Ipw2200-fw startup bash
Whenever I boot up my computer, I must run
ip link set eth1 up
wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -i eth1 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
dhcpcd eth1
or the wifi card wont work. The only solution I can think of is to make a bash script containing these commands and having it run automatically on startup. How would one go about doing this?
When I try to connect to my network, it just says

This happened occasionally when I did it manually. Whats the problem?

GTK2 apps crashing left & right
Hello, all--
This has got me tearing my hair. Lately I've been having GTK2 apps crash in response to very normal actions. The problem seems to be related to libgnomevfs and/or libxml2, but I have no idea what exactly might be wrong. I've tried google, and found several posts about the problem, but no solutions.
Anyway, some points that should be noted:
* I have two machines running Arch Linux, with *mostly* the same packages installed. The
crashes happen only on one of them.
* These are not random occurrences. There is a clear pattern of safe actions that never cause
crashes, and dangerous actions that always cause crashes.
* My system is up to date. I ran pacman -Syu about 1 hour ago.
Anyway, the following is a transcript of what happens with 4 apps: Firefox, Thunderbird, Bluefish, and Epiphany. I show the Arch package versions, and the messages output on startup and when I performed an 'unsafe' action. You'll note that they all put out a symbol lookup error for xmlNewTextReaderFilename.
Thanks in advance for any tips!

Hi,
I am afraid I have a stupid question to post here...
I have lost a startup script that is invoked everytime I run my bash shell. This script starts a licence manager I no longer require or have, so everytime I run terminal an error message occurs. I could ignore this, as I get normal operation of the shell of course, however it is really annoying so I need to track down this file. I have tried using the grep command to recursively search through my harddrive for the appropriate invoking string. However to no avail.
When I login as another user then the script doesn't run, leading me to believe it is in my own home directory. However the usual ~/.bash_profile or ~/.bashrc are not present in my home directory.
Any tips would be appreciated.
PowerBook G4 1.5GHz Mac OS X (10.3.9)Open the Terminal app then type the following:
grep ExecutionString ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Terminal.plist
If grep returns <key>ExecutionString</key> then the script is run by the Terminal's preference- com.apple.Terminal.plist. You can edit the preference removing the key and string value or trash your com.apple.Terminal.plist. -
Solaris 11 - run a simple BASH script on computer startup
I need to have a simple BASH script run on my Solaris 11 machine automatically whenever the computer (re)starts. It should be run with root permissions and after the computer has fully booted. What is the easiest way to do that?
Thank you
DusanHi user9368043
Yes, that should be right, and be intended this way.
See /etc/rc3.d/README and the following part from smf(5):
Legacy Startup Scripts
Startup programs in the /etc/rc?.d directories are executed
as part of the corresponding run-level milestone:
/etc/rcS.d milestone/single-user:default
/etc/rc2.d milestone/multi-user:default
/etc/rc3.d milestone/multi-user-server:default
Your question concerning upgrading to Solaris 11.1:
In the Gnome menus, you should look for (and start)
System --> Administration --> Update Manager
Let it do its work. It will give you a new boot environment, containing Solaris 11.1. Possibly, you have to perform upgrading twice. With "beadm activate", see beadm(1M), you can go back to Solaris 11.0 whenever you want.
"Local" parts of your zfs root pool, like /usr/local, home directories, /root, and so on, should be in separated file systems, and be mounted outside the root pool before upgrading. They are availlable then from any boot environment, and will not be duplicated. See more in zfs(1M), zpool(1M).
I strongly recommend upgrading. Solaris 11.1 is great. -
Powerbook G3 Tiger startup in BASH?????
My PB G3 with Tiger has suddenly started up in BASH and I have no clue how to get back to Tiger. Can someone help please?
Many thanks,
DavidIf OS 9 is functioning that sounds promising as on OS X software problem.
Before you reinstall Tiger, have you tried running Disk Repair on the HD to re-establish the file catalogue? It may be quicker than doing an Archive and Install.
You may be familiar with this process, but just to save time, I'll post it anyway in case you are not.
Repairing Disk from install volume
Insert the Tiger Install Disk 1 into the drive and then select Restart; when you hear the chime hold down C key until the apple logo appears.
This will take you to the installation software, but you do not want to install.
Select your language, then go up to the top menu bar to Utilities and navigate to the Disk Utilities application.
Select the start up drive, then follow the instructions in the First Aid pane where you can click on Repair Disk.
If it finds errors, repeat the process until it reports no errors.
After these repairs, quit the application, and restart normally.
Once restarted normally run Repair Permissions. from the Disk Utility application found on your hard drive in Application/Utilities.
Finally, how much space do you have spare on your HD? It is recommended that you need 10 - 15% of total HD to be spare capacity so to avoid problems. If your HD exceeds this then cart some data off it on to CD's for example.

