IQ500 Supermulti Slimslot DVD Drive Replacement issue

I replaced my drive with a Super Multi DVD Rewriter, Model: GS30N, and when I start up the drive will accept a disk, and can read information from it.
However, the eject button on the side panel will not work.  (The eject button that is wired directly to the motherboard and not through the disk drive.)
I have to use either the Eject... command or remove the side panel and use the disk drive eject button to eject a disk.
Is there a firmware update needed to get the eject button to work?  Or is the GS30N not compatible with this system (for the button anyway)?

Hello Jaconus,
What is your product number and operating system?
Thanks!

  • DVD Drive Having Issues Reading Discs

    Hi there,
I have 2 MBP's (original and unibody model) and an iMac. However, the computer having the issue is the original MBP as listed below. I barely use the DVD drive but I thought I'd treat myself to the Sims 3 only to find that the DVD drive keeps spitting it out and 3rd time was lucky but then repeat over and over. It makes a noise like it is failing to read it properly. I thought it might've been a dodgy Sims disc so tried in my unibody and it works perfect.
This is not the only time I've had issue with it though. When it was still in warranty it would be very picky with certain DVD movies and the picture would freeze/randomly skip/not play at all. I did send it off to repair but as it works perfect with other discs, they couldn't find a problem and nothing was ever done about it.
I've just put in an audio CD I bought at a gig (so assume it was written on blank media) and the computer is saying it is a blank disc when it is not.
I dropped my laptop and it was sent in for repair a few months ago, they checked everything (as it was obviously dropped) and again, found no fault with CD/DVD drive (although the problems originated before it was dropped anyway).
Is there anything I can do my end? Resetting or something? If I send it in again it will cost me money as now out of warranty and I feel they will just tell me they cannot find a fault, again!
    Thanks for reading,
    -Lisa

Many people will recommend a lens cleaning disc first, cheap and easy if it helps. Otherwise, I would consider replacing the optical drive, which a careful person can install themselves with online instructions. The replacement drives are less than $100USD. These drives often seem to get dodgy.

  • DVD drive replacement on Satellite A100-646

    Hi all,
I want replace the DVD drive on my laptop. (I have many problems never solved)
Do you know if exist a list of compatibility model for the A100-646?
    Model to suggest me?
    Thanks a lot.
    Regards
    Fabrizio

    Hi!
In your case I would only choose a DVD drive from the list of the user manual. Otherwise the drive could not work and/or recognized.
By the way, if you have lost your user manual you can download it on the Toshiba website:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com
You can also look on eBay for a second hand drive. Maybe there you can find a good offer.
    Bye

  • New Mac Mini dvd drive replacement

hey has anyone tried to replace the DVD drive with the Sony BC-5600S bluray drive
its sata and the right size and its a slot drive, i really want to give it a shot
the drive can be had online for around $100. anyone tried this or think its possible?

Well I got a bluray drive in my PC rig I could pull out and connect to my mini and test this out but that's way too much work besides I could just google it and find out which I did:
It looks like it works in bootcamp just need to make sure to watch out for some stuff
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1213777&tstart=4
Someone was even nice enough to write a step-by-step on how to do it:
    http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=84989
p.s. Since the 9400 video that comes with the 2009 mini is HDCP compliant you should be able to use the DVI adapter it came with and you'll get smooth video since the 9400 was designed for high definition playback!

