IPods and Vista

I recently got an error message about Vista corrupting iPods when ejecting, so I downloaded the necessary update. Everything worked fine until today when I ejected the iPod, the screen went black and all it does flash the Apple logo as if it restarting but it won't do anything else except flash that logo. Is there anything that I can do to fix this? This is my second iPod and I don't really feel like shelling out another $300 for a new one. Any help would be appreciated.

First, try resetting it (hold down the menu and center buttons with the hold button off for 6 seconds) while it is connected. If this doesn't work, disconnect it, let the battery deplete (24 hours) connect it to power, let it charge for at least 30 minutes then Reset it while it is connected to power. You may have to try resetting it several times.

  • Click wheel ipod and vista question

Hello, I have a 4G click wheel 40 gig ipod (updater version 3.1.1) and I have been using my mothers computer which has windows xp and i haven't upgraded itunes to the version 8. I was given a new computer (32 bit) which is running windows vista basic. My question is am I going to have problems with using vista basic and my older ipod? I have heard that it was turning older ipods into bricks and have been scared to transfer everything over to the new computer.
Also, I am using it with an Alpine KCA-420i (got it the same time as the ipod) in the truck, and it worked great for a while and for the past two years it freezes up, skips songs or just won't work and was wandering if it was due to upgrading itunes? The last time the ipod was updated was for the version it is running now.
I am trying to be careful with my ipod since it got frozen during an ice storm (no electricity for nine days) and left in the truck in bellow freezing temps for a couple of hours. The hard drive didn't appreciate it and is now not really working all that great. clicking, whirling ,grinding noises ya give it a couple good whacks on the back or sides it starts to work again. I read some post on reformatting the disk, last time i tried it the ipod froze but now i am going to try again. I did the diagnostic mode solution and it keeps getting frozen in the HDD scan.
Sorry this is long, but if anybody has any suggestions or answers that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I don't have a guide or anything, but it is almost as easy as replacing it with another hard drive, and there are online guides for doing that, for example
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Device/iPod4th_Generation_orPhoto
Be sure to use those plastic tools. If you use metal ones, you will damage the iPod's case.
And it's a Compact Flash card that I used, not an SD card (which is smaller). Compact Flash cards 16GB and below are getting affordable (if you shop around online), although 32GB and higher ones are still expensive. 4GB cards are very cheap, so you may want to try it with one of those, to confirm it works, since it is always possible there are other problems with your iPod.
    1. Get one of these adapters, or equivalent. It's $5 with shipping included.
    [CF Compact-Flash SSD To Toshiba IPod 1.8 inch Adapter|http://cgi.ebay.com/CF-Compact-Flash-SSD-To-Toshiba-IPod-1-8-inch-Adapt erW0QQitemZ180303249125QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCA_Cables_Adapters?hash=item29fae93ee5& _trksid=p3911.c0.m14&trkparms=72%3A1240%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A2% 7C294%3A50]
The listing above on eBay is the same item from the same seller as the one I bought.
    2. It fits in the iPod case with only one minor mod. There is a pair of jumper pins, used for the master/slave setting; you can see it on the image in the listing (on the left side). You want it with the jumper ON, for the master setting. It sticks out too much, so I just bent the pins 90 degrees with needle nose pliers, and the jumper still fits. If your 4G iPod is the 40GB model, it has the thicker drive and case, so it may fit fine without bending it over.
    3. Connect the Compact Flash card to the adapter and connect the adapter where the 1.8-inch hard drive was connected. You need to put something non-conducting between the logic board and the adapter/CF card. A stiff piece of paper (like a business card) would work; I cut a piece of clear plastic from the +impossible to open without hurting yourself+ packaging material that most tech products come packed in these days. Cut it to the right rectangle shape to fit between the logic board and adapter/CF card without sliding around.
    4. The adapter plus CF Card is much smaller than the hard drive, so you need to fill that space to avoid it rattling around. Cardboard pieces would work, but if you want to take advantage of the lighter weight, get something light. I used some of that flexible foamy packing sheets that are used to wrap around delicate items for shipping. I cut appropriate size pieces to take up the extra space. I put one layer between the adapter/CF card and the logic board and the rest between the adapter/CF card and the metal half of the case.
Then, you just connect the iPod and run a Restore, as if it was a regular 4G iPod. The three key advantages are better shock resistance, lighter weight, and no drive spin-up delay. The only real disadvantage is lower capacity, unless you get a more expensive CF card with higher capacity.
Note to other readers: I also tried this retrofit with an older 3rd gen iPod. It did not work for me and the parts I used; I could not get the iPod to format or restore with the Compact Flash card inside.

