Ipod won't show up in itunes, but there's a twist...

Okay, let's start from the beginning. My dad bought me an iPod for my birthday. But, since we're cheap, he got a refurbished one. It's an iPod (dock connector/3rd gen.) and it came with a split USB and Firewire cable. I plugged it in and everything was going fine at first. I ejected it after it had imported about a gig of music so that I could verify that it was working (I've had trouble with iPods in the past). I listened to it and everything was going just fine. So, I plugged it back in so that it could continue importing my music. Later, I moved the iPod and my computer informed me that I hadn't unplugged it properly. To which I shouted "But I didn't unplug it at all!" Neither my computer nor my iPod seemed to care what I thought. I frantically checked my iPod to make sure that it was still okay and, well, it wasn't. It will admit that there are 7 gigs taken up, but it doesn't recognize any actual songs. Thus begins my two-day battle with my formidable oponent: apple.com. I begin searching around, trying to find ways to fix this. I am told that I need to restore my iPod, so I click the link to discover how to do this. The article tells me to first download the latest version of iTunes. I comply. The next instruction tells me to plug in my iPod. I, being not entirely stupid, had borrowed my friend's iPod cord since I'd determined that that was the source of my problems. I plug in my iPod using this cord and after a bit, finder and my desktop tell me that my iPod is plugged in. ITunes tells me that it can't read what's on my iPod and I should restore it. I click okay and wait patiently for the iPod icon to appear in the source bar. It never does. I decide to restart my computer, hoping that this will work. It doesn't. I then resume my battle with apple.com. After some fruitless and frustrating searching (including an article that told me to restore my iPod in order to fix the problem...idiots), I find the post on this very message board where someone had the same problem that I'm having. In the responses I was given a link to an article. I followed this link and there I was told to download a Mac OS X update thingy. I downloaded this and updated (which took forever). And (surprise) nothing changed. After all of this, I decided that I would give this discussion a try. Please, help.
p.s. - I understand that this is very long, but I felt it best to give a detailed account of all those things that I have already tried. Besides, I'm witty and entertaining...right?
iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

I'm having the same problems. Suddenly, around the end of August, my 3rd generation iPod would charge but not mount via Firewire. It worked fine away from the computer but I could no longer load songs or edit my playlists. I tried all the "Rs" plus switching cables and ports. I plugged into 4 other macs- some with no other firewire devices plugged in.
I installed a version of Panther on one of my hard drives- no luck. I discovered that the iPod would mount with USB2.0 but that connection would not charge the battery AND the USB port rapidlly drains the battery. A full charge lasts a little less than 5 minutes and even less if the iPod is accessed.
I was able to re-install earlier updates with the USB2.0 connection. Still no luck.
I reformatted for both mac and windows- no luck.
All the while, I'm reading posts on this site with others experiencing the same problems. It makes me wonder if the last update did something strange to the way the mac communicates through firewire that "orphaned" the 3rd generation iPods.
If only I could use USB2.0 with out the battery rapidly draining I would be OK. I've posted a request to see if anyone has knowledge of a dual purpose USB2.0 cord that would "Y" into a power adapter. I haven't heard anything yet but I just posted it last night.
Anyways, I'll be checking for responses to your post, my post and many others to see if a solution presents itself.
I don't believe any of the suggestions are "stupid". I'm sure the vast majority of iPod users have newer models and we owners of older ones are kind of low on the radar. It is very frustrating, though. Especially, when its apparent that MANY others are suddenly having the same problem
Thanks!
Don't have time to spell check so I hope I don't sound stupid!

My iPod won't show up in iTunes, but it does in My Pc. And I want to say that is not an iTunes problen, cause I have an iPod nano, and it works perfect with iTunes and with windows. My iPod won't show up in any computer at all, so I have read all the articles here in Support, and none of them give me a solution. I need to restore my iPod but I can't cause doesn't appear in the source list in iTunes. Do I have to send it to Technical Support? Please Help Me someone, cause I've been posting messages for one week now, and I haven't got an answer!! Pleaseee!!

You can try putting it into disk mode to see if it makes it easier on iTunes to recognize it.
To put your iPod into disk mode:
    1) make sure your hold switch is OFF (NO ORANGE SHOWING)
    2) hold the menu button and the center button at the same time for about 6-10 seconds until you see an apple logo
    3) AS SOON AS you see the apple logo, release the two buttons and hold down center and play/pause
    4) If you've done this properly you should now see Disk Mode Ok To Disconnect with a checkmark (when connected to your computer you should see Do Not Disconnect with Disk Mode at the top)
After you have the iPod in disk mode...see if iTunes picks it up then.
    Keep me update.

  • My iPod Classic is seen by Windows but not by iTunes.  I have reset it, gone to disk mode and it won't show up in iTunes.  There appears to be music on it in a file called MUSICSAVE.  How can I get this to work with iTunes again?

My iPod Classic is seen by Windows but not by iTunes.  I have reset it, gone to disk mode and it won't show up in iTunes.  There appears to be music on it in a file called MUSICSAVE.  How can I get this to work with iTunes again?

    1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
    2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
    3. Check the USB cable
4 Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
    5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
    6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job
    7. Check for third-party software conflicts.

  • IPhone won't show up in itunes but does show up in iphoto (?)

So my iphone won't show up in itunes, but is recognized by iphoto.
I did recently sync the music on the phone with another itunes on a windows pc because I was getting on a flight and wanted to hear the show that I had just seen and downloaded. Could that be the issue?
I figured when I got home I would just re-sync it to my own itunes and it would just delete what I had already listened to but no such luck. It is not even recognized: itunes could not open iphone due to unkown error.
I've already used the troubleshooter, and have restarted etc. Any ideas?
    Any help is much appreciated.

