Ipods only last a few years.

The battery has recently died on both me and my wife's ipod (3rd generation -2004). Just spoken to apple care and thier response was "tough". Has anyone tried to replace the battery themselves? Very annoyed that this apple product obviously has a design flaw which gives it a limited lifespan. If I'd known at the time then I wouldn't have bought it...

Hi Doug,
like any rechargable device, the batteries do wear out, so not sure if this is a design flaw, or a known limitation of current generation rechargable batteries, my 2004 ipod still holds a charge, but obviously not as much as it did in 2004. Battery life does depend on they way its used, to get the best from any rechargable device you do need to drain it fully and recharge it on a regular basis, devices that are plugged into the wall for most of their lives do not last so long.
There are a number of companies who will either sell you a new battery or install it for you. if you choose to have a go yourself, ifixit does provide instruction (http://www.ifixit.com/Browse/iPod_Original). i have never used them for ipods so have no personal experience for these instruction, but have used them for taking my powerbook to bits.

Don't worry. If something was up, OnyX would have given you proper warnings and recommendations. On your next render, can you set the render logging to Extra per Frame Info? Also, if you don't mind, untwirl the render info and see, which parts it is processing. Either the life info reveals long file read and write times or the render log may reveal odd variations in teh per-frame render times. A common problem for instance with multi-processing are the first few frames being rendered very fast, but then a longer gap occuring inbetween because the program chokes on writing too many files at once. Similar patterns sometimes appear with network setups or - ultimately relevant for you - with RAIDs that use large cache drives. In the latter case often reducing or turning off the harddrive's internal cahe using the vendor's configuration tool can improve things...

My ipod stopped working a few years ago, it said i had to connect to itunes to restore, as i then got an iphone i never bothered to sort it, I am now trying to and hwne i connect to itunes it says it must be restored, After ive restored it nothing happens, at first it says "ipod has been restored and is restarting, it will appear in the itunes window once it has restarted" so i wait but nothing happens and eventually it comes up with the same message telling me the ipod needs to be restored?

Errors when updating leads to corrupt system files and this may be your problem. If you're using windows, connect your device to PC and run any third party app like Syncios. If it detects, you maybe in luck and try to back-up your data if possible. I hope that it won't and if doesn't, there is no other way to recover files. You should be restoring with iTunes and all data will be erased, or else your device may become unusable.

  • HT4235 HELP! I am trying to synch my ipod classic after a few years of non use of itunes. I cannot do so. Diagnostic tests, specifically Device Synch Tests report that "no ipod found".  What have I got to do please?

HELP!!!!  I am attempting to synch my ipod Classic but have not used itunes for a few years. My ipod refuses to synch & its driving me crazy as I know nothing about computers either. I have run the diagnostics, specifically the Device Synch Tests which report that "no ipod found" although it is showing up clearly in itunes itself.  So its recognized and showing me my libraries but is unrecognised when it comes to synching.  I gave tried a few tips from previous similar queries (unchecking various boxes) and nothing is working. I am using Windows 7 64. Can anybody assist please??

You could try the DFU restore method in Corrupt iPod classic.
Or visit http://www.apple.com/uk/support/contact/ to explore your support options. Is the device still in warranty?

  • My new ipod only lasts 2 hrs. when connected to my docking station ?

My new 7th. generation ipod only plays for 2 hrs. when docked to my docking station. Will Apple bring out a new docking station to overcome this as I only ever play tunes using the dock.

What is the make and model of your docking station? Shouldn't it be charging the iPod?  How is it connected? With the appropriate dock connector and lightning to 30 pin connector or via a line-in port?

  • My home wifi is available at full bars on the settings menu, but when selected it says it cannot be joined, and when it does connect, it only lasts a few seconds before disconnecting. My laptop connects to the wifi perfectly fine though. Help?

