Ipod writing incredibly slow once certain capacity reached(approx 35/160GB)

I'm having a problem with my ipod classic, 160 GB. This is the older one, just under a year old now.
after the drive is filled to about 35GB, I am unable to transfer songs via itunes. If I attempt to excede that amount it freezes, and the database gets messed up so that only the first artist shows under the music section of my ipod.
After noticing this problem always happened at the same capacity, I thought maybe a corrupt song was causing the problem as I attempted to sync my entire library. To help hone in on the cause of the problem, I decided to copy a number of large files in disk mode through windows explorer. Once it reaches 35 GB, the transfer speed grinds nearly to a halt. From full usb2 speed down to 504KB/sec.
The next thing I did was try to format the drive. Once it reaches the same point the formatting seems to freeze, but I suppose it could just be taking forever if it is also slowing down to 500KB/sec at that point.
At this point, I am inclined to believe it is a hardware issue. Frustratingly, it is still under warranty for a week, but I don't have the receipt, just the original box it came in.
Does anybody have any idea what the problem could be? What I could do to fix it? It's really killing me inside to see my beloved 160GB ipod reduced to this pitiful state.

  • IPOD sync incredibly slow

Hi - i hope someone has the answer to this - for some reason my ipod is taking an age to sync - about 5 mins per song! so it's been running for over 24 hours and still not done. I'm running vista ultimate with all the latest patches etc and version of itunes. When i plug the ipod in (same thing happens to my other 2 ipods) in vista scans them and always wants to fix them for corruption and adobe downloader always picks them up really quickly and scans at speeds you would expect of USB2. if i cancel out of the downloader and disk scan, itunes picks it up easily - knows how many tracks it needs to re sync and then starts syncing away.. but it takes an ages. Any offers of insight greatly appreciated. This is only a recent occurence.

It could have to do with your virus software. Check to see if it is set to scan all drives. If so, disable it for the iPod drive when it is attached. That will definately make a difference. The virus software is trying to scan each file that you are adding to the disk (iPod). That is how Windows, and the virus software see the iPod.
    Hope this helps.

  • Incredibly slow MacBook, Internal Hard Drive issues...

Good morning everybody! I'm apologize if this post is extremely wordy...
I am extremely baffled by a particular issue with a MacBook 2.0GHz C2D which belongs to a friend of mine. The warranty is expired.
    _Brief history:_
Several months ago, this MacBook could not find a bootable volume. The drive would not mount when booting from an external FireWire hard drive. It would not mount when the MacBook was put in Target Disk Mode and connected to another Mac. When booting from an external USB hard drive or with my MacBook Pro connected to the MacBook via Target Disk Mode, the MacBook booted up quickly. I came to the conclusion that the internal hard drive must have failed and needed to be replaced. Ultimately, the data was not recoverable from this drive.
I then proceeded to swap out the defective Apple OEM Seagate hard drive with a known working Apple OEM Fujitsu hard drive. When booting from the Leopard Install DVD, the MacBook would boot incredibly slow, but would finally reach the Installer Language screen. When proceeding to install Leopard, the drive would take a very long time to have data written to it, and ultimately the install failed. I removed the new hard drive from the MacBook and placed it in an external USB enclosure, attached it to the MacBook and booted from the Leopard Install DVD. Leopard would install successfully. I removed the hard drive from the enclosure and reinstalled it the MacBook. When booting from the freshly installed OS, the MacBook would take a very long time to boot. The MacBook is extremely slow!!!
I checked the Activity Monitor to ensure CPU & System Memory Usage was not going crazy. All Processes where normal with adequate CPU & Memory headroom.
I took the MacBook apart thinking that the SATA Controller Cable might be loose. No, it was firmly in place. I reassembled the MacBook and booted it up again. Still incredibly slow!
Finally, after several reboot attempts, the MacBook would book up quickly and operation was perfect. I applied all updates and continued testing the MacBook with great success. Gave my friend his MacBook back and he was grateful.
    _Now for the kicker..._
My friend brought me his MacBook a week ago complaining that the MacBook was operating extremely slow (much like when I was initially testing it before). I verified the MacBook was slow when I tried using it. I tried several reboots and then it would get stuck on the gray Apple with spinning gear.
I tried booting into Single User Mode, but it gets stuck on "Waiting for root device"
I put the MacBook in Target Disk Mode and connected it to my G5 2.0GHz Dual Core. The hard drive would mount quickly on the G5 and I used Disk Utility to create a Restore Image. The disk operation would perform normally and the image would be created successfully.
I then partitioned the MacBook's hard drive when connected to the G5, ejected and proceeded to attempt OS reinstall. No dice! The hard drive is not even detected by the Disk Utility on the Leopard Install DVD.
Finally after several reattempts, the hard drive is recognized, but is extremely slow when trying to reinstall...and again, ultimately install fails. Using Disk Utility from Leopard Install DVD, the hard drive fails to unmount when I try formatting.
I don't have Apple Hardware Test disc for the MacBook or Apple Service Diagnostics disc for this model. Running TechTool Pro shows hardware to be okay, disk controller onboard the Fujitsu drive is okay, but running SMART & Surface Scan takes a long, long time (which I'm certain will ultimately error out). Running Drive Genius takes a long, long time as well.
    Conclusion:
I think the SATA Controller Cable is defective. I can't think of anything else that would cause disk errors or performance issues like this. Your input is truly appreciated!

