Ipod won't recognise, sync, or charge!

the other day, i realised my ipod was flat out of battery, so i plugged it into my computer and then left it, assuming that it would charge.. like usual! so i checked up on it 5 minutes later.. and to my horror, the ipod had heated up, it wasnt on, nor was it charging! so i immediately unplugged it. hours later i decided to charge it with the wall charger. it charged perfectly, so today i tried to sync it, but unfortunately, it wasnt syncing, charging, let alone windows recognising my ipod. i tried with 3 different cables, nothing was coming up! i even tried connecting another ipod to the pc, the other ipod worked, however my one still wasnt being recognised!
i have tried using the menu + select button method, and the putting to hard disk method. nothing has been working so far
please help! i really want this ipod to update with my songs!
any help would be greatly appreciated! thank you!

I hope this topic will help you

My mini ipod won't switch on or charge. I have tried charging it several ways - via the pc, plug and incar charger but no luck. The pc does not recognise the ipod. I have tried toggling the hold switch. The usb ports on the pc are ok.
The last thing that I did with the ipod was detached from the pc when it had the message to do not disconnect.
    Can anyone help
    thanks

  • IPod not recognized (for sync OR charging) after OS 4 upgrade

I upgraded to OS4 on Saturday July 10th with no problems. On Sunday (July 11) I used my iPod quite a bit. I was at a friend's house and the battery was getting low so he charged it through his computer. It charged completely and we continued using it the rest of the day. I plugged it in to my PC to charge it Sunday night and it was not recognized at all (for charging OR for syncing) through any of the USB hubs. I asked my friend the method he used to charge it that day and he confirmed it was via computer. Monday night I tried charging it through a friend's iMac. It charged halfway, though it still wasn't recognized. Tuesday morning I tried to charge it on the same computer and I got the "too much power drawn from the USB hub - HUB deactivated" message on ANY of the HUBs. It still doesn't work on my own home computer (though it HAD been working Friday night and Saturday morning pre-OS4 installation).
I'm personally running Ubuntu 10.04 but obviously only was able to charge the iPod on that system. Anytime I want to sync or download music I restart to Windows Vista (and iTunes).
I do also have apps installed, but nothing new from the previous OS - (I know that blaming third party apps is a common cop-out answer for apple techs).
I hope this wasn't too confusing. My real problem is simply described by my subject line: iPod not recognized (for sync OR charging) after OS 4 upgrade. What follows is simply everything I've done to troubleshoot. The only thing I haven't tried is restore...because my iPod isn't even recognized by iTunes.
I would greatly appreciate any help or stories related stories/situations. Strength (and hopefully solutions) in numbers!
    Best,
    Dan

Assuming you haven't got the cords mixed up with another, older iPod, it sounds like you have a couple of problems:
    1. Your computer's USB ports have quit working. Reboot your computer and see if they reactivate.
    2. Your friend's iMac generated that message because you tried to charge the device from the low power keyboard USB port. iPods need to be charged off one of the main USB ports or a powered hub.
    3. iPods not being recognized by iTunes can be caused by 1) wrong cable; 2) non-functioning USB ports; 3) iTunes not being the correct version for the iPod OS; and finally 4) Apple Mobile Device Services driver is either stopped, missing, or disabled.

  • IPod Touch won't connect, sync, OR charge

Lately I've been having serious problems connecting my Ipod to iTunes. It never shows up in iTunes when I plug it in, and it won't sync or charge (sometimes it does charge, but at a fraction of the speed that it normally charges). Last night I got it to sync by restarting my computer AND iTunes but of course I don't want to have to do that every time I need to sync it. Any suggestions?

We have effectively the same problem: My wife's MacBook USB ports have been acting up recently and it was after I installed a Logitech wireless mouse that needed one of the USB ports for the receiver. Now when she plugs in her iTouch it is not "seen" by iTunes unless I reboot the MacBook with the iTouch connected. I have since removed the Logitech mouse and I think I have properly expunged all traces of the Logitech software but it still seems to be problematic. Is there a way to "reset" the USB ports? Please note she is running 10.4.11.
    Any thoughts?

  • IPod can no longer sync or charge, bad pin connectors?

