IPods don't recognize music files on PC

Our ipods can no longer find the music files on the PC hard drive.  We receive an error message that files can't be located, although they are still listed and visible in itunes.  (Itunes can't play them either.)  Have reset, restarted, etc.  Have checked and set the location of music files in the preferences dialog box.  Have copied music files to other drives, changed settings, no help.  We have about 7000 songs, but the iPods "see" on about 250.  Running Windows 7 on a relatively new Sony Viao.

Ipod touch and other recent ipod models are not "USB Mass Storage Class (MSC)" devices and therefore the music files cannot be seen by Samsung Wiselink. If the files are in the hard drive part of an iPod that allows hard drive mode they will be seen as will photos.
Photos on an iPod touch can be viewed via Wiselink if they have been transferred via iPhoto to the folder that mounts under "devices" when iPhoto and the iPod touch communicate.

  • IPod doesn't recognize music files

I have an 80 gb iPod Classic that failed to sync to iTunes (10.4) library. I downgraded my iTunes to 9.1.2 and was able to sync the iPod, or so I thought. On the iTunes end, everything seems to be working fine, but when I unplug the iPod (only after it has been ejected properly), iPod shows no music in storage. When reconnected iPod to mac and browsing the iPod via Finder, I can see the mp3 files are there, and if I look in iTunes, iPod shows the storage space being used by the music files as OTHER. Tried syncing several times and each time same issue.
I had tried everything: changing sync cables, manually transferring the songs to the iPod, rebooting. PLEASE HELP!

I ended up restoring the iPod several times (and fixing the drive via DiskUtility), and batch-by-batch uploading the songs from iTunes to the iPod. For now it seems to work. Can't tell why it wasn't working in the first place.
    Good luck!

  • HT1349 I have recently moved home from the UK to the Cayman Islands, my PC in the UK has been destroyed as it was 240v but my ipod will now not sync with itunes on my new laptop can anybody help as my ipod holds all my music files

Now with a little more space, I believe this to be a simple fix just not for me! I have recently moved from the UK to the Cayman Islands and there lies the problem,  'voltage'  ....
My UK PC was 240v and has now been destroyed so when I secured a new laptop 110v and downloaded itunes I was told by 'itunes' as my ipod was linked to another PC it would not/could not sync to my ipod. As the ipod holds ALL my music files this is a major drag. Can anybody tell me how to unassociate my ipod with my old PC so I can sync with my new laptop.
    Regards Rob

All computers sold in the past 10 years are univeral insofar as voltage is concerned, so it may have been destroyed but not because of voltage. The right thing to do is to restore the backup that you must have made of your old PC to your new laptop. Then you will not lose anything when you sync the phone.

  • 60gb iPod does not see music files on my external HD

I'm going nuts trying to figure out why my iBook does not see the music files on my external HD.
I have a 250gb external hard drive (that I put together with an enclosure and HD I bought from Tiger Direct). I have the hard drive hooked up to my G3 iBook via Fire Wire. The HD comes up on the desktop, but none of the files are seen. Now, when I take the same HD and hook it up to my Windows PC, all my music is there.
I really don't want to have my iPod hooked up to my PC. My G3 is too small to hold all the music. I need to have the external HD to handle all the music for my iPod.
How do I accomplish this on my G3?
    Thanks!
    iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The NTFS format (windows) has only read support for OS X.
How did s/he copy the music on the external drive? Was the music on his/her pc? If yes the hierarchy may be different for the pc version of iTunes library, or is it that he can't find the files even from the finder?

Just to add to hyphen's reply, FAT32 has a maximum size of 32GB. The user cannot make the partition larger than 32GB should they decide to go down that route.
Another alternative is a utility called TransMac. When installed on a PC, it will allow the PC to recognise a Mac OS formatted drive and read the files within. No need then to worry about all that FAT32 and NTFS malarky stuff. It weighs in at $64 dollars though for a 1-3 user licence:

  • Can't recognize music files on nano

when i plug in my nano to my computer it says that it cannot recognize any files on the nano and that i need to use the ipod updater to do a factory reset.
I tried a factory reset...a manual reset....and updated all the programs on my computer. I don't understand because my nano worked for the first couple days when i brought it home and suddenly it has no files on it and won't recognize it when i plug it in.
The icon shows up on the desktop, but not in iTunes.
    anyone with the same problem?

