IPv6 DNS server
Hi,
i just bought the server edition of Mac OSX 10.9.1. When i look into the DNS Server konfiguration i see only support for IPv4, not IPv6.
Is this not supported or a hidden feature i must enable?
The OS X Server 3.0.2 GUI does allow you to enter IPv6 addresses for systems in the DNS server settings. I have mine all setup that way and it mostly works just fine apart from one rather strange thing which I detailed here.
Note that when you are adding a new system or addign an IP address for an existign system the grey 'example' address that is presented is always an IPv4 one (10.0.0.1) but you can just enter (or paste in) an IPv6 address and it will work just fine.

I originally posted this question to the community section and was advised to post it here. Please bear with me as this will be a long post. I'm including the scenarios involving this reoccurring issue, the trouble shooting steps I've already
taken and the results of several diagnostic tools and logs.
I have a Sony VAIOS VPCEBB33FM lap top since 2011. I have had this issue on an off for a long time. I'm at my wit's end. Any new insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Scenario Details
1) Some times it's on and off through out the day, sometimes it won't work all day, and once in a while it will work fine for the entire day.
2) I've had this issue across several wireless services, Clear Network accessed with WiMax, Library Wi-fi, Comcast cable internet using wireless router and Wi-fi, and Comcast Xfinity Wi-Fi, to name a few examples.
3) Other devices in the household or library will work with no problems such as my smart phone or my roommates' laptops or desktop computers.
4) Once in a while, the built-in wireless adapter is not found and I have to reinstall the driver. Also the diagnostic tool has had to reset my adapter on an increasing basis.
5) I had my hard drive replaced in December 2014 and my system restored from the System Restore disks that came with it when I bought the laptop. Even though I've been online on an infrequent basis it worked just fine for a while. Now that
I've been online a bit more I'm having the same issues again.
Below are my attempts at trouble shooting so far but I still have not been able to consistently resolve my DNS issues
1) Restarting my adapter
2) Turning off my laptop and removing the power supply for 5-10 minutes before turning it back on.
3) Using the IP Config in Command Prompt
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
4) Using the NetSh reset in Command Prompt and restarting my laptop
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset
ipconfig /flushdns
[restart laptop]
5) Configuring the TCP/IP in several settings
Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.
I have used the following settings:
a) Obtain an DNS server address automatically
b) OpenDNS
208 67 222 222
208 67 220 220
c) Google DNS
8 8 8 8
8 8 4 4
6) Updating the driver for my Intel Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6250 AGN and Intel Centrino(R) WIMAX 6250 from the Intel website previous having my laptop wiped clean in 2014. It still did not resolve the issue. My laptop
manufacturer as not come up with an driver update for my adapter since 2010. I haven't tried to update the adapter driver from Intel's website since having my laptop repaired due to the fact that Intel strongly recommending using the manufacturer's updates
instead and frankly it didn't make much of a difference when I did it the first time.
7) The last one I've tried as of today is going into Services and changing the start up type to automatic for the following:
Computer Browser [changed from manual to automatic]
DHCP Client [already set to automatic]
DNS Client [already set to automatic]
Network Connections [already set to automatic]
Network Location Awareness [changed from manual to automatic]
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) [already set to automatic]
Server [already set to automatic]
TCP/IP Netbios helper [already set to automatic]
Workstation [already set to automatic]
...and I'm still having DNS issues.
My only guessing are that my laptop came with a lemon adapter that needs to be replaced, some advanced setting(s) that I'm not aware off, or my firewall/anti-virus is interfering. I've used Symmantic Anti-virus and Firewall in the past and currently
Avast Anti-Virus with Microsoft Network Firewall. I've had DNS issues with both anti-virus/firewall set ups.

Server 2008 R2 IPv6 DNS not responding correctly
I've finally gotten around to enabling ipv6 however my clients are unable to resolve dns names when its enabled. Also not all computers and server's are running ipv6. Is there anyway I can get the ipv6 address of the dns server to respond with the ipv4 address
if the name doesnt reslove to a ipv6 address.
Here is an example of the issue

I have implemented IPv6 on my home network and I am using Windows Firewall with IPSec to secure connections from foreign networks to my home network.
I configured a NRPT with generic rules for my domain so my client is using the home DNS-Server to resolve names of computers on my home network. This is working quite good so far but I it seems like the foreign client does not register his own
global IPv6 on the home DNS-Server.
When i run ipconfig /registerdns the list of servers to which the update has been sent to is empty (<?>) while the DNS-Server list does not mention the DNS-Server configured using NRPT. So my very simple question is: How can I configure my Client to
register DNS based on the NRPT or a static list of DNS-Servers?Hi,
Does the FQDN of the foreign client match the NRPT rule?
Please make sure that the FQDN of the foreign client matches the NRPT rule. Then when the client try to send a update packet, it will be redirect to the internal DNS server.

