IPTC description got lost - a bug?

Hi folks,
recently I started to use LR (2.5, 64bit version) to also edit my IPTC fields (only the RAW files, Nikon in my case) and unfortunately I ran into trouble doing so.
After I had finished the whole image and IPTC work I moved the image files and their related XMP files (which include the whole text related metadata) to another hard drive,  my "finished work" hard drive. This part of the workflow did never make any trouble with the IPTC stuff, as long as I did not use LR for that. What has happened:
This morning, when I started my PC (Intel Quadcore and XP Prof. 64bit) and opened LR I agreed to first save the catalog, as I always do. And all the IPTC description fields of all the moved RAW-files are completely empty (and the information is missing in the XMP files as well), only the description fields!
Is there still a misconception between what the LR database stores and what and when this is available in the XMP files?
Anyway, for me this seems to be bug!
This will cost me about 2 additional hours to recover the missing IPTC descriptions from a TIFF selection I made out of the finished RAW files, yesterday.
Knowing that there is a time gap between what's stored in the LR database and what and when it is available in the XMP files,
I always have set the LR catalog settings to "save changes automatically to XMP". Additionally, I regularly save the metadata settings by doing so manually ("STRG+S, or choosing "save metadata to file"), at least once a day or after major sessions. Anyway, this did not help in this case.
Anybody out there having an idea about the what and why on the problem above?
Thanks a lot in advance
Thomas

Hi dj_page,
thanks for your efforts. And here are my answers to your questions:
1. are you sure you have write access to the folder on your hard disk where the .xmp file is located?
Full access.
2. How are you moving these files to the 2nd hard drive ... Lightroom or Windows?
Windows. (I am always doing it this way. Btw, I am using Windows' tool robocopy to incrementally backup all my image files. Robocopy has proven to be absolutely reliable).
3. Before you move, does Lightroom show the message in the Metadata panel that the files re up to date?
Mmh, what exaclty do you mean by "re up to date"?
I usually do an additional manually  "save metadate to file", to be sure (!) that the last metadata upadates are in the XMPs.
Kind regards
Thomas

  • EXIF description data lost or damaged by PhotoShop Elements

    Hello,
When editing a photo in PhotoShop Elements, I have, depending on the case, one of the two following issues:
    - EXIF description is lost in the file saved by PhotoShop Elements
    - National characters (é, à, å, ö, ø and similar) are damaged (replaced by é, à , Ã¥, ö, and à respectively).
Feeedback from a different discussion thread says that in order not to loose EXIF description, it is mandatory to use Adobe Organizer for editing photos with PSE.
As we have named more than 100.000 photos using EXIF, I would like to get any advice from other users about how to solve this topic before starting to use extensively Adobe PSE.
We believe 30-50% of descriptions contain at least one national character.
    FYI
    - As we edit photos on two different hard disks and exchange them both ways, Adobe Organizer is not of much help. Only the description stored in the .jpeg file will be correctly synchronized between the disks, whereas information stored in organizer will not be correctly copied.
    - In parallell with PSE, we use an old software Microsoft Picture it for editing photos. This software does not recognize IPTC description, so unfortunately use of IPTC (handled correctly by PSE) is not a solution. By the way, anybody knows how to copy EXIF description to IPTC description for 100.000 photos?
    - We systematically copy the date + description of the photo into the file name (using XnView to rename files) in order to make this information visible in Windows Explorer. This method seems to be incompatible with the way organizer works (renaming is not recognized by organizer).
    - We have two computers, one on Windows XP and the other one on Windows Vista, so solution must be independent of Windows version.
Thanks in advance for any help or ideas about how to efficiently store descriptions of photos and make them visible in Windows Explorer.

  • IPTC Caption Metadata lost in referenced photos, Aperture 2.1.4

I have a mid sized library of personal photos. The older photos were imported to Aperture from iPhoto. My wife had added Captions to the photos in iPhoto and in Aperture. The photos are stored as referenced files, the more recent ones on the MacBook hard drive, the older ones are now on an external FAT32 formatted hard drive. Some time in the last year or so the Captions to the photos on the external drive have got lost, possibly when I upgraded the OS to Snow Leopard. The strange thing is that other IPTC metadata is still there. When importing the photos from iPhoto a Keyword was added, either "iPhoto Original" for the original photo or "iPhoto Edited" for the edited version, both photos now originals in Aperture.
I moved the photos to the external drive using Aperture Relocate Masters and the Captions have been visible since that move. I tried relocating a photo back to the original folder on the MacBook but the caption is still missing.
Has anyone had a similar problem?
Any help would be much appreciated. Hundreds of hours of work went into adding all the captions.

