IPTC - updating masters

I want to update IPTC data so that, if my library ever needs to be rebuilt, the keywords are embedded in the jpegs themselves.  So I imported some pics, put in some keywords, clicked on "write IPTC to master", then deleted the files from Aperture and reimported from Finder, but the keywords aren't attached to the files.  How to permanently attach keywords?  Thanks.

What are the pifalls of writing metdata (IPTC) to the masters.
The only pitfall is, when you mess up a batch change command, what is fairly easy to do, and write the wrong changes to the masters at the same time for hundreds of photos. Then you will not be able to restore the original IPTC captions and headlines from the original files, but will have to do that manually.
For example, what sometimes can go wrong, is to forget to change the "append" flag to "replace". Then you will append the new caption to the old, and that may not be what you wanted to do. Or you may forget to edit a predefined metadata preset, and apply a setting from the last import, with wrong location and caption data.
Before you ever use "apply to master", better triple check all settings carefully

I'm trying to export my Aperture masters to use in Lightroom, can't get the ratings to export. Tried writing the IPTC data to the masters and adding the IPTC4XMP file when exporting, neither worked. The ratings show up in Lightroom if I export the versions. These are all .jpg's that I am exporting. Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks

    There are two problems here:
    1) Aperture does not modify its "original" files on export.  Meaning with the JPEG files that Aperture will NOT modify them, and it will not write IPTC data to them.  It exports the XMP sidecar files, as you're seeing.
    2) Adobe will NOT read IPTC sidecar files for non-RAW images.  So if it sees a JPEG file, it will not look for an XMP sidecar file.  It just doesn't read them, so the data won't be imported by Lightroom.
If you are using JPEG files, then probably the solution is to check the box in Aperture to tell it to write XMP metadata to the original files.  They're not RAW files, so they're not proprietary in any way, so writing the XMP metadata to the JPEG files is probably pretty safe.

Oh, baby! This bad boy flies!! Here's what to expect:
I had 40,000 images in Aperture 3 and it was dog slow at everything. I installed 3.1 update today. It took 5 minutes to update the database and then behaved marginally better than before at ASIC library navigation. I was disappointed.
Then I QUIT the app. It took a couple of hours to "update files for sharing" with a counter that went to 110,000 images. So it must have updated every thumbnail and variation of preview. Turned it back on , and BAM. Came up fully in seconds. Paused for 10 seconds ten everything was lickrty split. For the first time ever, I can use the Projects view with all 791 projects and scroll quickly. I even put it in photos modevand whipped thru all 49,000 images!
Haven't done anybprocessing yet, but i'm liking it!!

  • 10.5.7 best practice

We are in the midst of rolling out 10.5.6v1.1 server.
The OD Master is online and one replica. We have 4 more to go spaced out over the next 8 weeks.
With the 10.5.7 released update there is no mention of the best way to upgrade the OD Master and Replica.
Should one upgrade the Master first then the replicas or the replicas then the master? Could you upgrade the replicas not yet deployed and then come back to the master and remaining replica?
Decisions, decisions. I hate it when a major update hits in the middle of a deployment.

    Hi
You would have to pick your moment but a slightly different approach could be: Shut down the current OD Master. Promote one of the Replicas to be the Master. Demote the other Replicas.
This way if it goes wrong you still have an OD Master.
Shut down the newly promoted OD Master after first archiving the LDAP Database as well as making sure you have a current backup of User's Home Folders. Although this does depend on where the Home Folders are being served from. Restart the old OD Master and run the update. Test, test and test again before doing anything else. When you're happy run the update on the other servers and re-promote them back to Replica Status.
Restart the previously promoted OD Master which will now be the old Version of the Server. Demote to Standalone run the update and re-promote back to Replica.
The documentation does make mention of what to do although it's vague and generalized at best:
    http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/OpenDirectory_Admin_v10.5_3rdEd.pdf
Page 67. Beyond what is available in the Admin Manuals is the documentation provided when attending the appropriate Server Training Courses. This documentation does outline in detail how to go about updating Masters and Replicas.
As ever don't forget to make sure all the servers are using the same NTP Server.

