IPTC data, keywords and captions

I used lightroom 4 for all my tagging/labelling and uploading work at sporting events.
It has always worked flawlessly and I was very happy with it, however, I just had to reset my laptop due to a harddrive failure so have had to download Lightroom 5 instead.
I cannot seem to get the IPTC template to attach to the files when I import them.
I usually setup a preset for the game I am at with some general keywords but most importantly the IPTC data for copyright and payment purposes.
Today I was not able to get this data to copy to any of the imported files at all and had to do it all manually which is extremely frustrating and time consuming.
To get the template into lightroom in the first place I used to save the .xmp file in a new folder. Then I would copy a jpeg image into that same folder and name them the same file. Then when I import the jpeg into lightroom I could see all the IPTC data and create a new template for each game/event from that.
Can anyone advise please?!

Yeah I created the same template I would have done in lightroom 4. I usually save it and then apply it automatically to all images upon import but it simply wasn't attaching anything to them.
I even tried syncing it across from other photos and it wouldn't copy.
Do you have any suggestions or even a guide on how to make the iptc template from scratch?!
I'm not shooting this weekend because I don't have it sorted yet but have a rugby match next weekend and the north east derby (Newcastle vs Sunderland) so need to sort it by then or I'll need to get photomechanic which I don't want to do!

I frequently find a need to edit or add to the caption while reviewing and geotagging photos in the Map module. Constantly toggling between modules is inconvenient. Is there a way to add/edit captions or keywords while working in the Map module (or view the map module while working in the Library?

IPTC Data vs keywords: Is it necessary to enter both?

If IPTC data fields, say for city, country, caption, etc. are used to enter various types of metadata for a photo. Is it necessary to also add such data as keywords (which, of course, are technically IPTC data, too)? If both types of data (keyword and IPTC) are always with the image, will a "keyword" search find matches with words in the IPTC data as well as actual, entered keywords, or does keyword mean Keywords only? It seems like a "belt and suspenders" approach to enter, e.g., "Kabul", "Afghanistan", and "surgeon" in the keywords if all those words are in, say, City, Country, and Caption.

Values/descriptions should be saved into dedicated tags only -otherwise there will be a mess!
For locations (in general) where photo was taken, there exist dedicated tags: Country, State, City, Location. Entering location name into Keyword tag will just cause confusion.
Just for example, if shot was taken in US city "Salt Lake City", then correct tagging is:
Country= United States
State= Utah
City= Salt Lake City
Location= Lindsey Park
If you write "Salt Lake City" as keyword (into Keyword tag), then everytime you search (by keyword) after "Lake", this photo will appear (even there's no lake on it).

Has anyone found a way to import IPTC data from a csv?

I have a lot of files with English keywords and captions in Aperture.
I need to export this metadata and get it translated into French.
I then would like to import that data back into the original files overwriting the original data.
Has anyone found a way to accomplish this?
Simply put I wish to add iptc metadata into images already in my Aperture database hopefully in an automated fashion from some kind of data file.

Keywords and comments from Canon Zoom Browser EX

My digital camera is a Canon Power Shot S2 IS. Before buying PS Elements 6, I organized photos using the Canon-supplied software, Zoom Browser EX. Many of the photos have keywords and comments using the Zoom Browser formats.
Is it possible to get these keywords and comments attached to the photos once they are in PS Elements 6? Have any of you folks successfully done this? I've looked in the usual help locations, but so far I have not been able to do this. PhotoShop Elements does not seem to know how to look into the Zoombrowser metadata or thumbnail files that go with the Jpeg picture files in each folder.

A quick Web search finds other people asking the same question. The various postings suggest that the Canon Zoombrowser probably stores keywords and captions in a properietary format, rather than in the industry standard metadata sections of the photos themselves (the "EXIF" data) that most other programs, including PSE 6, use. So you may be out of luck.

Pushing Keyword and Descriptions in PE4 to DNG files

I have a quetsion on assigning keywords to files. I use DNG files and want the descriptions and keywords I assign in the PE4 organizer to flow to the metadata of a DNG file. (I would like to use the organizer in PE4 becuase its well feature offers advantages over the Bridge CS2 options.)
When using DNG files in Adobe Bridge the keywords and captions posted in the metadata of the DNG file flow directly to the PE4 organizer.
When using PE4, I think I would need to go to the File Edit mode to change metafile properties. Saving this information in this mode creates a second file -- something I don't want right now. Does anyone have expereince in pushing keyword and captions/descriptions from PE4 organizer to the metadata of a DNG file? (I am a convert to DNG becuase it does not use sidecar xmp files, rather the metadata is embedded in the image file itself.

Thanks for the suggestion; however, I have tried to use the File/Write Tags for both DNG and JPEG photos and the metadata for the original photo file did not change.

Keyword and IPTC Syncronisation of 13.000 jpg and dng pictures

I have one catalogue with 13.ooo DNG pictures. In this catalogue I put 13.ooo JPG pictures with the same file name. Difference of cause .dng and .jpg As all JPG pictures have all IPTC informations and keywords too, I want to import these informations to the DNG files. Up to now I click one jpg picture at the time, synchronize IPTC Datas with the corresponding dng. Then copy keywords and paste them into dng. 13.ooo pictures. Is there any simple method to do this job? Thanks a lot.