I've got an iPod touch thats a year old now that suddenly no longer will charge/sync to anything. I'm thinking maybe the pins are bad?
I've had difficulty inserting chargers into it since I got it, I've been careful to not handle it too roughly but it does take a strong push to get the charger in there. Of all the ipods I've had (and i had the first gen iPod touch before this too) over the years, never had that problem.
Before I get a bunch of "just reset it" kinds of replies, it is functioning properly other then that. Last night I did have it hooked up and synced to my Mac so it fully charged, but just now I went to connect it and now it refuses to connect at all. I've tried 2 cords, and with the same cords I plugged my iPhone in as well and it all worked fine, so it's definitely not my other hardware. iPod software is also up to date as well.
I haven't had a real issue of it not syncing with my computer before today, but in the past month it's had issues staying properly synced to my car radio (play it through USB). It would sometimes drop off or glitch up and not want to work correctly, though in the past week it started working more normally again.
I listen to my ipod as much as humanly possibly, so I'm wondering if this something I can take to the Apple Store and see if its fixable or replaceable. I've been looking for a great excuse to get the new red ipod touch but I've been unemployed since August.. Of course it has to break before I get a new job
Has anyone else had the issue of having difficulty getting the sync cords into their ipod touches/problems where the pins just die?
EDIT: Nevermind. My imac suddenly wont sync my iphone either but I plugged the ipod into the iphone charger and it synced immediately. It's something on my computer's end.

*all the songs are there, but there are shown in light grey and not able to be high lighted.*
*I'm also not able to play from my ipod list, only from my itunes??*
Grey text when you look at the content and a lock symbol at the bottom of the screen just indicates that the iPod is set to sync automatically with iTunes. If you want to play the iPod songs through iTunes, delete songs from the iPod, drag songs from iTunes, add playlists to the iPod etc. you need to change the update setting to "manually manage songs and videos" as per the link above. The text will change from grey to black and everything will be directly accessible through iTunes
*I have seen a friend plug his ipod into some one elses computer and the same thing happened, it showed all the content but he was not able to access it, or modify it.*
Again that's most likely because the iPod was set to auto-sync with his home library. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer or with more than one library you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
*Before I backed up my itunes libary from my external hard drive, and itunes was empty, it would not allow itunes to be copyied from my ipod?*
iTunes will only give you the option to copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads etc) there are third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod.

  • IPod Touch will not sync or charge on PC

    Hi,
This is the first issue I've ever had with my iPod Touch and I've had it for over three years.
When I go to plug in my iPod Touch to the computer, the computer will beep at me saying that something is connected to the USB port but my iTunes won't pop up, and when I bring up iTunes, my iPod won't even show up on iTunes. It also will not charge when it's plugged into the computer. It charges when I plug it into my player in my bedroom, but not my computer.
Computer did a funny reset a while ago, and I'm wondering if this is an iPod issue or a PC issue.

  • IPod won't work off the charger

My 4th Gen iPod won't work when it's not connected to the charger.  As soon as you remove it from the power source it shuts down.  I have updated to the latest iOS and it's been restored.  This corrected the issue for about 24hrs then it was back to random shut down and now it won't work at all.
Suggestions or does it need to go visit an Apple Store ?

If you restored to factory settings/new iPod and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

  • HELP, my iPod won't turn on or charge, any suggestions?

I have an iPod mini and it recently would not turn on or charge, I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions.

    Try these.
    My iPod won't turn on.
    iPod battery doesn't charge.
    My iPod won't wake up.

  • IPod won't turn on or charge AT ALL

    My iPod:
    8 gb
    4th gen (w/ camera)
    NOT jailbroken
    One year old
I bought it last September (2010) and my warranty just expired. Seriously, two weeks after the warranty ended, my iPod failed to turn on one RANDOM day at a very RANDOM moment.
I own four iPod chargers (USB and Wall) and none of them charged my iPod. All four plugs work because I have an old classic iPod and all plugs charge it fine. When I plugged it in, nothing on the screen showed up. I tried letting it charge for two days, and it never turned on. I held down the Power and Home button together and for the first couple of times, it showed the red battery w/ the "need to charge" sign underneath. However, after holding down both buttons a few times, the iPod won't even budge at all.
It's the black screen of death. PLEASE HELP ME!!
    What doesn't work for me:
    won't charge at all
    plugs aren't the problem
holding down the home button (and the power button together) doesn't work -- no apple appears, nothing! even after holding it for 1 minute
doesn't even turn on -- nothing shows up on the screen!!!

    - After being connecting to a charging source for one hour, try resetting the iPod.
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
-Then connect to your computer. If iTunes sees the iPod restore via iTunes.
    - Next see if placing the iPod in recovery mode will allow you to restore the iPod. For recovery mode see:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
    - Last, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since you likely have a hardware problem.