[SOLVED] Best place to execute a single bash command at startup?
Hello everyone,
I have a very simple problem, but I cannot find a simple solution! I am trying to use the solarized color scheme with the URxvt terminal. I added all of the color definitions to ~/.Xresources, but when I try to use URxvt after rebooting, it is pink! Apparently this is because ~/.Xresources is not loaded automatically, it must be done manually with the command
xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
Indeed, URxvt is pink before running this command but looks how I expect afterward. My problem has become: Where can I put this single command so that I don't have to type it every time I log in? I am using openbox and LXDE, so I tried putting it in ~/.config/openbox/autostart, like this:
#! /bin/sh
xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources &
I set the executable bit and rebooted, but this doesn't help. Neither does renaming the script "autostart.sh". I also tried putting this command in: ~/.xinitrc, ~/.xsession, /etc/xdg/openbox/autostart, and .bashrc, none of which worked.
It seems that I am missing something. I am confused and very annoyed that there isn't an obvious place to put this simple command!

I get a graphical login, which I take it means that I am using a display manager (which I believe in my case is LXDM). Putting everything into ~/.Xdefaults has technically resolved the issue, thanks to Head_on_a_Stick for their suggestion! However, there is still one thing I would like to resolve. When I login and try to launch URxvt for the first time, I get a pink window in the default geometry. When I launch it a second time, everything works (I get solarized colors and my specified geom.) Why does this happen? Is there any way to get urxvt to work the way I want the first time?
If it is indeed LXDM you use, ~./xinitrc is not sourced, so putting the command there should have no effect. As ANOKNUSA said, this shouldn't be a question you answer with 'I think'. You set it up (DMs don't automagically appear or work without intervention), so you are supposed to know. If you don't know, it can mean that you are forgetfull, don't pay attention to your system (trust me, not a good strategy) or you don't use Arch. In the last case you'll have to go to the relevant forum as this forum is Arch support only.
As for your question about getting urxtv to work the first time, you should look into the logs/error messages generated by urxvt. Maybe you can find something there as there is not much to go on here. I still can't figure out why the first config didn't work, so maybe the problems are related. -
Hello Arch-Community.
I today tried out Arch Linux, and wow, i have to say i was quite impressed. Easy to install, easy to use - till now. Well, it still is.
It is the first distribution where i got the ipw driver working "out of the box". Thumbs up for this ...
Anyway, there is one problem left:
If i receive the IP-Address of my WLAN with DHCP, starting the network and the interface during bootup, i have the following problem:
- The Network goes up (i'm using AcerHK to activate the sw-radio switch).
- I get an IP-Address
- I can ping, i can surf
- Just for some secs / about a minute. After this, my wireless network disappears of "ifconfig", well, as if it never received an Address.wlan_eth1=lly, the interface has already been working.
If i boot up normally, activating the drivers (acerhk, ipw), and getting the IP manually with DHCP, it works very fine.
What could this be? I'm using 0.7 (current).
Following additional information:
- AcerHK as sw-switch
- ipw2200 (Intel Centrino 2200BG)
- arch 0.7 (current)
the /etc/conf.d/wireless
wlan_eth1="eth1 mode managed essid LocalGNet"
WLAN_INTERFACES=(eth1)
I added the following information to /etc/rc.conf
eth1="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(lo eth1)
Of course, i made a script loading AcerHK on boot
#!/bin/bash
. /etc/rc.conf
. /etc/rc.d/functions
case "$1" in
start)
stat_busy "Starting AcerHK driver"
if [ ! -f /proc/driver/acerhk/wirelessled ]; then
modprobe acerhk
else
echo "AcerHK driver seems to be already running"
fi
if [ -f /proc/driver/acerhk/wirelessled ]; then
echo 1 > /proc/driver/acerhk/wirelessled
stat_done
else
stat_fail
fi
stop)
stat_busy "Stopping AcerHK driver"
if [ -f /proc/driver/acerhk/wirelessled ]; then
echo 0 > /proc/driver/acerhk/wirelessled
rmmod acerhk
stat_done
else
echo "AcerHK driver seems not to be running"
stat_fail
fi
restart)
$0 stop
sleep 1
$0 start
echo "usage: $0 {start|stop|restart}"
esac
exit 0
Any idea what could cause this? Any suggestions?
STiATOkay, i gave it a shot right now, since i arrived at home.
Compiled 0.19, put the new firmware in the right place.
Still the same.
I think there's nothing wrong with it at all...
The behaviour is like when he wouldn't receive the IP via DHCP, it also drops the interface back to inactive. As if there is no status returend by the dhcpcd at startup time to ifconfig... and so ifconfig drops the interface within 30 secs (dhcp timeout?). i dont know anything of the internals of Arch (yet), since i'm very new to the distribution.

