IPods won't mount since system migration

I recently did a system migration using the migration assistant from my old 24" imac to a new 27" imac, both running the latest version of Snow Leopard. I have two ipod touches and neither one will now mount on the new mac. They don't show up in iTunes or in disk utility. They mounted on the old one so I know the issue is with the mac itself.
They appear to receive power from the connector but cannot communicate with the mac. Other peripherals work on the same port.
Any suggestions?

Hello bercg,
I'm sure you tried plugging them into different USB ports and using different USB cables? Have you tried resetting either iPod with it connected to your iMac?
Otherwise, work through each troubleshooting procedure described in this Apple support document as necessary.

  • 3G Clickwheel Ipod won't mount after update to ITunes 7.0

I recently updated to iTunes 7 and ever since my iPod won't mount. I can't see it on my desktop, and iTunes says the iPod is corrupt. I checked to make sure the Firewire port is working, and as far as I can tell, it is. I have tried to connect the iPod using both USB and Firewire, with the same result. I have also tried another Firewire cord, and that didn't work either.
I don't think the iPod is corrupt, because it was exactly after I updated to 7.0.1 that it stopped mounting. I thought 7.0.2 would resolve this issue, but it has not. The iPod works as it should when not connected to my computer.
I do NOT want to reload the iPod to factory settings, because over 1900 songs would be lost (my hard drive crashed last year, and this is the only place I have of many of these songs). This seems to be a known problem with the new version, but I don't know how to resolve it. Any suggestions?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I have the identical problem with my Ipod & Imac. I haven't updated my Ipod for awhile, and although it works just fine independently, once I plug it into either my Imac or Ibook, the computer will not recognize it so I can't add new songs. The ipod doesn't show up in ITunes, in System Profiler, Disk Utility. I'm using Itunes 7.02 and judging from some other newsgroups I have read, there are many Ipod owners with this problem. I hope Apple gets it fixed soon.

  • IPod won't mount in iTunes

    Hello there,
I have a 20gb iPod that's nearly 3 years old & my PC is running Windows XP Professional with SP2. And I've got the latest version of iTunes (7.4.3).
Recently my iPod started behaving strangely, skipping during songs sometimes, and sometimes hanging for several seconds whilst playing.
Anyway, my big problem now is that the iPod won't mount in iTunes & iTunes hangs for ages when the iPod is connected.
The iPod comes up in Windows Explorer as a Removeable Drive called "Apple iPod". This leads me to believe that I may have accidentally put it into disc mode?
All the troubleshooting advice I've read suggests that if I can only get iTunes to recognise it, then iTunes should then automatically load the required software on to the iPod & everything will be hunky dory. That sounds all very well & good but iTunes is not currently seeing the iPod so it's not doing that.
As I've said, the iPod comes up in Windows Explorer, but if I do anything with it, even just right-clicking on it for example, Windows Explorer hangs as well.
    Grrrrrrrr!!
I know it is not a cable problem or a PC problem as I have tried several different cables & 3 different PCs, all with the same results.
    Please help!

I'm having a similar problem with my sons 3 generation Ipod Nano.
When I plug in my sons Ipod into my Apple G5 running OS X Version 10.4.11 and Apple Itunes 9.0.2... I too can't mount the Ipod on to Itunes.
What I found is that my son plugged his Ipod into a Windows laptop and reformatted his Ipod by accident for MS Windows... now my son is only 10 and didn't know what he was doing and would admit he did it.
How I found out was when I plugged in the two Ipods and hit Get Info
His Ipod Nano had: FORMAT: MS-DOS File System (FAT32)
and my Ipod Nano had: FORMAT: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
I asked him and he admitted that... that's what he did... this is after 5 hours of trying to mount his Ipod.
Now here's the problem: His music and my music is all in the same account on the same computer (That being my G5)
My G5 running the most recent version of Itunes 9.0.2 recognizes all of our other Ipods except his which just shows up on the desktop of my computer... BUT DOES NOT DOW UP IN ITUNES UNDER DEVICES like all the other Ipods.
What I think I need to do is re format his Ipod Nano for Mac... Only problem is Itunes 9.0.2 doesn't allow that to happen.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks

