  • Third Gen ipod won't work or restore

My friend has an old ipod with the click wheel. I think it's third generation. He hasn't been able to turn it on, and when it is connected to the computer it isn't recognized in Itunes. A couple times, a message popped up that said it needed to be restored because it's corrupted, but we can't get the window to stay up to even restore it. We've also tried resetting it, but that won't work. The computers have the newest version of itunes. We've run diagnostics, but the ipod connection always fails. The ipod won't update or play music. An the apple icon appears, and then a folder icon pops up that says to go to support. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. He doesn't have Apple Care.

I am having the same problem.
So you're saying the problem is with the USB?
If I go to the Apple Store they will have this "USB/Firewire" cable.
    Thanks for your help!

  • 5th Generation iPod won't reset

    Hi guys,
I'd really appreciate it if you could help me out. I just bought a new iPod 5th Generation (30gb with video). For some reason, it froze and won't reset. I've tried to do what apple.com says (hold menu and play buttons), but it doesn't work. Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks a lot

Never mind. I was pressing the wrong buttons. Oh well, live and learn, right? Lol. Alright, so I'm good for now.

  • Ipod: Unable to reset or restore

My Ipod (click wheel) will not reset or restore. The apple logo appears on the Ipod screen, followed by the file with an exclamation point. I have tried to use Ipod updater without success. The Ipod does not register that it is charging either when plugged into the power adapter or the Mac using the USB cable. The Ipod is not recognized by Itunes either. After the latest attempt to reset and restore, the Ipod made whizzing noises like it was attempting to continuously restart. It finally stopped. The Ipod is more than a year old and out of warrantee. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I was having a similar problem with my Click Wheel iPod. It would reset when plugged into the wall, but would not restore. It kept causing both My Computer and Updater 11-27-2005 to crash. I assumed the problem was with iTunes 6, which I recently downloaded, but I took my iPod to a Mac Store anyway to see if they could do anything with it at the Genius Bar. The guy behind the bar was very helpful; he restored my iPod in about 2 minutes, I took it home, re-imported all my music, and it's been fine ever since.
My iPod is about 1.5 years old, and although I purchased the iPod AppleCare extended service plan, the Genius Bar guy didn't ask me anything about my iPod's warranty status. Didn't ask to see a receipt or anything. He just helped me out and sent me on my way. So I'd suggest taking your iPod in and seeing if they can restore it for you. You may find that being out of warranty isn't an obstacle. It's worth a shot.
    Hope this helps.

  • Ipod won't reset or be recognized after new software download

I connected my 160GB ipod and got a message to download new software for the ipod (Not itunes). I believe it was version 7.6.2, but not sure. I got an “OK to disconnect” message, and did so. Then my ipod went into reset mode and is stuck in this loop of just trying to reset. All I get is the apple icon over and over and over again. Tried to rest manually but get the same thing. The website said to let the battery run down completely and try again. I did this and nothing changed. The website also stated to download a new version of itunes. Did this, no change. My itunes won’t even open up when I plug my ipod into the computer. How do I get this fixed? Thanks.

Remove iTunes completely (incl. any Apple folder in D:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data)
    Restart your computer
Download it again and reinstall it.

  • Ipod won't reset/restore or play more than 10 seconds of songs

help! i just purchased a refurbished 20 gig ipod, it was great for the first two weeks then suddenly last week it started to move very slowly and would only play the first 10 seconds or so of each song. i could hear a clicking sound inside. then the next day it would only go from the apple logo to the folder/! icon. i tried to reset, could not,put it in disc mode and tried to restore but when I attach it to the computer, the computer starts to run realy slowly and if I am able to get the restore screen up it has either said "service error" or "cannot mount ipod". what should i do?
    dell   Windows XP

See these for the iPod service error.
    iPod service error.
Fast user switching in Windows XP is not supported.
For the "cannot mount error", if your iPod is recognized in "my computer", changing the drive letter can sometimes resolve this issue.
Click on control panel/admin tools/computer management/disk management/right click on the iPod to re-assign the drive letter.
Choose something lower down the alphabet, say 'M' or something similar.
The iPod can be confused by any other storage devices assigned a similar drive letter even though they may not connected at the same time.

