IPod won't mount in iTunes

Hello there,
I have a 20gb iPod that's nearly 3 years old & my PC is running Windows XP Professional with SP2. And I've got the latest version of iTunes (7.4.3).
Recently my iPod started behaving strangely, skipping during songs sometimes, and sometimes hanging for several seconds whilst playing.
Anyway, my big problem now is that the iPod won't mount in iTunes & iTunes hangs for ages when the iPod is connected.
The iPod comes up in Windows Explorer as a Removeable Drive called "Apple iPod". This leads me to believe that I may have accidentally put it into disc mode?
All the troubleshooting advice I've read suggests that if I can only get iTunes to recognise it, then iTunes should then automatically load the required software on to the iPod & everything will be hunky dory. That sounds all very well & good but iTunes is not currently seeing the iPod so it's not doing that.
As I've said, the iPod comes up in Windows Explorer, but if I do anything with it, even just right-clicking on it for example, Windows Explorer hangs as well.
Grrrrrrrr!!
I know it is not a cable problem or a PC problem as I have tried several different cables & 3 different PCs, all with the same results.
Please help!

I'm having a similar problem with my sons 3 generation Ipod Nano.
When I plug in my sons Ipod into my Apple G5 running OS X Version 10.4.11 and Apple Itunes 9.0.2... I too can't mount the Ipod on to Itunes.
What I found is that my son plugged his Ipod into a Windows laptop and reformatted his Ipod by accident for MS Windows... now my son is only 10 and didn't know what he was doing and would admit he did it.
How I found out was when I plugged in the two Ipods and hit Get Info
His Ipod Nano had: FORMAT: MS-DOS File System (FAT32)
and my Ipod Nano had: FORMAT: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
I asked him and he admitted that... that's what he did... this is after 5 hours of trying to mount his Ipod.
Now here's the problem: His music and my music is all in the same account on the same computer (That being my G5)
My G5 running the most recent version of Itunes 9.0.2 recognizes all of our other Ipods except his which just shows up on the desktop of my computer... BUT DOES NOT DOW UP IN ITUNES UNDER DEVICES like all the other Ipods.
What I think I need to do is re format his Ipod Nano for Mac... Only problem is Itunes 9.0.2 doesn't allow that to happen.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks

  • IPod won't mount in iTunes 2.0.4

Hi folks - I'm running iTunes 2.0.4 on an aging G3 B&W tower with OS 9.2.2. I have an iPod Dock (the one with the four buttons under the screen) that, for some reason, just won't show up when I plug it in. Not in the Source List, not on the desktop. The iPod acts like it's connecting, but there's no indication on the G3 that it is.
I've tried resetting the Pod, but no difference.
Anybody got any ideas? I used to use the Pod with a little 350 mhz iMac using OSX 10.3 and it worked fine. But no go on the OS 9.
Thanks, from a fellow Mac Fanatic.

The only iPods that will work with OS9 seems to be these two:
iPod with scroll wheel (5 and 10 GB)
iPod with touch wheel (5 GB, 10 GB, and 20 GB)

  • IPod touch running 4.1 won't mount on iTunes 9.2.1 on my mac running 10.4.11

iPod touch running 4.1 won't mount on iTunes 9.2.1 on my mac running 10.4.11

Per the manual for an iPod Touch with 4.1, the iOS/iPod requires OSX 10.5.8 or later for a Mac,.  That is a paid uodate to OSX 10.4.

  • Ipod photo won't mount to itunes - please help me!  i'm desperate!

    Hey everyone,
Thanks in advance to whomever reads this and answers... I've been fighting with my ipod for over 12hrs now (over 3 days) and am VERY frustrated!
    here are my details:
    20 gig ipod photo
    Windows XP
    itunes 7
    Problem:
itunes told me it needed to be restored. So, I went through the process, but when I plugged it back into the computer (after plugging it into the wall socket), I found that it won't mount in itunes! BUT, I can see it in Windows explorer.
    Have tried:
    - changing disk drive
    - uninstall, reinstall, reinstalling from CD (with old version)
    - restore (when it was coming up in itunes)
    - different usb ports
    - fiddling with resets and disk mode
    Things to note:
    - in Windows Explorer it now comes up as IPOD instead of VANESSA'S IPOD. I don't know why!
    - when I plug it into the computer it seems completely happy - it's charged, is flashing the do not disconnect... everything normal! And, when it's not plugged in, I'm able to browse through the menus like normal - the only problem really appears to be that itunes won't recognise it.
I kind of feel like I've been trying a lot of different things, and maybe not in the right order? It feels like something really small that I'm missing...
If you have any ideas or suggestions, please please PLEASE let me know... as I said, I'm desperate...
    cheers

