IPods OS-version-dependent?

A friend of mine just got a used iPod Nano and she tells me that when she plugs it in, an alert appears telling her she needs MacOS 10.4.8. She installed iTunes 7.6 (which is what I thought she needed)
I'm not very iPod-hip, but this doesn't sound right. Is it? Are iPods dependent on the current-at-the-time OS version?
Just to be annoying, I'm not sure which edition Nano she got.
Here's a thought. I saw that a 3G Nano s/w update came out today. Would the iPod automatically try to install the update, and might that update require 10.4, thus generating the alert (this assumes she got a 3G)? If so, is it at all hazardous to ignore the update -- and how do you do that? (Tell me there's a cancel button.)
tnx,
Jeff

The current version of iTunes is OS dependent, and not much can be done with the iPod aside from use as an external flash drive without updating or upgrading Mac OS X.

  • MP4 movies not playing on iPod with version 1.3

I have iTunes version 7.6.1.9 and iPod firmware version 1.3. I have several movies converted to MP4 format via Nero which played on the iPod just fine up until about 10 days ago. Now the MP4 movies will no longer play on the iPod, i just get a blank screen. The one movie I did convert using Handbrake to M4V format does still play on the iPod. Also I downloaded an MP4 movie from ipodarchive.com and it plays fine on iPod. All movies in all formats play fine in iTunes.
Does anyone know if there is something in one of the firmware updates which prevents the playing of MP4's converted by certain programs?
    Thanks

I found the same problem. It's not all mp4's, though; some of mine work perfectly. I think higher quality videos don't work, for some reason. Movies at 159 kbps and 640x480 don't work, though they used to. Movies at 79 kbps and 480x352 still work fine.
    Have you found any fixes/workarounds?

I have an Ipod touch version 4.2.1 and the instructions do not detail how to update to iOS 5. Can you help me with step by step instructions.

iOS 4.2.1 suggests that you may have 2nd generation Touch, which cannot be updated past iOS 4.2.1
Check http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353  for help in identifying your model. A quicker method may be to check the back casing. If your iPod has Model No.A 1288 etched into it, then it's a 2nd gen Touch.
Assuming that you are using the latest version of iTunes (today, that is 10.6.3), to check if your iPod can be updated, connect it to your iTunes and look on the Device/Summary pane. Select Check for Updates. If there is one, you will see a message telling you that and how to install it. However, if you see a message saying that your iPod is up-to-date, then it cannot be updated.

  • Ipod Touch version 4.2.1 not recognized by iTunes

All I'm doing is trying to update the songs on it. I know apps and such will no longer update, but it's ridiculous that I can't plug it in and put some songs on. The iPod Touch version is 4.2.1 and my current itunes is 11.5.1. I'm currently using Mountain Lion so 10.8.5 for the computer version.
If I need to get an earlier version of iTunes, can someone tell me how to get it on there? Do I have to get rid of the current itunes version or what?

The current version of iTunes is bacward compatible with all iPods.

  • I have iPod with version 4.2.1 but I cannot update my apps

My iPod has version 4.2.1 OS and this is reported as the latest version
However, the majority of my apps require a later version.
One in particular is my FLAC music player.
I have 8 Gig of FLAC music on my iPod which I now cannot access due to a failed update of Cappricio.
I cannot even remove the FLAC music without a factory reset.
Are there any FLAC player that will work with OS 4.2.1, or can the OS be updated or where can I get older versions of Cappricio.
Looks like Apple have left its old customers without support.
    Cheers
    Martin

I suspect you have a 2G iPod. Those can only go to iOS 4.2.1.

iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.
The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

  • How do i create an ipod/iphone version of my videos in the new itunes?

In the new version of iTunes, there is no "advanced" drop-down menu, where i can click "create ipod/iphone version" to convert the selected video into a format compatibe with my 4th gen. ipod touch. The videos are already in a mp4 format, but won't sync > itunes just says they're not compatible my ipod. I have also noticed that all the videos added to my library after the update, are being copied to "Home Videos" and the usual file location.

    Select the video. Then:
File menu -> Create New Version -> Create iPod or iPhone Version

  • My games app in ipod touch version 4.2.1 (8C148) won't open at all!

I have my ipod touch version 4.2.1(8C148). At first, I wanted to save more music in my ipod touch so I installed the latest version of itunes(10.6.1.7). I followed the rules on how to save music from forums in the internet. I made a playlist on itunes, and from my Music file I dragged my mp3's on my itune's playlist. I plugged my ipod touch and it appearred on the left side as Device. And from my playlist, I selected all and dragged them into my ipod touch.. and then click Sync below. (example: http://www.technipages.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/iTunes-Sync-button.png). After that, I also saved videos. The same procedures I did like on how to save musics. After Syncing all... when i opened a game app, it won't open. All of the game applications won't open! I don't know why. Help me!:)

Update it from iTunes on a computer as described at the bottom of this article; there isn't a Software Update option in General on iOS versions prior to 5.0. It can only be updated directly to the newest iOS release supported by the device’s hardware.
The maximum iOS version for the second generation iPod touch and the iPhone 3G is 4.2.1.
The maximum iOS version for the third generation iPod touch and original iPad is 5.1.1.

  • I have an iPod touch version 4.2.  how can I get my music from here to my computer or iPad or the cloud?

how can I get my music from my iPod touch version 4.2 to the cloud so I can listen to it on my iPad or computer? I tried a manual transfer from iTunes but that doesn't work.

    - For iTunes purchases:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
In iTunes 11 use Control+B to show the Menu bar then go to iTunes>File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
    - For other music you need a third-party program like one of those discussed here:

  • XMII version dependency

    Hi Gurus,
I have some confusion regarding xMII - SAP connectivity.
If xMII is version dependent? e.g if xMII v12. can be accessible through a particular version of SAP(say 6.4).
Do we need any special connectivity(connectors, BADI etc.) between xMII server and SAP or just installing the GUI for both will be enough?
    Thanks in Advance

I think the question should be more like - what version of SAP R/3 is accessible via xMII and not the other way round.
In my personal experience I have connected xMII (ver 11.5) to SAP R/3 4.6 b/ 4.6c and more recently ECC 6.0.
No special connectors are required as xMII uses JCO for connecting to R/3 systems and these classes are installed alongwith so many others when you install xMII, although from 12.0 there is JRA as well. Check up the xMII 12.0 help documentation for more information on that.
Does this lessen your confusion to some extent?