Using launchd to send an email on startup and shutdown
Hello All !
I'd like to get an email whenever my Mac starts up and shuts down, since I have to leave it unattended for quite some long periods of time (and even with the help of a UPS, power goes out anyway...). My Mac runs under Mac OS X Lion.
I found some help on the Internet, mainly from this page : http://www.syntaxtechnology.com/2009/06/email-on-shutdown-and-restart/ , which applies to Linux, and hoped it could work on Mac OS X (I thought at first I could just drop a script in something like /etc/init.d/ or /etc/rc.d/rc5.d but well... we have launchd instead...).
The first method listed in the page above worked well, but sends an email only on startup (for a reminder: you add a line that starts with @reboot in your crontab, and a command that sends directly an email).
I then tried to adapt the second method to Mac OS X, and succeeded partially: I wrote a small script based on what was shown on that page (a start and stop function, start gets called when the script is started, and stop gets called based on a trap on various kill signals, with an infinite wait loop: see below). I also wrote the plist file, loaded it in launchd and rebooted my Mac several times to test everything.
I get an email on each startup (yeah!), but the shutdown mail gets sent only at the next startup. So I guess that postfix gets killed by the shutdown process *before* being able to send my shutdown email :-(
So here are my main questions, if someone can help me:
1. is there a way to precisely call a script during the shutdown process, meaning giving it a priority so it gets called before postfix dies ? (like the rc directories and the naming conventions (KnnScriptName and SnnScriptName) found on some Linux/Unix).
2. is it possible to do that with launchd ? if not, what would be the Mac OS X sanctionned way of doing this ?
Other things:
3. my shell script writing ability is kind of rusty, so maybe I made some "very bad shell writingTM": l'm not sure putting an infinite while loop with a 15 second pause in it is the best way of telling a script to do nothing. There might other things in there that would make an Unix guru jump out of his chair: please tell me :-)
This is my plist:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC “-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN” “http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd”>

Thanks for your help, and any comment :-)
Paul-HenriThanks a lot for your answer, Camelot, even if it sorts of confirm what I suspected. Pinging a machine from an external observer is a solution, but it will also report broken links problems and not only a computer shutting down, and it raises the next tier of problems, general network reliability after individual system reliability. It's something I'll have to look at for sure.
It's weird there isn't any way to access the way the shutdown process works.
One of the commenters (#14) on the page from Syntaxtechnology had a similar problem: he added a "sendmail -q" in his script to force sendmail to go to work and service the queue before shutting down, which I can try, but he also added a delay to the stop process of sendmail, which is something I'm not sure I can do on Mac OS X (and that might disappear one day with one of the OS updates).
Unless there is a way to change the launchd.plist file for postfix and add an ExitTimeOut option in it (I found this idea here : https://discussions.apple.com/message/17229690#17229690 )
Cheers,

