~/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates
7. Choose the 1.1.2 file and restore your iPod to 1.1.2.

Since it sounds like you have already tried all the usual and available troubleshooting techniques, I would make a trip to your local Apple store/Genius Bar and have them take a look at it. Your iPod is still under Apple's 1 year warranty that cover any defects (but not accidental damage!).

My Ipod recently told me that I had to restore it with iTunes. When i do, however, my computer just tells me I have to restore it before I can use it with iTunes. This cycle goes on and on. Also a notable problem, if I turn off my iPod when it is not connected to my laptop, it just turns on again. I have to keep it connected to make sure it does not run out of battery power.

You might want to try running Chkdsk on your iPod, since a restore doens't seem to be fixing the issue here.
First, restore your iPod once more in iTunes.
Then, check for disk errors. For information on chkdsk, see this MD document about it:

After running Chkdsk, try restoring your iPod in iTunes again.
Do you still get that "corrupt" error message?

Mini's firmware file not found when trying to restore HELP!!!

i just got my ipod mini serviced today because it was acting funny when it was fully charged or had some battery it would shut down saying no battery power. The guy at the store restored my ipod on his MAC system. I use WINDOWS system and when i tried to put my songs back on it, it said it needed to be restored to working with the windows. then after i clicked that i wanted to restore it, it said the ipod's fireware could not be found. HELP!!! what do i do?
