IPTC legacy Contact - not imported by 3.4.1

Last year I tried out Aperture and found that it was able to see the 'IPTC legacy Contact' field. This is important for me, as it corresponds to the field "People" in the wonderful iView programme that I've been using for ever. It lists the people on my images. Recently when I upgraded to Mountain Lion, this old program stopped working however. And so I decided to buy a fresh Aperture, and import my pictures.
However: the new version of Aperture does not import the IPTC legacy Contact anymore!
This XMP:People field is equal to the IPTC:Contact (legacy) field, and in iView it is used to list the people on the image.
I've checked the jpeg file using exiftool to see if Aperture can write fields using 'Metadata'->'Write IPTC Metadata to original', or do the inverse with 'Metadata'->'Update from Original'.  The result is:
-- Aperture can write the IPTC legacy Contact field
-- Aperture does not input the IPTC legacy Contact field
That means that the new Aperture 3.4.1 version cannot do what the older version did half a year ago??
Something else I notice, is that when I fill in the name of a face, this name is added as one of the IPTC Keywords.
.. so should I try to copy my "XMP:People" = "IPTC:Contact" (the two are equal) to the Keywords?
Is this is a known bug, where can I see a list of other known bugs in metadata handling?
How soon it will be fixed? And will I  then be able re-read my metadata from the original files?
Another question: in iView, I was used to being able to merge the metadata that I had entered with the fields in the file, where either information in the file or in iView would 'win' in the merger.  How should I do such an operation in Aperture?

Same here. I checked on my iMac and an MBP in Aperture 3.4.1, MacOS X 10,8.2, and I see the same. Aperture exports the legacy contacts field, but it does not show it in the versions when importing an image.
However, when I check the imported original/master image file, the IPTC field is not erased - the version just does not reflect the data stored in the legacy contacts field.
Something else I notice, is that when I fill in the name of a face, this name is added as one of the IPTC Keywords.
.. so should I try to copy my "XMP:People" = "IPTC:Contact" (the two are equal) to the Keywords?
Keywords? or do you mean IPTC tags? The keywords are a special kind of metadata tags, and I do not see the "faces" names in the Aperture keywords. In which tag do you see them?
if you want to use another IPTC field to store the Contact info, I'd recommend to copy your info to one of the metadata fieldds, that are not marked as "legacy". Any feature labelled "legacy" is likely not to be supported in the near future.
Is this is a known bug, where can I see a list of other known bugs in metadata handling?
I have not seen this bug reported before, and do not know of any list of known bugs.
How soon it will be fixed? And will I  then be able re-read my metadata from the original files?
Write a bug-report to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html
They should be told, that users still depend on this legacy tag, otherwise the chances are slim that they will bother to fix it - the name "legacy" clearly indicates that this metadata tag is doomed and only supported for compatibility reasons.
Your imported originals/masters still have this field and carry the data - at least mine do - so you might consider to write an Automator service to access them with a shell script using exiftool.
But it might be easier in the long run to simply copy these data to a different tag that is still supported.
in iView, I was used to being able to merge the metadata that I had entered with the fields in the file
Aperture keeps the data you enter in the versions. Also, when you import an image file, the tags should be copied to the version. When you edit the tags and want to add these changes to the original file, you can use the command "Metadata > Write IPTC Metadata to Original". That will write your changes to the original file, but not merge the data.
Just some thoughts - sorry that I do not have a solution for your problem

Léonie

Hi all, I have .vcf contact file exported from yahoo and need to import it to cloud. When I try to import it I get an eror "53 contacts not imported, eror reading vCards". Pls help ty

1 - Select  the thumbnail of one of the problem photos and use the File ➙ Reveal in Finder ➙ Original menu option.  This will take you to the folder containing the original file with that file selected by the Finder.
You can also use Find Any File to search for that file (get the file name from the Info pane in iPhoto). You will find the thumbnail version and maybe an edited version also.  Made sure what is found is the large, original version and note were it's located.  Search all of your drives with FAF just in case.
If you don't fine the full sized version then the only recourse is to use a file recovery application like   SubrosaSoft FileSalvage on your drives to see if any of your full sized photos can be recovered.   If you find enough files to make the purchase of the software worthwhile buy it and recover the files.  However, since it may have been quite a while since you discovered the missing originals it seems unlikely you'll be able to recover any due to being overwritten.
2 - book projects are just entries in the library databases and can't be exported to another library.

