Ipodresq for iPod hard drive disaster?

My 4G 40GB iPod has died a miserable death, and naturally, it has occurred less one month after the warranty ended. Nice.
I took it to the Genius Bar yesterday, and they confirmed its demise. Apparently the hard drive has retired. ** By the way, if you can't mount your iPod, you're getting the folder icon and the sad iPod icon, and occasionally you are seeing the big battery charging picture stuck on one picture, chances are your iPod is dying, too.**
Has anyone used iPodresq specifically for a hard drive replacement? If so, how much was it? I am concerned that it will just be cheaper for me to buy a new iPod.

Well... i have multiple libraries that require me to reformat often... plus it doesnt help that i am running third party software on my ipod...

  • Swapping an iPod hard drive for an iBook hard drive?

I have a broken iPod which should have a fully functional hard drive. And I have an iBook G4 with a fried hard drive. I took the ipod apart and pulled the hard drive. My question is, can I put the iPod hard drive in the iBook? They're both IDE drives right? So it should just be a matter of going through the 200 step iBook disassembly procedure right?
The iPod hard drive isnt large but I'd like to resurect the iBook if at all possible.

nlmart, Welcome to the discussion area!
One thing to be aware of is that Apple has always recommended against using the iPod as a system hard drive. Presumably the operation as a system hard drive is more stressful than that of a music file server.
Performance would also suffer compared to even a 4200RPM 2.5" drive. Not to mention that most 2.5" 5400RPM (or even 7200RPM) drives will absolutely blow away a 1.8" iPod drive in terms of transfer rate.

  • Color iPod Hard Drive

My friend fired his hard drive by getting it wet, and wants a replacement. Can I use any iPod hard drive for this, or do I need to get a certian size? If I swap them out, will the iPod work with the new one?

Check out ipodresq . . . or do a search on Google. Lots of places sell them (iPod parts), and I'll just bet you could get the specs from one of them . . .

  • How to delete iPod Hard Drive files? Help appreciated.

Since I have under a thousand songs, I enabled my Nano as a hard drive on my PC, and put the library on iPod. I went over to my new iMac Core Duo, and placed the songs into the empty iTunes there. I deleted the iTunes Music Folder on my iPods Hard Drive, and disenabled it for disk use. However, when I try to update my iPod on my iMac, it still shows that the iPod is filled up with the iTunes Music Folder on the hard drive because it won't let me update. I checked the folder once again and it shows nothing on the iPod Hard Drive.
My question is how do I delete that iTunes Music Folder, that I used to transfer songs to the iMac from my PC, off of my Nano's hard drive?
    Thanks,
    Martin

    Martin,
If all the music is on your iMac, then why don't you restore your iPod...
    Restore the iPod
Then reload everything from iTunes and the capacity and use space should be accurate.

  • IPod Hard Drive Fears

I use both mac and pc. so i am forced to restore my ipod quite frequently ( at least once a week)
I did the same with an external backup drive (Format many times) that ive had for a while. Eventually the drive stopped working all together. I've heard that the same thing can happen for any hard drive, including the iPod's. Im afraid that eventually my beloved iPod will bite the dust because of hard drive issues due to over-formatting. has anything ever happened like that to any one else?

  • IPod Hard drive cord

I was reading the Apple news on yahoo.com and I read that the maker of the iPod hard drive now sells a cord that can hook the hard drive to a normal computer. So its just like having a hard drive with a USB cord. If anyone has any details, leave a post on here. Thanks

This has nothing to do with the iPod except the hard drive is the same one used.
The actual hard drives are available from other sources.
The cable provides a connection between the 1.8inch
Toshiba hard drive (used in the iPod) and a standard 2.5 inch 40p in IDE hard drive interface.
It's not for use with the iPod.
Currently, Apple makes their own cable to attach this hard drive (internally) to the iPod .

    You need an HDMI switch.

  • On my Macbook pro 15 2011, System Profiler is suggesting that it uses SATA III for the hard drive and SATA II for the Optical Drive.  Is that true?

On my Macbook pro 15, 2011, System Profiler is suggesting that it uses SATA III for the hard drive and SATA II for the Optical Drive.  Is that true?

That is correct. The tech specs indicate:
    Hard Drive Interface
    6.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA)
    Optical Drive Interface
3.0 or 6.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA)

I tried your suggestion, and it's been giving me the message "Preparing for Backup" for the past 8 hours.  Does this mean TM is backing up my hard drive?  I'll give it a few more hours, but if nothing else happens, I'm not sure what else to do.  I'm not sure if there are any new external hard drives that are compatible with ML yet.

I have ordered a 800 firewire to 800 firewire cable and am hoping to use the target mode option to copy files from the MBP.
    Is this possible?
    Hope so!
Any advice and or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks,

    Thanks Ogelthorpe.
Just bought an enclosure to try that also.
Hoping the MBP isn't really dead but just feigning death
    Fingers crossed.

  • How do you find the right replacement for a hard drive

i have a 2007 macbook and the hard drive just went out and i want to find a new one that would be combatible

    For a new hard drive try Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives&Order=PRICE
Or OWC for regular hard drives and SSDs  http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Here are instructions on replacing the hard drive in a MacBook with a removable battery. http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088
After you put in your new hard disk put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window.
Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. You should see your hard drive in the left hand column along with your other drives. Click on the drive and select the Erase tab. Set the format value to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Erase button. After that has finished select the Partition tab. Type in a Name for your hard drive and select how many partitions you want from the Volume Scheme. The usual setting is one partition. Click on the Options button after you've selected a partition to make sure it's set for GUID. Then click the Apply button and after the Partitioning is done quit Disk Utility.
You can now follow the instructions on the install screen

  • I have a late 2011 mac book pro and I'm wondering if it uses SATA II or SATA III for the hard drive? Which eventually I'm going to replace with a SSD.

I was wondering if the late 2011 macbook pro uses SATA II or SATA III for the hard drive. The reseason I'm asking this is because some day I'm going to replace the Hard drive for a SSD drive down the road and would like to use all the performance of the SATA controler.

    SATA III.

  • Recommendations needed for portable hard drives

Looking for a recommendation for portable hard drives -
    1. I'm buying a new 2TB portable hard drive to use with my iMac for my Time Machine backups.
    2. Additionally, I am buying a second 2TB portable HD for the iMac for SuperDuper back ups (I'm adding a second layer of back up and bootable clone protection to my life).
    3. Finally, I need to also purchase a 1TB portable HD for SuperDuper back ups for my MacBook Air.
I'd just as soon keep life simple and buy the same brand for all 3 drives. I want things easy.
(I have Mavericks on both computers and don't want to worry about Western Digital software inadvertently being installed without my knowing it, possible causing me to lose data on my computers. So maybe it would be simplest all around to avoid WD?)
Simple and easy and reliable - that's all I ask.

    Information.
    Best external hard drive?

  • Scheduling backup for external hard drive?

I purchased a seagate freeagent desk external hard drive that is already formatted for Mac. It did not come with any software and connects fine to my powerbook G4. I am wondering which application I can use to set an automatic backup schedule for this hard drive? I can manually drag and drop, but prefer to set an automatic schedule. Does anyone know how to do this?

If your PowerBook meets the technical specs for Leopard, you could install that and then use Time Machine:
