  • IPodService Module has encountered a problem and needs to close

After allowing Windows XP to install Service Pack 3, I started getting the error message "iPodService Module has encountered a problem and needs to close" whenever I plugged my iPod 60 Gb into my PC. I spent months, literally, reading and asking and trying things before stumbling onto a fix that worked. I got the hint from a thread in some forum, then verified it with the software manufacturers. Apparently, Windows XP SP3 writes a bunch of garbage entries into your registry, and in the process corrupts some of the existing entries (thanks a lot, Microsoft, I mean really, thanks just too much. That service pack was soooo helpful). Included in the corrupted entries are a LOT of the ones used by Norton Antivirus 2008. This causes Norton to somehow prevent the device manager from recognizing anything (device manager window comes up blank) and apparently also causes iTunes to be unable to recognize the iPod. Here is the fix I used (a hybrid of several sets of instructions from various sources, including Symantec). I don't know if every step is crucial, I just know it worked.
    1) Uninstall Norton Antivirus 2008
    2) Use the registry editor (Run: regedit) to locate and delete every line beginning with the string $%&'( BE CAREFUL-don't delete or change anything else !
    3) Reinstall Norton Antivirus 2008 and update it using Live Update
    4) Uninstall iTunes
    5) Download and install latest version of iTunes from Apple
    6) Connect iPod (iTunes recognized it at this point)
    7) Use iTunes to update iPod software
I read a lot of posts from a lot of frustrated people experiencing this or similar problems. I hope this helps at least some of them.

Hey everyone... been watching these threads closely because, I too have this issue.
One question though... what if you don't use Norton??? I can't possibly believe that everyone with this issue uses Norton... I use AVG. When I search my registry, I get no results.
Does anyone have any input? Everything I read mentions Norton. This problem seems to have gone on forever, I can't believe it hasn't been solved eith by Apple, Microsoft or both.

  • IPodService Module crashing

Since today I've had a problem with my iTunes, were everytime I connect my iPod (Photo) to the computer, an error box pops up saying there's something wrong wtih the iPodService Module, and just crashes.
    Error signature -
    szAppName : iPodService.exe szAppVer : 7.2.0.35
    szModName : iPodService.exe szModVer : 7.2.0.35 offset : 00026979
Files included in error - C:\DOCUME~1\Shaun\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERf9d8.dir00\iPodService.exe.mdmp
    C:\DOCUME~1\Shaun\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERf9d8.dir00\appcompat.txt
The problem ONLY happens when my iPod is connected either before starting iTunes, or after having started it.
Any help to get my iTunes uploading to the iPod again is greatly appreciated.

I’ve noticed others having this problem but have not seen and easy fix. One guy went and cleaned up his registry. I don’t think I should have to do that.
If you Device Manager is currently still blank, and the Symantec fix did not work for you, then that may be your best option for getting the iPod syncing again.
For the manual registry-editing technique, see the following Microsoft document:
Device Manager and Network Connections may be blank after you install Windows XP Service Pack 3
(If you can get your Device Manager displaying properly, the iPod Service Module crash should also go away.)

  • IPodService Module Crash on iTunes startup

Since upgrading to iTunes 10 iTunes does not auto open when i connect my 3GS iphone. as soon as I manually start the program a pop up appears stating that iPodService Module (32-bit) has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Luckily the sync to the phone will actually continue though.
    Error Signature info as below
    AppName: ipodservice.exe
    AppVer: 10.0.0.68
    ModName: ntdll.dll
    ModVer: 5.1.2600.5755
    Offset: 0001b21a

    Too bad I didn't see PapaPie's message.
I had upgraded to iTunes 10 a couple of weeks back and had gotten the iPodService module crash each time on restarting iTunes (or connecting my iphone). However my iphone continued to sync inspite of the crash.
So when 4.1 became available, I decided to do the upgrade. And ended up with a bricked phone.
On seeing PapaPie's message I went to the Apple Store and they restored the phone (to 4.1) using an existing computer but that wiped out all data.
However, I was able to connect it to iTunes 10 on my laptop again and do a restore to recover everything. And my iPhone is 4.1.
So - main problem (iphone bricked) was solved.
But I am still getting the iPodService crash each time I start iTunes 10 or connect my iphone.
I am running a Lenovo T400 with XP Pro SP3 and I did get an iPodService install error during the iTunes 10 install. I have tried with my Firewall and AV disabled (both Symantec) and reinstalling iTunes but there's still a problem.
In my services.msc (Run->services.msc) console, I still can't start ipodservice. Eventviewer shows a problem.

  • IPodService Module error

When I start iTunes v10, this is the error message I get: "iPodService Module (32-bit) has encountered a problem and needs to close". iTunes then starts up fine. But does anyone know how I can solve the problem - and get rid of the message?

    Give this a shot:
Go into Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
    Remove these applications:
    1. Apple Software Update
    2. Apple Mobile Device Support
    3. iPod for Windows (this may or may not exist, either way, it's not needed so we can remove it)
    4. iTunes
    5. QuickTime
    Restart the computer
Download & Install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
Launch the Utility: Start > Programs > Windows Install Clean Up
Select any of the above mentioned applications, and click Remove
    Restart the computer again
Download & install iTunes again from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

  • IPodService Module Crashes

Please, can anyone help me with this issue? It happened yesterday but I am not able to determine what it's really about. I'm using Windows XP and I have an 30GB 5G iPod.
First of all, iPod is recognized by my computer. You can see the iPod in My Computer and you can access files on it. When I start iTunes to manage the music on my iPod, a window suddenly comes in saying "iPodService Module has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
More details about the error: szAppName: iPodService.exe szAppVer: 7.0.2.16 szModName: iPodService.exe szModVer: 7.0.2.16 offset:00026332.
Did anyone experience such a problem? Can anyone help me? I've already reinstalled iTunes few times and formatted the iPod. It is completely useless if I can't copy my music and videos onto it.
Is there a way to contact Apple Support via e-mail and send them the error's MiniDump information?

"iPodService Module has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
let's get a crash log, and send it to the Apple engineers for a look.
Typically, you'll need to configure Dr. Watson on your PC in order to generate crash logs. Windows start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return. At the prompt in the command line window that comes up, type in
    drwtsn32 -i
    And hit return.
This will create crash logs in Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\. There'll usually be a file in here called "drwtsn32.log"
prior to collecting the iPod Service Module crash log, delete any existing crash logs in there. (we want to make sure we send the correct crash log.)
Generate the crash, collect the crash log, and and send it as an attachment to this email address.
in the email to Roy, be sure to include the following information:
    - A link to the thread on Apple Discussions where the issue is being discussed
    - The username you are using in the thread
    - The version of iTunes you are using or trying to use
    - the version of Windows you are using (mention service packs)

  • IPodService Module failed under Windows XP SP3

Greetings. Following the install of Win SP3, my iPodService Module fails.
The error is: iPodService Module has encountered a problem and needs to close.
I’ve tried restarting it, and that didn’t work.
I'm running the latest version of Itunes. Have tried reinstalling and it still fails. Symantec’s site says the registry was affected during the SP3 install and has an EXE file to fix. That didn’t work.
I’ve noticed others having this problem but have not seen and easy fix. One guy went and cleaned up his registry. I don’t think I should have to do that.
Has anybody found a fix for this?
    Thank you,
    Steve

If you Device Manager is currently still blank, and the Symantec fix did not work for you, then that may be your best option for getting the iPod syncing again.

  • IPodService module crash when iTunes 10 is in installation process

OS: Win XP pro with service pack 3 32bit
iPodService module crash when iTunes 10 is in installation process. System says that they can't run module. iTunes is run but work incorrect (for example I can't postpone my purchases from the phone to iTunes). I think that the problem of incompatibility of iPodService module with Servise Pack 3.

I am having the same problem. I am running Windows XP SP3. I got the same message about not being able to start the iPodService. It offered me the chance to ignore the problem so I did. Big mistake. iTunes seemed to work ok until I tried to upgrade to OS 4.1 on my iPhone. Apparently the service was needed for that because the ugrade failed and my iPhone is completely hosed. I can't use it at all.
I uninstalled iTunes 10 and tried to find iTunes 9.2.1 on the Apple site but can not find it anywhere. I can only find the Mac version. I found the Windows version of 9.1.1 iTunes. So I downloaded and installed it.
When I started iTunes 9.1.1 it complained that the library file was created with a later version of iTunes (makes sense because I had version 10 installed). So I deleted all the itl files. This blew away my library of course which ***** but I figured I could recreate it.
So when I hooked my iPhone up, I tried to do a restore on it so I could get my iPhone going again. No luck. I got a message saying that it rquires at least iTunes 9.2.1.
So now I am COMPLETELY SCREWED. My iPhone is dead in the water. My iTunes library is gone. And I see no way forward.
iTunes 9.1.1 won't work for restoring my dead iPhone
iTunes 9.2.1 for windows cannot be found anywhere on the apple site as far as I an tell. (would love to be proven wrong on this!)
iTunes 10 won't install on my machine.
I looked at the system event messages in windows XP. In the application events I see:
Faulting application ipodservice.exe, version 10.0.0.68, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.5755, fault address 0x0001b21a.
    and
Product: iTunes -- Error 1920. Service 'iPod Service' (iPod Service) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.
In the System events I see:
The iPod Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.
In the security events I see no errors or warnings, just info messages. None seem to be related to the iPhone or iTunes.
I disabled my Symantec Firewall and Antivirus. Did not seem to help the iTunes install. I'm gonna try again just to make sure

  • IPodService Module (32-bit) has encountered a problem and needs to close...

Upgrading to version 10 of iTunes, I find that the iPod service will not start (neither by iTunes nor by services.msc). This would not be a big deal if the previous version were available for download, but as it is it renders my iPods fairly useless. I do have a copy of version 8 available if everything else fails.
I have uninstalled the programs, turned off the anti-virus and reinstalled from two different downloads, but the service will not start.

I have encountered the same problem related to iPodService.exe v10.0.0.68, also running WinXP SP3.
I experimented a bit and found a workaround, simply using the old iPodService.exe from v9.2.1.4. It seems to work fine so far.
You can do it as follows:
    1. With iTunes v9.2.1.4 installed, make a copy of the folder "Program Files\iPod".
    2. Install iTunes v10.0.0.68 (confirm/ignore errors related to iPodService.exe).
    3. Delete (or rename) the folder "iPod" in "Program Files" and rename the folder "Copy of iPod" (or whatever you named it) created in step 1 back to "iPod"
iTunes now uses the old iPodService.exe.
It works with all my devices (several generations of nano, classic, and iPhone 3), but I don't know if the new devices released yesterday will also work.
This may be a workaround, but we still have to wait for Apple to really fix this issue.
(BTW, I routinely uninstall Bonjour and disable the Apple Mobile Device service after every update.)

  • Ipod service module (32 bit)

I've tried to install itunes version 9.0, 4 times and each time a window appears telling me 'ipodservice module (32 bit) has encountered a problem and must close'. Also itunes is unable to recognise my nano ipod. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling 4 times as i've already said to no avail. please help.

In that case we'd better check for malware. (Adware using the contextplus engine can do this to an XP PC.)
The next thing I'd check for is malware. (A number of different varieties of malware attack that Key in order that they can run on startup on an infected PC.)
Try downloading and installing the free trial version of Malwarebytes. Update the Malwarebytes definitions and run a scan of the PC.
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Does the Malwarebytes scan pick up any infections? If so, what does it call them?

  • Ipod Service Module Error

So I was trying to plug in my 2nd generation Ipod nano into my Windows XP and open Itunes to download some music. However, my Ipod doesn't appear in the left menu of Itunes at all as if the computer doesn't recognize it at all. Then an error screen pops up telling me: "iPodService Module has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I've been trying everything, including re-installing the newest version of Itunes and looking if the Ipod service is on but nothing works. I even changed the service to automatic nevertheless every time I plug in my Ipod, the same error screen shows, making it impossible to access my Ipod from my Itunes.
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm, well I would make sure that Norton has been completely removed from your system using the tool provided by Symantec in the article below.

  • "ipodservice" crashes in a new version of iTunes 7.1.0.59

I have been using iTunes with my 2GB ipod Nano for about 4 month. Couple weeks ago I have upgraded iTunes to version 7.1.0.59. After that I have not been able to sync my ipod with iTunes. The moment I connect my ipod to my laptop via (USB) I am getting the error message "iPodService Module has encountered a problem and needs to close". Then I see Windows XP opening ipod as filesystem and showing ipod directory structure. Any suggestions on how the problem can be fixed will be greatly appreciated. I have tried removing and installing itunes with no success.
    Thanks,
    Igor

Yes I have tried installing 7.1.1.5 and still have the same problem. I tried calling support and initial response was "it is Windows XP SP2 problem". After I asked for a supervisor I got another tech on the line who spent 1 1/2 hours with me on the phone formatting ipod, deinstalling and reinstalling all Apple apps as well as renaming drives. Nothing helped. He said he would file an issue with Apple engineering team. I hope they will come up with something. It is very unfortunate that I already has killed so much of my time trying to troubleshoot this issue.