Even though no one responded to my post, I thought I'd share the resolution with the entire Apple community. I hope this information will be helpful to some of you with MacBooks or MacBook Pros that may be running painfully slow or may be exhibiting hard drive issues because your machine won't recognize the boot drive or fails to properly boot on a perfectly healthy S.M.A.R.T. verified hard drive. It just might be the hard drive connector/cable. Here it goes...
I visited my local Apple Retail Store and asked a "Genius" at the Genius Bar about this issue and told him my thoughts about a possible failed hard drive connector/cable. First, he didn't even know what a hard drive connector was! Then, he arrogantly stated that he never heard of such a thing and that these cables never fail. Finally, he blatantly dispelled this as a possibility.
On the contrary with my experience, I have had many failed PATA controller cables that required replacement when supporting the desktop PC's at work. I have personally owned and supported many Apple manufactured laptops and desktops and have never encountered this issue on a Mac...until this MacBook!
So, after looking at the Service Manual for the MacBook, I went over to my local Apple Authorized Service Provider and purchased the Hard Drive Connector Apple Part #922-7579. I replaced the original cable, reassembled and proceeded to boot the MacBook with the Leopard DVD installer. The Fujitsu drive was immediately recognized and was able to be formatted and Leopard installed without incident. The MacBook boots off the internal hard drive as normal again and works nice and fast again.
Thank you all for your time!
    :D

  • ITunes slow once iPod is connected to computer

I just got an 80g video iPod for Christmas. I downloaded the latest version of iTunes and transferred all of the music from my library into iTunes. No problem. I connected my iPod, and it synced. Also no problem.
However, once the machines synced, iTunes became incredibly slow. When my iPod is not connected, iTunes works fine. But as soon as the iPod is connected, it operates horribly. Even when I try to "safely disconnect my iPod," iTunes does not respond. I have reset my iPod, restarted my computer, reinstalled iTunes, etc. What can I do to make iTunes function appropriately?

    so does mine

  • Firefox works incredibly slow (as in the window is barely functionable, not anything related to bandwitdh speed) when I'm running certain games on my computer.

    Hello,
During the past month i have had a strange problem with my Firefox browser in certain situations. The issue is only apparent when running certain 3D games (Most frequently when I run Diablo III). Whenever these games are loaded my Firefox browser will work incredibly slow. This is not an issue of a bandwitdh problem or such, the loading speed is fine, but the actual mouse clicks, bookmark clicks, keyboard inputs etc. take several seconds to register.
I have tried running Firefox in failsafe-mode which immediately made the problem go away. However, whenever I run it in regular mode the problem will be back even if I disable every single addon and plugin. I have also tried reinstalling both firefox as well as my addons and flash player, the issue stays.
For what it's worth, any other browser I have installed does not experience the problem at all (despite having the same few addons installed - I only have 3 of them).
Does anyone have a clue what the issue might be? Does the failsafe-mode inactivate anything besides the addons and plugins listed in the addon-section?
    Thanks in advance

  • 2.2 is slower - for certain types of processing

So far the only major complaint I have with 2.2 is that it's slower for certain things. Scrolling through pictures in the camera app is slower. With 2.1 the pictures would show up immediately even when scrolling through them very fast. Also the grid view would load much faster, now i see a blank gray picture for 3-5 seconds before the actual photo loads. Scrolling through my contact list and app list is slower and choppy. Before it was fast and smooth.
Has anyone else noticed these types of issues? Could the amount of processes running in the background cause the "jitter"  during processor intensive usage? With 2.1 I had the bare minimum running in background - maybe 2 - 4 processes and never had any issues. Now, I've disabled ATK - which seemed to help battery life, because of the wonderful programs that auto-restart themselves (such as Amazon MP3, footprints, skype, VZ Navigator, FM Radio, etc...), and have 10-20 processes at most times.

