IPS mode with IDSM-2 module on Cat6K

Hi,
I have installed the IDSM-2 module on the Catalyst 6509 switch, now I was refering to the configuration guide for IPS 6.0 there are multiple modes I can configure like inline, inline vlan pair, Promiscuous & vlan group mode.. so I'm thinking which one would be the best solution...
The catalyst 6509 is acting as the CORE/Distribution with multiple Vlan's (around 20 vlans) configured, and customer wants the IPS to be deployed in such a way that it covers the traffic from all the vlans..
Also note that there is a redundant Cat6509 switch which also has got the IDSM-2 module installed, so can these both IDSM-2 modules be installed in active/standby or active/active combination...
can someone through some lights on the same please...
Regards
Vijay.

A sensor can enter bypass mode for several reasons, including, but not limited to:
1) Analysis Engine reconfiguration
2) Global  Correlation updates
3) Daily Signature DB self purg
4) sensorApp failure
Most of these reasons are benign. I have written Supportability Enhancement CSCtg69012 so that each bypass log will show the reason for entering bypass mode.
The bug is available via the CCO Bug Toolkit: http://tools.cisco.com/Support/BugToolKit/action.do?hdnAction=searchBugs.
You may review the bug and click on the "Save Bug" button at the bottom of the page to receive email updates as changes are made to the bug's state.
To fully diagnose your issue, I suggest opening a TAC case where we will request a "show tech," including debug level logs. This will allow us to see what is triggering the sensor to enter bypass mode.
Thank you,

  • Diverting traffic to IDSM for inline IPS mode

I have a catalyst 6500 swtich containing FWSM and IDSM-2 module. Vlan 1000 is the outside interface for the fwsm to which all bussiness servers are mapped (vlan 900, inside interface of fwsm).
I want to inline IPS all the traffic going to these bussiness servers.
I have no issue with IPS configuration.
Could you please guide me with a configuration for 6500 switch for diverting this traffic.
I can provide 6500 configs if required.
    An example would be appreciated.

I'm not sure if this is relevant to your situation, but here is how I have a gateway 6K switch set up with an external 4255 IPS device. You should be able to substitute the IDMS2 though.
    Internet -> port 1/2 Vlan 5 -> port 3/1 Vlan 5 -> 4255 vlan pair to -> port 3/2 Vlan 2 -> MSFC Route Module -> rest of vlans internal...
What I am doing in bringing my uplink in on a physical port that is in Vlan 5. I put one side of my IPS sensor into Vlan 5. These two ports are the only ports in Vlan 5. The IPS sensor port is vlan paired through the sensor to a port in Vlan 2. From this point, my MSFC route module has virtual interfaces for Vlan 2 and all of the rest of my internal Vlans. There is no route entry for Vlan 5, it is a pure switching vlan.
What I like about this setup is that the IPS is transparent. If I have a problem with my IPS device or if I am doing an image upgrade, I can move the vlan for port 1/2 into Vlan 2 and logically bypass the IPS device...taking it out of inline without having to change anything else in the switch config and only having to wait for the spanning tree to converge.
For the IDSM2, since the ports are trunk ports, you'd want to set the native vlan to the target vlan of each port and set the allowed vlans to just the target vlan of each port (ports 7 & 8).
    Hope this is useful,
    Scott

  • Configuring IDSM-2 Promiscuous Mode with MLS IP IDS

I am having a problem configuring promiscuous mode with an IDSM-2 running 5.0(3)S181.0 in a 6509 with Sup 720 running IOS 12.2(18)SXD4. I am running router interfaces without VLANs so I have created an extended access list with a 'permit ip any any' and configured this on my interfaces with 'mls ip ids access-list-name'. I configured 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 1 capture' and 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 2 capture', and because of the caution note on page 14-12 of 78-16127-01 I also configured 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 1 capture allowed-vlan 1-4094' and 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 2 capture allowed-vlan 1-4094'. After that I can see the output counters rising in 'show 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 1 traffic' and 'show 'intrusion-detection module x data-port 2 traffic'. I can configure the IDSM-2 using the VMS management center, and I added my sensor to security monitor and set the level down to informational, but I don't even see any events or even the start-up informational message. Anyone have any idea what I missed?