  • IPod won't start after restore

When I got a new iPod touch 4G, I tried to restore it from a previous backup that I had on my computer. Unfortunately when the iPod was finished restoring, it wouldn't start up! All I got was the screen frozen at the Apple logo with an empty loading bar. I've tried everything from a hard reset, to moving the backup, but it just won't work. When it was synced to my computer (the only time it actually read the device without having to put it in recovery mode), it showed that it had all of the data on it on the summary page. However, the data was not broken up into music, apps, photos, videos, etc. It was only listed as other. I really don't want to lose my data, so I was wondering if there's any way to get the iPod to start with the backup still on it. I had restored to factory settings, and it worked fine, but I'd hate to lose two years worth of data. Neither the computer nor iTunes detected a corrupted file, and a computer system scan did not show anything either, so I'm not sure what the problem is. This has been going on for about a month, and any help would be truly appreciated.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

It is very ikely that there is no way to recover any data from the iPod

  • Ipod won't reset no disk mode

I had the folder icon show up and the unhappy ipod.... This is the second generation 10 gig ipod.. believe it or not it still holds a charge...
I can't reset or get to disk mode....
    any help would be great

Same as all the others. 4th gen 40GB iPod. running latest version of 10.4.2 on a G4 800 MHz 15" TiBook. Everything worked for months. Two Firewire HDs appear, when plugged directly or daisy chained. iPod does not appear when plugged anywhere, even when plugged directly into G4 after full restart. I have also used two different cables and two different docks (3rd gen iPod was lost, so have extras). Can't do a restore if won't appear. I have 36 GB on iPod, and everything works perfectly, including charging through the laptop, external HD, or AC charger. Charging readout is correct, unlike some other posts. Not sure when this happened, but I just recently wanted to delete/add new music.

  • IPod won't sync after restore - Please Help!!!

    Hello,
Thanks for taking the time to read my posting.
I have a 3rd Gen 40gb iPod which was running the 2.2 firmware on Windows XP, which has been fine up until recently. The songs started to randomly skip during playback; this went on for a few weeks. So I decided to restore/reformat the iPod using the iPod updater software and this is where the problem started.
I downloaded the most up to date updater from Apple and updated the firmware to version 2.3. However when I came to sync my iPod with iTunes (ver 6) it would start transferring tracks and get about 5 or 6 on there and then it would hang and not transfer anymore and my iPod would just say Do not disconnect. This happened about 3 or 4 times. I decided to restore the firmware on my iPod to 2.2 using an older updater and now iTunes won’t see / sync my iPod at all…
Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong or what I should do to sort the problem?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Windows PC   Windows XP

I would suggest that you go to firmware version 2.3 again (as opposed to 2.2), as this may be why iTunes isn't recognizing it now.
But, I understand that after you restored your iPod (with the 2.3 version), iTunes would bog up after updating only a few songs.
I think it's probably better to have 2.3 instead of 2.2. Try assigning your iPod a different drive letter when you connect it.
Log off of any other users on your computer.
Then, connect your iPod. When you connect your iPod, press and hold the "Ctrl" and "Shift" keys for about 20-30 seconds. This will prevent automatic-syncing from happening in iTunes.
After you've stopped automatic-update setting, assign your iPod a different drive letter (see below):
1 - Go to "START -> Control Panel -> Admin Tools (if you don't see this, click on "classic view" button on the left panel) -> Computer Management."
2 - Click on the "Disk Management" button in the left panel area.
3 - Right-click on your iPod's listing there (after a few moments when it gets recognized in this drive window), and click on "Change Drive letter and Paths". Then the "Change..." button.
Here's what it should look like:
Assign your iPod the letter "M" "N", "O" or the like (further along in the alphabet).
For more details, see this article:

If you need any additional help on how to follow these steps, post back with the details of your issue, and I'd be glad to try to help.