  • T43 dvd drive playback issues [SOLVED]

I have recently picked up a t43, and am having some downright bizarre issues with the DVD drive.  The t43 has ide drives, but uses a sata-bridge from what I can tell - this essentially means that both IDE drives are seen as scsi.  My hard disk is sda and my dvd-rw drive is sr0.  The drive seems to work ok for playing music CDs and for playing unencrypted DVDs, but as soon as a DVD with CSS is in the drive, it starts going batshit, and fills dmesg with I/O errors.  I've tried Arch, Edgy Eft, and Frugalware -current -- all suffer from the same problem.  I have a fully updated Arch install on it now, FWIW.  Running kaffeine or mplayer or dvdbackup from the command line fills the console with "failure to crack" messages.  I have yet to see how it behaves when burning discs, but cdrecord -scanbus doesn't find a usable drive, so my guess is it may not be pretty.
However, I have only been able to find a single discussion about this issue, and that was on the Gentoo forums.  There was no remedy found, though some folks thought it was region related, and others thought it was related to dbus versions.  I've swapped the drive out, and the issue remains, so I really don't think it has anything to do with the drive.
Can anyone out there with a t43 or later thinkpad actually view encrypted dvds on it?

As I suspected, it wouldn't burn anything - after a certain amount of dicking around, I discovered that it's expecting to see an sg* device in /dev as a burner which isn't being created by default.  I created a symlink from /dev/sr0 to /dev/sg0, and cdrecord can now see the device - for some reason it didn't like being told dev=/dev/sr0 though.  As far as I can tell at this point the burner does/will work, or at the very least I've burned a single copy of tpowa's base iso and booted from it fine.  I still have no idea wtf is going on with reading - nearly every account I've seen online says that "everything just works" after about 2.6.15 - I've seen about 5 different libata module options, and none of them have changed anything (as far as I can tell) other than I get a nice stream of errors on boot with a couple of them.
This is just a personal observation, but it would be really helpful if people had their blogs and wiki's setup to log dates of entries. Thinkwiki is great, but it's very hard to tell if what you're reading there is from yesterday or two years ago.  Also, if you're writing a how-to guide, please don't gloss over what "just works" about something that has been known to not work once it is fixed, and don't say "it all worked OOTB" if you haven't even tested it.  A personal gripe there, I guess, but I get a little annoyed when I rely on community reports that "it all just works now," spend $1k+ on a lappy, and discover that it does not, in fact, all "just work" now.
I'll keep banging on this, though, and I'll post more specific error messages later on.

I don't need any help on how to fix it or what to check since I've already gone through the problem/situation... does anyone know a different way where I can access/use my dvds... such as cd/dvd sharing on a different computer and use it from there... I would like any idea/suggestion... when I say that I mean like EVERYTHING/ANYTHING. I want whatever ideas you have 'cause I don't have any and I really badly want to use my dvds. If all else fails I will buy an external dvd drive or get a dvd replacement...

  • Tecra A8-EZ8312 DVD Drive Replacement Compatability??

    Hi All..
Working on a clients Tecra A8-EZ8312 to replace the dead DVD drive.
For whatever reason Toshiba apparently is hardware specific?
What's so special about the DVD Drives that the Bios wont recognize a basic DVD replacement Drive?
Does anyone know what drives are compatable with the Tecra?
Please don't answer with "Call Toshiba for a replacement drive".  There's a better answer out there.
    Anyone have experience with this?

  • Macbook pro unibody dvd drive replacement

Hi guys, im new here, looking for some advice.
My dvd drive on my macbook pro 13" unibody is playing up, it makes a odd noise when a disc is inserted, like something plastic is scratching.
my DVD burner is GS23N SB03, i think i need to replace mine. Ive found a burner on the net but its a GS23N S23NA, does anyone know if i can swap mine for this? and would i need to do something software wise to get it to work?
    many thanks
    Gary

How new is your MacBook Pro?, if it is a mid 2010 you can bring it to the apple store to have them take a look to it. If this is the case (having a 2010 MBP), you'll most likely be under the 1 year hardware warranty, and if an error is found with your MBP internal DVD drive, Apple will replace it at no cost.

  • DVD drive sharing issue

    Hi,
how can I create my music library in iTune (to sync with my iPod) on my Macbook Air since remote DVD sharing from my other Macs does not let me do it? Apple selling point for not having a DVD drive on the Macbook Air is that you can use DVD drive sharing.
    drive.
I'm hoping for an official answer from Apple since, I own the origininal audio CDs, and all the Apple hardware and software and just trying to do what is advertised as possible without infinging anyone's property rights.
    Thank you.