Not sure why this is happening this way but may be closing PSE processes which access and work upon files in the background might make a difference.
Please launch Organizer and click Edit >> Preferences >> Media Analysis and turn off all checkboxes.
From the task manager, kill the following exes if running-
ElementsAutoAnalyzer
Adobe Photoshop File Agent
Dynamic Link Manager
repeat your workflow and check if the issue still happens.

Web Gallery with Date (dd-mm-yyyy) and Caption metadata only

Aperture is a great product.
I would like to add the date (dd-mm-yyyy) and caption to my photos but do not have that combination in the metadata drop down.
How do I customize this?

I want to put caption and date (but not time) on each photo in a photobook. I've finished laying out the book and only just discovered that I can't do it. The metadata button has many options but not caption and date together.
Any ideas?

What's the difference and purpose of Keywording and metadata such as title and caption, crator, sublocation , label etc? Where & how is the information used? Where does it appear?

Keywording is primarily for your own use for finding photos fast.
Title, Caption, etc are also for your own use but can be used by your clients or your stock company if you do not <Minimize Embedded Metadata> on export. Keywords are also included on export but are hardly of any use to others - unless you follow a standard for keywording.
You have the option of selecting title, caption, etc to appear in a Slide Show, on Print, or on a webpage created with LR.
If you go to the LR Help menu and type "title", or "caption" in the search box you will find plenty of advice for this.

How can i type international alphabet characters into keywords, titles, and Captions in Lightroom 4? Usual Microsoft key shortcuts not working.

I haven't found a way to do that directly, but there is a workaround. It' s a bit cumbersome, so it's only good for the occasional character.
In MS Word or any other text editor create a file that contains all the international characters you need.
When you need to insert one of these characters into Lr (captions, title, keywords) copy the character from your text document and paste it into Lr where needed.
On Windows Ctrl + C / V works fine.

File info and IPTC data entry help?

hello,
having updated to P/S CS5, some of the file info box(es) changes have started to annoy me. Maybe I`m doing someting wrong :-(
but what annoys me most is having created a template that I use when I import pictures through bridge, when I open it again the file info details in the description box are highlighted and the cursor jumps and goes to the last item in the box, I then have to drag the box down to make it larger, reposition the cursor to add further items, all this takes time especially on deadline where I might have 15 images to caption individually before sending.
I have tried saving the file info template with a larger description box but no joy, it just reverts to the original size.
My other main annoyance is the small font size, which when inputting lots of caption is to be honest, a pain. Maybe I need to use a seperate caption maker, any suggestions? or do I just need to spend a lot of time trying to not let this upset me.
If anyone has a trick on how to input and caption file info any quicker or better I would really appreciate your help.

at output, i assume you are displaying the data in a text
input form
field, the problem is not with cf or your data, but with the
basic html:

when the value of cf var contains double quotation marks, the
rendered
html will look like:

see where the problem is? the value displayed in the field
will be just
0.36, and the browser will ignore the rest of the code.

htmleditformat()

CS4-Exporting Keywords and other image data

I've been spending quite a bit of time going through my very large image library assigning keywords, filters etc to the images and am surprised to find there doesn't seem to be any file I can backup to preserve all this data.
Next month I will be buying a new Windows 7 system and am hoping all this time I've put in will not be wasted when I transfer CS4 to the new system.
Is all the data (keywords, filters etc) somehow embedded into the images themselves or do I need to back up a file?
I'd really appreciate any help with this.

Here is my experience with Bridge in its various guises.
I started with Photoshop 5 entering metadata into my digital collection. I then progressed to PS 6 and 7. Up to this point I had to do it all by hand.
After purchasing the full CS2 package I fell into love with Bridge as I could now setup templates. When managing tens of thousands of files templates made my job a whole lot easier. Bridge CS2 had no problems reading the metadata from my Photoshop files with metadata embedded.
After earlier this year upgrading to CS4 I had no problem viewing and manipulating my metadata. Since the information is embedded in the photos themselves it does not matter what viewer you use. That being said I find it disheartening that Win XP does not recognize my metadata. I suspect that Windows creates cart files to store its info in. Or perhaps in a file within its structure.
So go ahead and upgrade. As long as your metadata is embedded in the file itself you should have no problem. Unless I was just lucky.

How to add IPTC data to multiple photos w/o overwriting other data?

I need to see if there's a way to add IPTC data to one or more fields to mulitple photos without disturbing the other fields' data that's already there. For example, I've keyworded & captioned my images, but now would like to add the City or the Country to all the shots, or a group of shots.
Conventional Lift & Stamp will override the keyword & caption field info on the stamped images, which I don't want. How to I lift & stamp other select fields? I sure don't want to have to type in the city or country on hundreds/thousands of images!

there's no way to de-select the sub-categories of
Caption & Kepyword, leaving just State (or other

Indeed! Aperture does not make this at all obvious, but with any line highlighted in the Lift & Stamp HUD just hit the "delete" key and that line is gone. If you delete a category (line with a checkbox) the whole category goes, if you expand a category you can delete individual lines, whatever you like. Also very handy for adjustment stamping when you don't want to stamp a clone job, just white balance.
It remembers what you have removed until you do another Lift.