  • Transferring from iPhoto

Used iPhoto for several years and was delighted. Transferred to Aperture and have persevered for 4 weeks but am struggling. The transfer of 25,000 photos worked well and I have on an external hard drive but gee th response can be slow and buggy. Quite q large chunk of date data seemed corrupted in the transfer and I've had to batch change so many projects. A couple of questions:
On the Library. It shows my Aperture projects and Albums but seems to also want to show my iPhoto projects a s a long list. I stupidly thought I could delete and Sid so and found the Aperture projects disappeared. Restored fine but is there a way to get rid of this annoying list?
Date change. Ok. So I thought I did it right. Selected a project and selected all photos in the project. Hit the Metadata tab and selected Adjust Date and Time. Inerted new date and checked update masters. Now.....the individual date is changed ( when I hit alt command I) but.....when I look at the neat project icon, it still shows the original date, and annoyingly, sorts based on that date as opposed to the updates. I suspect I'm missing something blindingly obvious....but cqnt figure out what.
On the very positive side.  The adjustments capability is great. Very intuitive.

    What would cause the following:
Make an album in iPhoto and place 10 pictures in it. You can count the 10 photos and it is confirmed at the bottom of the screen.
Then you go to select this album in the computers iPhone set up. However the album selection show only a count of 8 items and sure enough, when you sync there is only 8 images transfered to the iPhone ??
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Iphoto 11 backup

I'm trying to figure out why the option FILE -> BACKUP RESTORE is not available on my iPhoto 11 menu. It looks like my iPhoto's library is backing up correctly via Time machine but I'm not able to restore just on single file, just the entire library. Any ideas?

iPhoto: Restoring from Time Machine with iPhoto 9.1.5 and OS X Lion
When using iPhoto 9.1.5 or later and Time Machine with OS X Lion, iPhoto no longer has the Browse Backups option. This means that instead of restoring specific photos within your iPhoto Library, you must restore your entire iPhoto Library when restoring from Time Machine. Follow the steps below to view and restore from your Time Machine drive, or if you're using a Mac portable, you can restore from a local "snapshot" stored on your Mac's internal drive.
Lion, Time Machine, and the death of the iPhoto interface
The Sneaky Way is to Control (right) click on the iPhoto Library, choose Show Package Contents from the resulting contextual menu, locate the Masters folder, and navigate down through the nested folders (they’re nested by Year, Month, Day, Some Oddly Named Folder, and then the images for that day). Now fire up Time Machine and go back to a point before you tossed the images. Locate the images you want (you can use Quick Look within Time Machine to find just the images you desire) and restore them. (Note: option-click and select "Restore to", choose Desktop, and then drag from Desktop to iPhoto)
When you return to iPhoto, your images won’t be there. You’ll have to dig into the newly updated Masters folder and locate the images you’ve restored. Pull them out of the folder they’ve been moved to and then add them back to iPhoto by dragging them in.

  • Referenced masters and IPTC

Hello, I am evaluating Aperture and playing with the different possibilities.
I'd like to know if, when I am adding IPTC informations, it's possible to update the original master referenced image. I think, in fact, that Aperture only writes in its library and add IPTC only after an export.
Is it instead possible to "sync" the original master image, so that if I open it from - for example - the finder - I see the added IPTC informations?
    Thanks,
    Antonio

i can see why you would want something like that, it's sometimes easier to search for your images with spotlight and keywords than to wait for aperture to open and use its slower search function on the whole library. aperture, however has a philosphy of not changing original master files, probably for some very good reasons. although it would be perfectly possible and easy (i think iview media pro did it that way on the mac) to store the ipct data in the file's resource fork, and thus not changing the original, apple chose not to mess with the file at all. after all, they already write all the info to the database and a series of plist files saved in the library. a third place to write all this, and a place where the user could easily mess up the resource fork would simply complicate things.
in aperture 2 there is a way to export your masters with the info embedded into the file, and not an xmp sidecar. you could export your masters with iptc data, delete them from the library and reimport them referenced, but there would be no way to sync the info without repeating this step and you would lose all your image edits along the way.