    Could anyone please help?
(Or is this question under the wrong rubric (networking!) here...?)

  • Internal hard drive replacement issue...(a bit wordy)

I am the second user of this white core duo MacBook - the boss's hand-me-down.
The original hard drive was almost full when I received the unit, so after using it for a while I decided to replace the internal drive. I have an external WD 320GB "My Passport" formatted for Mac use that works just fine - it keeps the Time Machine backups on one partition and a Carbon Copy Cloner image of the original internal drive on another.
I recently bought a WD 250GB Scorpio Blue (WD2500BPVT-00ZEST0), stuck it in the computer, formatted it (Mac OS Extended (Journaled), GUID) as a single partition and put the CCC image of the original drive on it. All was good. New drive booted and functioned as expected. Four days later it failed (question mark appearing on restart attempts). The disk utility applications in four different OS's failed to recognize the disk. Short story is WD sent me a replacement, but 320GB rather than the 250 - a WD3200BPVT-00ZEST0.
I eventually got the new drive partitioned and formatted and installed Snow Leopard from my update disk. All this transpired with the drive docked in an external USB dock.
During the OS install I took the opportunity to set it up in my name rather than my boss's name. (was this a mistake and the source of my problem, I wonder?)
I can boot from this newly built drive when it is docked, BUT NOT when it's installed internally in the laptop. It is recognized as an available start drive during restart, and I get the "apple", but the spinning wheel keeps on spinning without actually booting (or at least I get tired of waiting and the fan keeps spooling up - I eventually just turn the power off).
Is this drive, at 320Gb, too big for this laptop to use internally? (but the 250GB one worked)
Did I make a mistake in creating a different default ID (me rather than the boss) while installing the OS? Is the laptop "remembering" the user setup from the original small drive somehow and refusing to work with the new drive's new user?
This is my first "Mac" experience and I really like the way the OS treats me and the "look and feel" of the GUI, but this has been somewhat frustrating. (I WILL stick with it though, I plan on buying a new MBP next summer.)
Am I forever destined to live with the tiny original drive and be relegated to carrying around Passport drive to get most of my data files?
I now have three drives I can boot from, but I'd really like to have the big new one actually usable from inside the laptop rather than sitting in a dock (with all it's cables).
    Thanks for reading this far.
    Dave

    OK, so push ahead...
    He's dead, Jim.
The hard drive works outside of the laptop.
Your USB enclosure probably runs slower or something.
Has there been some (unknown to me) change in the specifications of 2.5" SATA hard drives since the original one was spec'd for this laptop that renders the newer ones unusable?
I prefer to have other people keep up with this stuff instead of me. I buy pretty much all of my equipment from OWC. If they sell it, it will work with your Mac. Even if you don't buy from OWC (but you should), if you buy the same model numbers that they sell, you should be fine. OWC doesn't sell this drive. For me, that would be a red flag.
(WD claims their "advanced formatting" is OS X compatible without the realignment required by certain versions of Windows, but is it possible this is a hardware related issue with the MacBook?)
OWC does sell the "regular formatting" version of this drive (WDGWD3200BEVT). Perhaps it only works in newer machines. The WD support page also mentioned that cloning can screw up the drive. I never recommend cloning except in some very specific circumstances. I do that not because I know something, but because I don't. I'm not entirely sure what those clone tools are doing underneath and if they've been tested on these new drives.
Maybe put it back into the enclosure and partition it again into a single volume. Make sure to use the GUID option. Don't do anything else with it. Put it back into the Mac and try again. If it fails again, get a different drive.

  • Internal Hard Drive replacement issue?