  • Ace module in bridged mode with client nat

Could someone confirm whatever a NAT is supported for ACE-20 module, please?
Let me to explain technical details.
I do need to convert working CSM(SLB) config to ACE configuration and I am not quite sure
if the configuration below is correct. ACE module should be configured in bridge mode with two
vlans - vlan 36 (client) and vlan 436 (server) - bridged with interface bvi 36.
NAT on ACE configurad as "nat dynamic 1025 vlan 436" into corresponding
    "policy-map type loadbalance"
Could you check two parts of configs and advise me if the ACE config is
properly converted from CSM and will be working in the same way (especialy for NAT).
    Thank you in advance.

    Hello F.Makarenko-
You will want to use PAT while you do nat, so change the natpool configuration to this:
       nat-pool 1025 10.36.3.100 10.36.3.100 netmask 255.255.255.0 pat
You also need to apply the nat like this:
    policy-map multi-match IFVLAN36-POLICY
    class WEBMAIL-80
        appl-parameter http advanced-options HTTP_ADV_OPT
        loadbalance policy WEBMAIL-80
        loadbalance vip inservice
        loadbalance vip icmp-reply active
        nat dynamic 1025 vlan 436
      class WEBMAIL-443
        appl-parameter http advanced-options HTTP_ADV_OPT
        loadbalance policy WEBMAIL-443
        loadbalance vip inservice
        loadbalance vip icmp-reply active
        nat dynamic 1025 vlan 436
If you are going to build out a lot of classes, you can instead do source nat like this:
    policy-map multi-match IFVLAN36-POLICY
    class WEBMAIL-80
        appl-parameter http advanced-options HTTP_ADV_OPT
        loadbalance policy WEBMAIL-80
        loadbalance vip inservice
        loadbalance vip icmp-reply active
    class WEBMAIL-443
        appl-parameter http advanced-options HTTP_ADV_OPT
        loadbalance policy WEBMAIL-443
        loadbalance vip inservice
        loadbalance vip icmp-reply active
    class class-default
        nat dynamic 1025 vlan 436

  • IPS 4270 with 6509 VSS in Promiscous mode

    Dear all,
I am trying to figure out how to configure 2x IPS 4270 in promiscous mode with Cisco 6509 VSS:
I have attached the LLD core datacenter design including the IPS physical placement in my network.
The following points are my concerns in this design:
Shall I connect each of the IPS 4270's into VSS Chassis A and B, or I keep each IPS connected to different Chassis? (considering the SPAN port configuration on VSS and if I could encounted Asymmetric routing issue or not).
Can I use Etherchannel in either case (keep in mind it's promiscous mode), that means the destination interface on the VSS will be an Etherchannel interface, but does the Cisco IPS 4270 support Etherchannel while in promiscous mode?
I really appreciate your input on this matter guys.
    Cheers
    Mohammed Khair

    Hi,
1.You can Connect the each IPS into Chasis A and B  That is Not  aproblem .But While Configuring the RSPAN Monitor From A to B and B to A should monitor the both vlans ( i mean RSAPN A and B also vice versa in your config then it will give both out put even connectivity between IPs and chasisi one fails also)
2.IPS Supports the Etherchannel while in promiscous mode as well.

  • Msi Big Bang Xpower II can only run with 3 memory modules?

Hello there! I've just got my new system up and running. But it cant boot with 4 memory modules when there is a module in slot 7? I have a 4x8gb kit from corsair (CMP32GX3M4X1600C10), and a Msi Big Bang Xpower II..
When i start it, it just shows me the debug code "67" which is "Late Cpu Initialization" according to the "User Guide".. It stays there, for about 15 seconds, then it shuts down, and does the same, over and over..
Atm, i'm running with 3 modules, and there's no problems at all! I've testet ALL memory blocks, in another computer, and they run just fine..
    What should i do?

Also, what cpu, bios version , memory type etc
Make sure the mem mods are in the proper slots for tri channel operation.
    >>Posting Guide<<
If everything comes up clean, update to the most recent bios. Only do this if your computer is stable in bios. IE You are only having crashes in windows etc.

