  • I have a iMac that wont start up after it sits for a short time

I have a iMac that wont start up after it sits for a short time. I changed out the hard drive and reinstalled Leopard. If I mess with it a little I can get it to start up usually by repairing the hard drive with another computer, one time I just held down the P-R-option and command keys and it worked. Once its on it will restart no problem but if it sits for and hour or so it will get stuck either in the grey screen or blue screen. I also pushed the smu button but didnt work. Please help? Thank you.

For this type of question, we need to know which iMac you have. This forum covers G3, G4, and G5 iMacs that have different hardware, and any recommendations are better handled if people know which you have. For starters, do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and look at teh processor type.
You also need to tell us the version of the Mac OS you have, also avaiabe from "About this Mac.
If the processor type says "Intel," you have a newer iMac that this forum covers and should report in the area for current iMacs here:

  • Ipod wont start but syncs normally

I have a problem that seemed to arrive about the same time as Apple updated iTunes to 5.0. My iPod Photo 60gb wont start up to play music anymore. It shows a picture signaling some error and the URL to Apples support site (apple.com/support/ipod) for a few seconds, then shuts of. Apples site gives no clues as to what's the matter though.
The strange thing is that the iPod seems to be working ok when connected to the Mac. It syncs normally and seems to be working as a harddisk.
I have tried a hard reset holding down those two buttons but this does not resolve the problem. I have also tried to download the latest software for the iPod from Apples website, but this won't install.
Does anyone know what to do?

Well... my iPod is not starting at all. even after the steps this tutorial told me to do. i was trying to pick a song on my iPod and then all of a sudden it froze for about 3 minutes and then shut off. and i havent been able to turn it on since. the battery was charged and not low. i tried toggling the hold button and hitting reset even while it was charging with the battery and still nothing. all i hear is the iPod going "vroooom beep" over and over. like its trying to start but cant. its been doing that for almost 12hrs and i dont know what else to do. please help.

  • Ipod wont start up

My 3G Ipod got disconnected while applying the latest update. Now It wont mount to my pc. When I plug in the Ipod the Apple symbol Appers for a few seconds, then a picture of the Ipod plug (the part that plugs into the bottom of the Ipod) appers on the Ipod screen, there is also and arrow pointing away from the plug. I'm guessing its telling me to plug it in, but it is pluged in!! The Ipod then turns off after 2seconds. When its pluged in a message pops up on my computer saying "USB Device Not Recognised".
I also have a Photo Ipod and it will mount to my computer no problem. I have tried all the USB ports but same thing keeps displaying on the Ipod! Resetting it doesn't fix it either.
3G   Windows XP   Ipod Photo works fine.

    Hello,
First try ] these five steps (known as the five Rs) and it would conquer most iPod issues.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
If does not work, please have a check of your iPod in diagnostic mode
    Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
    iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode. For further details on Diagnostic mode can be found at http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diagnosticmode/
Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.

  • Macbook Pro Wont Start Up After Update

    Hey All,
I was in the middle of installing the most recent update for OSX when my computer froze completely. I shut it off by holding down the power button. Now, when I start it up, right after the apple, it goes to a screen with some script in the upper left hand corner, and a box in the middle with a picture of the power button telling me I need to restart. I've restarted it several times and it just keeps going back to that screen.
I have booted it up from the install DVD and run disk repairs and verifications, as well as checking the system profiler and utility, and nothing seems worng. I've tried starting it up by choosing to start up from the folder and it still didnt work.
If you've got any ideas, let me know. All your advice is appreciated.
    Thanks!
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I meant to say that the system would have been made unstable after the semi-complete update (if it was in the middle of replacing a crucial system file).
An archive and install would replace all system files, so wouldn't hurt anything. You might have to reinstall any system-intrusive applications (Palm Hotsync springs to mind, if you have that) but it will certainly fix system corruption, if that is your issue.
After the reinstall, if you encounter a complete freeze again, then I would definitely be suspicious of hardware. Possibly the original RAM, but it could be somewhere else in the system, such as the logic board. In those cases, you would have to go back to Apple for repair. (Your Macbook Pro, that is, not you.)

  • Macbook pro wont start up after trying fsck -y (incorrect block count)

my 2 months macbook pro won't start up after numerous attempts and ive tried fsck -y and it says "incorrect block count for file system.log (it should be 184 instead of 108) help please

it just says start up disk full, its not full however it has at least 10Gb of space left.
Your HD is full!  How large is your HD?  You should never let your hard drive get to where you have only 10-15% of space left.  You need to do some serious housekeeping.  However, you need to get to your desktop to do that.
Can you safe boot?  Read the threads over in the "More Like This" column over here.----------->

  • XP wont start up after install in boot camp??? Wont format either?