If you leave iTunes up all the time, you should probably quit iTunes. I've noticed that when iTunes had chosen not to recognize one of my iPods, nothing I do will change that until I quit out of iTunes. Sometimes iPods get "lost" due to preference corruption. Quitting iTunes or rebooting the computer will usually take care of that.

  • ITunes wont recognize music files

    Windows 7
    Dell Inspiron PC
Much to my regret, I moved music files and now itunes cant find them. They are simply transparent to itunes; not listed in the songs list.  I tried to change the iTunes advanced settings for file location to no avail.
I managed to find most of the music files on my C drive using Windows Explorer.  When I click and play the music directly from WE, itunes launches and the song magically becomes part of the itunes library list of songs.  I have over 3,000 songs ...is there a simple way to get itunes to recognize all of them without a set of clicks.
    Thanks  for your help

Open iTunes to Music view.  Then find the folder of songs and drag it into the open Music window.
(If you normally run iTunes in full screen mode, make it smaller so you can find the folder and do the drag.)

  • Samsung TV Wiselink Won't Recognize Music Files on Touch

Just got a new Samsung DLP TV with Wiselink, which is a USB port on the TV that allows you to connect other devices to show pictures (jpeg files) and play music (mp3). I attached my Touch using a USB connector and the TV immediately recognized it and in fact named "Apple iPod" on the screen as the connected device. However, the TV said "no music files found." Anyone have a suggestion?

  • ITunes Suddenly Won't Recognize Music Files

I have synced my iPod with my Toshiba laptop more times than I can count. When I opened iTunes this morning, iTunes did not show any of my music/podcasts, etc. After a moment of panic, I realized that everything was still on my computer and in my iPod, but it is as if this was a brand new version of iTunes. iTunes also "sses" my iPod, but will not let me change anything. I seem to recall accepting an automatic upgrade of iTunes recently (is this what I get for not using Safari?) but I think I have used iTunes since then. What gives? Do I need to reconstruct my library in iTunes? If so, will I lose my Playlists? Did the upgrade cause this problem?

yes i can play them with other players. i've tried 6.0.1 still the same problem. i had cleared my library, files kept of course, and just added my music folder to the library. they were all there before. i think it won't recognize cds that i've imported using musicmatch and itunes in the past. does anyone know why? thanks

  • IPod Touch changed all music files to other

I'm using a 2nd Generation 16GB iPod Touch. My friend was playing with it yesterday, and he played with it till the battery was completely dead. I turned it on briefly and I looked at the music and I noticed that only one song was in my iPod, Hot for Teacher by Van Halen, a song I had bought earlier that day through iTunes from my iPod Touch. Normally I have over 6GB of music on it.
So I plugged it into my PC to charge it and such, and when I started iTunes and looked at that bar that tells you how much of each type of files you have (music, video, photos, apps, and other) I saw that I now had over 6GB of other and around 5MB of music. I think that my iPod somehow messed up when my friend used it till the battery died, and changed all the music to "other" except that one song.
So guessing this, I synced my iPod with my computer. I got all the music back on it, but now there is still 6GB of "other", and my iPod is nearly full. I want to know how I can remove all that "other", I never had 6GB of it before.
    Thanks.

That much other indicates corrupted data on your phone. The fix is a restore in iTunes. Here are the instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414. iTunes will reload your songs, etc after the restore.

  • Ipod Classic wont recognize Music as Music it says "other"

I just got an iPod Classic of 120Gb..
Yesterday i installed the latest iTunes, and restore de iPod Classic, it works fine..
Now here is the problem i have around 7,000 songs in my PC, thats like 50GB-60GB.. I tried syncing my device with al the music with no succes, after 3 or 4 hours transfering songs y unpluged from the Itunes button and then disconected from the PC and the iPod says i have no music.. I went to the space in the HDD of the iPod and says 50GB of "other" instead of "music"..
I tried it again thinking i did something wrong, but same problem actually everytime i conect to itunes the iPod says i need to restore.. So i restore everytime..
Now thinking the iPod was working bad, i transfer just 1 song manually and it works..!! I was able to hear it actually. So i thought if i do the manual transfer could be fixed.. I did transfed first 2,000 songs in one step and didnt work.. Same problem..
I know i can use other software basically other firmware and this would be fixed but i love to have my things like the original.. So.. How do i fix it..?
Its obvious there is no way im going to transfer manually 7,000 songs..