  • Cisco PCA contacts not importing all of them

Trying to get contacts imported into Cisco PCA (Cisco Unity Personal Communications Assistant) so we have certain users call by voice command...
I am able to get most of the contacts in, but only about 50% will import from Exchange.  I cannot figure out why others are not importing.  I cannot find anything obvious different between the contacts.

So after much back and forth with TAC and getting the right people involved, there's a hard limit of 150 on Cisco's side.  We are putting in a PER with our partner, but I'm guessing this is a "don't hold your breath" situation  Its too bad this isn't documented anywhere and wasted a lot of my time and their time.

    Far too much missing information.
    1) Outlook version being used?
    2) How many email accounts (along with the applicable account "types" as in POP, Imap, etc) are configured in your Outlook profile?
    3) What exactly do you mean by "tried for years...............to import with my Accounts"? Import from where?
    4) Please clarify what you mean by "thousands of Accounts and Contacts" - specifically - the difference between an Account and a Contact as used in your description?

  • Mav Contacts does not import csv file

Trying to import my Outlook exchange contacts to Mavericks Contacts.  Exported from outlook to excel. Saved excel file to csv format.  Tried to import csv file to Mavericks Contacts:  Error message says the csv file is not compatible.  Also imported the csv file to Numbers and saved again as another csv file.  Same error message.  Suggestions?

The following was copied from the Contacts Help.
Import contact information saved or exported from other apps. The files can be in LDAP Interchange Format (LDIF) or text format (tab-delimited or comma-separated value (CSV)).
If you’re importing a tab-delimited or CSV file, make sure it’s formatted correctly using a text editor such as TextEdit.
Remove any line breaks within a contact’s information.
Make sure that fields in a tab-delimited file are separated by a tab, instead of by another character. Don’t include spaces before or after tabs.
Make sure that fields in a CSV file are separated by a comma, instead of by another character. Don’t include spaces before or after commas.
Make sure all addresses have the same number of fields. Add empty fields as needed.
In Contacts, choose File > Import, select the file, change the encoding if necessary, then click Open.
If you’re importing a text file, review the field labels.
If the first card contains headers, make sure the headers are correctly labeled or marked “Do not import.” Any changes you make to this card are made to all cards in the file. To not import the headers card, select “Ignore first card.”
To change a label, click the arrows next to the label and choose a new label. If you don’t want to import a field, choose “Do not import.”

Why does Lion KEEP reversing changes you make in address book and other applications without your consent and without wanting it to??? Plus address book will NOT import old address book contacts from Snow Lepoard 10.6 and keep them.  This Lion OXS 7 is .. becoming very frustrating ... it will NOT keep changes made in the Address Book and it has destroyed my contacts which I only have electronically since 10.4 in my address book. I am NOT happy with this OS7 it has a lot of issues and faults.  How can one stop automatic reversing of data when inputting???
    Please help!
Wished I NEVER upgraded to this Lion!!!
    Carmelo

Relax. Your address book database is corrupted.
If you are syncing your Contacts with MobileMe or something else, disable it for now.
Backup your address book by going to File>Export>Address Book Archive.
    Quit Address Book.
Open your Library by holding down the Option (alt) key while selecting the Go menu in Finder. Select Library. Navigate into your Application Support/AddressBook folder and delete the addressbook-v22.abcddb file.
Open Address Book. It will recreate the database from the raw data.
See how that works. If it is ok, then reenable syncing and see how that works.