    Hi,
Last night, I upgraded my internal hard drive from 20Gig to 80Gig, and I added a DVD ROM drive so I can watch movies (instead of playing CD's only). I ran the hardware test disc and everything passed.
In addition, last week, I installed 512MB of additional RAM. The physical installations of everything was really a lot easier than people in the forum would have you believe, but Pismos are definitely easier and a lot more user friendly when it comes to upgrading.
The problem is I don't have any iBook installation discs. I DO have the 4 original restore discs, but when I attempt to do a restore, the restore option is grayed out and inaccessible. The eject and switch disc option only shuffle between image and disc. The HD icon won't come up. Startup without the restore discs only boots up to the question mark.
Obviously, I didn't know that I was supposed to back up the original 20Gig drive before removing it. I guess I can put it back in, back it up, and take it out again. My question is, before I remove the 80Gig and reinstall the 20gig, does anyone know of another option to get the restore option to not be grayed out?
If not, then I have another question. How can I back up the original iBook drive on my Pismo's external 300 Gig Firewire Seagate without destroying all the data I've backed up from the Pismo.
It is partitioned into 2, but one of them is only 10Gigs large as a mirror of 1 of my Pismo's 10Gig HD? If it isn't possible, then I guess I can destroy everything on my Seagate and reinstall it again when I'm done upgrading the iBook. I would rather not do that though.
Thank you in advance for any ideas you may have on the subject,
A Little Fish in the BigMac Pond

Check Apple's Knowledge Base article on restoring your Apple software for links to the proper instructions for your model (which depends upon which software came with it). Most likely, the Restore discs are not startup CD's, so you can't use them until OS X is installed on the computer.
You need the installation disc to initialize the drive and format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
I haven't used it, but DiskStudio is supposed to allow you to partition without erasing the hard drive.

  • Satellite L30-134 - CD/DVD drive replacement

    Hello All
I hope I can get a little help here.
I recently lost my CD-ROM drive on my L30 and want to replace it. What I could do with is an exploded diagram for the nuts and bolts bit, and the model number of the CD-ROM drive or a compatable replacement if anyone knows of one?
I have carefully removed the screw from the case but seem to have some sort of fixing in the centre that I cant fathom, no screw showing, but it seems firmly attached.
    Thanks for any advice
    John

    Hiya Luke
Yeah, i should imagine a user manual would list compatible replacements, but unfortunately, i dont have one.
I kinda figured that not every cd rom drive would work, there are a fair few on ebay and just wondered if anyone knew of a good replacement having had to do a similar job.
I still have the problem of not being able to get the laptop apart enough to get to the mounting hardware,
so if anyone has a good idea of how this unit comes apart i would be very grateful.
I have triple checked that all the screws are out, but there seems to be something bang in the middle of the unit holding it together, almost directly underneath the "space" bar, yet i cant find any trace of a screw. Most annoying, as if i could get the unit apart and remove the cd drive, THEN i could get the model number of the drive and do a little more of an informed search.
    Cheers all
    john

  • Hard Drive Replacement Issue

The IBM Deskstar 60GB hard drive, in my G4 Quicksilver 933, started to go South on me this week. Last night I purchased a Seagate 120GB to replace it with but when I boot from CD it doesn't show any volumes install the OS on.
I'm not concerned about recovering anything off of the old drive as I've already backed it up on my external drives. But, how do I initialize a drive if I'm replacing it as the master? Can I do it from CD? I don't know how to access a disk utility. The CD automatically starts the install process.

    right you are.
just to help anyway when you boot up with the installer disk and you end up getting to the point where it lits what language you want to use. goto the file menu and goto the list and select disk utility. this will allow you to see all the drives. the new drive might be listed. there you can then choose to format the drive whatever style you wish, with or without OS9 drivers, etc.
then when finished continue using the installer and install new OSX on the new drive.

I have Satellite 1400-153E Laptop. Where are the fixing screws for the DVD player located please?

To remove optical disc drive you must disassemble the whole notebook. The optical disc drive is connected to mainboard and you need access to right connector. Unfortunately maintenance manuals document is not public document and there is no step-by-step explanation how to do this.
Google a little bit around. Maybe you will find instruction how to do this.