HOWTO: Startup/Shutdown Sounds in Openbox
In this tutorial, I will show you how to add startup and shutdown sounds with Openbox, a light-weight window manager. In theory, this should work with any window manager that uses a startup script (or, if you use the startx command, .xinitrc could be used for the same effect); however, I will be focusing on Openbox, so you will have to adapt these instructions for use with other window managers.
We'll start with a quick background story: I was in a "tweaking" mood a few days ago, and I figured I'd try to set up some startup and shutdown noises for use with Openbox. After a few minutes of messing around, I got it working. I searched to see if there were any tutorials like this, and since there weren't, I figured I would share my knowledge--that's what tutorials are for, right?
NOTE: I originally posted this on ubuntuforums.org; therefore, there may be some differences (I tried to fix most of them). Even though I did this on Arch originally, I wrote it targeted toward Ubuntu users. I didn't get much of a response--there must not have been too many Ubuntu/Openbox users looking for that. Please point out any inconsistencies, and I'll fix them as soon as possible.
Now that we have that out of the way, let's get started.
Step 1: Installing the necessary application(s).
First off, we will be using a commandline program called play. It is part of the sox package, so let's install that first (you likely have most of its dependancies already).
# pacman -S sox
If you'd like, you can cd to a directory with music in it and type play name-of-sound-file.extension to test that it is working. If you don't have any files to try it on, you can do this later after downloading your desired sound files in step 3.
I also have sudo set up; you will need to set this up to run the shutdown commands from a script as I have them. There is a section in the ArchWiki that will help in setting it up if you want. As for the commands with sudo in them, you can just run them in a root terminal.
In addition to that, I will be working with obmenu, a program for editing Openbox's menu from a GUI; however, it will work just as well to edit the menu by hand. I assume you already have a preferred method of editing your menu, but if you want to try obmenu, it's only a pacman command away:
# pacman -S obmenu
Step 2: Setting up shutdown privileges.
For this section, I will be adapting a section from a great guide written by urukrama here. We're going to be running a shutdown command from a script, so we need to have it set up to work without any interaction--in this case, that means removing the need for a password for the shutdown command.
To do this, type in the following command into the terminal:
sudo visudo
This will open up the sudoers file, which is used to specifiy user permissions for actions that require root priveleges. For those of you unfamiliar with Vim (I'm with you ), just press i on your keyboard to enter interactive mode, which allows you to edit the file. Then, enter the following line at the end of the file:
%wheel ALL=NOPASSWD:/sbin/shutdown
Then press escape to exit interactive mode. Lastly, type in :wq followed by pressing enter to save and exit. Now you can use the sudo shutdown command without entering a password.
Step 3: Getting the desired sound files.
Now we come to the fun part of the guide--finding the sounds that we want.
There are plenty of startup and shutdown noises floating around the web; I went to gnome- and kde-look to check out theirs (the same are available at both sites). Here's a link to the System Sounds section at gnome-look. You can look through and download the ones that interest you; once you have listened to a few and found one that you like, go on. Just for reference, I chose the Dream pack. It fits very nicely with my current setup and theme.
Step 4: Setting up the shutdown/startup scripts.
If you haven't already (in the last step), extract the sound files from the package that they downloaded in. Then, look through the files and find the startup and shutdown noises. For me, they were titled Dream Intro.ogg and shutdown.ogg, respectively. Move these files into their own folder. I chose ~/.startup--on my Arch install, it was empty. You may want to put it into a different folder/sub-folder, preferably somewhere in your home folder. You can now remove all the other sound files--hypothetically speaking, it probably wouldn't be too hard to get other sounds (such as minimize, maximize, etc., if provided in the sounds package you chose) working with Openbox, but that is beyond the scope of this tutorial. Now, go to the folder in which you placed the startup and shutdown noises. For simplicity's sake, we're going to place the scripts in this same folder.
We're going to be making two scripts here--one for reboot and one for shutdown. Open up your text editor of choice here and enter the following line (replacing the "/path/to/file.extension" with the path to your shutdown sound):
play /path/to/file.extension && sudo shutdown -r now
For me, it looked like this:
play ~/.startup/shutdown.ogg && sudo shutdown -r now
What this does is play the sound file specified and, once that is done, moves on to the reboot process (that's what && does). Save this as reboot.sh. Now make a new file, this time for the actual shutdown. It will be the same as the first except the shutdown command will now be sudo shutdown -h now. Here's what mine looks like:
play ~/.startup/shutdown.ogg && sudo shutdown -h now
Save that one as shutdown.sh. At this point, we have completed the scripts for both shutdown commands. Next, open up your Openbox autostart script (should be in /home/<user>/.config/openbox/autostart.sh, where <user> is your username) with the text editor of your choice. You probably already have a few different things in here; if not, it doesn't really matter. Just add the following line to your autostart file (as you can see, I used quotes around this one because this file had a space in its name--you'll want to do the same. You can also use a backslash before the space):
play "/home/<user>/.startup/Dream Intro.ogg"&
Make sure you keep the ampersand (&) in tact; otherwise, the script will wait until the sound is done playing before completing the rest of the processes. I recommend that you place the sound file at the beginning of the script so that it starts first--the way I have it set up, everything is ready to go by the time the login sound ends (sooner, actually). Now that we've come this far, we're almost done.
Step 5: Adding the shutdown options to the Openbox menu.
At this point, the login sound will be working; however, we still need to set up the shutdown sounds. To do this, we will add a section to the Openbox menu that runs the two scripts we made in the last step.
Either open up obmenu or use your preferred text editor and open up menu.xml (should be in ~/.config/openbox/menu.xml). As I said, we will be adding two items: one for rebooting and another for shutting down. In obmenu, you can add a new submenu wherever you want (I chose the bottom of the menu) and name it Power (or whatever else you'd like). The first we'll add is named Restart. For the execute line, add the following:
bash /path/to/reboot.sh
For me, this path is ~/.startup/reboot.sh. As for the second, name it Shut Down and for the execute command put the following:
bash /path/to/shutdown.sh
Again, for me this is ~/.startup/shutdown.sh. Here is what the section in my obmenu looks like:
As for the pure XML, here it is (I replaced my name with <user> ):
<item label="Restart">
<action name="Execute">
<execute>bash /home/<user>/.startup/reboot.sh</execute>
</action>
</item>
<item label="Shut Down">
<action name="Execute">
<execute>bash /home/<user>/.startup/shutdown.sh</execute>
</action>
</item>
With obmenu, just save it, and your menu will be refreshed. When hand-editing the menu.xml file, you have to remember to Reconfigure Openbox (it will be in your menu unless you've removed it).
And with that, you should have working startup and shutdown sounds. You can test it by right clicking on your desktop and selecting one of your new shutdown options. You should have a sound play followed by the normal shutdown routine. Then when your computer starts back up, you will have a pleasant noise after logging on.
I hope that helped you! Please point out any errors that you see, and I'll correct them as soon as possible.Nice tutorial. I was wondering, I noticed you have a games tab. Do you know how to properly execute games. I am trying to get steam games working also Call of duty 4 as tabs under obmenu. Could you help me out?
Thanks! -
Imac freezing on startup, fine in safe mode
Hi there - apologies in advance if I just need to be directed to another thread I've had a look around and can't find what to do now that I'm in safe mode.
My Imac keeps freezing either at the password screen or as soon as I've logged in.
Am I right in thinking that, given that safemode is working without problem, the issue is probably software?
One other thing that might be relevant, I am currently trying to do a time machine backup but it has been stuck on Preparing Backup for about 15 mins now.
I need advice on how I isolate the issue.
Many thanks.1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