  • HT4489 iCloud Contact Book will not import 4,000 vCards

iCloud Contact Book will not import from Palm data base of 4,000 vCards when asked to "Import vCards"showing "fault" (1.56MB)... suggestions?

You might want to try importing these in smaller batches, such as 500-1000 at a time.  It's also possible that the the particuar vCard format you are using is not compatible with iCloud.  If that's the case, you may need to import them to another services such as Google contacts, then export them from there in a more compatible vCard format.

  • ITunes for Windows 7 64 bit, Windows Live Mail Contacts not (all?) syncing

I have researched this as much as I can but cannot find a solution.
I had my iPhone 4 synced to my Window Vista Home Premium PC using iTunes just fine until January when the PC motherboard crashed. No data was lost and all contacts have been restored to my new PC with is Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit). My contacts are in Windows Live Mail (Windows Contacts) and I'm syncing via iTunes with "Sync Contacts with: Windows Contacts" selected.
However, not all contacts are syncing with my iPhone. In fact, I'm not sure they are syncing at all, although the sync function goes through. It may be that the only ones that sync are those that existed before the new PC (i.e., the Windows Vista contacts which were in Windows Mail). I have created new contacts on both the PC using the new version Windows Live Mail and on the iPhone since the crash, and would like to get them synced up.
    Symptoms:
    1) Some specific contacts on PC are not on the iPhone after multiple sync attempts.
I have so far positively identified one contact that did not sync. It shows in Windows Live Mail under Contacts, however it does NOT show up in my Windows username/Contacts folder!
    2) One Contacts group on PC is not on the iPhone, although two others are (they probably were from before the crash).
I have so far positively identified one group that did not sync. It shows in Windows Live Mail under Contacts groups, however it does NOT show up in my Contacts folder as a .group file!
    3) The same group as #2 also does NOT show up in the iTunes group list under "Selected Groups" on iTunes, but the other two groups do. (I do not use "selected groups" because that disables "all contacts" syncing, but the groups are visible grayed out on the list.)
    4) As a test, I created a new contact on my iPhone, synced, and it shows up now in Windows Live Mail Contacts; it also shows up in my Windows username/Contacts folder.
    5) As a test, I created a new contact in Windows Live Mail and it does NOT show up in my username/Contacts folder. I synced the iPhone again and it does NOT show up on my iPhone contacts.
OK folks, where are these missing contacts going and how can I get them synced??  Thanks!
PS: I have the latest iTunes 10.5.3.3, no updates are available. However, Apple Support/iTunes seems to suggest Windows 7 64 bit either "does not use Windows Contacts" (which seemed quite wrong until I ran the tests above), and also that Windows 7 64 requires iTunes 10.4.1, which I cannot install because I have a later version installed. I would have assumed the correct version installed for my OS when I installed iTunes on the new PC. iTunes runs fine by itself and in coordination with my iPhone other than the above issue.
PPS: This site seems potentially relevant, however is highly technical: http://liveunplugged.wordpress.com/2011/02/04/windows-live-mail-contacts-databas e/
but doesn't help with this problem.