  • IPod won't show up on itunes or mac, freezes, and doesn't play bought songs

Okay i have four issues with my iPod
    1. It won't show up on iTunes or on Mac desktop
    2. When i plug it into the USB port it freezes and say 'Do Not Disconnect'. It will not come out of this
    3. Every single song i have bought won't play on my iPod. They transfer fine, but when i click on a bought song it simply skips over it
    4. I authorized this computer but songs still need authorizing, and i have already authorized them
So we bought a new Mac and i plugged in my 30 GB video iPod for the first time. It showed up in iTunes then so i synced it to our new computer. Then i tried to listen to my bought songs and they simply wouldn't play. The iPod just skipped over them. I had one song out of three hundred or so that were bought actually play. Then i tried reauthorizing my new computer and getting rid of all the old computers that had been authorized. That didn't work, and the songs that actually needed to be authorized wouldn't be authorized even when i clicked on them.
So then i unplug and just listen to it as is for awhile but then i try plugging it in again and it just doesnt show up on my Mac desktop or iTunes. And the screen becomes frozen with the same message, 'Do Not Disconnect' I wait for a half an hour for it to show up and it never does. I have no choice to unplug it and then it is still frozen with that same message. Five hours pass, and it is still like that. It finally goes off and then it simply doesnt work. So i plug it in to my charger and its fine except the whole not playing bought songs business.
Please i beg if you have any answers to any of these problems HELP!!!!!

  • Ipod won't show up in iTunes

Okay, after searching through these forums, I've found a ton of possible solutions, but they do not seem to be working for me.
Yesterday I subscribed to several new Podcasts. I connected my 60GB ipod photo and it synced just fine and loaded my new podcasts. Later that day, I imported a few more songs and downloaded some more new podcasts. When I tried to connect my ipod again it won't show up in iTunes or on the desktop. Here's what I've tried so far:
5 r's several times. The only one I haven't done is the restore, since iTunes won't recognize the iPod, I can't restore the iPod software. I've tried to reset my iPod alot, both when it is connected to the powerbook and when it is unplugged.
Checked cable. I think the cable is ok, because when I plug my iPod into my powerbook the ipod charges fine, but won't load in iTunes. I don't have another cable to try though.
Attempted to put the iPod in disk mode, and still couldn't get the computer to recognize it at all.
I'm planning on taking it to the apple store to see if I can connect it to another apple computer, but thought I'd check here first. Thanks in advance.
EDIT: The ipod still charges and plays without any issues.

I have had the same issue. I tried an archive and install of Tiger. iTunes did not show the iPod at first. I left the iPod plugged in to the Mac, quit iTunes, then restarted iTunes. The iPod then showed up in the Source list.

  • My iPod touch won't show up in iTunes, but charges and shows up on different computers.

My iPod touch 5th gen last was synced with my iMac a couple weeks ago. Now when I plug it into iTunes, it won't show up. It's done this before and I've fixed it by updating iTunes, restarting the iPod/computer etc, but it seems I've tried everything. I've connected it to different USB ports, and it charges in all of them but doesn't show up. When I plug it in, Dropbox recognizes it and can get the pictures off, but iTunes won't work. I tried connecting the iPod to a different computer, and it showed up in iTunes just fine. I have the latest version of iTunes. I didn't restore my iPod from the other computer because if I can't get it to re-sync with this computer I'd rather not lose all my data. It seems I need to reinstall iTunes, but I don't know how- will it delete all my music that I already have on there?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I had this issue, I fixed it by going to:
Start > Control Panel > Devices and Printers
Then find the iPod, and Right Click > Properties > Hardware > Properties > Driver > Update Driver > Update Automatically
The driver had not been automatically installed, and windows found and installed the driver files for me. Took ~90 seconds, and then the iPod began it's sync process almost immediately after. Hope this helps anyone with the same issue! I'd try this before re-installing iTunes.

  • My 2nd Gen iPod Touch won't show up in iTunes but does appear in My Computer

When I connect my 2nd Generation iPod touch to my laptop it will not appear in iTunes. It does, however, appear in my Computer.
I have worked through all of the troubleshooting guides on the Apple Support section, and have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes twice.
This message appears every time I plug my iPod in, and frequently whilst it is still plugged in charging:
'MobileMe Service has stopped working.' This is a pop-up window produced by Windows, I know this is the 'service' that picks up an iPod's prescence but stopping and restarting the service does nothing. My iPod still won't show up.
Please help, I am willing to faff around a bit. Might it be a problem with Windows itself? If so, how would I go about fixing it?
    Thanks in advance,
P.S I have the latest version of iTunes, and the operating system of my iPod is 4.2.1.
My version of Windows Vista is 32-bit.

I have the same problem with my 2nd gen itouch.
I've tried other computer and my childrens iPods work on my computer so not a windows problem.  I've tried reinstalling iTunes and resetting itouch as per apple support pages but nothing, it doesn't even show on my computer. Any help greatly appreciated :-)

  • Ipod Nano 7 won't show in my itunes but will on other computers.

My ipod nano (7th gen) was working fine on my Lenovo (windows 7) laptop for 3 weeks. Then yesterday, itunes told me I needed to restore my ipod which I did.
Since then it will not show in my itunes. The Apple store couldn't figure it out. The device is recognized when plugged into my computer by everything else except itunes. After running itunes diagnostics, the device and software is not recognized and will not sync.
When I plug it into any other computer their itunes automatically recognizes the device. I have re-installed itunes twice as well as trying different USB ports and it makes no difference. The only time the device is recognized in my itunes is after I plug it into another computer, but only then it will tell me I need to restore the factory settings.
I have searched through these forums and tried a few things but no luck. Any suggestions?
