Ipod won't sync and freezes when connected to computer

I can no longer sync my ipod. When I connect it to my computer my ipod freezes. It remains frozen for 4-5 hours after disconnected from my computer. It eventually just unfreezes by itself.
I think it is a virus or something but my virus scan shows nothing.
any ideas?

  • IPod won't sync and freezes iTunes

I am no novice user. I have an iPod Classic 120 GB. I had my iPod in disc mode and updated 1 song and shutdown the computer without ejecting the iPod first. Now all the songs disappeared. I tried to reconnect the iPod but everytime I plug it in iTunes freezes. It will sync a few hundred songs and then just stick on one for hours. I have 41 on there right now.
I've tried reformatting in Windows, but it fails. I tried doing Quick Format and that works. Every time I open iTunes it says you need to restore your iPod. So I restore it and it says everything is fine. It tries to sync the iPod and freezes again. I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. I've checked "sync only checked songs" and selected about 150 to do. I've reset the iPod multiple times (by holding center button and Menu). Nothing works.
I've searched the Internet for the passed 2 days looking over every topic I can find. I need help.

Here's a little update. I had tried a quick format again. iTunes restored the iPod and I had the options to manually manage music. I dragged about 100 songs at a time to the iPod and it sent them. I ejected the iPod after the first couple hundred and they were there. I plugged it back into iTunes and did about 300 more. I had a total of 500 songs. I finished syncing and didn't freeze. I ejected the iPod no problem. After it said OK to disconnect I look through the songs and it says 0 songs. Now it's freezing up iTunes again. >:(

  • IPod won't appear in iTunes when connected to computer

Hey, I've tried 2 different connectors but it's not registering at all. At first the computer registered it but acted like it was a digital camera or some other device and would let me into folders but wouldn't open it in iTunes, and now I'm getting nothing from it - any thoughts?! Thanks

  • IPod Classic 80 GB Freezes when connecting to Computer

    Hi.
My iPod Classic 80 GB Freezes when connecting to my computer (Vista... yes... I know). I've got my iPod for over a year now and I've never had real trouble with it.
When I plug it in (iTunes already running) my computer gives me the 'thumbthumb' noise because an USB thingamajib is connected to the computer. At this moment my iPod freezes and stays on. iTunes doesn't seem to find my pod. When I disconnect my iPod, it'll stay on (doesn't go energy safe mode) and stays frozen until the battery is empty. But by then, I've already lost my playing info (Which I really value).
    Pllllllease help me out her.

Someone has finally found a solution to this problem and i decided that i would spread the word around ... so here are the steps:
    1) Quit iTunes.
    2) Delete iTunes from your Applications folder.
    3) Go to your ~/Music/iTunes folder. Delete or rename the "iTunes Library" file.
    4) Open the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and look for the backup of your old pre-9 library; it should be dated at about the time you first ran iTunes 9. Copy it back out to the ~/Music/iTunes folder, and rename it to "iTunes Library".
    6) Go to <http://support.apple.com/downloads/iTunes8_21> and download iTunes 8.2.1. The page says it's for G3, but the Read Me file says it'll run on G4, G5, and Intel too. Open the diskimage and run the installer.
You should now be able to run iTunes 8.2.1 again.
And your iTunes will restore to before you upgraded and you won't lose anything.
*If you download the iTunes file from the "support.apple" link, and you can't open it, go to http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/06/28/apple-itunes-8-2-and-quicktime-7-6-2-di rect-download-links/ and download "iTunes 8.2 for Windows: iTunesSetup.exe

  • IPod Won't Power Up, Even When Connected to Mac

I'm trying to figure out if there's any chance this could just be the battery, or a more catastrophic failure (harddrive, etc.). The iPod will not power up, even when connected to the Mac, and will not mount as a removable drive either.
I've been having trouble with the battery for some time now (it will only hold a charge for about an hour, two tops) but I would think that even if the battery failed outright it would still work when plugged in (either to the wall, or to the Mac).
Does anyone know for certain if that is the case? I'd hate to waste any money sending this off to ipodresq.com for a battery if it's something more serious. (And this one is so old, if it is a harddrive failure or anything like that I'd be better served to buy a new one.
    G4 933 (Quicksilver)   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Thanks for those links; I performed a hard reset and that seems to have brought the iPod back to life, at least for now. I suspect that the battery is no longer holding any significant charge and needs to be replaced, which might be why it locked up in the first place.
So now I get to decide if this 1st gen iPod is worth the money to replace the battery, or if I should just finally buy a new one. (I definitely do not want one of those rumored touchscreen models, though, if they turn out to be reality... impossible to navigate by touch alone while driving, and I have no use for video on an iPod - I want to watch video BIGGER, not smaller!)
    Thanks again!