New HP LaserJet Pro MFP M127fw network connection impacts DNS server of my ISP

I have deliverd new HP LaserJet Pro M127fw to my client who have 3 PC-s Win7 64bit, one 4 port switch, and one TP-link ISDN modem-router.
I have installed the printer over network and everything is done well. Printer is working in printing/scanning/fax/ and copy.
In few hurs local ISP has called and said that his DNS server is impacted by something from local LAN. After investigating, i have fount that printer is doing impact to DNS of ISP. When i remove LAN cable from printer, everything is fine with network
I have installed new frimware from HP.com. also I have change Admin pass. The new up to date software is installed.
Still have problem, and no solution. For now printer is working with USB connection, but that is not a option.

I see that you are having issues with the printer connected by a Ethernet cable to the network, the printer is impacting the DNS of ISP. I would like to help.
Turn the IPv6 off on the printer to see if that will help.
Go to Setup, Network Setup, Network Services, IPv6 and turn it off.
This is a Consumer product and has been proving to work with a direct connection to a router.
I noticed in your post that you are also using a switch, which could possible cause other conflicts.

Dnsmasq sends out its own ip as dns-server dhcp option

I configured dnsmasq to look into /etc/resolv.conf (well, that's actually default behavior) and use that to specify dns server when replying to client dhcp requests.
However, it sends out its own ip instead, which is *not cool*.

2 dhcp that answers fastest with a 'offer' will win. A delay is configurable (but changes nothing
about the root scenario were the fastest will win)
Note that if the scopes overlap on the servers, they might not lease out all the addresses in the scope.
I would enlarge the scope as you will want to fence against unavailability of one of the servers (or a network connection for that matter). you currently have more addresses leased out than any set of two of your servers can offer.

Bug in 15.1(3)T3 when trying to add an IPv6 name-server?
I have an 877 that I have configured with IPv4 & IPv6 (via a tunnel broker). I also VPN into this using VPDN with Windows 7 clients. I have configured the VPN for IPv6 and this is working well. Unfortunately an IPv6 name-server isn't being sent to the VPN client so I tried adding the IPv6 name servers to the 877 and it won't accept them. I think this is a bug as I can add them on a Catalyst 3560 I have running 15.0(1)SE.

Is this a known bug and is it fixed in any other releases?
AndyI managed to work around my issue by configuing both IPv6CP for address assignment to the client and DHCPv6 relay to supply DNS (and other) information. See the IPV6 Dial Access thread - https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2127028?tstart=0
I am not sure this is the final configuration as it appears there is the possibility DNS will find its way into IPv6CP - http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-huang-ipv6cp-options-00

Should my DNS server be talking to the internet?
I have the DNS service running on my OSX server in order to use Open Directory and server-based home folders. To use these server-based home folders I have to put the IP address of the server in the "DNS Server" entry on all the machines in Network Preferences.
Because the workstations here would seem to be going to the file server for DNS, do I need to open ports on my router or something so that the server can provide this info? I'm having some weird email issues with emails not arriving in a timely manner (inter-office via the internet, some arrive days late) and slow response times in Safari (page takes a while to start loading, and then loads very quickly once server found) so I'm wondering if this is what's causing it.
Any hints appreciated. Thanks!If you only use your own DNS on both server and LAN clients (you should with your setup of using the same domainname internally - a bit "ugly" but it works) you need to also setup any external services IP numbers such as any mail and web servers (and others).
It wasn't me who set it up like this, but I'm stuck with it! What do you mean when you say to "setup any external services IP numbers"? DO you mean I need to tell the server where to find the mail server so that it finds it more easily? Where do I put them? And would it just be the mail server address, i.e. I assume I don't need to put in every website we want to access? No, that would be silly... but then... who knows.
I would add forwarders (your ISP DNSes) to /etc/named.conf and turn off IPv6.
In theory I know about these unix style text files, but do I need to be logged in as root to see them? I can't see the /etc directory and searching for named.conf brings up nothing. Also, I turned off IPv6 on the server and shortly after someone with a server based home folder got a message sayiing that they'd lost connection to all the mounted volumes on that server with "disconnect all". Turning IPv6 back on made that message go away so I don't want to play with that again for the time being!
Is there a way to set these things up without resorting to editing text files? I'm an old-skool mac user and so it's a bit scary. I should have made that clear from the beginning. Thanks! -
DNS Issues, can't set static DNS server
I have an Airport Extreme (which I'll call the router). It has an IPv6 tunnel (to Hurricane Electric), so it hands out IPv4 DHCP and announces an IPv6 network as well. The DNS servers configured on the router are OpenDNS'.
My Apple TV 2 is connected via wired Ethernet to the router. It was using a DHCP address provided by the router, which made the DNS server the same address as the router. I wanted to manually set the DNS to use my ISP's, so that I can make sure the Netflix streaming issue I have is not a DNS issue.
So I changed the Apple TV to a manual address, and set the DNS server to my ISP's DNS server (Apple TV can only have one DNS server? Odd.)
After I save this, the Network page shows the correct manual IP, mask, and router, but the DNS Address is an IPv6 address (one that belongs to my network, but the entire address isn't visible), not the one I set. When I Configure TCP/IP again, and I reach the DNS Address page, the first digit of the existing address is "20", and the rest of the digits are "0". Interesting note as well: if I press Down, the number will increment to 19, and so on, but if I press Up, it changes to 0. Obviously the UI isn't designed for IPv6 addressing, but there's an IPv6 address in there nevertheless.