Where and when did you buy this iPod? The 120G iPod Classic was replaced by the newer 160GB some years ago, so it begs the question "did you buy this iPod second-hand?"

Still better than the alternative surely? And since you are the one who said: I tried it again thinking i did something wrong, but same problem actually everytime it makes me think that perhaps you are, every time. We just havent discovered yet, what that is.
Have you connected the iPod to your iTunes Library and let the Sync complete? Did you see the message telling you that it has completed?
Did you check (if not, try it now) that the Capacity bar at the bottom of the iTunes Device window looks more or less correct?
If the blue "audio" is small, and the orange "Other" is large, then try clicking the Sync button again before disconnecting.
When you remove the iPod from the computer, you do use the eject (aka safely disconnect) button, don't you? Either of these, according to how you have your iTunes configured:

  • IPod won't recognize music on my computer

Hi..tried to get help last night with problem and no luck yet...
The history: I plugge IPod Nano into my computer at home and a message square came up asking if I wanted to switch libraries, or something...stoopid me said yes and in blink of an eye there is no longer my library on my IPod and it has completely wiped it off my entire computer.
TODAY...I take my IPod to my office to my laptop where I am hoping my library still exist. AND...when I turn on Itunes the library on my laptop IS my original list...YEAH...I have a backup...
BUT...when I plug in my IPOD today it brings up the message box with the library switch question this time I answer NO and what I have now is my laptop computer ITunes library is on the screen, but my IPod is still showing this new empty library that appeared last night after the fiasco. How do I safely get the music library from my computer to the IPod...I am afraid to do anything lest I lose my library forever...
What do I do? Is there anywhere I can call for step by step help? this really *****.
    Thanks J Galloway

if I understand correctly your music is on the laptop and you want it on your ipod. So say yes to the message and the itune library from your laptop will update and fill your empty ipod. Now the intresting part if you want to upload the ipod info onto your home computer your going to need to download thrid party software cuz technicley "you cannot upload music from ipod to computer" i just had the same problem and solved it with the software "sentui" google it and check out the site its legit and easy to use. Its only a mac app so if you have a pc your on your own to find software for your needs but its prob. out there. After you upload your ipod info to your home comp itune library and it appears like normal plug in the ipod and when it asks to sync itune library with ipod click yes and you should be set. NOTE: it seems odd that during the orginal sync both your itunes library and ipod where erased, only your ipod should have erased and not the itune library.

  • Ipod won't recognize music/podcasts

When I plugged my ipod into the computer, got a message that I had to restore, which I did. Synced the ipod and thought all was good. Tried to play podcast, and there was nothing there--no music, no podcasts. According to the ipod, I have used 1.0 GB with 6.3 GB free, listed as "other". I have restored multiple times and resynced. Still nothing! Please help!

THe same thing has happened to me, have you fixed it?
    please help!

  • 3rd Gen. Ipod Touch Access To Music On An External Hard Drive

Wondering if anyone has heard of or experimented with getting your iPod touch to access music files from an external hard drive. I have a 3rd gen. 64gb touch that is full and even though I love the storage capacity of the iPod Classic, I would hate to lose the touch functionality by going to one. I listen to the majority of my music while on the road for work. What I imagined in my head would be to transfer my music libray to a portable hard drive and have my Touch connected to it where it could access it. I know you can transfer your music library to an external hard drive connected to your computer and have iTunes access it but wasn't sure if the iPod would be able to do this.
It doesn't seem like Apple will ever increase the size of the iPod Touch beyond 64gb since it looks like everyone is pushing music streaming. I guess I'm one of those people who want their music anytime and anywhere without having to have an internet connection.
    Thanks,

You can get a HD like this. It uses wifi to and an app to access the HD