  • 3G Clickwheel Ipod won't mount after update to ITunes 7.0

I recently updated to iTunes 7 and ever since my iPod won't mount. I can't see it on my desktop, and iTunes says the iPod is corrupt. I checked to make sure the Firewire port is working, and as far as I can tell, it is. I have tried to connect the iPod using both USB and Firewire, with the same result. I have also tried another Firewire cord, and that didn't work either.
I don't think the iPod is corrupt, because it was exactly after I updated to 7.0.1 that it stopped mounting. I thought 7.0.2 would resolve this issue, but it has not. The iPod works as it should when not connected to my computer.
I do NOT want to reload the iPod to factory settings, because over 1900 songs would be lost (my hard drive crashed last year, and this is the only place I have of many of these songs). This seems to be a known problem with the new version, but I don't know how to resolve it. Any suggestions?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have the identical problem with my Ipod & Imac. I haven't updated my Ipod for awhile, and although it works just fine independently, once I plug it into either my Imac or Ibook, the computer will not recognize it so I can't add new songs. The ipod doesn't show up in ITunes, in System Profiler, Disk Utility. I'm using Itunes 7.02 and judging from some other newsgroups I have read, there are many Ipod owners with this problem. I hope Apple gets it fixed soon.

  • 5th gen iPod won't sync with iTunes

I have recently upgraded my iTunes to version 8. Now my iPod won't mount. I get the following error when I plug in the iPod: "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes." I've restored at least 6 times and nothing. I have also downgraded to the previous version of iTunes and it still won't work. Please help me. Right now I have a 30Gb lump of coal sitting in my desk. (The restore obviously removed all my music for it.)

Have you had a chance to look at this troubleshooting page? If not, have a look at the bottom section that covers what to try if the message keeps reappearing: iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode - Use iTunes to restore
Towards the end it says "If after restoring your iPod, the message described above reappears, the iPod drive letter may need to be reassigned. See the "Change the Drive Letter" section of this document for steps to assign a different drive letter" which contains a link to this article: Windows confuses iPod with network drive and iTunes may exhibit strange behavior in relation to the iPod.

  • Connected to a different computer and now ipod won't mount

I've searched through the discussions and I can't find anyone who has had this specific problem, but apologies in advance if this issue has already been addressed somewhere I didn't see..
My ipod and ibook have been working perfectly fine together for 6 months. Yesterday I connected my ipod to a friends ibook so we could listen to some music off my ipod on his itunes. He disconnected it without ejecting it first (I wonder if this caused the problem although I've done it before by mistake and had no major problems) and now my ipod won't mount on my desktop.
It shows up in the system profiler and in ipod updater it says ipod connected but unable to mount. When I plug it in I get two error messages saying "You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read" and "A disk attempting to mount -unknown has failed verification or has failed" When I open the disk utility and click repair in the first aid it says "Invalid BTH length" "ipod needs to be repaired"
The ipod still plays perfectly fine when not attached to the computer.
I know the simple solution is to restore the ipod but I'm VERY reluctant to do this as I have some music on my ipod that I can't reload because I didn't keep it in my itunes to save hard drive space and I've just moved countries and the hard copies are back home.
Any advice would be much appreciated!

    unable to mount
that is a hard drive error msg, as are the other msgs you listed... not a good sign.....

  • IPod won't sync to iTunes - Please help! Tried everything

My iPod won't sync to iTunes. I pug it into the computer, the computer recognizes the device. It automatically opens iTunes once it's plugged in. I was able to system restore via iTunes when the iPod was connected and it wiped the iPod. But when I hit sync it doesn't sync. When I hit the sync button for about 5 seconds the wheel will rotate on the iPod screen and say "syncing" but nothing happens on the iTunes side, (you know normally when your iPod is syncing at the top of the iTunes window it will say "syncing" and you can see the process happening as it quickly runs through the new music it is uploading, this doesn't happen.) I tried restarting the iPod and the computer, system reset, I checked in the control panel to make sure the apple device was started, (which it was,) and even bought a new sync cord to be sure. Nothing. Any ideas?

I was running into the same/similar problem. Is this a new computer but old ipod?  In other words, does your ipod contain music from a previous pc?  If so, that might be the problem.  I bought a new pc and adequately transferred my music from old pc to new pc.  My itunes library on new pc was where I wanted it to be.  But when I tried to sync my ipod later, it wouldn't sync.  Would stop at first step like yours was doing.
If this is the case with you, open your ipod information on itunes.  It will automatically be on "Summary".  Click on "Music".  You will see a box labeled "Sync Music".  Click on that box.  Then you have the option of checking "Entire Music Library" or "Selected playlists.....".  I chose entire library.  When you sync, it will warn you that you will be erasing contents of ipod and replacing with contents of this itunes library.  Like I said, my library was good.  So I chose ok.  It synced fine after that.