When in the Wi-Fi menu under settings, my iPod five will display the different wifi networks in range, including my home wifi network. The shown network has full bars and my laptop will connect to the network with no trouble. When the wifi on my ipod is selected though, it will show it is loading to connect, it will actually connect for five-ten or sometimes twenty seconds, and then it will disconnect. The wifi never automatically connects on my iPod5. It always has to be done manually and then does not establish a complete connection. No matter where I stand in the house, even if it is right beside the router, this happens. Sometimes when the network is chosen it refuses to connect and gives the message "Unable to Join". I've had it for a year and a half and for about the first six months it never had this problem. But then it began, and it would go through monthly cycles of working perfectly and doing what it is doing now. As of now I haven't been able to connect for three months. I'd like to think it's simply the wifi itself but mine and my sibling's laptops will connect with no trouble. It's extremely frustrating and I have no idea how to handle the problem. Please help?

Hey Saanasaana, Have you tried going into Settings>General>Reset and tapping Reset All Settings. If still no joy... Reset Network Settings and rebooting the router. If that doesn't do it, try Settings then tap the offending Wi-Fi Network, then tap Forget this Network and re-load it, as if it was a new network.
Your next options are to Restore. Connect to your iPod with your computer with the cable, and make new backups / copies of all your stuff to your computer first, then Restore from Backup. If that does not solve, Restore to New, a full restore. Note restore to new will wipe you iPod put it back to factory specs, that's why your need to make backups of everything on your iPod before you do it so you can reload your stuff back to your iPod. If the full restore does not solve you may have a hardware issue, contact your Apple store or Apple Genius Bar and set up an appointment to have your iPod evaluated. Good luck. Cheers.

  • IPod only recognized a few times per reboot

I've got a 40GB iPod connected via firewire. It's recognized by the computer itself just fine without any problems and works flawlessly as a drive.
iTunes, however, only seems to reliably recognize the iPod after a system reboot. If I eject and later reattach the iPod, iTunes only sees it again after doing this maybe two or three more times. Restating iTunes doesn't help, nor does logging out and back in. The only way to get it back in iTunes at this point is to reboot the system.
Needless to say, this is very frustrating as I take my iPod with me on my daily commute to listen to regular podcasts.
Even though I'm not really experiencing the specific problem in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716, I've been through it. My installation of Windows is rather fresh and it had this problem before I reinstalled for unrelated reasons. So please don't tell me to reinstall windows, itunes or quicktime.
I'm sick of rebooting my computer every day for something this stupid. If the system can see the **** thing reliably, why won't iTunes??

hmm... the latest update (6.0.2.23) seems like it might have actually fixed the problem. Cool .

  • Distribution certificate lasts for two years now?

According to the Apple developer documentation, each distribution certificate only lasts for one year:
"A distribution certificate is valid for one year from date of issue."
    http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#documentation/ToolsLanguages/Conceptual/ DevPortalGuide/ManaginganiOSDistributionCertificate/ManaginganiOSDistributionCer tificate.html
I just created a new distribution certificate today (in an Enterprise portal), and it seems to be valid for two years? Has Apple changed something recently?

Why don't you ask this in the Developer's forum?

  • Why do ipod touchs only last 1 year?

My best friend has as ipod and it's lasted for like two years now. I've had to buy 2 ipod's in the time she's had her's. Why arn't mine lasting as long as her's? I've heard somewhere that normal iPod touches only last 1 year.. WHY?? It's not like money grows off trees. And iPod touches arn't cheep either.. so please help. (FYI I'm having to buy my 3rd iPod touch now because my screen is all white. )

Maybe it's overheating from all the spellchecking it's required to do.
I've had mine 2.5 years and it still works great. Make sure you let the battery go real low once in a while and give it a nice full recharge. Make sure you don't drop it. Make sure you don't put it in water. Make sure you connect it to your Mac/PC once in a while, back it up, and restore it to original factory condition. the only issue I have is that the battery doesn't last as long as it used to, but it's still pretty good.

Ive had my Ipod nano for nearly 3 years and now the battery takes hours to charge and only lasts an hour at most..  do Apple replace batteries?

Apple will do a like-for-like exchange of your iPod.  Be sure to have your music backed up prior to the exchange.