Select images using keywords and view slideshow...using what?

I have a library full of jpeg images that were created either using the export command from LR or by editing in Br/Ps and then savedAs jpeg. Now I want to watch slideshows on my monitor (30" Apple HD Cinema Display). Now I have the following Dilemma:
- I can start a Search Command in Bridge and narrow it down to exactly the images I want in my slide show. Then from the View menu select Slideshow. The IQ is terrible. True sharpness is only revealed when zooming in 100% but that's not the idea of a slide show.
- I can also use Apple OS's (Tiger) built-in slide show and start it from the finder. That way I get high quality, fast dissolving slide shows, that are unfortunately limited to the first 100 images in the Finder view. However, in the Finder I cannot select my images using keywords and IPTC info.
So could there be a simple solution to the problems I'm running into with Bridge?
Or could there be a nice viewer for MacOS that features the search option I want and renders good images and dissolve option?

I checked FAQ's both here and at Adobe, as well as the knowledge base. No results. I also searched the forum.
My setup: MPB dual core Intel, 2GB RAM, 30GB free disk space. Adobe CS3, just updated to Bridge version 2.1.1.9. No improvement at all so far. According to Ann only CS4 will solve the problem.

Data organisation and workflow

I am currently trialling Lightroom 4 after using DPP for about 6 months. When reading about how to use Lightroom I am left with some queries about data organisation. I would certainly appreciate some advice on this, taking into account that I am basically shooting for friends and family (and myself) rather than for clients.
When exporting JPEGs, the lightroom choices are web or print. But the other main purpose of my export, which I never see mentioned anywhere, is to add to the folder structure on my hard drive containing JPEGs only. These are the folders I use to view my photo albums locally using “normal” software such as Windows Photo Gallery rather than Lightroom.
As I see it, I am likely to end up with two folder structures:
– one for the JPEGs (basically my photo albums)
This structure would be used for local viewing purposes and probably also as the source for uploading to Facebook or some other website for sharing photographs
- one for the RAW files available to Lightroom (plus virtual collections)
I think I would mainly use Lightroom for:
* editing new photographs and exporting them to my JPEGs photo album folder structure
* later exporting selected photos as JPEGs specifically for printing, initially externally although I am hoping to get a better printer in the near future to which I could also print directly
* re-editing and re-exporting selected photographs when required.
Up to now (with DPP) the double folder issue has not arisen because I generally deleted my RAW files once the JPEGs had been created. But, with my move to Lightroom, I am trying to become slightly more “professional” and to make a point of keeping the RAW files and associated Lightroom adjustments for possible future use, although the JPEG folders would still be my main photo albums for local viewing purposes..
Does this make sense or are there some better suggestions for workflow/data organisation?

I am no professional photographer either, but still do no want the hassle to manage even more files than strictly necessary. Depending on jpg-size and quality you have considerable more storage space needed.

On the contrary, it is my belief that images will be valuable ONLY WITH METADATA, some decades from now. As in the past - inherited albums make sense due to their annotations, or collections of printed images in shoe boxes because there may be something written on the back.
In our household I am also the only real LR user, but I talk with my husband how he would search for images, especially some years from now. So I know what I have to do in terms of keywording, filling titles and captions, which fixed or smart collections to create. Then I show this to him, and tell him how filtering and text searches in library module works. I have prepared export presets for him to generate any jpgs on the fly he might need. Because I am not always available.
If you could not "avoid the bus", your relatives will watch a few Adobe TV tutorials about Basic Image Organization and maybe read page 175-244 about the Library module from Victoria Bamptons "The missing Frequently asked Questions" ( http://www.lightroomqueen.com/books/adobe-lightroom-4-missing-faq/): then they will be fully capable to make use of your heritage of images, by using LR as digital asset management tool.
It is not rocket science - millions of users world-wide have learned how to use Lightroom for that, of all ages and genders.
The best preparation to conserve your LR work for your heirs is to add any metadata they might wish for.
Not an exported bunch of jpgs, where possibly the only metadata available are in the folder names where you store them.
Should you be afraid that they might damage your catalog, give them a second catalog just for viewing, maybe on your second allowed LR installation. This catalog must not write to xmp if it references the same raw files as your main working catalog.
If you prefer, the 2nd catalog might point to exported jpgs. Just make sure to include these organisational metadata before exporting by writing to xmp.
I also have some underlying worries about what would happen if I lost the catalogue or it became unusable for some reason. I know I would still have the RAW files but the idea of having to re-develop from scratch an entire photo history sounds horrific. I know that I am probably worrying unnecessarily here since catalogues can be backed up just as securely as image files but I can’t quite get the worry to go away
Yes, absolutely: do take the same painstaking care to backup your LR catalog as you do with your raw images.
You can save a lot of work inside xmp of your files, but not everything. So your LR catalog is precious.