  • Ipod touch 4 wont sync or charge

Please help!!!! My ipod touch 4 gen is 1 year and 2 months old. When i connect it to the wall charger the charging icon will not apper. If i plug it into the computer it says that its an unknown device and needs a driver, it will not sync or charge. If i shut it off and plug it in it will turn on (usaully that means its charging) but then the icon wont apper.I've tryed it on different computers and bought a new cord and it didnt work. Then i put it in DFU mode and that didnt work. So then i erased everything because i know that worked before and that didnt work either. So then i uninstalled and reinstalled itunes which didnt work either. Then i tryed a different charger and then that didnt work.My friend plugged his ipod touch 4 gen into my computer with the same cord i was using and his worked perfectly fine. Like i said my ipod is over a year old and i cannot afford to get it fixed nor go to the apple store because its an hour away. Im not going there just to be told theres nothing they can do and i have to pay for some nonsense. If anyone can help i would deeply apperciate it!
PS im using windows one is xp and one is windows 7

Based on the troubleshooting you performed, it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Change iPhone to iPod:  won't restore/sync

I have an iPhone 3G that no longer has phone service, but otherwise worked perfectly fine.  Took it to AT&T store and they wiped it clean and told me to Restore and then sync.
I have restored 3 times, but the iPhone continues to show only an arrow indicating "connect to iTunes."
My older son has an iPod & am able to sync or do whatever to that device.  Attempting to turn older iPhone into an iPod for younger son.
Unfortunately, not being prompted to sync when connected to iTunes.  ANY HELP out there, I'm desperate!!!

  • Ipod won't fully sync after latest update!

I have the most recent ipod and itunes update but it erased EVERYTHING off my ipod and didn't restore it. I lost over 3000 songs that now will not sync. It's backed up on itunes but now it's only syncing 200 of the 3000 songs. Majority of my music was imported from cds to the library and I don't have the cds anymore but, like i said, its on itunes. They play fine on itunes but how do I get it on to my ipod now??

same here i downloaded itunes 11 last night and this morning i get an "error -42408" so altough my itunes recognizes my ipod, it simply wont sync and asks me to eject manually. I tried restoring and it still wont sync.

  • Ipod problem? it syncs,,.. charges.. updates.. but i cant scrolll anything.

ok.. so i have an ipod video
when i plug it in.. it syncs and my computer picks it up.. and the battery charges. but the thing is.. the screen is frozen and it won't move at all.. but thats not all... when i restored it then the graphics on the lcd changed accordingly.. so i thought it was unfrozen and i was happy.. yet when i tried the clickwheel.. nothing happened.. the hold button works for some reason.. screen turns dark and all.. it seems that everythign works except for the clickwheel and button
Do i need a new logic board?!
    or is this fixable?

It may be the logic board, or the click wheel mechanism (which is separate from the logic board).

  • Fairly new iPod Touch will not sync or charge sometimes

This has been a problem since the day after I received my iPod from Apple.  Sometimes, when I connect my iPod touch (newest generation, 32GB) to a charging outlet, be it either connected to a computer or the wall, I get the "Charging is not supported with this accessory" error.  I've tried it on different cables and the problem persists. Additionally, oftentimes after receiving this error, if I unhook the iPod and then hook it back up again, it fails to recognize the connection at all (neither the computer nor the iPod respond in any way; the iPod doesn't charge or sync, and the computer doesn't notice that it has been plugged in).
I took it to the Geniuses a few days after this happened for the first time.  They inspected the pins on the connector and decided there was no damage to them.  Eventually, they manually closed all of my apps and performed a hard restart and it would connect properly (the guy was even able to plug and unplug it multiple times with it making a good connection every time).  It was decided that the apps had been the problem and I was sent home.  The problem started happening again the day after that and is pretty much a daily occurence, which is problematic because I generally charge my iPod when I get home from work (and thus only have a few hours each night to try and get it to connect succesfully).  Sometimes the hard reset seems to help, other times it is of no use.
I have tried connecting it to different computers (and, as mentioned above, the wall outlet).  I've tried different charging cables.  There doesn't seem to be any pattern to whether or not it's going to charge, and I don't always get the "Charging is not supported..." error either--occasionally it just refuses to react to being plugged in (and as far as I can tell isn't getting a charge without displaying that it is).  Oh, and it isn't jailbroken, or anything else of the sort... pretty much straight from the factory, with about a dozen apps installed from the app store.  And I checked the last time I could get it to connect to my computer: the software is up to date.
Any ideas on what the problem is and what I should do about it?

  • IPod Classic will not sync or charge

I have a 30 GB video iPod. I had it plugged into an adapter for a stereo and noticed that it would play music through the stereo but not charge. When I got home I tried plugging it into my computer and it wouldn't sync and still wouldn't charge. I then tried charging it using my JBL sound dock and haven't had any luck, although after one attempt I saw the battery go from the red almost drained to the green charging version for a split second, but then back to red and then dead. Any suggestions other than letting it sit for a day or so?

Are you sure that your iPod CLASSIC (160GB) is formatted as a MAC?
Just had similar and iPod CLASSIC is like a MINI HARDDRIVE.
Had to reformat it from Windows Fat32 to MACKINTOSH format.
Had no problem with battery icon though (so that is separate issue from my problem).
Late post but it was today's issue for me (Aug 6th)
