IPod won't work?

My iPod touch won't charge or connect to itunes, when i turn it on it shows the apple logo then goes off again. I've charged it for hours and it still won't work, i also tried everything on the Support suggestions for a unresponsive iPod touch. Any suggestions?

first of all, this same thing happened to me after restoring from a jailbreak, and what had happened is i would plug it into my computer when itunes was already opened and did the following: : : : hold lock button for 2seconds while still holding the lock button; start holding down your home button until screen turns off.+almost exactly+ when it turns off, release the lock button and keep holding the home button untilyou see " the plug into itunes/DFU signal. now iTunes will say 'an ipod was detected in recovery mode and needs to be restored before it can be used with itunes" click restore. restore to your backup if you have one. good luck! - the iDevice dev team

    Any ideas?

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem that indicates a hadware problem, likely a bad battery. Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • IPod won't work off the charger

My 4th Gen iPod won't work when it's not connected to the charger.  As soon as you remove it from the power source it shuts down.  I have updated to the latest iOS and it's been restored.  This corrected the issue for about 24hrs then it was back to random shut down and now it won't work at all.
Suggestions or does it need to go visit an Apple Store ?

If you restored to factory settings/new iPod and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

    Any fixes?

I also had problems with iTunes 7 when it first came out, but 7.0.2 is working for me and seems to have fixed a lot of the problems. It's worth a try if you need iTunes 7 for your new iPod.

  • Third Gen ipod won't work or restore

My friend has an old ipod with the click wheel. I think it's third generation. He hasn't been able to turn it on, and when it is connected to the computer it isn't recognized in Itunes. A couple times, a message popped up that said it needed to be restored because it's corrupted, but we can't get the window to stay up to even restore it. We've also tried resetting it, but that won't work. The computers have the newest version of itunes. We've run diagnostics, but the ipod connection always fails. The ipod won't update or play music. An the apple icon appears, and then a folder icon pops up that says to go to support. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. He doesn't have Apple Care.

I am having the same problem.
So you're saying the problem is with the USB?
If I go to the Apple Store they will have this "USB/Firewire" cable.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Help! iPod won't work or connect to XP

Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. All the music was erased off my 5G 30GB iPod Video last week for some reason (interestingly, the photos were still there). When connected to iTunes, it gave me an error message about needing to "reinstall the iPod software."
Today, I got a new hard drive and installed XP Pro on it. I connected the iPod via USB and the little taskbar bubble popped up saying "Found new hardware -- iPod." Next, I installed the iPod + iTunes software from the CD, restarted the PC and run iTunes. My PC and iTunes didn't indicate that the iPod was connected, so I plugged the USB cable into another slot -- nothing. (I know it isn't the USB because I plugged in a thumb drive and it works fine). I've also tried to update/restore the iPod... but alas, I can't because it's not recognized.
What happened to the iPod is even stranger. After the hard drive was wiped, I was able to turn it on and off and view photos. Now, it only displays the white Apple logo with the black background. The backlight keeps switching on and off randomly, the iPod won't turn off, and the hard drive is making the same noise it does when you change a song, only every few seconds (I assume it's doing this because it keeps turning the backlight on and off constantly).
I've only been able to use the iPod one week out of the two weeks I've had it -- and I'm really disappointed about it. Will I have to send it back to Apple? (hopefully under the 30 or 90 day warranty, whichever I qualify for)
    Help is appreciated.

5G Video 30GB   Windows XP Pro

In order to restore it, it has to show up on the desktop, I think. It doesn't. I downloaded the software, and it's waiting for me to plug in the iPod (which is plugged in).
I actually have been reseting it every minute or so since I read your post. Before I restore it, the battery icon doesn't show any lightning bolt or motion. Then if I restore it, it appears to be charging for a short time. I was wondering if I was going to have to charge it in lots of short increments (I don't have the optional charger).
I dug out the manual from under the desk. And it says that if it is extremely low on power, I may need to leave it charging for 30 minutes before it is recognized. I think from a sentence in there: "Leave iPod mini connected until at least the battery icon animates." So, maybe it is actually charging when it appears to be unconnected and has no lightening bolt.
I've turned it off and left it plugged in and am waiting for a charging battery icon to appear. If that doesn't work, I will try leaving it on and plugged in (so far it just turns off when I do that). Again, any suggestions are welcome.

  • Computer restarted and now iPod won't work, please help!

I've been using my iPod shuffle since September, and there have been no problems, I updated it with the newest software and everything. Then today, I was changing the songs on it, and right in the middle of updating, my computer shut off and restarted. Now my iPod will not work, and iTunes won't restore it (it keeps saying an unknown error occurred (1415)). How can I get my iPod to start working again?

