Ipod won't connect with USB 2.0

When I connect my ipod to my computer using a USB 2.0 socket, it comes up with the do not disconnect screen for a few seconds then changes to 'ok to disconnect' with a tick on it.
But when I connect it to a USB 1.1 socket it works fine. It doesn't seem to be a USB card fault as all my other devices work with the card, just not the ipod.

hmmmm. are there any other USB peripherals attached to the same card when you're trying to sync the ipod, Outtathaway?
(i've seen a few cases where power drain on other USB ports was interfering with ipod/USB 2.0 connectivity.)
what make and model of USB 2.0 card are you using? (i understand from my occasional visits to the Fifth Generation Ipod forums that cards with the NEC chipset seem to be giving people the best performance.)

  • IPods won't connect with USB hub

I have a 7-port powered Trust USB 2.0 hub, in which my keyboard, EyeTV, printer, and two HDDs work perfectly. However my iPods are, at best, finicky with it. I have an 80GB 6th gen classic, which some of the time will connect happily and other times won't be recognised. Even more strangely, my shuffle (latest gen 1GB) will barely ever be recognised. When it is, iTunes may or may not be willing to try and sync it, but then the whole app will just hang until I physically remove the shuffle, at which point it instantly starts working again. What's more, these issues can be replicated even if each is the only device plugged in to the hub, and both are absolutely fine if plugged in to their very own port. I have tried restoring the shuffle many many times.
It's mightily frustrating, and I'd appreciate some guidance on how to rid myself of the issue!

Well my Shuffle got nicked, so never mind...

  • 3rd gen ipod won't connect with firewire.

3rd gen ipod won't connect to itunes with firewire. USB connects rarely but drains battery quickly. I've rebooted the ipod and computer and updated itunes. No effect. Any remedies besides buying a new ipod.

Answer to Question 1: - I connected the iPod with the USB, went to Disk Utility and erased the iPod. Now the iPod works with USB.
Question 2 is still unanswered. Ideas?

  • 3rd gen iPod won't connect with firewire...how can I restore it?

As many others have had this problem, my iPod only charges when connected with firewire. When I connect with USB, it says "Use the iPod Software Updater application to restore the iPod to factory settings"
When I try the iPod Software Updater, it says I need to connect via Firewire.
Question 1: Any ideas on how to restore the iPod?
Question 2: Any ideas on how to get the firewire functional again?
    Many thanks in advance

  • 5th gen ipod won't connect to usb 3, is there a fix?

I have an ipod video (5th gen), and it won't connect to my new asus laptop since it only has usb 3 ports (I don't care if it will charge or not, I have a dock), my question is whether it could potentially connect to my computer so I could sync it if I use a usb 2 hub or something similar. My ipod recently formatted itself when it forced a reset, so I have to get my music all back. Anyone know a fix to it? Thanks for any help you guys can give me, really driving me crazy not having music to listen to when I'm out...

You did install the latest version of iTunes on your new computer, correct?  Installing iTunes is how the software needed for iPods to be recognized as iPod gets installed.  Otherwise, Windows sees it as a generic device.

If the iPod is recognized by Windows, but not iTunes, you should go through this trouble-shooting document.

FYI - My 3rd gen iPod from 2003 works fine with the latest iTunes; there's no such thing as an iPod that is too old.

  • 3rd Gen iPod won't charge with USB connector - Is that normal?

I have the above iPod, and I noticed that when I tried to plug it in to charge it with a newer USB connector it will not charge. It will however, let me update my iTunes music. Is this normal for an older iPod?

I believe that is correct. That iPod was often called the iPod with 'dock connector', and as this chart shows, won't charge via USB.

  • TS1538 My iPod won't connect with iTunes!

On my ipod a usb symbol pointing towards iTunes is showing up, but every time I plug it into iTunes my device does not show up. My iPod is doing nothing but showing this screen. This is coming after I had an error in updating my iPod and unplugged it. I have already tried restrating my computer, restarting my ipod touch, and changing my usb cable and port. Nothing is working. I really don't care if it updates at this point I just want my iPod to be functional!!

