IPod won't format, won't be recognized by iTunes

Okay so my problem involves a lot of history so let me give you the background information. I first got my iPod a year and a 1/2 ago and it worked just fine I was very happy with it and never had any problems. I set mine up as a harddrive so I could store a couple of text files in addition to about 5GB of music. Then my computer's harddrive died. So I reinstalled iTunes after I bought a new harddrive, but skipped the part about plugging in my iPod because I had to transfer all my CDs back into the music library. I did that then proceeded to plug in my iPod. Of course it didn't sync with iTunes because I had forgotten to reinstall my iPod software. I right clicked my iPod in my computer and clicked format because I thought then it would work. After that I remembered I needed to install the iPod software. So I tried to do that, but when I got to the screen about formatting my iPod the bar just goes up and down for 6 hours and nothing happens. I made sure my iPod was fully charged all the way and tried again with the same results. I then tried to use the iPod updater to restore the factory settings of my iPod and when it finally recognized my iPod it said it was being used by another application, but I had no other programs running. As you can see I've tried just about everything and although both my computer and my iPod are independently working fine they aren't working together. I need help!

I'm having a similar problem with my Ipod (40GB, now discontinued) here's my problem:
My hard drive would spin up and then down and then up and then it would turn off. Also I would turn it on and flip to a song, it would be OK and then if I went to flip to another one the screen would freeze on me for a few seconds, then it would work then continue doing that until I got it to turn off. It did that for a few days and then the other day I turned it on and it wouldn't take me to my music screen and it came up with an Ipod that was dead and a link under it. It did this for a while and now I can't get it to work either, I turn it on now and it comes up with a folder and the apple support website and when I tired restarting it, the screen would come up with a check mark and say "Disk Mode" at the top and "OK to disconnect" below the check mark, and now Itunes doesn't recognize it and the hard drive spins and it goes on acting like iTunes sees it when in truth it doesn't.
Hope someone can help!
Erin

  • I have an ipod classic 120gb. Its not getting recognized by itunes.

I have an ipod classic 120gb. Its not getting recognized by itunes and i am unable to format it even though it says i must if i want it to appear on itunes. It does'nt work on any computer so its not the usb. ive reset it a few times but no luck. Any ideas?
Here is some of the info i got, im not sure however what they represent.
    Retracts: 534
    Reallocs: 216
    Pending Sector: 62
    PowerOn: 1253
    Smart/Stop: 469
    Temp:Current 27c
    Temp:Min 5c
    Temp:Max 56c

If Windows or Mac can recognise it, then reformat it using a Hardisk Partition tool, if not, it is time to replace the Hardisk.
The High Pending Number, indicates some bad cluster, which Hardisk firmware can't reallocate or remapped. This maybe due to, leaving the iPod in a Hot environment, damaging the Hardisk.

my ipod touch 2g is no longer being recognized by itunes why and what can i do i have reset it and everything

If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

My Ipod nano generation 3 is not being recognized by itunes as a device?  It shows it connected by doesnt sync

Thanks KT, after following your advice the iPod nano and the two cameras are now visible in iTunes or iPhoto and also in Finder.
The cameras continue to work consistently with iPhoto but since trying to complete a 'Restore' with the iPod nano I've had a string of error messages and it is now no longer useable. I'll be posting for help on this in the iPod discussion forum.

  • IPod nano won't turn on or be recognized in iTunes or Vista

We recently upgraded to Windows Vista, so I downloaded iTunes 7.2, then plugged in my ipod which was working fine, then it said it had to be updated, but first I needed to update something in windows vista. So I updated Vista and also looked in the help section for ipod and read this:
Microsoft has released an update for Windows Vista that addresses a situation where ejecting iPod from Windows Explorer or by using the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature in Windows Vista could corrupt your iPod. Apple recommends Windows Vista customers who own an iPod install this software update. For information on how to install this Microsoft hot fix, refer to the "Update your software" section below. Tip: iPod can always be ejected safely by choosing Eject iPod from the Controls menu within iTunes.
So, I thought that my ipod would get ruined so I did the "eject ipod" from the control menu in itunes, and after that my ipod never turned on again. What happened, did I do something wrong?
I did the 5 R's already and it does not turn on. It is not even in my computer (device manager) and its not even being recognized in itunes. It just disappeared and it won't turn on. Please help!!!
    Thanks in advance.

  • TS1363 My ipod nano 5th generation is no longer recognized by itunes, and won't play any of it's music.  It still shows it all listed, but freezes up if you select a song to play.  Is there a way to restore it?

My ipod nano 5th generation will no longer play any of it's loaded songs.  It still plays the video that is on it, and the radio works.  It is not recognized by itunes and I have gone through all their help steps.  Is there some other way to restore it?

If the iPod is defective and not abused Apple will exchange it at no cost under your warranty.

  • Ipod Touch version 4.2.1 not recognized by iTunes

All I'm doing is trying to update the songs on it. I know apps and such will no longer update, but it's ridiculous that I can't plug it in and put some songs on. The iPod Touch version is 4.2.1 and my current itunes is 11.5.1. I'm currently using Mountain Lion so 10.8.5 for the computer version.
If I need to get an earlier version of iTunes, can someone tell me how to get it on there? Do I have to get rid of the current itunes version or what?

The current version of iTunes is bacward compatible with all iPods.

  • IPod Touch 4G running iOS 6 not recognized by iTunes 10.7

After updating my iPod Touch 4G to iOS 6 from the device itself and then updating iTunes on my PC to 10.7, whenever I connect the iPod Touch, it gives an error saying "This iPod cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64-bit version of iTunes."
My computer is running on a 64-bit OS, and the version of iTunes I installed is 64-bit. I have already tried the methods given by Apple to fix this (uninstalling iTunes and all other Apple software and reinstall iTunes, running Apple Mobile Support program, etc...). How can I get my iPod Touch to be recognized properly?
*Note: I am still able to update my old iPod Video 5G without a problem*

I agree it it the driver since the diagnostics say:
Apple Mobile Device Driver not found.

  • Ipod classic (photo) and windows version not recognized by itunes on my macbook air. Iphone works fine and previously it also worked out with the Ipod. If someone has an answer that would be great. thanks

itunes on my mac does not any longer show my ipod classic (photo, window formated). It worked before and itunes with iphone just works fine. Any clue? Thanks.

Sorry to jump the gun, but did you connect the iPod via USB Hub on the MB Air?
If plug it into the wrong USB port, which is shared like using a USB Hub, I would suggest connecting the iPod directly to the MB Air and not via USB Hub.
But if you connect directly, have the iPod ever connect to iTunes, without problems, on this MB Air?
You got an old 4G iPod photo, based on iPod Software version 1.2.1
I mean downgrade to the iTunes version, that was working, with your iPod, but try the right USB port first before downgrading iTunes, with earlier version download here.