I have seen this kind of thing in Aperture 2 for what appears to be no reason on FAT32 drives - never really got to the bottom of it but it seems to be related to Ap2 re-reading the IPTC metadata from the master and replacing the IPTC that is in Aperture's database because Ap thinks the file changed.
Even without a FAT32 drive in the mix if you change ANYTHING about the master file Aperture will re-read the IPTC from the referenced master and replace the IPTC in Aperture's database. Ap3 is much more intelligent in the way that it handles this in most cases but can still do some unpredictable things which manifest as "disappearing" metadata within Aperture. I have sorted out my Ap3 work-flow so this doesn't happen to me any more but... there are some things that you cannot do that I would like or there will be blood.
Long story short - if Aperture thinks the file changed in anyway for any reason it can screw your metadata in Aperture. The infamous issue was using external software with Ap2 to add GPS data to masters which would wipe out IPTC data within aperture's database.

Ps. Note to self - write post on what works and what doesn't with Ap3 and metadata synchronization

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

Was Firefox uninstalled or did the icon just go missing for some reason?
You can check for Firefox using the Start menu, Run, type this and click OK/Go/Run (I can't remember XP very well):
    firefox.exe
If that works, you could check your Recycle Bin for the missing icon. Or you create a fresh shortcut as follows:
    Open this folder:
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\
right-click '''firefox.exe''' and choose Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)
    Does that work?

  • DATAGRID FOCUS ISSUE: Focus got lost, while moving from one cell to another cell using tab key.

Problem: Focus got lost, while moving from one cell to another cell using tab key.
Example: In an AdvanceDataGrid, there are three columns having custom ItemRenderer with Spark TextInput control (editable=true & focusEnabled=true).
When I try to move the focus in with in 2nd, 3rd & 4th column using tab key, focus got lost. Most of the time it’s working, but some time it doesn’t work. There’s no clue as to how may rows/columns the focus has jumped to; or whether the focus has gone out of the data grid altogether.
Observations: I am not sure whether this problem is because of custom component implementation or it is because of some issue related to Flex Component.
It only occurs when we perform some actions like some server call, some complex logic execution etc. at the focus out event of itemrenderer.
There is one property of datagrid i.e. editedItemPosition which contains row & column index of datagrid. On the focus out event, it gets null when focus got lost. We tried to set it, but it didn’t work.
    Steps Performed:-
    1. Currently focus is in 2nd column i.e. Apply to #.
    2. Once I press tab key from 2nd column, it goes to 3rd column which is correct.
    3. Now if I press tab key from 2nd column i.e. Payment #, focus should go to 3rd column, but it goes out of data grid and set the focus of button which is outside data grid.

  • Installed a SSD recently, some data got lost

    Hi,
I have a 2009 mini running ML. After I installed a SSD recently and transferred all data/apps using the migrating assistant I realized that some data got lost. My Iphoto is naked. All my albums and fotos are gone. where did they go??
Had angry birds installed. Played all level before and now it looks like it never has been played before.
Is there any way to transfer ALL data from the old disk to the SSD and not only a part of it?
All apps I had installed were transferred.
    regards
    lombokmike

You might try to repair permissions.
Otherwise, the easiest way would have been to use Carbon Copy Cloner
or Super Duper and clone the entire drive to the SSD.
If there were large collections of files that you did not want
transfered because of space reasons, you could selectively
chose items not to be contained in the clonong process.

  • App store app got lost on iPad, how to reinstall it?

My app for the app store got lost on my iPad and I didn't found it on the app store (via iTunes) itself. I just recognized it, because its no longer to possible to organize my apps via my mac book. The setting section for the app store is still available, but not the app itself.
How can I reinstall the app? Or did I make something else wrong?
Some communities wrote, that it might be due to a jailbreak, but I didn't made one (doesn't even know what exactly this means).
    Appreciate your help!

It can't be deleted , it's a built-in app (so you also can't re-download it). If you can't find it on any of your homescreens or app folders, and you can't find it via the spotlight search screen (swipe your first home screen to the right), then is it hidden by Settings > General > Restrictions > Installing Apps being set 'off' ?
If not then have you tried a reset to see if you can find it after the iPad has restarted ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

    Hello,
Just looking for any pointers. If I have an image open, I want to run a script that will check the top path(or selected path) for any open points. If it is an open path, add "open path" in the IPTC/Description.
I can not figure this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nevermind with the problem file link. It was a stupid error on my part. The loop that checks the subpaths was only checking
