IPod without backup, 'Restoring'?
My iPod 4th gen has gone into 'restore mode' but when it did (when i was updating) it disconnected and i dont think i have a backup, what do i do?
Try and force your iPod into Recovery Mode
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

I have a fifth gen. iPod touch and due to various problems that have occured, I'm getting a replacement. Obviously I don't want to lose all the data I have already on my broken iPod (especially camera roll and app data), so I was wondering if I back it up to iTunes can I then restore that data onto a new iPod?

If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

I updated my ipod touch to 5.1.1 and did a system restore. All of my purchased music from itunes went back on along with photos and apps but now it won't let me sync music that I downloaded. All of my music that was imported from cd's synced but not my downloaded music from internet. They went into my itunes library but they are a light gray and have a little sync symbol next to them. I've tried dragging them into different folders but nothing is working. I read that others were having problems with this update but didn't get any answers.
After you have updated your device to version 5.1.1, have you tried resyncing everything from your iTunes yet?

My friend's iPod touch 5th gen is locked somehow for 41 years and she does not have a backup. Is there a way to unlock the iPod without restoring it or loosing the pictures and videos from the camera roll, the applications can be redownloaded and she had no music. Your friend may have placed the ipod next to an object that repeatedly pressed the screen. Under certain circumstances this can lead to what appears to the iTouch to be failed attempts to access the system. After repeated failed attempts, the Touch increases the waiting time required for the password and may ultimately lock in the way you describe.

After inserting the original DVD I installed OSX and after reboot I had a working computer.
There was no opportunity to restore the TM backup. however when I rebooted from the
DVD again I saw that possibility from a menu of the install utility.
I ran through the restore over night (8 hours) and when I woke up, I had my computer back!

You cannot.
That is what a restore does. It erases everything and reinstalls the ios.
If you are using the ipod as designed then everything is on your computer, so you can resync everything, and you can restore from your backup to get the settings back. -

The only way to unlock it is to follow the steps in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212 or one of the similar knowledge base articles, which includes restoring the device. If you have a current backup you can do that and remove the passcode.

On windows go to my documents>tools>folder options>view....and then under hidden files and folders go to show hidden files and folders.After doing this open itunes connect your ipod..wait for itunes to load it..then go to file>add files to library..then go to my computer..find your ipod drive go to ipod control>music..then go to each folder click one song then press control+a go to open..then do this until all songs and videos are loaded from each folder..I have a 30g ipod and i was having problems that needed me to restore but all 3rd party software wanted me to pay..i found this solution and wanted to help out others in need..enjoy
The only items directly accessible on the iPod without iTunes and without a third-party program is the phot file. That is in the DCIM folder as show in windlows explorer. That is what you are seeing.
You iTunes library, music, apps video should be included in the computeer backup tht you periodically make. Also include the location for the iPod backup. You can find the location of that file and of what is in that file here:

Tell me what you mean by restoring without updating. What version of itunes are you running. Do you have a 1st Gen or a 2nd Gen Touch. Is there software up to date? version 2.2?
Left side panel of itunes should show (Library, Store, Devices)
Devices - Click Touch - screen with the tabs should be visible. Right click on Touch name under devices, should show (Eject, New Playlist, Sync, Transfer Purchases, Backup, Restore from Backup, Reset Warnings) list.

"Connect to a computer. Use iTunes to restore." When I connect to a computer, iTunes doesn't recognise it. The iPod 5th Gen does not work at all. How do I fix my iPod without losing any data?
I have seen the Apple webpage suggesting the "five R's" (including restore). Before doing anything, I want to be sure that restoring or any other action is not going to delete or risk my data.
I would be very grateful if anyone can suggest a fix for this problem, in a way that will not risk my data.

To do a hard reset, first make sure the hold switch is in the Off position, then press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