I'm having a problem piping the date to dzen2 using the date command in a while loop in bash.
In my startup script I have this line to start the panel and the script to pipe the info:
statusbar | dzen2 -h $PANEL_HEIGHT -dock -ta l -title-name panel -fn $FONT -fg $PANEL_TEXT_LIGHT -bg $PANEL_BG &
and then the statusbar script looks like this:
while true ; do
echo "$(date +%I:%M %p)"
sleep 1
done
That isn't the complete statusbar script, but i've identified the date command as the problem. For whatever reason, when the date command is in the loop, there is no output to the panel, and if I monitor my system resources I can see that my computer's memory is getting used up extremely quickly. It seems like it spawning a bunch of instances of the script. I'm not extremely experienced with linux, and definitely not with bash, so I have absolutely no clue whats going on here.Raynman wrote:
$ echo "$(date +%I:%M %p)"
date: extra operand ‘%p’
Try 'date --help' for more information.
Edit: since you're basically saying you're a newbie (and this also probably fits better in the Newbie Corner), I'll add that you should put the formatting string in (single) quotes to turn it into a single argument.
I'm not saying I'm a newbie at all. The issue occurs even without any parameters to the date command. -
Every time I launch a Source - based game, it crashes on startup. This happens with both "Team fortress 2" and "Tactical intervention". This began to happen recently (they used to work fine), but as I recall I've just installed Crossover... can anyone help me?
The bug report from "Tactical intervention" follows:

JDK1.5.0_12 crash when I try to startup a tomcat app server with it.
Hi,
I am support a Blackboard application running on a PrimePower box.
Recently I installed JDK1.5.0_12 on the box. When I re-configured Blackboard to use the new JDK and tried to restart the server, the tomcat portion will keep getting the JVM Hotspot crash error as illustrated below.
The startup is invoked from a shell script that starts the web server as well as the tomcat (app) server. As long as the root partition has enough diskspace, the script will try to "start" the tomcat server.
The JVM will keep throwing core dumps and issuing messages like the following, with each core dump taking about 100 to 150MB in space from the root partition.
Only when there isn't enough space in the root partition for another core dump, did I notice that it stopped.
My sys admin has since cleaned up the dump files and I have reverted back to the earlier minor release of JDK1.5.0.
I have used ldd -r libjvm.so and the command could return me the list of libraries that the libjvm.so depends on (not a problem with the loading of the dynamic libraries and such).
I have submitted the JVM crash report. But no one has gotten back to me.
Has anyone encountered the same problems / have any suggestions on what could be cause and how to resolved this?
Thanks.
Regards,
Hon Peng.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried this on another machine running the same version of Blackboard. It works fine.
Only difference is that the machine that has the JVM crash is running on Fujitsu PrimePower and the OS is Solaris 9 (but twigged for PrimePower).
The one where it runs and starts up successfully is running on SunFire (OS is Solaris 10).
I am wondering if there is a problem with the JVM loading required libraries because of the OS being different versions.
Any leads on this is welcomed. Thank you.
Regards,
Hon Peng
