Ipv6 lookback address in hosts file
Hi,
After enabling IPv6 on the Solaris server and rebooting the machine we see that Ipv6 loopback address (::1) is added as the first entry above Ipv4 loopback address. Is there a way to force adding Ipv6 loopback address as the last enty in the /etc/hosts file?
Regards
-murali
My Solaris 10 U8 10/09 box doesn't have IPv6 enabled but has that entry too. Loopback addresses have historically been the first listed in this file. Changing the behavior would mean changing the code somehow. I don't know of a way to do this For what reason do you need the IPv6 loopback at the end of this file?

[Solved] hosts file with ipv6 disabled
Hello community!
So I have disabled ipv6, as it was causing various issues and Comcast has not yet implemented ipv6 in my area. Disabling was no problem, but nowhere can i find information regarding whether or not to keep the ipv6 line in the hosts file. Should I comment it out?
For clarity I am referring to the ::1 line. Will commenting it out be problematic, or will keeping it be problematic, or does it not really matter? I know having an improperly configured hosts file can cause all sorts of network issues, so I am very curious.
Right now I have it commented out, and I have not noticed any real problems, but I also have a Realtek wireless card using rtl8192ce, which is not the most stable driver/connection. Thus my connection is kind of intermittently crappy. So I am curious if I am making my connection crappier than it was before.
Thanks in advance!
Edit: Of course as soon as I posted this, I found an answer. The Debian wiki recommends commenting it out when completely disabling ipv6. So to those who at least read my post, thanks!
Last edited by WonderWoofy (2012-08-19 20:19:44)@WonderWoofy,
Do you have a link for the Debian wiki? I'd like to understand the reasoning.
To be honest, I didn't even realise that line was for ipv6. Since I've disabled it in sysctl.conf, I should probably consider commenting it out, too. Right now, I seem to be loading firewall modules for ipv6, mind, which seems like slightly more security than can be strictly necessary if the thing is disabled...
@ghen,
It isn't, that I know of, a matter of "figuring it out correctly". Having ipv6 enabled can screw up ipv4 connections. Having it enabled prevents me from connecting to the internet at all on one of the networks I use. As I understand it, a properly configured network shouldn't do this but when the official IT support people say the problem is that you have ipv6 enabled, you don't have much choice. (And it isn't as if there's anything to be gained by having it enabled.) -
How to change host file?
Hi guys,
I would like to install 9iAS 9.0.2 Oracle Portal on my XP machine.
Problem:
My host like this:
127.0.0.1 localhost
AND my computername contains an UNDERSCORE.
How can I change the hosts file? And how must it look like? I have no fix IP Adress at the moment.
Thank you for help.
cheers,
Berndin short...
You'll need a static IP address
your host file will look like
127.0.0.1 localhost
10.1.1.10 www.server.com www
where 10.1.1.10 is your static IP, and the www.server.com is the name for which you want to access your portal site. -
What is the real ip address to the apple server? Someone changed the host file in windows/system32/drivers/ect, and now I can't do a restore on my iPhone 3gs
"You have to change your router's IP address to be able to access it. It will not give you the internet."
I'm not sure what that means Richard, but I did change the router's IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.5.1- isn't that what you meant in your first post. I know that isn't reflected in my screen capture that I took last night, but I did do that this morning after I read your post.
"Log on to your router and change two settings.
Change the setting in Setup from PPPoE to Automatic Configuration-DHCP and click on save.
Click on Advance Routing and change the setting from Gateway to Router then click on save."
I did this and still same results as far as I can tell. Can't get online through the router.
"Click on MAC address clone under setup tab ... click enable & click clone ...click save settings ... Check the IPaddress under WAN page ....
If getting IP in public range .... try going online ...."
I tried this- at least to the part about checking the IP address under WAN. I assume you mean the WAN page in the modem setup- nothing looked any different after trying what you suggested, and I'm not really sure where I would be "getting IP in public range" or what that means.
I'm about to give up and just buy a new router to see if I can get the same lack of results with a different one. My ISP maintains that everything is set up correctly on their end and really can't do anything more for me. The Modem works and is set up correctly and they can give tech support for a router.
Here's what my basic setup looks like now:

Here's what the advanced tab looks like now:

Modem setup looks the same

Client machine requires "hosts file" include IP-address of server machine??
Hi. all.
I am using real IP address in tnsnames.ora at client machines.
The client machine(windows)'s hosts file should have ip-address of server machine?
Without hosts file(ip-address of server), tnsping is always OK, but
sqlplus returns error from time to time.
With hosts file(ip-address of server), sqlplus returns no error.
The database is 2-node RAC database on windows2003.
Thanks in advance.
Best Regards. If you've got server side load balancing then the clients can get a redirect to one of your RAC nodes when it tries to connect. This redirect will be to a host name (at least thats what I get with our RAC nodes) - so you will definitely need the to be able to resolve the RAC node names. Resolution through the local hosts file or DNS doesn't really matter.