I believe that the froyo sluggishness, of the browser (pgup/down while the browser is still loading images), image viewer, and contacts, is due to the new "keep everything running in memory, and we'll sort it all out (by consuming more cpu) when the resources get low and froyo has to start killing/swapping apps to make room for the current app you are using" theory.;-)
actually it requires less CPU power to do it the Android way.  It requires more processes force closing apps then then openning up what you want.  Once a application is in memory it has 0 processes unless you are using it.  If it uses a process then it is collecting data, or doing something you want it to do.
Everytime someone say Task Killers are needed still can't differenciate between process and application under the terms of Linux.  I really do find it funny though.  You NEVER hear people stating you need a Task Killer for OSX, Ubuntu, Fedora, or <insert linux variant here>, but always recommend it for Android eventhough it is a Linux Variant itself.

  • Assert &  writing code that should never be reached

    hi dudes,
i thing i got that assertion-stuff right BUT there is one thing confusing me:
    from my book:
"The following idiom can be employed to explicitly test that certain locations in the code will never be reached.
    assert false : "This line should never be reached.";
but what is the point of writing code(at all) that will never be reached?
i mean if it should never be reached ill simply never write it.
    even in this tricky EXAMPLE
    int someMthd(int trinityMember)
    switch (trinityMember) {
        case THE_FATHER:
            return psalm101;
        case THE_SON:
            return psalm102;
        case THE_HOLY_GHOST:
            return psalm103;
        default:
            assert false: trinityMember; //Ok BETTER WOULD BE throw new AssertionError(trinityMember);
}if no case match i would get COMPILE TIME error so that will indicate me that method could(possible) never return an int. So if a i can compile it it will be ok!?
so again what is the point of writing code that should never be reached[\b]?

if no case match i would get COMPILE TIME error so
that will indicate me that method could(possible)
never return an int. So if a i can compile it it will
be ok!?But without the default case you can't compile it, so you have to write a default case (or some other code). What code would it make sense to put there other than throwing an exception of some sort or returning a default value?
so again what is the point of writing code that
should never be reached[\b]?You probably believe the code should never be reached in your example because to you it only makes sense to pass either THE_FATHER, THE_SON or THE_HOLY_GHOST as a parameter. But what if somebody were to pass THE_FIRESTARTER to your someMthd method, having not realised that you haven't coded for that argument? What should your code do then? It can't do nothing, so it makes sense to provide a default case that lets the user know (by throwing an exception), that something unexpected has happened. Or, you might decide to return a default value that is useful and perhaps somehow informs client code of the unusual circumstance (for example a return value of -1 might indicate that there is no relevant psalmX).
So this is about robustness - making sure that in unexpected circumstances, your application does something reasonable.

  • Incredibly slow internet, Connection drops.