  • IPod Won't Update - Is iTunes 7 to blame?

I started having problems with my iPod's playback - skipping songs in a playlist and skipping to the next track before the end of the song - I then tried to add songs (and update calenders etc.) using iTunes 7 (having only just downloaded it) and then everything stopped working.
The iPod registered on the computer and in iTunes - the contents of the iPod appeared in ITunes too, but it refused to accept new songs - when I tried to add songs, iTunes said it was updating, but it froze on the second song and iTunes then crashed.
I have restored the iPod and reinstalled iTunes 7, but neither of them work - the iPod won't update and iTunes constantly crashes (particularly when playing and pausing songs). I tried downgrading to iTunes 6.0.5 - which works fine - but the iPod still would not update.
Are these problems due to iTunes 7 being rubbish or do I have a broken iPod?? Is there anything I can try??
I have also just realised my mistake in putting this question in the Fifth Generation iPod forum, as I don't have one. Apologies for that - I have an iPod with click wheel but I don't seem to be able to move the question!

    hi Jim!
Plug in my iPOD, and it says its updating, and I can see the new music on the iPOD from iTunes, but its NOT ON MY IPOD when I unplug and try and play.
sounds like a drive letter confusion on your PC. see:

  • Help!!! ipod won't restore on itunes

my ipod won't restore on itunes because it says this check your network connections are connected and your network connection is active or try again later. i have no idea what this means and i have tried again later and it hasn't worked. also if i can restore can i get my things back? thanks

Try disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall.
    - Next try the manual install method of:
iDevice Troubleshooting 101 :: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch
    - Then try on another computer
You can restore from backup to get things back
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

  • Narrowing down "iPod won't mount" problem

Regarding the "iPod won't mount" problem that has been posted a number of times: is anyone having this problem with a USB connection or just with a Firewire connection?
I'm using Firewire and can't get my iPod to mount. I don't have a USB connector for the iPod and I thought I'd do a little research on the problem before I go buy a USB connector.

My 4th generation Ipod would not mount with the firewire but worked fine with USB.

  • IPod won't mount on desktop/in iTunes...updater useless

I have a second generation iPod (scroll wheel/row of 4 buttons), and iTunes 6.0.4 running on a dp G4 500 with Mac OS 10.2.8. Suddenly my iPod won't appear on the desktop or in iTunes when I plug it into the dock. I've tried different FW ports, etc. and nothing happens.
I ran the iPod Updater 2006-01-10 (v. 2.1 I assume) and it said my iPod was connected and was waiting for it to be recognized. Then it just hangs and nothing ever happens.
I can't even get an option to Restore the iPod let alone Update it. I've followed the instructions on resetting the iPod as well but nada.
Would iTunes 6.0.4 have anything to do with it? I just installed it and it may be the cause. Does anyone know where I can find iTunes 6.0.3 installer? It's not on Apple's site or VersionTracker.com.

UPDATE: I brought my iPod to an Apple retailer yesterday and they were able to get it to mount on a Mac there using the Dock Connector to USB 2.0 cable. They let me borrow it to try it at home and it worked! The iPod mounted on the desktop and in iTunes with no problems.
I even tried plugging the iPod into the FW Dock afterward and it's working again like there wasn't ever any problem. Somehow just getting it to mount seems to have fixed the problem so hopefully this info will be of some use to someone else.

  • IPod won't mount on new Mac Pro

I just got a new Mac Pro that came with Snow Leopard. After getting everything setup I plugged in my iPod shuffle and it won't mount when plugged into either of the 2 front USB ports or any of the 3 back USB ports. When I plug it into the USB port on the keyboard it mounts and I can sync it through iTunes. When plugged into the front two ports the green charging light comes on, but it doesn't mount. The back 3 ports just cause the iPod to blink the green charging light quickly, it isn't a solid green.
I don't know if this is a Snow Leopard problem or the Mac Pro. The iPod was working perfectly with my G5 running Leopard.
    Any ideas?
    david.

I just don't get computers sometimes (even after being a software developer for over 25 years).
I had restarted the computer multiple times while installing other software but the iPod would not mount.
I took your suggestion to try another USB device and the only other device I had was a Canon scanner. I installed the drivers which required another restart. And the scanner worked and now the iPod works on all of the USB ports. It is mounted in iTunes and I can sync it on any port.
I checked the console logs files and didn't find anything unusual before it didn't work and nothing different now that the iPod mounts.
    David.