  • IPod Won't Sync After Moving Music to New Computer

With the help of someone here, I moved my iTunes Library from my old computer to my new one. It didn't work exactly like it was supposed to. All of my music is on my new computer and in my iTunes library, but my playlists, counts etc. are gone. Whatever - I'll deal. Now, though, my iPod won't sync with my new computer (which I did authorized). The "Do Not Disconnect" sign never goes away after I connect my iPod. Thoughts?

*I'm afraid to plug in my iPod in fear of it erasing my playlists...*
If your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to a different iTunes. You'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7.3 or later installed hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
*but should I plug it in to restore playlists??*
Your playlists won't be restored by simply connecting your iPod to iTunes.

  • Ipod won't sync b/c Itunes says my computer isn't authorized but it is

I built a new computer but Itunes hasn't recognized my Ipod (seperate issue)so right now I'm syncing it to a netbook connected to the same external hard drive I use with my main new computer with my music on the drive. I have authorised the computer to my account but some files (mostly videos) still won't sync because itunes thinks that the computer isn't authorized even though it is. How can I fix this?

I had that problem myself just last week, and this is what Apple told me to do. It worked for me.
    Choose Start > Computer.
Choose Organize > Folder and Search Options.
    Click the View tab.
In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected.
    Click OK.
Navigate to the following location by either typing it into the address bar, copying and pasting it into the address bar, or clicking through the folder hierarchy listed:
    C:\Program Data\Apple Computer\iTunes
Right-click the SC Info folder shown and from the shortcut menu, choose Delete.
    Restart the computer.
    Open iTunes.
Authorize your computer to play your purchases.

  • Ipod freezes when connected to computer and cannot restore

When I connect my ipod to my computer itunes does not recognise it for a long time, when it does it says the ipod may be corrupted and to do a restore. So I click restore, and the warning message comes up about erasing the songs. I click yes then an error message comes up saying that the resource is not available. When I click eject, the ipod dissapears from the source list but the do no disconnect thing stays on the ipod screen and dosent even flash.
My ipod has not been recognized by itunes since the latest update, so I uninstalled the ipod driver and this problem has been happening since

If you look through the forum there appear to thousand of people who have this problem. Here's what we know so far:-
    1. The problem is related to iTunes v7 and the firmware v1.2 on later ipods.
    2. it is a bug in the firmware that gives any/all of the following symptoms
    - freezes after re-set
    - freezes during restore
    - cannot sync
    - cannot eject
    - cannot switch off
    - basically CANNOT USE IPOD AT ALL
    3. the problem appears to have been known to apple for at least a couple of weeks but they have not found a solution and for the time being they have also chosen to not even acknowledge the problem to re-assure users that their hardware is OK and a software fix is on the way.
    4. Contentious posts are being deleted by Apple (I have already had 2 removed so get this one while it's hot)
    keep the pressure up!!!
They will have to acknowledge it and fix it

  • Ipod Classic won't sync and freezes while trying

Originally i had a video on my ipod that wouldn't play, id get the puzzle piece screen so I figured id sync my ipod and delete the video and reenter it in my itunes. I plugged in my ipod and a message poped up saying error and that I would have to restore my ipod. I try restoring it, hoping that fix the problem, but when my ipod got to the second to last file syncing, my ipod started to click and it stopped syncing. My laptop still said syncing but the bar wouldn't increase but the ipod only said "connected" now. I tried this at least five times with similar results, the last try being the same as the one I just mentioned. Is there anything I can do to fix my ipod, could I have a bad sector on the HDD, or should I take it to the Apple store and have it assessed? I'm hoping to not have to buy another ipod so any help will be much appreciated.
    Thank you

Unfortunately a clicking sound on a iPod Classic, video or "brick" style appearance iPod is not a good thing... That clicking is usually the Hard Drive acting up and usually doing some very strange things.
I would do the following... Try using the restore option in iTunes if you can talk to it... If not you can TRY to reset it (at your own discression) and then try doing a restore and seeing how that goes.
If you can get it back up then try syncing the item... However if this is a single video, have you tried viewing it through iTunes? Do you know if it is good? As it sounds like it did something to the device, and the pause corrupted the index and thus the restore but now you sound like your in a worse state.
Additionally how big was the video file? I'm wondering if it was too large for some reason...