  • Ipod won't sync despite restore

Hi all.  I have an ipod classic that was purchased approx 3-4 years ago?  I've had some recent problems (i.e. won't recognize the ipod, some songs only play 1-2 sec before moving along to the next).  This most recent time, the ipod again was not recognized and recommended restoring the ipod to factory settings.  I have done this previously and the sync went forward with no issues.  However, this time (and now three times).....the ipod is restored and itunes goes through the motions of syncing (indicates that the entire music catalog is syncing).  When the sync is complete and I appropriately eject the ipod and there is no music on it, as if I had never synced it before. I have attempted this now three times, each time with the same outcome.  Out of ideas.  I have updated itunes, restarted my computer, ipod is up to date, used a different USB port, etc and nothing seems to be helping.  I don't want to have to purchase a new ipod but it looks as though this might be my only option.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!  Thanks in advance.

  • Help!! iPod won't connect or restore!!...

I have solved many problems over the years with my 160gb iPod Classic but I can’t seem to work this one out.
My iPod itself is fine.  It works properly, recharges fine, and I use it every day. However recentaly my Ipod Classic won’t connect to my PC via iTunes. When I connect it to iTunes it says “iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with ITunes. You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod”. It also doesn’t appear to be recognised by Windows (Vista), it shows an iPod icon in “My Computer” however I am unable to look at it or go in to the drive.
I have tried to restore the iPod, which seems to finish, however when the “restored” iPod connects to iTunes I get the same message as above in iTunes. And when I turn on my iPod, all the files that were on it still remain, despite the attempted restore.
So, how can I get it to connect to iTunes?!?!?  Any suggestions...?

Most likely your Hardisk is dying.
Do the iPod Disk Diagnostic as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but help in troubleshooting.

  • IPod won't sync after restore - now iTunes freezes up and iPod is empty

Two days ago my iPod started acting up - playing a song for about the first 10 seconds, then freezing up. I did the 5 R's - many, many resets, switching the USB port, reinstalling the software, and several restore attempts. The new and more pressing issue now is that, after a restore attempt, the iPod syncs to about song #50 (of about 1500) and then iTunes freezes up. Because of the restore, the iPod is now empty...no tunes...and I can't get it to sync. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I fear this is a glitch with the new update? What is the solution here?

I am having similar problems. My ipod was working perfectly fine in the morning and then at lunch time it said i needed to "connect to computer source and restore" i didnt have a computer at the time so i waited till i got home. when i got home i let it sit on my computer charging before i did anything. i took it off when it was fully charged and went to go listen to it. i listened to one song and in the middle of the second song, the music started to flicker and skip. i just shut off, when i turned it back on again ALL THE CONTENT ON MY IPOD HAD JUST DISSAPEARED. i was so angry and ive been calling around, reading the internet site pages and trying all that i can to fix this **** of a problem but nothing works. HELP ME PLEASE!!

  • IPod won't reset, in ARGENTINA, need HELP!

I have an iPod 20GB for Mac which I bought 13 months ago in August 2004. Currently, I am studying abroad in Argentina. The iPod worked fine until two weeks ago when suddenly, it started freezing in some songs, not playing songs of particular artists and instead skipping to the next song. I tried resetting it, which did not seem to fix the problem. Then, the iPod started fast-forwarding and skipping through every song on the Playlist I was listening to, without ever stopping. Yesterday, it froze permanently, so I reset it. I connected it to the computer and it made iTunes and the computer very slow, freezing and then unfreezing every minute. When I tried to completely erase and reset it, it got halfway through the process and said "The iPod drive does not have the right structure". Currently, I seem to have erased all my music on the iPod and it simply shows the "!" Folder icon.
I don't have the extended warranty, I'm in Argentina, and since I won't be back in the states until December, I'm trying to figure out if this iPod is a lost cause or if there is ANY WAY TO FIX IT.
If you can help me or give me advice, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Flip4Mac will take care of wmv content, but you'll get a watermark if you haven't spent the few bucks to license it. Others will refer you to Visual Hub as an option, but it costs too, and doesn't do as much as Flip4Mac, IMHO.