Solaris10.. need to remove "::1 localhost" from /etc/hosts file
I know i have IPV6 disabled (through install options) but i still see "::1 localhost" entry in the /etc/hosts file.. This is related to localhost with IPV6 address ::1.. why it is still there.. what is it's impact.. how can i remove it if i decide to remove..
Thanks, appreciate help.
S.It could be there if you linked /etc/hosts (or /etc/inet/hosts to /etc/inet/ipnodes). Or recreated the hosts-file from ipnodes (or it could be there by default and removed by my jumpstart, which means i would be unaware of it :-)
And no, you don't need it if you are not running IPv6, in fact removing it will eliminate a few error messages.
On all non-IPv6 systems i install i link /etc/inet/ipnodes to /etc/inet/hosts, in order to eliminate errors when changing IP addresses of the host and odd resolv-conflicts (which also removes any reference to ::1), and so far i have never experienced any issue with that.

Can't update iOS 8 on my iPhone5 through iTunes on Windows 8 (error 3004, 3194). Updated host file, opened port 80, 443; turned off security system and firewall, etc. But nothing works. How to solve this problem?
Hi the_mad_movies,
It seems like this article will be the best option for addressing this issue:
Error 3194, Error 17, or "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"

Since localhost is already stated here:

For now I've deleted the redundant localhost entry, since it seems to be there for windows compatability.
Is there any harm in leaving that entry?
Last edited by verve (2008-11-29 04:08:29)Not as far as I know.
It probably just re-encounters the localhost hostname and either dumbly re-adds it to the internal table or ignores it. In any case, no logically discernible harm done.

UNABLE TO RETRIEVE THE CLIENT IP ADDRESS AND HOST NAME OF A PORTAL USER
I'm trying to retrive the client IP address and host name of a portal user
trying to access a portal page using APIs:
PortletRenderRequest portletRequest =
(PortletRenderRequest)request.getAttribute(HttpCommonConstants.PORTLET_RENDER_REQUEST);
HttpServletRequest servletRequest =
(HttpServletRequest)portletRequest.getAttribute(HttpCommonConstants.SERVLET_REQUEST);
String l_szClientIPAddress = servletRequest.getRemoteAddr();
String l_szClientHost = servletRequest.getRemoteHost();
but i found that for all portal users on different machines IP addresses, the
returned IP is the same for all which is Portal middle tier IP address.
So how can retrive the IP addess of a portal user trying to access a portal
page ?Brijesh,
Do you mean how to see hostname/ip address of client requests processed by the server? If yes, depending on what's your front ending component - Web Cache or OHS, you can configure the access log format to have this information recorded in either of these component's access log file.
For Web Cache access log file, refer this:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_19/caching.1012/b14046/diagnostics.htm#sthref2090
For OHS access log file, refer this:
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_19/web.1012/b14007/servlog.htm#sthref439
By default, both Web Cache and OHS are configured to use Common Log Format (CLF) that does record hostname/ip address so if you haven't made any changes to log format, this info is already there for you. Look for $ORACLE_HOME/webcache/logs/access_log file for Web Cache and $ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Apache/logs/access_log file for OHS.
Thanks

The new entries made in /etc/hosts file is not picked up by Weblogic.
Hi All,
I have come across a scenario where i have changed the IP address of a particular host name (which was already present in etc/hosts) to point to a new IP address.
After i did this change, when i do a telnet test to the same hostname, i can see it is getting connected to the new IP to which i changed. But my service which is deployed on weblogic 10.0 still keeps sending requests to the old IP which i commented in the etc/hosts file instead of the new IP address.
My question is will weblogic cache the data in etc/hosts file somewhere?
Thanks in anticipation..
MadhuApplication deployed on weblogic server will pick the IP address of the server on which the application is deployed .
IP address or listen address for weblogic server can be configured in 3 different ways :
Listen Address : Blank --- This means that the server will listen to all the interfaces available on the Machine .
Listen Address : IP address or Hostname --- The server will listen only to the specified IP address or the hostname .
Listen Address : : localhost --- The server will be listening only on localhost address and will not be accessible remotely .
Please check what it the listen address specified at you end.
Thanks,