  • PowerMac G4 having problems with new RAM modules!

    dear all,
I’ve recently got 2 512 MB Ram module from a British eBay dealer, to be used on 2 different but very similar PowerMac G4 AGP Graphichs 400 MHz machines.
I installed the first module in my father’s Mac, and it works fine, no problems of any sort. Then, a few days later, I installed the other module in my PowerMac, and immediately it started behaving very erratically: some programs didn’t open at all and others crashed with no warning, I tried to run Rember but it soon get stuck. I assumed the Ram module was faulty, emailed the dealer (who’s been very helpful) and then sent it back to get a replacement. The new module arrived yesterday, I installed it... and it was even worse: as some programs didn’t open as soon as the new module was installed, I rebooted the PowerMac but it hasn’t been able even to load the OS anymore, it just stopped at the blue screen forever, once came out a black screen and a Darwin login, but nothing else. As soon as I removed the Ram module the PowerMac started to work perfectly again.I'd assume again there's something wrong in the Ram module, but isn't it too much unlucky to get 2 faulty modules one after the other, or maybe the problem could somewhere else, in my PowerMac?!?
Unfortunately I can't test the new module in my father's machine, as we live 700 kms apart.
    My hardware details are:
    Power Mac G4
    Model: PowerMac3,3
    CPU: PowerPC G4 (2.9)
    1 CPU
    CPU Speed: 400 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 896 MB
    Bus speed: 100 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.2.8f1
    thanks!

ok, I've now tried every possible combination... but with no success
First, taking out one of the "old" 128 MB I realized it was one of the High density DIMMs (chips on one side only) Japamac was mentioning, in total 2 of the 128 modules were like this. However, taking out one or both of them, or even having only the "new" 512 MB module in, hasn't changed much, sometimes the OS booted, sometimes not but there were always some programs not opening/crashing and Rember got stuck with an error message. With just the "new" module the booting stopped at the blue screen (only blue, no apple splash screen in the centre).
With the new module plus one of the old 128 MB modules (the one with chips on both sides) Rember got stuck very soon, and the error message was:

    All
i've captured OTF from smartforms and tried converting to PDF through 'CONVERT_OTF_2_PDF' FUNCTIOn module and after emailing to external email id, i found logo is completely disturbed (characters in logo got mixed up)..... later i tried converting with ''CONVERT_OTF' function module, but here i'm getting blank PDF internal table....
what am i missing in both ?

  • PXI-8431 not going into receive mode with VB6

    I am using a PXI-1045 chassis with a PXI-8431 RS422/485 card and communicating via a VB6 program
The output of the PXI-8431 RS485 module works OK when it is in send mode, the signal levels are approx 1v and 3v for high and low, but when it is in receive mode the outputs remain at 1v and 3v instead of going into passive mode and both lines floating at approx 2v with approx 300mV differential as they should. This means when the remote devices send, the amplitude of the signal is approx half as they are competing with the PXI module, and that the centre point of the two signals are at 1v and 3v respectively. Our software does not receive the signals from the PXI module which is consistent with my theory that it is still in send mode and taking control of the lines, or maybe it has changed it to 4 wire mode.
I have swapped over the PXI card and the remote cards with our good system and the problem does not move.
I have eliminated ALL the hardware on the new ring by replacing it with a 67 Ohm resistor on the pins of a 9 way D connector plugged onto the PXI card directly. With a scope I can see that the new system is not going into passive mode, but with the same connector the old system works OK.
The only difference I can see between the 6 old rigs we have that do work and the 2 new ones that do not work is the new ones use the the NI-XNET-PXI-8513 and the old ones use the PXI_8464 CAN card. Could this software be conflicting? Is there any other updates to the NI software that could be causing it?
    Solved!

    Hi,
I've had a check to see if we have any known software conflict issues with those cards but it all seems fine, it could be that the Windows Driver layer is causing some issues. If you nip into Device Manager and go to the properties of the 8431 you should be able to change it to 2-wire mode from those settings then re-run the program.
Also does the program throw any errors at all in terms of device resources when trying to move from send to receive mode?
What versions of NI-VISA and NI-Serial do you currently have installed?
    Kind Regards,
    Applications Engineer