  • IPod and Vista Error (-48)

Hi. I recently bought a new Acer computer with Windows Vista on it. I installed iTunes and started having problems. So I reformatted the iPod and installed the newest software on it and updates iTunes to 7.3
I tried putting my songs onto my iPod. I have a 20gig 4G. It got about 2/3s of the way done and then just stayed on the one song and kind of froze up. When I disconnected the iPod and turned it on, it only had like 10 songs on it, even though iTunes showed I had uploaded a couple thousand on it. So I retried with a smaller batch of songs and now I get an error (-48), which I'm not sure what it means. Also, whenever I plug in the iPod, I get a pop up from Vista telling me to schedule a disk check on the iPod to try to fix problems, but when I did that, my computer just froze during the reboot.
Can anyone help me out here? Is there an update I'm missing? Or can anyone tell me how to fix this error (-48)?
    Thanks

Although it's still not fully compatible with Vista, the latest version of iTunes (7.1.1.5) addresses some of the major compatibility issues.
So, installing the latest version of iTunes onto your computer might be worth a try (I'm not sure if your problem is rooted in a different cause, but try installing iTunes v. 7.1.1.5 anyways).
Here is the installer page on Apple's website:

  • IPod and Vista

I have just bought a new computer with Vista and can't seem to get my new iTunes purchases to synch onto the iPod (although they show up in my library). Anyone have same issue? I have the most recent version of iTunes software, and have tried all kinds of setup, but seem stuck. I don't want to lose what I have on the iPod already (I have things that are no longer in my Library).

    Has this computer been authorized?
    See this for details:
About iTunes Store authorization and deuathorization
Also, what version of iTunes are you running on?
If you haven't upgraded to 7.1.0.59 yet, it might be a good idea, as it offers better iTunes and Vista compatibility.
    Download it here:

Other iPods like my 5.5Gen 80GB and an old iPod mini 4GB and my sister's 80GB iPod classic are recognized without a hitch. I reinstalled the windows vista USB drivers for iPod and reinstalled iTunes. The 2 iPod Photo are working all right and sync OK in my desktop PC. Any advice would be very appreciated.

  • 30gig 5th generation video ipod and windows vista

i've been reading alot of posts putting vista down in reguards to the video ipod . i just wanted to say that i have window's vista home premium and my first video ipod
30gig and i've not had a single problem related to vista.
any problems have been to me never having owned an ipod .
just thought i'd set the record straight for those who are thinking of getting a video ipod and already have vista .
you know , just fyi .
but i am wondering , how well does the ipod record notes ?
and anyone here in a band and tape their rehearsals ? was wondering how it sounds . thanks all !

after I watched them they dissappeared from my ipod,
Sounds like you have selected to only sync unwatched video content to your iPod.
This is a setting that you can change in your iTunes preferences.

  • 30G Video IPod and Windows Vista - Help!