Well.. Posting here is pretty much a last resort..
    Background on what has happened:
What i class as "acceptable" connection speeds for my phone line 4 - 6 mb.. This is the speeds i would achieve before i ran into any problems. 4mb through the day.. Sometimes ( not very often) 6mb early hours in the morning.
Mid January 2014 - Broadband starts going incredibly slow.
    I'm talking 0.1mb connection speeds.
So, i contact BT over the phone... Do all the tests and checks they tell you to do, problem persists, so i get elevated to a level 2 adviser. I get a call back from adviser, he does some magic with the exchange and my broadband speeds up.
    Speed achieved 2.5mb
not quite the speed i used to achieve but certainly bare-able...
    February / March
Exactly same as above, Internet slows down to a crawl, i contact BT, get elevated and it gets "fixed"
Speed still sitting at around 2.5mb.
    May
Parents inform me that the Internet is slow again and constantly disconnecting
(They aren't very tech savy hence why i have been dealing with the problems)
I start monitoring the connection allot closer, and notice that the connection is dropping quite allot in the evening.. I work evenings hence why i have never noticed this fact.
After doing some research and diagnostics i notice the phone line is "Noisy". So i start monitoring this too. I find that this isn't always the case.. Some times its quiet other times you can bairly hear people on the phone for the noise (imagine someone crunching up a bag of crisps next to your ear, that's what its like)
I Contact BT, quite frustrated that iv had the same problem 3 times now.. Tell them about the noise on the line, and an engineer is sent out.
Engineer does all his tests in the house, "No problems" (The line was conveniently quiet while he was doing tests).. Just before he leaves i do a line test, and it perks up with some static, i let him listen.. He does his tests all over again, "no faults on the line"
The Engineer then informs me, that in mid January when some work on a sewage pipe was being done right next to my telephone exchange, a line was cut.. I somehow dint think, for one second this is a co-incidence. From all my own tests and diagnostics this was the only explanation i had for the problems.
He leaves, i contact BT again.. Get elevated to a level 2 adviser AGAIN.. he "fixes" it..
Speed goes back up to 2.5mb
About a week later this Problem happens AGAIN.. So i contact BT - And while I'm on the phone, the line is incredibly noisy and i say to the person on the other end that it is, so i get thrown across to a different department, who insist on sending an engineer out.
Engineer comes out, does all the same tests that the first engineer did, line is quiet while he is here, i explain EVERYTHING to him.. He doesn't really have much of an explanation, tells me that the damaged wire from the sewage work was "fixed" And that 2mb is a good speed for how far i am from my exchange (maybe so, its still not the 4 - 6 i used to get though)....He decides to shimmy up the telegraph pole outside my house fiddles around up there and a couple of other things...
After calling BT again, and getting elevated to a level 2 adviser (again) my Internet is "fixed"
Speed Fluctuating between 2.5 and 3mb now.
And here we are now.......Guess what? Internet is slow again...
Iv noticed someone with a similar problem in another post, so.. Before you ask:
Yes iv done all the tests, taken all phones out, tried a different micro filter, disconnected all other devices.
My main socket doesn't have a test socket in it, so don't ask me to plug into it.

I would try this belwire fix, but i have had broadband through this socket for about 8 years now, with no problems what so ever..
So im automaticaly rulling out any sources of internal interference, as this would of already been a factor, and i wouldn't notice a sudden drop in speed..

  • Incredibly slow.

Hi. I'm new-ish to the Mac world. I've had my Mac for a couple of months and have had no complaints at all. I have the 20" iMac, the one before the 24" was released.
However, lately, my Mac is incredibly slow. Applications quit or stall out for no particular reason, it takes a millenium for programs to start up, and half the time when I try to restart, I have to click the restart option 3-4 times to get it to actually restart.
Is there any particular reason for this, and how do I fix it. I dont have that many files on my computer so formatting wouldn't be that much of a problem at all. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Charlie Fry

SubcutaneousPhat & ipod4meok, the very first thing you should do is open process viewer located in appications/utilities/Activity monitor. In Activity monitor click where it says %CPU and it will list the applications that are using all of your CPU. Sometimes just quitting an application and trashing that applications preferences located in your user account ~/library/preferences will fix you problem. Still not working properly then open disk utility located in applications/utilities/disk utility and then reset permissions. After you are done with that and the Disk utility is still open click the verify disk button. It won't fix your hard drive but it will say if something is wrong. Mac still not working properly, then add another user in the System Preference pane which can be accessed in the drop down menu from the Apple in the top left corner. Login as the new user and if your Mac is quick again then it is a problem in your account only however if it is still slow then you have a system wide problem, possibly a corrupt file. If after you add a new user and it is still slow then my suggestion rather than spending hours troubleshooting is to do an archive and install off your original install disk. You can drag the mail folder and other important files over to the new system file from the old and have fresh start. You will have to run software update more than once but you should be good as new. Someone else in this thread was talking about memory well when I first bought my iMac it came with the stock 512mb and ran very quick. I had already ordered another 512mb from OWC but the mail(post office) was running slow. I only had problems with one application Adobe Photoshop which is still just as slow as it was with 512mb vs. 1 gig. Bottom line is Adobe needs to update their software I don't need to update my Mac so take all the memory talk with a grain of salt. Still having problems after this post back here and their are a few other tests to run.

  • IPhoto is incredibly slow

iPhoto 11 (upgrade) is incredibly slow. Any ideas why?

