IPod wont restore or format?

Hi,
I have a 2nd gen ipod nano, in itunes it comes up as Capacity: N/A and tells me it needs to be restored. I do this and it fails to complete it and just loops over and over.
Upon plugging the ipod into the computer windows also tells me the drive needs to be formatted, but again fails to do that.
Is it just broken now or is something corrupt?

You need to reinstall the driver. Disconnect the iPod. Close everything. Right click My Computer, select manage, select device, select USBs, find the Apple Mobile driver, right click to uninstall it. It should disappear from the list. Close and restart the computer. Open iTunes then reconnect the iPod. It will ask you to start over - rename, etc. Do so. It should then automatically sychronize if you chose that. Or you should be able to do it manually. If not, or you already tried that, call Apple. I'm off to listen to my book.

    Hi missnaughty06,
Thanks for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It seems like your iPod can't be restored due to an "error 1" message, and you've found the article regarding resolving issues between iTunes and security software.
Be sure to follow the steps in that article to make sure that iTunes can communicate with your iPod. If you continue to see the error message, this article on restore errors suggests contacting Apple Support at this point:
    Related errors: 1, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 1000, 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, or 1669.
These errors mean that your device or computer may have a hardware issue that's preventing the update or restore from completing.
Check that your security software and settings aren't preventing your device from communicating with the Apple update server.
Then try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good.
Confirm that your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.
If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.

  • My ipod wont restore screen jus black

my ipod wont restore always different error everytime screen is jus blank

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

  • My 4th Gen iPod wont restore because of error 3194. PLEASE HELP?

It went into recovery mode, and so i plugged it into iTunes. However when I plug it up it says it needs to be restored, and it wont restore because of error 3194. Nothing I have read yet is helping.

Okay! I may have a solution for some of you! I have a 4th gen click wheel, and it was doing the whole restart thing over and over, but never getting past the apple logo.
You need to get to the diagnostic mode. To do this I had to hold down the select and rewind buttons at the same time. (for some models it's the sel/ff buttons or the ff/rw at the same time. The Apple logo will briefly appear backwards, and then you should hear a chime. My screen came up as:
    IRAMPASS
    PLAY TO CONTINUE
    (and some other junk)
    press play.
Another menu will come up, scroll through the menu (my Ipod I had to click ff to scroll through. There were 3 pages to scroll through. I got to disk mode on that menu and with the ipod connected to my computer, I started disk mode. Once disk mode started my computer recognized the ipod (finally) and I was able to restore from the computer.
I did lose all the music stored on it, but I'm happy to have made this progress, considering when I got this ipod from a friend two days ago, who was about to throw it in the garbage, it would not even turn on!
    Hope this post helps someone!

You need to install the adobe flash player plugin.  Download only from the adobe flash player plugin download page.  Mount the downloaded dmg and launch the installer.  Check the agree to terms to enable the install button and then click the install button.
Once installed, the next launch of your browser should allow you to play youtube videos and flash videos on other flash video sites.

  • Ipod wont restore or go into disc mode

My ipod wont turn on properly. when i try it displays the apple icon for a few seconds and then the folder/exclamation mark icon before turning itself off. I tried restoring the software but i get an error message saying 'can't mount ipod'. It wont go into disc mode either, i just get the apple icon. I think it needs professional help and i know it hasnt been a year since i bought it and it should still be under warranty but i cant find my receipt. any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks

I just updated itunes with my ipod connected.  When the update finished my computer didn't recognize the ipod and then itunes thought there were 2 ipods connected to my computer.  After I disconnected the iPod I tried to turn it on where I get the big red X and what sounds like hard drive crunching.  I've tried started in disc mode, but it won't.
And smacking the iPod on the table, is that really the way to get it to work???

  • Ipod wont restore plz help!!!

well after watching a few music videos on a road trip i turned off my ipod. Then the next day i turn it on and is says
"connect to your computer use itunes to restore"
so i do that and after it restores it says the same thing again and again and again it just keeps going through the same process i restore it then it says it has to be restored again? can someone plz help.