  • Connected to a different computer and now ipod won't mount

I've searched through the discussions and I can't find anyone who has had this specific problem, but apologies in advance if this issue has already been addressed somewhere I didn't see..
My ipod and ibook have been working perfectly fine together for 6 months. Yesterday I connected my ipod to a friends ibook so we could listen to some music off my ipod on his itunes. He disconnected it without ejecting it first (I wonder if this caused the problem although I've done it before by mistake and had no major problems) and now my ipod won't mount on my desktop.
It shows up in the system profiler and in ipod updater it says ipod connected but unable to mount. When I plug it in I get two error messages saying "You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read" and "A disk attempting to mount -unknown has failed verification or has failed" When I open the disk utility and click repair in the first aid it says "Invalid BTH length" "ipod needs to be repaired"
The ipod still plays perfectly fine when not attached to the computer.
I know the simple solution is to restore the ipod but I'm VERY reluctant to do this as I have some music on my ipod that I can't reload because I didn't keep it in my itunes to save hard drive space and I've just moved countries and the hard copies are back home.
Any advice would be much appreciated!

    unable to mount
that is a hard drive error msg, as are the other msgs you listed... not a good sign.....
you are going to need to restore/reformat the ipod:

  • IPod no longer mounts since Leopard upgrade

My iPod no longer mounts since I upgraded to Leopard. I'm using a USB 2 port that's part of a third party PCI card I installed myself. Used to work fine before the Mac OS upgrade.
If I reboot with the iPod already plugged in, it mounts.
    Help?

Forgot to mention that I had tried those:
Authorize your purchases from an administrator account
    -> Yep, I'm the admin
Authorize using the correct account name
-> Nothing changed- I am only authorizing my devices, and only use my account on the machine. Definitely using the right account name.
Turn Off User Account Controls (Windows Vista and Windows 7 Only)
-> Did this a long, long time ago, so definitely not the issue.
    Remove the SC Info folder
-> This was the only new thing that I had seen yesterday when I tried it, and went through these steps, to no avail. Still exactly the same problem. I closed iTunes, deleted the folder, rebooted and relaunched iTunes and synced the device. Same thing.
The problem is the computer IS authorized, and I can sync one device, but not the other. No problem with iPhone 4- just iPod Touch, 3rd gen. It seems to be in a weird state.
One thing would lead me to believe it's a PC/iTunes problem, but then it is only with one device and not the other. Hard to point to the root of the problem. I just don't want to lose the data on the iPod- I've done a lot of work on it.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

  • Narrowing down "iPod won't mount" problem

Regarding the "iPod won't mount" problem that has been posted a number of times: is anyone having this problem with a USB connection or just with a Firewire connection?
I'm using Firewire and can't get my iPod to mount. I don't have a USB connector for the iPod and I thought I'd do a little research on the problem before I go buy a USB connector.

My 4th generation Ipod would not mount with the firewire but worked fine with USB.

  • External drive and ipod won't mount after latest security update

I just downloaded the latest security update on my powerbook, and now my lacee external hard-drive won't mount. I ran disc permissions and still nothing. My ipod charges from the firewire port but doesn't mount either. The hard-drive mounts fine on my dome imac which appears to have the latest updates as well. Could it be a problem with the firewire port itself or something to do with the security update? Thanks for the help.

Your PowerBook is hurting my friend. Check "About this Mac" and see if the memory reported is the actual memory you have installed on the machine. I had a PB that had 1GB installed but the machine only read 256. Ended up needing a logic board replacement. Check http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303173 to see if it applies to you.
Unplug all devices from the PB, leaving only power connected.
If it everything seems cool, then you'll want to start up in "single user mode". Restart the PB and hold down the  + s (apple and s) keys until you get a black display with white characters. Once you get the command prompt signified by a # character. At that point type in the following at the prompt
    fsck -yf
    then hit your return key
As the system check your HD, notice any errors that are displayed. After it is done it will inform you of any modifications, or if it thinks everything is cool.
    then again, type in
    fsck -yf
    then hit your return key
You'll want to have run the fsck -yf utility a total of 3 times. Hopefully at the end everything will be good (No errors) "* appears to be OK".
    In any case, type in
    reboot -n
    then hit your return key
Your PB will reboot. After the OS has loaded, plug in your FW devices and see if they mount. Either way post back with results.