I didn't get any help on this from the forum, but from studying around and experimenting with different approaches, I have come up with the following conclusions:
Under Windows Vista, Windows Mail synced its contacts with Windows Contacts [which are in c:\users\username\contacts]. iPhone via iTunes synced with Windows Contacts. Changes to either Windows Mail Contacts or iPhone contacts would always update each other. Life was good.
Under Windows 7, Windows LIVE Mail (WLM) does NOT sync its contacts with Windows Contacts. It puts them into a hidden database. If you have prior Windows Contacts and brought them along for the ride, they are still there in the folder but they are not connected to the WLM contacts database
When you first set up Windows Live Mail, you can import your Windows Contacts and they appear to be synced. (In fact, they are, but only at that single point in time.)
If you change any Windows Live Mail contact or add a new one, it does NOT change in Windows Contacts. It only changes in the WLM contacts database. It therefore does NOT sync to your iPhone.
Similarly, if you change a contact on iPhone or add a new one, it will sync with Windows Contacts. However, this does NOT update your Windows Live Contacts.
So, from what I can tell, here is what this means: to maintain a steady state, you have two choices:
Whenever you update or add a contact, add it in either iPhone or Windows Contacts [the Windows Contacts folder has a "New Contact" button], and they will stay in sync with each other. Then manually update or add it in Windows Live Contacts to keep those up to date so you can use them for e-mail.  OR
Whenever you update or add a contact, add it in either iPhone or Windows Contacts, and they will stay in sync with each other. DO NOT manually update Windows Live Contacts, but realize they are not always up to date. If an address needed for an e-mail is not in there, manually retrieve it from your Windows Contacts or your iPhone and insert it into the e-mail. [Having done that, you can right click on the address in the e-mail and add it to your WLM contacts if you want.] Periodically, manually delete all of your Windows Live Mail Contacts and then re-import your Windows Contacts into Windows Live Mail and, voila, your contacts are in sync again! (Isn't that great, I mean really awful??)
NOTE: If you follow course #2, DO NOT import your Windows Contacts into Windows Live Mail contacts without deleting your existing Windows Live Mail contacts, or you will end up with a double set plus the new ones.
FURTHER NOTE: I obviously can't make any guarantee you won't lose data if you follow course #2. Be sure you have a complete backup before deleting your WLM contacts. However, I will say that after experiencing a double set of WLM contacts (by failing to understand the first NOTE above), it was impossible to pick out the new items [WLM will now show you the date of entry or modification of the contact, so you can't sort by date], so I deleted all of them and re-imported my Windows Contacts and had a complete set again.
AND ONE FINAL NOTE: I have not tested how any of this affects Windows Live Contacts used online outside of Windows Live Mail, because I do not use Windows Live online.
Please post further comments if you have any more information on this topic.

  • Lightroom 4.2.  unable to import. message files were not imported because they cannot be read

    Lightroom crisis:
suddenly, unable to import images into lightroom - A window comes up that says ""Following files were not imported because they cannot be read". I was in the process of importing images - 10 images were imported from the shoot then the import stopped.
I tested the card and the card readers by using cards from different cameras and using different card readers. I was able to import the images into a folder on my desktop so know nothing is corrupted.. The memory cards are good, my card readers are good. no setting have changed in my camera. Nothing has changed in my routine. Have been using lightroom for several years.
I import through a card reader, convert to DNG and save on an external hard drive. All very ordinary.
No one I have contacted has had nor knows of anyone who has had this problem.
Unable to get in touch with anyone at Adobe.
Thank you for any help or direction to tec support

On a quick read, it sounds like the same issue that had me dead in the water for 7 days. (LR 4.2)  I tested everything - my card readers are good, the memory cards are not corrupted, tried different cards from different cameras, etc. Working my way through all my tech savvy friends and professionals, I was lucky to connect with a great sr. tech person at Adobe.  After trouble shooting  all lightroom possibilities (3 hours on the phone) we checked my external hard drive where all the images are stored.  Even tho the external hard drive had plenty of space and "told me" that it was healthy and functioning well, Adobe had me go into the external hard drive's properties/tools and do a "check for errors.  12 hours later after the program went though the drive one file at a time, it found errors, moved them to a separate folder, and now all is functioning OK.  The hard drive had not crashed nor were any images lost.  As can happen after some time there must have been a scratch or similar that prevented more images from being written  (or read) to the drive.  Even though all is working OK at this time, I will replace my external hard drive (and it's back up external drive).just in case there are more "bumps" on the external hard drive.
My tech knowledge is limited, and I am not intuitive  about anything digital, so can't add any more information then the experience I had.