  • I've moved my Aperture library to another computer, and masters are referencing an old path name.  How can I update these references?  Reloctating masters does not work in this case :(

I've moved my Aperture library from one computer to another using Finder.
I merged the library with one which was already on the computer.
Now, the photos I imported have reference to the old path name on my old computer.
How can I update these references as "Relocate Masters" does not work in this case?

Just one suggestion to be able to reconnect all at once:
Create a smart album containing the images with missing masters:
File -> New ->  Smart Album,     and add a rule: File Status is "Missing"     (or File Status is "offline")
Then select the images in this album and go to the File menu:
and select:   File -> Locate referenced File
If you are lucky, Aperture will reconnect all at once, if you point the first image version to its counterpart.

  • BAPI to Update the OA/PO with the new partners from vendor masters

    Hello All,
We got a requirement to update the Contract or purchase order with new partners from vendor  master.
In brief the partner information of a  PO when created with reference to a contract  will be reflected from the contract but not from Vendor Master partners .So when the vendor master got changed after the creation of the Contract the partner information in the PO is not in synchronous with Vendor Master partnes.
Hence please help us with any BAPI to update the PO partners with Vendor masters .

  • Writing IPTC Metadata to Masters

I know some of this has been discussed, but I've got a few more questions on the topic. To ensure my captions, keywords, and location information is always available no matter what cataloging software I use, I wish to write my IPTC metadata to the master images. Here are my concerns:
    1) I have altered the Creator, Headline, Source, Caption, Keywords, Location, City, State/Province, and Country fields - I assume all of these will be written to the masters since they're IPTC standard? Are there length limits for these fields (that is, is there a risk that some will be truncated)? Are there any drawbacks to writing these tags to the masters? (I know many people here don't want their originals touched, but as long as it doesn't affect the quality of my jpegs, I'm fine with it.) Most of my recent photos have GPS metadata - I have not altered these, nor have I added location data to photos that didn't originally have them, so I'm assuming those fields wouldn't be affected?
    2) Is there no IPTC-standard field for people shown in a photo? (I know Aperture/iPhoto's Faces is proprietary, and I'm guessing so is Adobe's People field in their XML metadata.) Should I then just assign people's names as keywords, or is there a better way? (This wouldn't be a problem, as relatively few of my photos have human subjects.)
    3) I have a library of about 45,000 pictures, all of which (except for about 1400 movies) have had some piece of metadata altered. I've noticed Aperture starts to get slow after I've been working in it for a while - so, should I write the tags in stages, or should I just highlight all of them at one time and let it work? About how long should it take?
    4) Finally, I've tested writing the tags to the masters on a few of them, and I've noticed the "date created" shown in the Finder gets changed to the current date and time - Does this mean the entire file was re-created? Would Time Machine have to then re-copy all of them? (My masters total 153 GB, so that might take a while to back up.)
I know this is a lot at once, but it was a fair amount of work to migrate from iPhoto to Aperture (even with Aperture's convenient import feature) since iPhoto's cataloging tools are different from the IPTC standard. I'm contemplating another migration, and I don't want to have to go through all that again.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks all... as I've been digging into this digital asset management concept for a few years now, and there's more to it than I could have imagined!
viskwal: That's about what I figured. Actually, tagging Faces as keywords will be easy for me since I already have a smart album for each person in Faces. (They're in folders by context - that is, classmate, coworker, family member, etc. - just in case, years down the road, I see a name and don't remember how I know that person.)
As for locations, I could go back and locate all my photos from before I had the GPS-equipped camera, but I haven't bothered, so I don't know how you'd save that data. I've also been shooting exclusively jpeg since it's got built-in metadata (and I don't do any post-processing), so I have no experience with RAW.
Michael Hobi: Thanks for the link - I think I'm ok as far as those lengths are concerned. (I have a few long names in the Location field, but that wasn't mentioned there.) As for the write time, that's actually about what I figured - it won't be instantaneous, but at least I'm reasonably sure it won't go on for days. (My original import from iPhoto took 17 hours!)