Some folks have had success from recovery mode loops by reformatting the iPod to FAT32, followed by a restore in iTunes, through Windows Explorer:
1 - Connect your iPod to your computer.
2 - When iTunes has finished syncing with your iPod, open "My Computer".
3 - Right-click on your iPod, and click on "Format". (If your iPod is not showing in My Computer, make sure that disk use isn’t enabled in iTunes).
4 - Here, verify that your formatting settings are "Default", with the format type set for FAT32. Also, make sure that "Quick Scan" is not selected.
5 - Then, click on "OK" to begin the formatting process.
6 - When this is complete (it might take a while), make sure to restore your iPod in iTunes again, so as to properly reload the firmware back onto it again.

  • My ipod wont restore

i have just downloaded the new software for my ipod touch and it has went into recovery mode, i have clicked on the restore button and then it came up with error 22, i then deleted my anti virus software as apple has said but it still wont restore, now it is coming up with error 21 and still wont restore and is still stuck in recovery mode. If anyone has had this problem and has sorted it can you please help me as I am about to go to the local apple store and give them a piece of my mind and demand my £225 back or throw the ipod out the window as it is now a useless piece of dung

Did you check your security software settings to provide contact to Apple during the restore process?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3125
If this does not work, try to delete the ipod software file located in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates to make iTunes download a new copy when you connect in recovery mode. Maybe the file stored on your PC is damaged.

  • Ipod wont restore it just keeps saying to restore again

i changed the password on my ipod touch 5 and i forgot it almost immediatley! It said connect to itunes after so many password attempts so i tried that! i had never actually synced before so it required a password to connect and obviously that didnt happen because the ipod was disabled...
i tried the advice on this site and set my ipod to restore mode, and itunes began to restore it, but every time it finished, the itunes store told me that it needed to be restored again! So it just kept going in this loop although nothing was actually happening! What should i do? Please i need an answer asap

    Did you already try this?

  • IPod wont restore

I'm having a lot of trouble with my new iPod Classic 160 GB. It suddenly stopped working properly and wouldn't sync with iTunes. I synchronized it, but all the music from my iPod disappeared. I reconnected it hoping syncing it again would fix the issue, but my iTunes said I had to restore my iPod before using it again. So I restored my iPod, and it restores it normally, but straight after it turns back on after restoring I get the same message from my iTunes. I keep getting error message 1429 after restoring. I managed to get my iPod restored once, but trying to sync it just borught the problem back.
I've tried everything I've found online to fix it - trying another USB port, reinstalling iTunes, starting iTunes in safe mode, even hitting the top right corner,  (it's supposedly worked for some people) - among other things.
Does anyone know what the issue might be?

    Hey there Penthe,
It sounds like you are getting error message 1429 after restoring your iPod. I recommend the other troubleshooting steps from the article named:
    iPod: Can't restore or update in iTunes with error 1415, 1417, 1418, 1428, 1429, 1430, 1436, or 1439
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1372
To troubleshoot the error, follow these steps:
Disconnect and reconnect your iPod to iTunes and restore or update the iPod.
Restart your computer and restore or update the iPod.
Connect your iPod to a different USB port (a USB 2.0 port if possible) and restore or update the iPod. For Windows computers, follow these steps to identify USB 2.0 ports.
Disconnect any third-party USB devices from your computer. You don't need to remove your keyboard or mouse. Then, restore or update the iPod.
Update iTunes and restore or update the iPod.
Use a different user account on your computer to restore or update the iPod. For example, create a new test user account on the computer with admin rights and iTunes and restore or update the iPod.
Turn off Disk Use on your iPod and restore or update the iPod.
Turn on Disk Use on your iPod and restore or update the iPod.
Reregister ".dll" files by using these steps under "Solution 1."
Update or reinstall your Windows USB drivers using these steps under "iPod only: Updating, or in some cases reinstalling, the drivers for your computer's USB interface may resolve this issue."
If you use third-party security software, you might need to update, disable, or uninstall your security software temporarily.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

    Sterling