It took me from Friday afternoon until Monday morning to narrow this down, but here's what it was on my system, which has 6,300+ photos and a library size of 17+ GB:
It wasn't the number of photos, or the size of the library, or Faces, or Spotlight, or anything "normal" that was causing my machine to virtually lock up about a minute after launching iPhoto '11 (9.1.3). Activity Monitor showed almost no CPU activity, and little to no disk or network activity.
What was causing the slow-down was something in the Accounts preference within iPhoto. I had about half a dozen e-mail accounts, Facebook, Flickr, and MobileMe listed as accounts. Once I deleted them, iPhoto sprang back to life.
I have since discovered that iPhoto will continue to wait for services in your Accounts preferences to come on-line indefinitely ... with no warning or notice that it is doing so. While it is waiting, it for some reason kills the performance of your entire system, so whatever other applications you have running (including Finder and Dock) will be extremely unresponsive.

  • Connection to iTunes incredibly slow on a very fast internet connection

My connection to iTunes is incredibly slow. I have tested my internet speed and it is 75Mbps/s. I am currently in Singapore but have a U.S. iTunes account. It takes about 3-4 hours before a standard def TV show is ready to watch on either my iMac, my Macbook pro, or my Apple TV. This never used to be a problem until a couple of months ago, and it is incredibly frustrating. I have both my iMac and my AppleTV connected via ethernet but the situation is even worse over wireless. Does anyone have any ideas? This is killing me!!!

    Hello and welcome...
This may not seem relevant to iTunes but make sure there's enough free space on your Mac's startup disk.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • IPhoto incredibly slow now

Ever since installing Mavericks and the new iPhoto, iPhoto has become amazingly slow. It takes much longer to load photos. I keep the trash emptied before quiting each time. And, why is it slower? Is there anything else I can do to speed it back up?

    Danesmoor wrote:
I've recently installed Snow Leopard & have yet to see any great differences or benefits.
The big problem I am having is that iPhoto is incredibly slow now in panning zoomed images.
e.g. I open an image in full screen and zoom in (which is slower than previously) and then use the multitouch function on the touchpad to pan... And I am presented with lag which appears to be buffered - i.e. I move my fingers in a certain pattern and then remove them & the software gradually follows this path with a lengthy delay.
    Any ideas or help?
I know what you mean. Ever since I purchased Snow Leopard, my Mac has been acting un-Mac like. iPhoto hangs during simple operations. I've had to do a forced shut down. This is getting a little irritating, I hope they resolve these issues soon.

  • Wi-fi incredibly slow

Downloading some magazines to which I subscribe is often incredibly slow, but the speed depends on the network to which the iPad is attached. Some networks deliver downloads acceptably quickly but most including, of course, my network at home are taking an unbelievable 90x as long as other networks. This is clearly an Apple problem. There's something wrong with the November release. And yes, I've reloaded the Apps and rebooted everything and restarted everything.

What worked for me was to return the iPad to an Apple store. They are very reasonable, especially if it is fairly new. When I updated to the 4.2.1, the update was probably corrupted so I just explained my issue to the technician on the phone, he referred me to the store, they swapped my unit out for a brand new one, updated the new iPad right in the store and my new iPad is working really well. So either you could have a defective iPad or corrupted software due to the update. The technician on the phone explained to me that as the iPad is updating, it could possibly not install certain files thus breaking the code and causing the iPad not to run well. Swap it out, see if that works. If it is an older iPad, at least tell me you bought some sort of warranty after paying at least 500+ on brand new technology? If not, perhaps Apple can work with you. The iPad came out this year, so you are still under the 1 year warranty.

  • ITunes incredibly slow to load, cannot see any devices...

    Hello,
iTunes is incredibly slow - takes 2 minutes+ to load. When it does load, it cannot see iPod touch, iPad 3 or iPhone 5. It could yesterday.
    Updated iTunes.
Totally removed all iTunes and associated programs, and reinstalled.
Checked Apple USB drivers, all functioning.
    Deleted preferences file.
    Ran on Windows safe mode.
Ran 3 different malware scans in Safe Mode.
    Unistalled Quicktime.
Ran on basic boot under MSIconfig.
    Please help!
    Windows 7, i5, 6gb ram.

Yes, that's a good point. On my MBP, everything works just fine, so it's not an internet connectivity issue. Both machines are running the same anti-virus/firewall software with the same settings. The MBP is wireless via Time Capsule, whereas the iMac is hardwired to TC. The only difference is the entire library is on the iMac and AppleTV pulls from it for both audio & photos.
But these are all "library" issues, which are unaffected. It's only the "store" and the rendering of the pages within it. I tried the parental settings trick to disable iTunes Store & iTunes U - sped right up on display. But as soon as I changed settings so I could actually access content? Slowed right down...
    Any other thoughts??
    Thanks