Follow the instructions in this article if you haven't already done so.

  • IPod won't work - Help!

I only just received my iPod Nano 4GB as a gift and it won't work. It works fine while plugged into my PC, and I can import music from iTunes to it, but as soon as I unplug it, the screen goes a bit fuzzy, freezes and slowly fades out - despite the fact that the iPod is fully charged. It won't allow me to reset it (via the toggle button/Menu/select either, and it won't respond when plugged into the mails either, only the computer.
Please help if you can! I've never used my iPod and I'll be really upset if it turns out to be broken - especially as I'm from the UK and all of the complimentary helplines I can find on the Apple website are for US only...

thats the type of thing they invented warrentys for!

  • 5th G iPod won't work when hooked up

My new iPod will charge on my laptop - it shows up on the desktop as well as in iTunes - but it won't work while it's charging from the computer.
I know the battery isn't completely down. Is there some setting I need to change so I can charge AND watch videos at the same time?
    Thanks

Click the eject symbol (underlined arrow) next to the iPod in the iTunes source list. The iPod should return to its main menu, but the battery meter should have a lightning bolt in it.

  • Dock for 3rd Gen. iPod Won't Work w/ 5th Gen. iPod?

I have a third generation (G3) iPod, which came with a docking station and an iPod-to-firewire cable. I also have a fifth generation (G5) iPod, which did not come with a docking station, but did come with an iPod-to-USB cable.
I can charge the G3 iPod using the dock and the firewire cable, but the G5 iPod won't charge using that same dock, nor will iTunes recognize the G5 iPod. Even if I plug the USB cable into the dock instead of the firewire one, it won't charge or get recognized.
Am I doing something wrong, do I need a different cable, or do I need to get one of the new docking stations? If the latter, will that docking station work with both my G3 and my G5 iPods?
    - Keith

Yes, the universal dock with work with the 3rd generation iPod--you can check the specs through the Apple Store's product description page. I also know that you can't charge the 5th Gen iPod using the 3rd Gen firewire cable + adapter (I asked about that at the Apple Store today).
What I'd like to know more about is why the 3rd Gen Dock isn't compatible with the 5th Gen iPod even if you use the USB connector. So this is "helpful" but I'm echoing your question about the dock: Why Dock 3 work with iPod 5?

  • New Computer (Windows 7)! Now iPod won't work

I had a Windows Vista computer and the hard drive died, so the computer won't work at all. Just bought a new Windows 7 computer.
I installed iTunes, no problem, but when I plugged in the iPod it didn't recognize it and also now the ipod is 'stuck' on one song. I cannot change it, shut it off, or go to main menu. I have tried everything, but the ipod is completely fozen. I checked hold at the top and that was not accidently moved over or anything.
Tried to plug it in my old computer, but it didn't budge. It wont turn off or anything. I cant even retore it because it doesnt show up on itunes.
What do I do? Please help!! Thank you!

I am having the exact same problem. Windows 7 Professional, ipod class 80G.
itunes and my ipod "freeze," or become unresponsive.
I have to unplug my ipod from my computer without ejecting it, which then remains frozen. I've restored it. The problem continues.
    Please help?

  • IPOD won't work if Drive C: is available on your computer

The Windows XP driver for the Apple IPOD USB Device has a bug that makes your system very slow or even hang when you try to connect or eject your IPOD if Drive "C:" is available on your machine. Another symptom is that when you connect your ipod, the computer doesn't automatically launch the ITunes app and it is very slow to open manually.
A typical problem is that if your system has had a hard drive replaced and/or the drive "C" is not assigned for some reason, then the IPOD USB Driver will attach itself as drive "C:" and then it won't work properly seemingly because of conflicts with the Windows OS. Other USB devices never grab drive "C:" but this Apple-supplied device driver appears to think it is OK to use drive C: but then it doesn't work properly.
The fix is to make sure some real (physical) drive is always connected to or mapped to drive "C:" so that the IPOD USB driver attaches to a drive from "D:" and up.

This was Terrific advice!!! Thank you for taking the time to post this. I have been beating my head against a wall for 2 days, and was going to return the iPod in the morning. Thanks to you, I assigned a back up drive drive letter C, and now, my iPod is working like a champ.

  • My 8GB iPod won't work after I clicked restore on iTunes?!

I clicked restore on itunes as my iPod had two/three lots of the same songs on it and i just wanted to wipe the memory and start again by putting all my albums on. Now it won't work as it says there was a problem with recovery and it's in safe mode and just keeps referring me to queries that are far too technical for me to understand.  How could this happen?

It states an unknown error occurred (1) and shows a tab saying, more information. But despite restarting both my mac and iPod.....it still won't work and just has an apple icon on the iPod......