  • Updating MetaData from Original Masters Possible?

    Hi,
I spend hours (well, most of a day) importing my 13k+ stock library into Aperture after switching to Mac. I used to use Extensis Portfolio on Windows to catalogue my finished files.
Well, it's my own fault for not checking as i was going through all this (I assumed Aperture would be at least as intelligent as Extensis Portfolio), but Aperture seems to be very, very picky about what it recognises as valid IPTC information.
Now, all my images have been IPTC tagged using various versions of Photoshop over the years, but many of them seem to have lost their Description (Caption in Aperture) field during the import.
I have now fixed the problem files by using Graphic Converter to go through my entire collection and resave all the TIFs - which seems to solve the problem (openeing them in PS CS3 and saving them again, doesn't make the issue go away with older files, although new PS CS3 files work fine when imported).
Is there a way now to make Aperture extract Metadata again, or do I have to literally destroy the entire library and start again from my now corrected original masters?
I have to say - I'm not terribly impressed by Aperture stumbling over such a fundamental thing as importing IPTC data - Extensis Portfolio has no problem extracting IPTC data from just about any version of Photoshop.
    Thanks for any help.

I have the same question. I have around 40 images out of a total of 7,000 or so in Aperature for which the IPTC metadata embedded in the original images does not display in Aperature. I don't know the reason for this, but I am looking for a way for Aperature to "extract" this existing metadata.
    I'm on Aperature 1.5.6 -- v. 2.0 is on order.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Lost my referenced masters after update 3.0.1

Dear all, after the update to 3.01 a few hours ago I have no more access to my referenced masters.
When I try to open Photoshop or other plug-ins there is an error message.
After having so much trouble with the update from A2 to A3 whilst getting them fixed with your help here, I`m looking forward to waste another week-end.
    Actions so fare done:
    shutdown and restart, no progress
cmd + alt restart, no progress
recover latest update from time machine gets me a library file which is 1/3 of the size of the original lib (11GB vs. 33.3GB). No pictures can be seen, only colored stripes, activity window showing me that the program reworks 44.000 objects. I`m not very optimistic to get my library back.
    Any other ideas.
    Regards
    TikTok101

I'm having a similar issue, my refrenced images (stored on a network drive) are fine but my managed images (stored in the aperture library) are missing. I have the previews but not the images.
I have repaired and restored my library niether have worked
I also restored my hard drive using time machine to A2 and the images are still missing

  • Contracts for services without service masters - updating material group

    Hi all
I have some contracts for services where the services themselves are not linked to service masters. If the material group is updated in the contract at item level, this change is not being applied to the service lines. When the services are pulled through to a purchasing document the original material group / G/L allocation is being used rather than the updated one.
This issue also occurs if a new contract is set up but the services are copied from an existing contract. The services adopt the material group of the original contract rather than the new one.
Any ideas on how this can be overcome?
    Many thanks

Business workaround implemented since was unable to resolve.

  • Recent Aperture Update Not Exporting IPTC Info?

Has anyone else noticed that when exporting an image from the most recent update of Aperture, the exported image/jpeg no longer contains any of your IPTC Metadata? Facebook sees none of the captions nor does WordPress. These two issues alerted me to check info etc. from within Preiew and nothing is showing up. Nada, zilch, zero. No copyright info. no photog info, nothing. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but can others check for Metadata IPTC info on export and report back? Thanks.

Problem partially solved but still wondering about the PNG issue.
    Jim,
PNG is a great lossless image format, but afaik, there is no standard how to embed metadata in png files.