I just recently bought a new computer equipped with Windows Vista. I have a 12" G4 iBook that was my main computer from which I ran my 30G Video iPod, and now I am wanting to sync my iPod with my new Windows computer, and this will be the only system I use with my iPod.
I realize there are many problems with compatibility of iTunes/iPods with Windows Vista.
My question is, barring the problems with iTunes, I downloaded the latest iTunes anyways and tried to use Yamipod to bring my 1600+ songs onto my computer from my iPod by bypassing iTunes. Problem is, my computer doesn't even recognize the iPod at all. iTunes does, but when I cancel the box asking me to reformat my iPod to Windows format and try to use Yamipod, Yamipod doesn't even recognize an iPod existing. I thought maybe it was just the program, so I tried about 4 others, but nothing. I also used the cd that came with my iPod and put the drivers onto this computer, but the actual computer still doesn't even recognize it plugged in.
Any ideas? Also, because a lot of my songs are in m4a format, how will that work if I am able to put them on this computer? Will I have to convert them all to mp3?
Thank you for any help you can give.

And given that Vista has been available in Release
candidate version for ages and that the release date
has been known for ages, shouldn't apple have made
the effort to make itunes compatible with Vista?
After all, the vast majority of itunes users live in
    Windows land.
perhaps you should familiarise yourself with the common usage and implications of the symbol string
but as you clearly aren't familiar with it, if i took your question seriously, which i don't, then the answer is no...
your argument is that being first and being in the majority rules
that'll be apple then won't it
    i) i can't be bothered to check the itunes release date, certainly it was out in 2001, which is several years before microsoft even figured out what to call the os formerly known as longhorn, let alone finished sawing off the pieces it couldn't make work
ii) the majority of people with portable music players use ipod/itunes, so it is for microsoft to conform with the majority and not make changes that impair the products used by the majority
so, by your own argument, it is microsoft's responsibility to maintain compatibility

  • A problem with my ipod shuffle and vista

    Hello all,
was wondering if anyone could offer some ideas on this. My flat mate just moved and I was using his mac for my ipod shuffle. I have just bought a Dell with windows vista and have put itunes on it. When I put my ipod in the USB port, vista says it does not recognised it and my ipod does not show up in the source area of itunes. I have tried to reformat it but the recomended program is incompatible with vista (it says only it works for XP).Is there any other way to reformat my ipod for vista? or is there a vista program available somewhere else.
    many thanks Kim

    Hi there.
I have similar problem with my ipod nano.
I recently bought a new PC with Vista, and for some strange reason, initially my ipod was recognised as I was able to transfer purchased music from my ipod to my itunes.
However now, a week or so later, every time I connect my ipod in the dock, it says "USB Device Not Recognised".
I have tried to restore my ipod software, but it wont let me do that, saying that it has a fault and needs to be replaced!
I initially thought it might be an ipod problem, but the store say it works fine, and restored (and wiped!) my ipod but it still doesnt work!
I connected a friend's ipod and the same thing happened.
So although I can listen to music in my itunes I cannot synchronise my ipod... what am I supposed to do?!
Its very frustrating... does anyone know the solution please please please!

I have a problem with the iTunes Store, I have an ipod and an iphone 2. I have a PC with Windows Vista Home Premium 2007, entering into iTunes Store on the main screen I get only AppStore, Podcast and iTunes U. In my screen I get only ipad2 Podcast, iTunes U Downloads. My problem is I can not access any application to download music, videos, books, etc..
ITunes will be installed wrong or what should I do to activate these options?

Go to the front page of the Store, and click Change Country.  Make sure it is set to the country where you actually are.
Then you will be able to see everything that is for sale in your country, which, depending where you live, might or might not include music.

