IRig input level for vocal mic extremely low

Hi All,
I have ben merrily using my iRig and Garageband for Ipad to record instrumental tracks with no problem, but recently decided to try and add vocals. Just to test it out I bought an imitation SM58 style dynamic mic, with an XLR to jack lead so I could use the iRig, however when I go to use it, the audio/input level for the mic is VERY low - any ideas as to why this might be? I've turned the track volume and input up to maximum but it's still barely audible. Suspect it might be the mic, so tempted to spend some real money on a condenser mic, but worried I will get the same result. Are there any alternatives / success stories with recording vocals through Garageband, and what are you using?
Thanks
Nick

I have used the Shure SM58 and many microphones similar to it in studio and live settings, and that microphone requires what is called Phantom Power when it is run through a mixing board. In a nutshell, Phantom Power runs 48 volts on the channel the microphone is in, because that microphone only sends a passive signal and it needs to be powered. So the reason your microphone would put out such a low level would probably be because there's not a substantial for your iRig to pick up, even at maximum gain. I would look into purchasing a phantom power unit or some other preamp that you can put between your iRig and microphone.

  • Vocals are extremely low...help!

On iTunes, my audio is okay except the vocals are extremely low (or sometimes even unaudible). But when I listen to the songs on my iPod, the vocals are totally normal. I've tried fooling around with the equalizer, and then completely turning the equalizer off, but it still doesn't work. I've checked all the forums, but no one seems to have this problem. Then I uninstalled iTunes and installed it again, but the problem remains.
Does anyone know how to fix this?!

Are you aware that you can adjust the volume levels from within iMovie by clicking on the icon located in the centre of the screen amongst 10 other icons, it's the one that looks like a ray gun attack!!! (2nd from right icon)
Failing this, what settings are you using in MPEG Streamclip?
I use EXPORT TO QUICKTIME, then select compression 'APPLE DV - PAL' from the dropdown menu, and move the quality bar to 100%.
    Click on 'Make movie'.

  • Input level for narration

    hello,
I don't seem to have any input level lights when adding narration. The lights show up for audio and soundtracks but not for narration. How can I fix this please??

Hello again - thanks for being so patient!
My asio settings are Output   X(box crossed) Realtek High Definition Audio
2048 0 2 16 NO (All highlighted in black)                      Input
    X(box crossed) Realtek etc.                            2048 0 2 16 YES ( Not
    highlighted in black)
    Should that NO be YES?
In the narration box, Realtek comes up also when I click on microphone.
I have switched from a usb microphone to a standard one that plugs into the
front of my computer, and I can hear the sound fron my project clips and the
lvel lights are working now, BUT now when I try to add the narration, the
microphone does not seem to be working and there is no sound in the
narration clip??? The narration works fine without a microphone i.e. when i
just speak straight into the computer speakers.
    Thankyou

  • Exporting for DVD requires extremely low volumes, is that normal?

    Hi,
I have completed a project and when exporting to dvd I find I need to lower the master volume by 18 db for it to not cause tv speakers to pop, I try it out on several different tv's with the same result.
When I mix my audio none of it exceeds 0 db, nothing is in the red and nonetheless I lowered by 6 db, but it won't be enough until I export at -18 Db.
I do this by lowerng the master audio level from 0 to -18.
    Is this normal?

    Hunt, thanks for the reply!
I do the same, well I use beyer dynamic dt 770 pro headphones for monitoring, then I test the audio out on a stereo and a 5.1 surround setup.
If I export the audio on a cd it sounds great everywhere, put it on dvd and it goes to hell.
Is it possible that audio cd's are at 44100 16 bit wheras dvd audio is 48000 khz?
Doesn't make much sense to me, but the way I see it the irony is this:
Play and audio cd where the audio peaks at 0db through your tv and it sounds great, play a dvd with the same audio on it and it kills the speakers :S
Is it possible that mpeg2 encoding boosts audio levels for some reason and you need to correct it by pushing audio levels down?
I found this link after doing some research:
    http://dvcreators.net/discuss/showthread.php?t=25404
    Basically this question was asked:
    1. *is there a certain db level an audio track should be if you plan to burn to DVD?
    amongst others,
    The reply was:
Use the audio meters to gauge audio level. Peaks should be at -16 to -12.
Why is this do you think?
-2 db would not work when I burn to dvd, it would kill the speakers of either a surround system or a stereo tv system, including my samung hdtv.
When I export to dvd I first export from premiere the built in Mpeg-2 DVD setting and then use either windows dvd maker or idvd on my mac to burn to dvd.