When I open terminal and do sash [email protected] it says warning rsa key not recognized to go to known-hosts file which ican not grt into I have download pico but am not sure how to launch it or what I ave to do.
sibeen, please stop starting new posts when you are really just continuing the first post. "Reply" to one of your existing posts when you are really just continuing the same question. If I have not lost count, you have posted 3 times about this same ssh rsa host key issue, and Linc Davis and I have been trying to keep track of all the details, but with it spread out across multiple new posts, it is difficult.
I'm guessing as you again forgot to post the actual error (I'm starting to wonder if you are testing how well Linc and I can guess at your problem ). Anyway, I'm guessing that you managed to delete the $HOME/.ssh/known_hosts file, and now when you try to ssh to 10.0.0.2 it wants to add the remote system's host rsa key into a newly created known_hosts file.
The authenticity of host '[10.0.0.2]:22([10.0.0.2]:22)' can't be established.
RSA key fingerprint is xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx.
Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?
Generally the command ask if you want to do this, yes or no. You type "yes" and your Mac memorizes the remote system's host rsa key.
If this is not the warning message you are seeing, then as Linc has requested, please post the exact error (feel free to mask put the actual key or usernames or IP addresses, but keep the words.
If you are still getting the original error from 3 posts ago, then I would not try editing $HOME/.ssh/known_hosts, and instead just delete the file, and when you get a message like I have posted above, answer it with "yes".
WIth respect to pico, Mac OS X already has pico installed, so there was no need to download it from anywhere. However, most people just use 'nano' which has essentially replaced 'pico' as an easy to use Terminal based text editor. But like I said, I think you will be happier if you just delete the known_hosts file and get on with your ssh operations.
Finally, I think in your 2nd post you indicated you tried deleting a file that had a dash in the name (known-hosts) instead of an underscore (known_hosts). If that was just a typo when you entered your post, and you were really getting you cannot delete a directory, then something is seriously wrong, or you accidentally allowed a space to be inserted between .ssh and known_hosts. Personally, I'm going with you actually entered a space and the 'rm' command thought you wanted to delete the .ssh directory instead of $HOME/.ssh/known_hosts. I could be wrong, but using copy and paste to post actual Terminal screen output as well as the command you entered would be very helpful to anyone trying to provide useful information. In other words, help us help you. -
Editing etc\hosts file on windows xp for apps. problem post installation.
Hi all,
I was able to install 11.5.10.2 apps on my win xp prof machine. During that process I had to edit the etc/hosts file in windows directory as a work around for that domain name field during installation. Also added the primary DNS suffix as 'suneel.com' . I gave the domain name as 'suneel.com' during installation. The RapidWiz is taking localhost as the system name and referring to this system as localhost.suneel.com, though the actual system name is 'websoft-xp' .
The host file on Apps machine has the following entries:
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 localhost.suneel.com suneel.com
127.0.0.1 websoft-xp.suneel.com
So when I connect to apps login server from other systems in lan, I've to edit their hosts file and add an entry for localhost.suneel.com to point to its ip address or else the apps throws an error after logging in as operations/welcome using a different url say 192.168.1.4:8000 . Is there a way to get around this issue?
More over I'm not able connect to VIS db from other systems. The oracle clients give an error 'No listner' at this address. (The original listener was listening at localhost.suneel.com:1521). So I tried to create a new listerner from Net Manager that actually listens at websoft-xp (the real system name) but it throws me an error 'A valid log file is required' while saving the network configuration and prevents me from saving the network configuration.
Did I do something wrong with the hosts file during installation or did i miss any entries in that file thats causing this? Any solutions for the above problems will be appreciated?
Thanks
Suneel

suneelgvWell I tried that option but for some reason it didn't work for me. It kept giving the tns:connection closed error. Then I searched in metalink and found this note : Note:333158.1
It suggested setting tcp.validnode_checking = no
in sqlnet.ora. in
F:\oracle\visdb\9.2.0\network\admin\VIS_websoft-xp
And it works. Hope this helps someone facing a similar problem. Good luck.
BTW how do I run autoconfig?

Why blocking sites using Hosts file isn't working?
Hello
I need to block a few websites on my home computer. Did a quick search and found out I had to work with the hosts files. So opened up Notepad, ran it as Admin and then opened Hosts and at the bottom added ' 127.0.0.1 facebook.com' then saved the file. But
facebook is still opening when I go to the page.
can someone tell me why using the Hosts file isn't working?
I did read somewhere that it might have something to do with security features on my system. FYI, I m using a trial version of Norton Anti Virus and I am running a Windows 7 machine.
Thanks. Any help would be appreciated. Are you sure your entry was in fact saved to the hosts file? The hosts file on my computer blocks unwanted sites.

Asigning a name to a host without using hosts file
Hi, we have developed a rich client application that connects to a websphere Appserver in order of using ejb. This app is intended to work in different places, connecting to a different Appserver in each place. When the service locator of our client app connects to the appserver to obtain the references to the ejbs, the server returns some kind of URL that contains the name of the machine defined
in the hosts file of the server. The problem is that if this name is not in the host file of the client machine the application crashes because it cannot communicate with the appserver. We have a large number of client machines and we would like to avoid having to modify the host file of every one of them.
Is there a way to tell the application to assign an IP to a hostname at runtime?I think that you can directly use IP addresses instead of the host names.
If your are in a lan you will be able to use the compulter name of the hosts too.
Also if you get proper DNS setup in your network you will be able to allocate domain names to your hosts and reffer them by their domain name. And the clients will be able to find the hosts through DNS lookup