I have tried to set the DNS Address multiple times now, and have restarted the Apple TV. The IPv6 DNS Address persists.After 16 hours of working i don´t have seen this easy solution. I had tried with Internet Explorer and Opera but finaly i have need to use Firefox.

I am getting "dns server not responding"
I am staying in a hotel and my 3gs iphones keep getting "dns server not responding" my computers work fine in my room. My iphones don't but if I walk out in the hallway the iphones work fine. Help?
Found what was the problem on my configuration.
Since NLB VIP did not respond when traffic was going from other networks (Internet included) i had to reconfigure NLB from unicast to multicast. Then thing started to work but i had DNS resolution error.
Solution:
A BUG! When you change NLB cluster type, ipv6 that is configured on it gets removed so you have to enter it again. That's the same IPV6 IP under Infrastructure servers - DNS that ends with :3333::1 for your .domain.local -

Interestingly whenever I add a static ipv6 entry, I get the SOA as an answer instead of the actual AAAA record. But from the router itself, it can use the statically defined hosts just fine.

all of its IPs that the service is listening on. To change this behaviour you can tell the DNS service to only register individual IPS in the registry:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNS\Parameters
Add a Reg_Multi_SZ called "PublishAddresses" and specify the list of IPs
In our case we added just one of the three configured IPs and from then on the server only registered this address and not the other ones.

DNS Server not working. Start Time "Not Available"
I lost power to my server last night in a power outage.
Today the DNS Server doesn't seem to be working. I verified that my server's IP is the primary name server on the clients, however all lookups are going to the secondary (public) name server and therefore giving the public IP address for LAN services.
To test it, I typed in Terminal (both on a client machine and on the server itself) "nslookup [myinternaldomain.com] [mydnsserverip]" and get ";; connection timed out; no servers could be reached"
When I load up Server Admin, I see that the DNS service is running but for Start Time it says "Not Available".
Tried stopping and starting the service.Thanks for that link. It looks about at my level so I'll have a read tonight. I am on 10.6.8

Clients lose only DNS server. HELP!
Hello,
I've encountered a problem these days with my dns server. My clients gets a 192.168.0.1 dns server, instead of the server dhcp/dns 192.168.74.3. I verified the dhcp/dns server and everything seems to be ok. This happens all random. When I disable/enable
the LAN or use the ipconfig /release /renew command the everything works fine for half an hour or so then it's changed back to that fake dns. Any advice?

When the DNS server changes to 192.168.0.1, does ipconfig /all tell you that the IP address configuration currently in use is assigned by DHCP? If so, then what is the DHCP server that assigned this configuration?

If you can identify the DHCP server that is providing this DNS server to you, then you can shut it down. This might be a rogue DHCP server on the network, probably using itself as a DNS server.

Moving from Exchange 2007 to 2013 (leaving the DNS Server for it's own dedicated server)
Hello! I am quite new to Exchange and Server management in general. I will do my best to explain my situation.
I am looking to move my Exchange server off of our DNS server. When we installed them on the same server, we did not have the funds to buy 2 separate servers. I am told that it is best to separate the two. I have followed the Microsoft instructions for installing
the prerequisites for Exchange 2013 on a 2012 R2 server, and i am at the point where it wants me to configure AD LDS. As I have active directory running on the current server, I was a little hesitant to just install it without understanding what i am doing.
After the AD LDS is configured, I believe i can move forward with installing Exchange 2013 (all 3 roles will be hosted on the new server), export the mailboxes from 2007 server and import them into the new Exchange 2013 server. After 2013 is up and stable,
I plan on removing 2007 from the old server (DNS server).
What are my next steps after importing the mailboxes? Am i missing important details that I need to change or migrate?
My biggest fear is that nothing works after the installation and moving the mailboxes over. For that case, it makes sense to keep 2007 installed as a fallback for when my installation fails and all i have lost is just my time :)
Current Server:
Windows Server 2008 Standard (64 bit)
1. Roles: Active Directory, DNS, IIS

New Server:
Windows 2012 R2 Server

In the first example, he is moving everything (domain controller, exchange, users, etc) onto a different server and decommissioning it.I've been told that it would be better practice to keep the domain and exchange on 2 different servers. Is this true?
I go to run commands like:
.\setup /PrepareAD /OrganizationName: orgname /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms
on the new exchange server, as a prerequisite and it doesnt recognize the command - even after following the steps before. Is this because the new server is not a domain controller? does it have to be? What are the best practices for setting up a server(s)
with exchange + domain controller?