  • Can not import Outlook 2007 .CSV or .PST files into Outlook 2013 on Win 8.1 64 bit

I have a new computer (Sony VAIO Pro 11 Ultrabook) with a brand new install of Win 8.1 - 64 bit and MS Office 2013 Professional Plus.  Everything works fine EXCEPT I can not import my contacts or calendar from Outlook 2007 Win 7 - 32 bit into the
.msn folders in each case.  I can open .pst files in Outlook 2013 but they open in a local file and when I copy and paste them into the Exchange ActiveSync .msn contact and calendar files so that they will sync with Outlook.com Outlook 2013 crashes.
It can't even be reopened unless the wireless is turned off, and then you have to create a new data file as a default and then delete the old account and re-establish it.  I have tried using the import functions as well with both
.CSV and .PST files that were exported from Outlook 2007 and an error message stating that this is not supported comes up.  I have also tried to turn on sync with my iPhone to see if the files will sync from the phone through Outlook.com and nothing happens
there either - no sync on the web and nothing at the PC.  Email works fine after adding the account again etc.
None of the procedures on the forums work (open PST file in the local folder then copy/paste, drag/drop, or move the files) so please don't respond with those links.  All result in crash.  Does anyone at MS know what's up with their latest
    and greatest SW?
    Thank you for your assistance.

Import the calendar and contacts in Outlook.com. For contacts, export from Outlook as csv and import into Outlook by choosing the Other option (https://people.live.com/import/other?biciid=ImportCatalog)
You'll need to save the calendar as an ics file to import it. Select the calendar folder, the File, Save as an save as an ics.

  • Iphone contacts "not available" to car phonebook after messing around with Outlook.pst file names and backups. Iphone4 connects to car though and other phones connect properly.

iphone contacts "not available" to car phonebook after messing around with Outlook.pst files, names and backups, on my ms XP 2003 laptop. I substituted a much smaller new Personal Folder -Contacts File, with a smaller list of phone numbers (4 only as a test) which successfully synced to the iPhone 4. The iPhone connects to the Skoda Octavia HandsFreeSystem OK (Bluetooth works fine), but now iPhone wont load the new Contacts as it did originally. However a family Nokia (never messed with) can connect properly. So must be the iPhone or more likely an Outlook.pst \ Contacts problem. Ideas?

After fiddling a little more, the following fixed my corrupted outlook.pst file:
    1) I made a backup
    2) In outlook under file, I exported the calendar to excel
    3) In outlook under file, I imported the calendar back to outlook
    And voila, it worked.

  • I´m going to change computer soon. And im worried that if i sync my iPhone to my new computer it will not import

I´m going to change computer soon. And im worried that if i sync my iPhone to my new computer it will not import all the apps and music that i have or delete it. so could anyone tell me how it will do?
I have windows xp 32 bit and im running on the latest iTunes.
I will swap to windows 7 probaly 32 bit

How do you normally do ti when you switch computers?
Does Windows not have a method of transferring everything from one computer to another?
You can use your backup copy of your computer to copy everything.
For the itunes portion, you can type "move itunes library" into the google search bar.
Windows should have a way to copy all doc/pics/files/contacts/calendars/etc.

  • Do not import duplicates-BUT DOES

I had exported all of my images that had Keywords added to them to 'start over' my library. I imported those back to establish my base library. All is good. I then went back to my non-keyword tagged images, many of which are those that were imported with keywords. Even though Do Not Import Duplicates is checked, duplicates get imported.
DSCF1046.jpg (tagged with 'Me') is in library, go to folder with the un-tagged image DSCF1046.jpg (I don't shoot RAW so it's not that issue) and it gets imported.
Is it not considered a duplicate because one has IPTC data embedded and the other doesn't even though they are named the same?
    OS 10.6.4, Aperture 3.0.3

Duplicate detection is imperfect. It usually works, with the proviso that you must be importing into the same project where the files already exists. That said, it's not 100% perfect.
My suggestion if you're importing from the same card multiple times is to use "check none" and then manually select the files you want to import. Takes a few seconds but then you know the right thing will happen. I do this all the time when I'm traveling and I want to have a couple backups of my images in a couple places: On the memory card is one of those backups so I shoot until I fill them; often across multiple shoots and downloads.