  • IPod won't mount on desktop/in iTunes...updater useless

I have a second generation iPod (scroll wheel/row of 4 buttons), and iTunes 6.0.4 running on a dp G4 500 with Mac OS 10.2.8. Suddenly my iPod won't appear on the desktop or in iTunes when I plug it into the dock. I've tried different FW ports, etc. and nothing happens.
I ran the iPod Updater 2006-01-10 (v. 2.1 I assume) and it said my iPod was connected and was waiting for it to be recognized. Then it just hangs and nothing ever happens.
I can't even get an option to Restore the iPod let alone Update it. I've followed the instructions on resetting the iPod as well but nada.
Would iTunes 6.0.4 have anything to do with it? I just installed it and it may be the cause. Does anyone know where I can find iTunes 6.0.3 installer? It's not on Apple's site or VersionTracker.com.
    G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   dual-processor 500

UPDATE: I brought my iPod to an Apple retailer yesterday and they were able to get it to mount on a Mac there using the Dock Connector to USB 2.0 cable. They let me borrow it to try it at home and it worked! The iPod mounted on the desktop and in iTunes with no problems.
I even tried plugging the iPod into the FW Dock afterward and it's working again like there wasn't ever any problem. Somehow just getting it to mount seems to have fixed the problem so hopefully this info will be of some use to someone else.

  • IPod won't mount on new Mac Pro

I just got a new Mac Pro that came with Snow Leopard. After getting everything setup I plugged in my iPod shuffle and it won't mount when plugged into either of the 2 front USB ports or any of the 3 back USB ports. When I plug it into the USB port on the keyboard it mounts and I can sync it through iTunes. When plugged into the front two ports the green charging light comes on, but it doesn't mount. The back 3 ports just cause the iPod to blink the green charging light quickly, it isn't a solid green.
I don't know if this is a Snow Leopard problem or the Mac Pro. The iPod was working perfectly with my G5 running Leopard.
    Any ideas?
    david.

I just don't get computers sometimes (even after being a software developer for over 25 years).
I had restarted the computer multiple times while installing other software but the iPod would not mount.
I took your suggestion to try another USB device and the only other device I had was a Canon scanner. I installed the drivers which required another restart. And the scanner worked and now the iPod works on all of the USB ports. It is mounted in iTunes and I can sync it on any port.
I checked the console logs files and didn't find anything unusual before it didn't work and nothing different now that the iPod mounts.
    David.

  • 2G iPod won't mount and CD icon appears?

Hi I have a 20 gig 2G ipod that I got from the battery replacement program 3 years ago. I am unable to sync it with iTunes. When I connect it to my mac it won't mount and the CD icon appears on the iPod screen. When I unplug it the icon is still on the screen after few minutes I get the Cd icon with the check mark, then it returns to normal operation. When I press play the song plays for 20 30 sec. and then it freezes.
How can I reset the iPod?
    Thanks in advance

    Hello!
What kind of iPod do you have? (new one?)
Are you using a mac or a pc?
If your using windows pc, check and see if you have a 6 pin connector (FireWire) if not then thats probably why it is not charging!
If your using a mac then it should charge automatically.
Refer to the online support and type in the search area:
iPod(with dock connector) user's guide (manual)
Refer to page 45 Battery charging!
Let me know if I can help in any other way!

  • Old ipod won't mount to new macbook pro

Hello, I just set up my new MacBook Pro, and when I try to connect my ipod, it won't mount either to the desktop or into iTunes. the screen of the ipod says "do not disconnect" just like with the old computer... and I transferred my account and music and settings from the old one to the new one.
    anyone have any ideas?
    thanks,
    Bruce
Oh yeah... it's a 40 Gig with a scroll wheel... not sure the "name" of the generation, it says "copyright 2003" on the back.
and my new shuffle works just fine with the new computer...

Which version of iTunes does your new MacBook have? You will probably want to update it if it isn't 9.2. Do that first. Also, restart your MacBook book. That will make sure that everything else is working properly as well (I'm thinking USB ports).
If your touch is still not recognized, you will need to make sure that Apple Mobile Device Services is running properly on the MacBook. See this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747
And if you are close to an Apple store and tired of playing with it, make an appointment with Genius and take your MacBook and touch in and let Apple fix it.

  • 3rd Gen iPod won't mount via firewire - any ideas?

After working for a brief spell when I first hooked it up, the progress bar would freeze while I was trying to copy files across to the HD. I unplugged, reset the iPod and tried it in my old clamshell iBook, where it worked fine again.
I tried resetting the PMU on the Macbook, but this only made things worse - the iPod now refuses to mount, despite still working fine on my old iBook. Tried resetting PRAM too but no difference.
Do I have a duff port? Or could it be an issue with 10.4.6 on the Macbook?