  • Ideal input level for mastering limiter?

    Hi,
I am mastering my own electronic dance music tracks, and have a question regarding input levels when using a mastering limiter.
Typically, I mix down to a 24-bit, 44.1k stereo .wav file with a max peak level of -6 db.
My question is this: in the mastering process, will a mastering limiter work better if the input level is brought up prior to hitting the limiter, for example, by using Logic's Gain plugin? Or is it better to leave as much headroom as possilbe before hitting the limiter?
    Thanks for anyone's help.
    Cheers

    Hey KC,
Good article, thanks. I'd already read a lot of material on Ian's web site and watched a few of his videos, and I consider him a good authority on the matter. Within the article you suggested, I found that answer, which is Ian talking about how, if you push a limiter too hard, the sound degrades - and this is something I thought I had noticed, to varying degrees, with different limiters. So thanks for that reference, I really appreciate it, and thus question solved
Also, just want you guys to know that:
    a) I do use gentle compression on the mix prior to the limiter
    b) I do sometimes use side-chain compression on the bass, and sometimes do the same on mix groups, or other individual instruments, to clear out room for the kick and/or as an artistic decision
    c) I am not a loudness freak..really... Seriously though...I do try to keep dynamic range in my material
Thanks again KC & Eriksimon. Cheers

  • Self adjusting input level on built in mic?

both my gf and i are having this problem. when we adjust the input level for the internal mic, it adjusts itself back to max or near max. what is causing this and how do we get it to stop?? she has a MB, 2.16, mac osX 10.4.7. thanks.

    anybody?

  • Input level - meter?

This might seem like a stupid question, but I need to ask it as the GB help doesn't explain it clearly. Where should one set input level for recording and where does one MONITOR that level via a meter reading (to check for clipping, etc)? This seems like such a basic need, so I'm confused to why it's not clearer.
I'm using an M-Audio FW410 which has it's own software mixer, but from their manual it seems the input level should be set from within GB.
I've experimented with the Recording Level slider in GB and even when it's not greyed out I'm not hearing a difference in signal, even if I turn it to 0. Do I actually have to go to the Sound control panel in System Preferences for this? I should mention I'm recording a "real instrument" track and my signal is coming through loud and clear.
The only two level meters I see from within GB are for each track's volume (which is just for mixing and/or monitoring while recording, correct?) and the master volume slider/meter at the bottom.
    thanks,
    Scott

The meter on each input should be reading at a sensible level: not over-peaking but not too low either. The main control has no effect on these levels, only on the final mix. For example, if the main control was at a normal setting, and you had a number of channels all at a high level, then they would add together and you would need to bring the final level down to prevent it over-peaking. The level should be set sensible at every stage.
You set the input in the GarageBand Preferences, so this will show what you are using. If you have your interface selected then the internal mic is not in use.

  • How to adjust Garageband real instrument input level

    Hello,
I am using an electric ukulele with a B-Band pickup/pre-amp and a Lightsnake USB instrument cable to connect to my MacBook and Garageband 2009. The B-Band pickup does not have a switch or volume control for the pre-amp. I have both the input levels in system preferences and Garageband set to the lowest setting, but the input signal is too strong, so it goes into the red zone on the input level for the track, causing digital clipping and unwanted distortion.
My question is, is there a way to lower the input signal even further? Maybe some hidden setting/option, or a software download? Any suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks,

I have never before seen the Lightsnake USB that you have, so I can't comment on that. Perhaps see if there is a driver update for the Mac? I notice there is none on their webpage www.sountech.com/downloads/drivers but I'd see if there is something happening there soon.
I have had good success with a Presonus Firebox project 10. It has heaps of inputs, and uses firewire as its interface to the mac. There is a smaller 2 main input version if you are budget conscious.
The Presonus range have great pre-amps in the inputs and give greater control over the input levels. Plus you only need a guitar lead or mic lead. Plus it allows you to plug any pickup/electric instrument or microphone into it.

I want to make a script that adjusts the output volume of my mac based on the volume that the mic hears. I am not very good with applescript, but I do know how to control the volume. • How to Set Input Levels with FirePod and GarageBand

    Hello ....
I/ve got Garageband and my Firepod 8 channel interface working ... but I need some tips .. especially on the relationship of input levels between my Firepod and Garageband ....
When I am setting input levels for a recording ... where should the input level be on the track in Garageband? .... Is that volume setting only for playback and mixing? .... or is it for the input as well ...
    Thank you ....