  • Transparent mode with AIP-SSM-20

I currently have an ASA5510 in routed mode with an AIP-SSM-20.
There is a requirement to use a fibre optic connection between this ASA and another ASA across campus, so the AIP-SSM will have to be removed and replaced with the SSM-4GE.  This part should present no issue.
However, this will remove the IPS device, and I still want to use IPS.
So, what I am thinking is to get another ASA5510, install the AIP-SSM, configure ASA for transparent mode and put it in between the inside of the routed ASA and my LAN.  The transparent ASA would be functioning strictly as an IPS appliance.
Setup would look something like this:
Internal LAN <> transparent ASA with IPS <> routed ASA <> WAN
Can the AIP-SSM still perform IPS with the ASA in transparent mode?
Is there a way to configure the ASA and AIP-SSM such that traffic to/from a particular server completely bypasses the AIP-SSM?
I have a couple of fileservers that generate heavy traffic and could overload the AIP-SSM.
    Regards.

AFAIR, There is no problem to setup AIP in a transparent firewall.
"An ASA in transparent mode can run an AIP.  In the event the AIP fails,
the IPS will fail-open and the ASA will continue to pass traffic.
However, if an interface or cable fails, then traffic will stop.  You
would need a failover pair to account for this failure event, which
means another ASA and matching AIP."
And no there is no problem to exclude certain hosts/ports/subnets from inspection by IPS via MPF.

What I however consider however is if the ASAs 5510 as second tier firewall for 5520s will be enough.

  • Z77A-GD65 no longer boots with 4 RAM modules

I had 4 x 8GB Cosair Vengeance LP that used to work fine, but no longer boots into Windows with 4 but only with 2 RAM modules.  Any help in solving the issue would be appreciated. ( I need 32 GB as I run many virtual machines )
The 4 modules worked fine for few months until couple weeks ago,  when I saw issues with booting into Windows 7. The workaround was to "warm up" by leaving the PC in BIOS for about 5 minutes and it would boot fine.  Since couple days ago, it would POST but not boot into Windows or into live Linux on USB, so I started troubleshooting with bare bones first ( MB, CPU, 1 RAM, PS ) and then starting adding more and more components until I found that  1 and 2 RAM modules worked in either black or blue rail but with 4 RAM modules, it will POST, but not boot at all into either USB based live system or into Windows 7.
Memtest with 2 separate sets of modules pass with flying colors. Mixing the sets work fine too, but add 2nd set (i.e. 4 modules) and it fails to boot.  I am leaning more toward believing the issue is with the MB than with the RAM since mixing them doesn't throw any memory error.
Any suggestion on how to check if it's the RAM or MB ?

What voltage is the RAM running? A slight bump up in voltage might help.
As to voltage, I started with standard 1.5 and then incrementally upped it to 1.65v. At 1.6v and above, it does boot into Windows, but intermittently goes into BSOD... Works perfect with 1.5v with 2 RAM modules.
I'll save the money for next build instead of going for 32GB kit.  ... guess I'll live with 16GB for now.
Thank you all for the advice.

  • E72 problem to activate silent mode with 031.023

now it is very difficult to activate silent mode with the ctrl key !

I think this is not a bug, but a fix. In the previous FW it was TOO easy to switch to Silent mode and that would happen quite often by mistake (at least to me).
So I think that Nokia corrected this problem, but did not communicate properly with their customers....

    How do I enable TDM?
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.
Note: In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys," the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.
    How do I exit TDM?
To leave TDM, press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac that is in TDM. You can also exit TDM if you shutdown or sleep either computer or detach the cable.
Can I use a third-party keyboard or older Apple keyboard to enable TDM?
Some older Apple keyboards and keyboards not made by Apple may not allow Command-F2 to toggle display modes. You should use an aluminum wired or wireless Apple keyboard to toggle TDM on and

  • Firefox plug in container has stopped working, even in safe mode with plug ins disabled

My firefox keeps crashing every 5 - 10 minutes. Sometimes I get a windows error message saying "firefox plugin container stopped working", but most times I don't. These are the actions I've taken so far, with no effect:
    1. Updated all my plug-ins
    2. Run firefox in safe mode with plug-ins disabled
    3. Uninstalled and reinstalled firefox
    4. Run an AVG scan which turned up nothing
Can anyone offer advice on how to fix this (very annoying) problem?
I've had to write this in IE because firefox wouldn't stay open long enough for me to copy and paste it into the text box.