I tried a JVC digital handycam while on the phone to AppleCare, which it recognised in iChat, and showed a live picture in iMovie. I don't know how I would check for consistency with this device, but it seemed to be working ok.
I'm connecting via a dock but have also tried connecting direct - all official Apple cables. No difference.
I'm now noticing new behaviour. When I plug the iPod in it mounts very briefly, triggers iTunes, then unmounts. It stays charging from the Macbook's firewire port, but the 'do not disconnect' disappears and I can use it as if it was only connected to AC. This is reproducible, and is the same if I turn off the launch iTunes option.
Once again, it works flawlessly with the old iBook.
I'm almost tempted to go down to the Apple Store in Regent St. and plug my iPod into a Macbook there to rule out software - unless you have any other suggestions?
    Thanks for your continued support.

  • After 10.4.7 update iPod won't mount

  • 5th gen iPod won't mount on G5 and screws with keyboard!

Is it since the itunes upgrades? I don't know, but I only use my iPOd rarely and so was surprised on plugging it into the computer that it didn't mount on the desktop
restarted: not only does it not mount but the keyboard+mouse has become unresponsive - seriously weird!
    Checked all cable conections
    had to force shut down
restarted: keyboard works but intermittantly, repaired permissions. Restarted - no change al locked up
    Forced shut down
Removed ipod - restarted -everything is fine
except the iPOd which is totally unresponsive and is ON with the 'do not disconnect' sign
I guess it'll stay that way til the batterydies - I hope it isn't completely done for!
    any ideas?

Did a search in Apple knowledge base and

    Solved it

  • Firewire card reader won't mount since 10.4.9 update

If anybody knows of a resolution to this issue, I'd surely appreciate it if you would share that knowledge!
I have two SanDisk Firewire ImageMate Compact Flash card readers (model #SDDR-80 Rev:B). They've been very reliable (and fast) - have had them for over 3 years now. Never had a problem with them or their interoperability with either of my Macs (I also own a PowerBook G4 17" (1.67Ghz).
The other day (4/17), I installed the 10.4.9 (Combined) update on my PowerMac without a hitch. My card reader was connected at the time, and I quickly found out that the reader would not mount on my desktop after the update, but would appear in the System Profiler as "Unknown Device".
Just for the "fun of it", I installed the same update on my PowerBook, repaired permissions, then attached my other card reader (same model). Same friggin' thing!
A glutton for punishment, I disconnected the card reader, reinstalled Tiger from scratch (Erase and Install), and applied the 10.4.9 (Combined) update as before. To my utter disgust, I got the same behavior.
Now there's no doubt in my mind that the problem here is with Apple's 10.4.9 update, and that I'll likely be downloading 2GB's of images via a very slow USB connection directly from my camera until Apple releases yet another update, but I thought I'd give all the Apple geeks out there a shot at this first - you know, just for the fun of it.
    Thanks in advance!

    Abbott1,
As you pointed out, I've done a little detective work here already - as I do with any problem I've have with my Macs. I find that in virtually every case, I'll resolve the issue myself - which is why this is the first time I've posted to Apple's discussion board.
You see, once upon a time, I provided 2nd tier Mac technical support in addition to acting as a liason to the engineers for a huge printer company whose name begins with an "X". I've been working with OS X since it was beta, and have been honing my Mac "detective skills" ever since. Now, I realize that I sound as though I'm tooting my own horn here, but I wanted to point out that I'm not another Mac newbie who just made the switch.
In my experience, taking this issue to Apple's Genius Bar will have only one of two outcomes - they will either deny the problem is Apple's, or they'll tell me to wait for an update - neither of which resolves the issue itself.
As it happens, I may very well end up showing the problem to one of the guys at the Genius Bar anyway, as I'm having an unrelated problem with the "G" key on my PowerBook - it has decided that it no longer wishes to reside with the other keys on the keyboard, and keeps trying to extricate itself just to prove it.
I knew it was a shot in the dark when I posted the original question, but I was hoping that some genius out there would beat Apple to the punch and have figured out a solution to the problem that didn't require me purchasing new card readers to replace perfectly good ones. I sure hope this problem doesn't exist in Leopard.
The card readers don't require any 3rd party software - there are no drivers, firmware updates, etc. - they define "plug-n-play".
    Thanks for posting!