  • IPod won't sync and iTunes not accepting authorisation

    Hi
bit of a complicated story (to me anyway).  My computer recently crashed and had to be completely restored, when I got it back and reloaded iTunes (itunes 11) all of my music was still there in the cloud, excellent.  I bought two albums last night from the iTunes Store and they won't sync with my iPod classic.  When I plug it in iTunes recognises it, it connects then ejects without syncing.  When I tried transferring my purchases I get a message to say iTunes is not authorised to play certain songs (not the songs I have just bought) and I need to authorise my computer.  Then a box comes up with an apple ID I have never seen before pretty filled.  I deleted that andout my details in but then I get a message to say my computer is already registered.  I'm on my 4th out of 5 computers so I don't want to start deauthorising and deauthorising unless that's the right thing to do.
Tried resetting etc but doesn't have any effect.  Any ideas?
    THanks

Took the tick out of manually manage itunes and all is well.

  • Ipod not being recognized/freezing when connected to computer

    Hey all
My Photo Ipod has stopped syncing with my computer. When I plug it into the firewire cable it just freezes on whatever screen it is on and doesnt appear in Itunes, or under My Computer. I have tried resetting the Ipod while it is connected to the computer, it gets so far as the apple screen and then locks up and stays on that screen till I unplug it. I know the issue is not the dock connector, because it works just fine when I plug it into my FM Transmittor in the car. Any help would be appreciatted.
    Thanks

  • After updating to 8.1.2 my iPod won't sync and all artwork is missing

Has anyone else experienced this - updated to 8.1.2 this weekend, now iPod (5th gen) won't sync with iTunes on PC (skips straight to Step 4 without doing anything).  All my music artwork is now missing too?

Correct sync settings are verified. Not sure why I should need to back up and restore - it synced fine before the "upgrade" to 8.1.2. Obviously I can reset/restore when I have time to do so, and hopefully that might work, but why have Apple released an upgrade that made my device unfunctional?

  • 5th Gen IPOD - Won't Sync and Not Seen by Windows

    Help!!!
Tried the 5 R's. I have the IPOD in Disk Mode but whilst it will happily charge, it still is not seen by ITunes or Windows Explorer (though is visible inDisk Defragmenter). I have already un-installed and re-installed ITunes etc.
Prior to putting it into Disk Mode the IPOD still had my library on it and owuld happily work.

Have you had a chance to look at these troubleshooting pages? They may be of some help:

  • Ipod won't sync and some music disappeared from drives

I have about 2300 songs on my Ipod classic 30gb.
Recently I was asked to automatically update Ipod. At any rate, yesterday evening I noticed that there were a few exclamation marks on my playlist. It turns out that about 35 songs have suddenly disappeared off my hard drive. About 30 of them were all loaded around the same time (about 6 weeks ago), but not all the songs from that date were missing.
Now, when I go to sync, my Ipod will not sync with ITunes (I first tried because the deleted songs from my drive are still on the Ipod).
I am also seeing that my Ipod music is coming up greyed out. When I tried the diagnostic, I received what many have been writing about. A message that says "one or more sync tests failed."
Since I have the music on my computer, and own the music of the missing songs, I reset my Ipod and did a restore. The problem is NOT fixed. I will get the Ipod to sync when the music gets loaded back on, but then, never after that.
All the missing songs had been deleted from my Itunes playlist before doing the re-sync to make sure it was not a corruption issue.
Meanwhile, 2 other curious things. I have an older Ipod that does show up. But I also had a friend who brought her Ipod over about a month ago. We plugged it in and it was greyed out at the time. We couldn't access it on my computer. I didn't think anything of it at the time, but now I am concerned. But this was before I updated the software.
I will say that even before the update, I would get messages acting as if I did not have anything on my Ipod drive (it would say, no disk in Drive I, where the Ipod would be). This usually happened at the end of a session and I would
just hit continue or cancel and it would just go away. The bottom line was that it always synced for me. Now, after an alleged sync, it says it's syncing, but it doesn't really do it.
I have done extensive virus checking and my computer is not infected.
Numerous reports on not being able to sync have appeared on the internet and I have not seen 1 single solution, except for a fix on the IPod shuffle. This looks to be a potential ITunes update glitch.
My fear is buying a new IPod and having this thing happen again.
Essentially it ends the life of your IPod at the songs you already have stored on it. Unless I want to just keep restoring my Ipod every time I load music, which, to be honest, is ridiculous.
However, that is the only time this will sync.
Anybody know what I can do?

I just tried CopyTrans Doctor, based upon the suggestion on another thread.
I am glad it is a trial, because it said my IPod is fine. It is not fine.
Still trying to figure this one out.

  • IPod won't sync, and the contents have gone

Can't update my iPod - message is that it is because all of the playlists on my iPod no longer exist.
The songs, ratings, playlists, and so on are all safe in my library, but there is nothing left on my iPod and I can't load anything on it.
Why doesn't it sync so what is on my computer goes on to my iPod? Anyone met this issue before?

Sorted - it was only syncing playlists, so changing the setting cleared the problem. Breathes sigh of relief.