  • IPod Touch and Vista Ultimate won't get along

I recently purchased an iPod Touch 16gb and have had some major issues ever since. THis is long winded but that's because without all details I think peopel will tell me to do what i've already tried.
When I first connected the device up I was prompted to update my iTunes and this completed successfully. Then when loading my music onto the device i got a few errors saying "The iPd cannot be synced. The disk could not be read from or written to." and then "Attempting to copy to disk 'xxx' failed. The disk could not be read from or written to. It sounded like a hard disk error but I persevered and managed to get my music loaded.
Then everything was going to fine for a while until one day I'd left my iPod attached to my PC (Vista Ultimate 32bit) overnight to charge and when I took it to work that day I found that all my music and videos had disapeared. I did some searching and this seemed to have happened to others.
When I got home and attached the iPod to my computer I was prompted to do a restore. So I kicked this off but part way through I received an error saying "The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occured (9)." And that was it. Dead iPod. It wouldn't turn on and wasn't recognised anymore apart from windows saying "USB Device Not Recognised". Apple replaced this for me thinking it was a hardware problem.
Unfortunately I had the same problems with the next one. This time however I uninstalled and reinstalled all my apple applications (iTunes, Mobile Device, Quicktime etc.) as mentioned on the support pages. Unfortunately it didn't solve the problem. Once again I recieved the same errors and my music disapeared. This time I did a restore using the iPod menu and that was successful but then I kept getting the sync and write errors so once again I tried a iTunes restore and same again... dead iPod and back to Apple for my 3rd iPod.
I've now got my third one and am having the same issues. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the apple products many times, updated my USB drives and windows is completely to date. I've also created another user in Vista and get the same problem. I have a feeling this has something to do with the Apple Mobile Device Support but am not too sure as i've unistalled and reinstalled it a number of times.
Any advice or tips appreciated before I brick my 3rd touch and ask for a refund!

  • My ipod and itunes is no longer showing the music videos i purchased..

im pretty new with ipods and my ipod and itunes arent showing the two music videos i had on there. Even the songs that went with the music videos are no longer on the itunes or my ipod. how do i fix this?
    60 gb video   Windows XP

    - I would start with
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    or
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • I updated my iPod and now my songs won't show?

I plugged in my iPod and it asked if I wanted to update it and I did. After that none of my songs would appear on my iPod, but itunes showed in the left pane that everything was on it. I read another topic with the same problem and I think I need to update my itunes software..however..it won't update because it says I need XP or Vista...I have 2000. I can't go a day without my iPod what do I do?!?

That's the kind of solution I'm interested in, Farias. Who does apple think they are to have me update my iPod and THEN tell me AFTER THE FACT that I need to purchase a new $50 OS if I want to continue using. And when they keep asking me if I want to update they need to give me a link with information about the update so that I fully understand what I'm getting, therefore I'll be absolutely certain whether I want to update at all. This is my second iPod so I've spent well over $450 on them with the iPod and the songs I've purchased from iTunes...I don't just have $50 dollars to go and buy XP because they're under a "contract"...I didn't get any kind of newsletter informing me of that. Apple better find a way to fix my problem without me paying a penny otherwise I'll ask for a Zune for christmas.

  • Possible to get songs OFF your Ipod and onto an external HDD or your PC?

I have songs on my Ipod that are NOT on my PC (thru having to manually manage my library in the past over 2 'smallish' HDDs in my PC).
When I open my Ipod from within Windows I 'see' the songs in the Music folder as .mpeg4 but no song titles so I can't differentiate between them. For example, a song is listed as CVFK.mpeg4, another as DPKQ.mpeg4 etc ...
When I open the Music folder on my Ipod from within i-TUNES I can see the songs I want, I can "highlight" them, right-click and 'COPY' them, but for the life of me I can't seem to 'PASTE' them anywhere...like IN MY LIBRARY which is on my new external USB HDD.
Why be able to "COPY" if you can't do anything with them? It seems you must be able to, but how? I WANT to copy them off my Ipod and put them into that new exteranl HDD that has 75% of my i-tunes library...the other 25% being my Springsteen collection that at the mo is ONLY on my i-Pod.
I am using a 30gb video ipod with latest software (1.2.1), iTunes 7.1.1.5 (latest) and a fully-updated MS Vista Home Premium.
ANY assistance would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Rgds

The transfer of non iTunes Music Store content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and was written long before iTunes 7 and Windows Vista so it requires a little adaptation as the iPod preferences are no longer in the location described for instance but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated that will let you transfer individual tracks then there are a number of third party utilities that will do what you want. You can use these to retrieve individual music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, check for Vista compatibility as they may not all have been updated yet. Some of these are free and some are commercial but generally they are not very expensive. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