That's why you should always do regular backups.  Not only of the iPod but also of your computer.  I assume that you do not have a backup of the crashed computer (if you do let us know), nor of the iPod on your current computer.  If o backups, there is nothing you can do except to restore the iPod to factory settings.  You should, however, be able to redownload the purchased apps and music associated with your Apple ID, but all of your data will be lost.

  • My ipod won't charge with USB or AC adapter - only Firewire

I recently bought a 3rd gen 20 gig ipod of ebay and it won't charge through USB or AC adapter. When I charge it through firewire, it loses its charge fast, so I am assuming the battery is dead. This still doesn't explain why it won't charge through USB or AC. Does anyone know why this might be? Please help!

good to know that 3G ipods don't charge through usb - but I still don't understand why an AC adapter wouldn't work. I can't even figure out the charging patern - it seems that when I plug it in through USB it drains the battery, but the battery life varies. One minute it will have full charge, then the next it will turn off and say it is empty, then the next it will have half life, all without plugging it in. Frustrating...

  • Ipod won't connect with itunes

My itunes was updating and so was my ipod I think.
But an error occured which has left my ipod at the same screen. The itunes logo + a usb cable pointing to the logo.
Now it wont appear on itunes so it isn't connected.
Windows gives me a message stating "The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it."
I assumed it was my ipod that is playing up but it wont connect any other ipods aswell.
I ran through all procedures on the support page.
Here are my itunes diagnostics. If someone could help that would be AWESOME.

  • IPod won't connect with new version of iTunes

After I downloaded the latest version of iTunes, my device wouldn't connect to my computer. After extensive troubleshooting, I have found that my iPod does not respond to the latest version of iTunes. When I un-install iTunes, my iPod connects. When I try re-installing, it will disconnect. I downloaded an older version of iTunes, and it stayed connected. However, when I went to open iTunes, a pop-up came up and said it couldn't open because my library was updated by a newer version. So, I'm at  a loss of what to do. Someone please help! Thanks in advance!

Did you try simply downloading the latest version of iTunes using the link below and then installing it on top of the older version?

  • My computer crashed and I lost EVERYTHING, and my Ipod won't connect with the new Itunes I got without deleting everything on my Ipod. HELP!

Please help me, this is really upsetting. I really would like my Itunes to work. The message that pops up is saying that it will only transpher purchased items and I downloaded a lot of CDs so if you can please help me it would be lovely.

    Define crash?
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
If you've wiped your computer/bought a new one...
    You should be able to:
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

  • My iPod won't connect to my Mac... Help?

My iPod won't connect with my Mac anymore.
It connected last time I tried it (four months ago, about). It's a Gen Two or Three (I don't know the difference, sorry) and I haven't changed anything about my Mac since then, or my iTunes.
If you can help at all, please reply. And don't hesitate to ask for more info.
EDIT: Oh, and I've tried resetting the iPod, putting it in Disk Mode, using a different USB port and restarting the computer (several times).
The iPod says "Do Not Disconnect" and the iPod symbol appears on Finder and I am able to access it, but it won't appear in iTunes.

I was having the same problem--no iPod on Desktop, no iPod in iTunes. This fixed it for me, at least:
    1. Open Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. (My iPod DID show up here, though it wasn't mounted.)
    2. Select the iPod in the disk list on the left.
    3. Click "Verify Disk." (In my case, this revealed an underlying error.)
    4. Click "Repair Disk." (If this works, great--stop here. It didn't work for me...)
    5. Click the "Erase" tab at the top of the right-hand main pane.
    6. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for Volume Format.
    7. Click "Erase" button at bottom right.
Almost immediately, my iPod showed up on my Desktop, iTunes launched, and it was as though I had completed a Restore of the iPod.
    Hope that helps....
    David