Where should the initial input levels be set? ... Would you use the loudest
part of the song to do this? ...
Yes, as loud as possible without lighting the FP's clip leds.
When I mix the final product ... and change the volumes on the different
tracks.. aren't you then changing the input levels?
No, you're changing the output levels.
can't you red line and overload the track?
Yes, that's why each track has a fader, so that you don't clip.
Is there a master ouput level indicator
Yes, right over the Master Volume slider.
I guess you can't just put each track as loud as you want ... correct?
As loud as you want without clipping.
I would strongly suggest doing some web searches on "Mixing and Mastering" to learn more about how to mix, there's a TON of info floating around the web.

  • TS4185 My friend can't here me if she calls or I call her, but input levels are good ere

Anytime my friend tries to call me from her mac or ipad, she cannot hear me talking. The same occurs when I call her, she can't hear me then either. I check my input levels for internal mike and all looks good. Also, preferences under facetime is ghosted out so I can get in to see if there is something I can do. You are suppose to be able to access preferences in facetime, right?

I got the preferences back after shutting down facetime and signing back in. but microphone still an issue.

  • IPad volume (esp Facetime) is extremely low after iOS 7 update

    Hi Devs,
After the update for iOS7, the volume (esp for Facetime) is extremely low and i have to strain to hear at MAX volume. Even video playback is affected. Pls help.........
    Thanks.

CRAP!!!! I wish I would have read this post before I just dropped $400 on a brand new unlocked 4s.  It came with IOS7... FU.....  I wish I could return it!!     Well, I'm stuck with it now.  I received it with 7.0.4, so, it sounds like Apple hasn't done anything to fix this issue or cares too... tisk tisk Apple... what are you thinking.... how many people need to complain and ask for help before you realize you have an issue and you fix it??  What is it going to take??  Doesn't make sense to me... such a great product going down the toilet.  Oh, maybe it's because you already have billions in the bank... now it makes sense.
I bought this iphone 4s to give to my girlfriend and was going to by an iphone 5s for myself... that's not going to happen now.
Well, I'm stuck with this phone now, so any help out there would be awesome.... please, no sarcastic comments.

  • Samson C01U usb mic/low input level

I recently bought a Samson C01U usb condenser mic to use with Garageband to record voice and piano for my music studio. When I plug it in, it is recognized in system preferences/Sound. But when I try to record in Garageband, the input level monitor barely responds. I've selected Mono 1, as advised by tech support at Samson. I can't figure out why this mic isn't working, since it's recommended for this exact purpose. I don't think I should need a pre amp, but now am wondering if I do. I'd be so grateful for any advice.
    KM

You know, the Samson C01U worked ok with the SoftPre software from Samsontech under Tiger. The input levels could be bumped up sufficiently for the **** thing to actually work even if the input signal was still on the low side.
Since SoftPre doesn't work with Leopard, the C01U is basically an expensive paperweight.
Since Samsontech seem incapable of getting their act together in putting out an operational Leopard compatible SoftPre software release, my advice to the wider Mac community is to BOYCOTT THEM! If Samsontech aren't receptive to consumer needs and flexible enough to act accordingly when the OS is updated, they deserve to suffer the commercial consequences - period!
I'm looking forward to the liberating ritual of taking a giant sledgehammer and obliterating my now useless, overpriced Samson C01U. It's going to be awesome !

  • Suddenly no mic input level thru mbox

I have been recording vocals successfully in GB 2.0.1 through an mbox. All of a sudden, with seemingly no change in anything, I'm getting no level when I sing into the mic and record (I just get a "chunk" with a straight line as opposed to the wavy audio line, if you know what i mean). The mbox is still offered as an input choice in GB preferences, the digidesign manager program seems to be working. I've tried opening various songs in GB and recording to vocal tracks where previously i've had no problem - no levels.
And, when I record through my iMic it works (but at a lower quality)
why would the mbox all of a sudden stop working? any ideas? all is the same as far as I can tell, phantom power's on, levels same, on "mic" setting, correct channel. I've tried quitting, restarting the computer etc
any insights would be greatly appreciated!
    D

    Hi Gerald and Scott,
I"m sorry for the delay - I've been out of town. Thank you both for your replies. As it turns out i think my mbox actually died. Its in for repair now...so we'll see.
I am interested in the driver you mentioned, Gerald. You use this instead of the Core audio driver? I was wondering what is it that you like about this driver in particular? Also, do you pro tools by chance?
    thanks