Can anyone please help.... I am trying to use boot camp to install windows xp and i go through all the steps fine, i partition, and then start the install. It lets me select the partition and then it installs. It restarts then nothing. It wont start up in windows? I dont know what i am doing wrong please help i need this to work asap. Thanks in advance.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
sounds like you are the 'victim' of the newer XP install CDs which somehow don't give you the chance to reformat the destination partition during the XP install process.
The BootCamp Installation Guide clearly state that you have to reformat the WIndows partition from within the Windows installer.
frederic1943 has posted a workaround to this which can be found in here http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10179186
    Hope it helps

  • 4G iPod touch KEEPS CRASHING AFTER 6.1.3 UPDATE

Okay, so I live in an area with rural internet. Because of this I have only just downloaded the 6.1.3 iOS update this week for my 4G iPod touch. I have only just discovered how bad an idea that was.
Safari crashes every half-minute, the iPod is now INCREDIBLY slow, Twitter, YouTube and almost every app I have keeps crashing after a minute or so...
I have gone over all the 'fixes' that google has presented to me.
Clearing the multitasking bar doesn't change jack and I can't roll back my iPod to the backup on iTunes because I just got a new computer. And the first thing I did was move all my music over and SYNC THE IPOD AFTER IT HAD BEEN UPDATED.
So what am I supposed to do? My iPod is USELESS to me now as an internet-capable device OR music player, and no matter where I look the only help anyone can offer is "Apple doesn't support downgrading"???
So Apple updates the OS with a faulty patch and I have to deal with the failure?
Is there anyone who can actually HELP me? What do I do? Jailbreak the **** thing? I've never jailbroken anything before, but surely it can't render my iPod any more useless than it already is! It's not like the thing is covered under warranty anymore! (Really convinient, that...)
Can some please help me get my iPod WORKING again?! I paid $300 dollars for a music player with internet access, not a paperweight!
Either way, I'm officially done with Apple devices after this nonsense. I hear Galaxy Tabs actually work! Imagine!

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Eclipse IDE won't start anymore after most recent security update

    Hello everybody,
after today's security update the Eclipse IDE won't start anymore on my system, I just receive the following error message:
A Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or Java Development Kit (JDK) must be available in order to run Eclipse.
No Java virtual machine was found after searching the following locations: /Applications/eclipse/Eclipse.app/Contents/MacOS/jre/bin/
    java
    'java' in your current PATH
Java is installed and Eclipse ran smoothly until I upgraded. Other Java programs like Visual Paradigm still work without problems.
Does anybody have an idea what I can do about this? I have already tried repairing permissions, to no avail.
    Best regards,
    Björn
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I have narrowed down the problem even more:
Obviously system path variables are not set anymore on my system for UNIX processes that are started in background, whereas starting applications from terminal using the open command ('open Gimp.app' for instance) still works without any problems.
Any ideas where to change this behaviour?

  • What do i do if my ipod wont start up ?

Ipod touch 4th generation. Will not start up charge or connect to itunes. The device worked this morning and later when i came home the device would not charge or start up. I tried to plug into the computer but itunes would not recognize it. The device was bought 2 months ago.

Yay! That means you are still in warranty.  If you end up needing service, as long as there is no major physical damage and you havent gotten it wet, you should be squared away.
Here's some stuff to try and of course the last step is get service on the iPod, so I put a few links down there to help you.
    Source: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2771
Will not power on, or will not turn on unless connected to power
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Connect the iPod touch to an Apple USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 15 minutes, if the display turns on and…
The home screen appears, the device should be working. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen: . Then disconnect the device from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears even after the iPod touch has charged for at least 20 minutes: See the "iPod touch displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or low-battery image appears , continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPod touch did not turn on, reset it while connected to an Apple USB power adapter. If the display turns on, go to step 4.If the display remains black, go to the next step.
Restore the device. Connect it to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes it and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPod touch. If the device doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring it, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPod touch resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring it did not solve the issue, seek service.

  • My ipod wont start up and wont connect to itunes

My iPod Touch 4g was jailbroken at ios 5, then I wanted to un-jailbreak it and update to ios 6.1.3. So without connecting to iTunes I just tapped software update in settings and about halfway trought downloading it shut down and rebooted, 10 seconds into start up (my ipod usually takes just over a minute) it turns off and reboots, it cuts out and tries again, this repeats until the battery is dead. iTunes does not pick up my iPod with full or no battery. Please help ASAP, I have nothing to take it's place until I get an iPad 5 when it comes out. (I am in New Zealand)

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem
