IPod won't appear in iTunes or Desktop until I reset every time

Hi All. Sorry if this has been covered. I read the article on this (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60950), but it didn't help.
My problem:
I have the 30gb 5th-gen iPod and an Intel 1.83 Mac mini (10.4.8). Recently, every time I plug in the iPod, the computer refuses to mount it. The iPod screen displays the "Do not disconnect" message, but the computer and iTunes don't see it. If I perform a soft reset (middle button + Menu) the computer will then recognize the iPod, but I have to do this every time!
I looked at and tried the suggestions in the Apple support document listed above, but none of them resolve the issue. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Kevin

I have a similar problem well its more serious though -- I accidentally unplugged my 80 GB video iPod prematurely from my Intel based Mac Mini without ejecting it in iTunes and now the iPod is stuck on the Do Not Disconnect screen even after it was unplugged -- plugging it back in does not help any.
I have tried restarting my Mac Mini with it plugged in does not help at all -- tried pressing the hold switch back and forth on my iPod a 5th generation video version nothing -- iPod does not appear on my Mac Desktop, any Finder windows nor does it appear in Disk Utility or iTunes.

  • IPod won't appear in iTunes or in My Computer. Help please

    Hello
my iPod is fully charged (2nd gen nano), and charged up last night.
When i plug it in to put more songs on, it won't appear in iTunes or my computer. I know that the USB port is working fine, becuase i tried my pen drive and that was fine, and the iPod screen lights up.
I've dont the first 4 R's - Reset, Retry, Restart and Reinstall.
But i don't really want to do Restroe, because it will wipe everything off my iPod, and if i then still can't get it to sync, then i'm abit screwed.
    Any toher ideas from anyone?
    Any help would be good
    thankyouu
    xx

When the screen lights up, is there anything on the display? If it's just a white lit up screen, try to force it into disk mode (which can be difficult if you can't see anything). Essentially, turn the hold switch off so there's no orange color beneath it, hold the menu & middle buttons for 10 seconds and then immedidately hold the middle & play/pause buttons for 10 seconds. If it appears in iTunes at this point you may want to consider restoring.
If this is not the case and you see the normal display when it's connected to the computer, I'd suggest connecting it to a different USB port (preferably one directly on the back of the computer - avoid connecting the iPod via USB hubs, keyboards, printers, etc). Try this step even though your USB port works with other devices. You might also try a different USB cable if you have one from another iPod.

  • Songs inside disappeared and the iPod won't appear on iTunes & Windows!

Well, the iPod started showing this icon with a folder and an exclamation mark, so I reset it a few times. Prior to that, some of the songs didn't play properly. This hasn't happened before though.
So I connected it to the computer and reset it but nothing seemed to happened. I tried putting it on Disk Mode but still, same results. What's worse is that it wouldn't even appear on iTunes and My Computer anymore. Even if it does to the latter, the window just freezes when I try to access the drive.
Then I unplugged it and found that all of the songs disappeared! I then checked the memory available and it showed that I only had 492 MB / 18.5 GB available. What the **** is happening here?
I'm using the old-school iPod. With non-color LCD display, 20 GB. I have yet to try installing the new version of iTunes (but other than that, what can other ways can you folks recommend me?).
Can anyone help me out? My head's starting to spin already. :[

  • IPhone 3G won't appear in iTunes or desktop

HI there folks, I recently upgraded the OS X from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8, before the upgrade the iphone would automatically sync up with the itunes and do what it does best. However now nothing happens, iphoto will load up and show the pics on my phone, but itunes won't detect the phone even if i shut it down and reopen it with the phone plugged in. I also restarted the computer and phone and still nothing, I'm running itunes 9.0.2 and I'm sure it was the same version when I upgraded to leopard I believe.

    Hi Andy,
Try downloading and reinstalling the latest version of iTunes from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Hey, I've tried 2 different connectors but it's not registering at all. At first the computer registered it but acted like it was a digital camera or some other device and would let me into folders but wouldn't open it in iTunes, and now I'm getting nothing from it - any thoughts?! Thanks

  • IPod does not appear in ITunes updated for OS X 10.10

My iPod does not appear in iTunes, the desktop, or under devices in the newly downloaded version OS X 10.10. Is there a way to have it displayed?

I am also having this problem.  My 120GB and 160GB Classics, neither will show up anywhere on 10.10.
Not in the system report under USB, not in iTunes, the screens don't show that they are connecting.
    Quite annoying..

  • 5G iPod won't appear on my desktop or iTunes using USB 2.0

My new 5G iPod won't appear on my desktop or iTunes when I have it connected to a new 2.0 USB card in my G4 733. I know the USB card works because my old iPods work through it. My new iPod only will work through the old USB 1.0 port. I've reset it (with it attached to the computer) and done all that Apple says to do.

I am having a similar problem with my Nano. Shows up in itunes, but freezes up under USB 2.0. Other devices work fine on the card, usb 1.1 has no problems, and if I update music on my nano on the 1.1 port, and then plug it into the 2.0 port I can still update Calenders onto the iPod via iTunes.
Also, i applied the ipod updater and since this was happening under Panther, upgrading to Tiger made no difference, so I can't see this being a software error.

  • How come my iPod Touch (5th Generation) won't appear in iTunes?

My iPod Touch (5th Generation) won't appear in iTunes. I've never had any problem like this until we got that new charger and USB cord that comes with the 5th Generation. We just barely managed to get it to charge with my HP laptop. Before the device was considered "unknown" and was rejected by my computer, but then I found an article that said to uninstall the USB driver or whatever, and we did so, so now it's able to charge. We got all happy, thinking that it was going to apear in iTunes now, but it's still not there. It's said to be "Apple iPod" whenever it pops up after being connected to the computer, but it doesn't open in iTunes. I tried going under "File" and then "Device", and then trying to sync, but it appears gray and won't let me click on it. I don't know how to get it to open there. Can anyone help me? Please?

    - Reboot the computer
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    Then try again.

  • IPod doesn't appear in iTunes or on desktop

My iPod does not appear in iTunes or on the desktop even though it is charging though the firewire. Can anyone help? I tried the steps recommended in the support section of Apple's website, but nothing changed.

My iPod knows it's plugged into my Mac. It charges, shows up in the Finder, and very very occasionally even pops up in iTunes. Here's the thing though, it's about a 1 in 50 chance of iTunes recognising the iPod is plugged in, even when the Finder does.
I've gone through the endlessly entertaining process of restoring the iPod software (it's currently at 2.3, and was when the problem first showed up), unplugging and plugging it in countless times, and finally reinstalling 10.4. Things became flakey, albeit workable, from the day I first installed 10.4.
After reinstalling 10.4, the problems persisted. So when I saw iTunes 4.8 had been released this morning, I hoped a quiet fix had been included. First time it ran, my iPod showed up, but the second time, same old problem. It's present in the Finder, Disk Utility knows it's there, it works with iSync (or did when I last synced anyway), but iTunes usually completely ignores the device.
When it does show its face in iTunes, I haven't done anything special as far as I can tell (well, besides restarted my Mac, reset the iPod, and reconnected it countless times).
I'm lost for options. Next step is calling Apple.

  • Replacement iPod won't show in iTunes 6.0.5

I purchased a 60GB video iPod Feb 2006 from the online store and the HOLD button stopped working, 3 days ago.
I went to an Apple retail store and received a brand new replacement iPod against the 1 year warranty.
I brought the new iPod home and it spent 1 1/2 days reloading my music (6,844 songs, no pic, no vids).
    Everything was fine :)
I made several changes to songs in my iTunes and added more music and connected the new iPod to my Dock:
    1) The iPod appears on my Desktop like usual, but not in iTunes.
    2) All of the icons in the menu bar on the top right corner, flash continuously.
    3) When I have another App open while the iPod is still connected, iTunes keeps popping to the front, as if something is going to change/update, but nothing ever happens. And when I switch back to the app I was using, iTunes just poppes back to the front again. I tried quitting iTunes, but it just opens itself back up again.
    4) I left the iPod connected and iTunes open during this weird behavior, thinking maybe it's just taking longer to update, but after 4 hours, there's been no change.
    5) I've tried 4 out of 5 of the R's, haven't tried RESTORE just yet.
    6) I opened iSync app just to see if the iPod would be recognized, and it was BUT it gave an error after updating saying the iPod was not available for an update.
    7) I have not and will not be updating to iTunes 7 or 7.0.1 because I am still running OSX 10.2.8. I am using iTunes version 6.0.5
What in the world could have happened in only a matter of hours to this iPod?
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

First of all, try another port on your computer. Some ports are not connected direct to the motherboard and do not recognize the iPod as well as those that are. Reset the iPod each time you connect it to another port.
    Still no joy, see these.
