Irksome "sticky" arrow key problem- using 10.5.6 on 2.16ghz macbook (white)

recently, while using google earth, the globe/land started to run away scroll on me. i didn't know how to stop it; by instinct I'd press the arrow key the opposite direction to which it was scrolling, but that had no effect. if i zoomed in or out, that would stop it, but it would happen again moments later. I'd quit the app, thinking something was wrong with it somehow, and relaunch. it would happen again. i must've uninstalled and reinstalled google earth a dozen times and still, I'd get the same problem.
then, when playing in "second life", an app/game in which i use the arrow keys to move around, my avatar would keep running or spinning in the same direction until i tapped that same direction again. aha! i finally figured out how to stop this from happening; there was nothing wrong with google earth after all, since i could now make the runaway scrolling stop in "GE" too. still, this is a very aggravating nuisance.
I've never spilled anything on my keyboard, and all the arrow keys are like new, nice and springy.
i went into the universal access prefpane, and checked "sticky keys" then unchecked it. still get the same crap behavoir.
not sure what could be causing this. the hardware and software respond consistently to correct the problem once it happens (pressing the arrown key in the same direction as it's locked, or stuck in) but i don't know how it's being triggered. I've tried holding down the arrow keys, holding for 1 second, then off, 2 then off, etc., nothing consistently makes it happen; just using the arrow keys in an app that arrow keys "move you in". i've not experienced any runaway cursors when holding down an arrow key in any text apps. could it have anything to do with a 3D thing?
anyone with information how to fix this? this is extremely annoying even though i now know how to get the arrow keys "unstuck".
thank you.
2.16ghz macbook white Mac OS X (10.5.6)

i've figured out the problem. in case anyone else experiences a similar problem, mine was caused by a great little program called textexpander. alas, i can no longer use it now since the benefits are not worth having my runaway/sticky arrow keys.

  • Down Arrow Key Problem

    Ok, so i was just messing around on my computer like always.  I held down the up arrow key to scroll up to a page, and when doing so the bottom arrow key came off.  This is where the fun begins .... I have tried numerous attempts to put the arrow key back on, but like most computers, it doesn't just "snap" back on as some people suggested.  And, if you haven't noticed, you can't go to google and type in "How to fix my down arrow key", so naturally i came here hoping to find some answers.
    My computer is an HP dv7t Core i3-380 2.53 GHz Integrated Webcam and Fingerpring Reader.  Any and all assistance would be appreciated.  Pictures, tutorials, information ANYTHING to get this key back on.  Even suggestion will do; I can still use the key, but even that is messing up on me now.  What should i do?? Online help, take it to someone, or what?

    Does the problem happen if you reboot the system into Safe Mode by holding the Shift key at startup?
    Additionally, does the problem happen if you create a new user account in the Users & Groups system preferences and log into that?

  • Sticky arrow keys on T510 all of a sudden?

    Hi
    Out of nowhere my Arrow keys and the two keys next to the up arrow have become very sticky.  By this, I mean they dont press as smoothly and freely as they did, and they take much longer to return to completely unpressed.  They feel spongy!  they do work, but feel horrible.
    I recently took out the keyboard to get to the wifi card, this is the only time I can think of anything happening.  But I have taken out the keyboard and checked again its all in the right place.  I blew some compressed air under the keys, which seemed to do the job for about 5 minutes.
    very odd, and my return key had a similar thing ealrier.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

  • Sticky arrow keys

    I purchased, alhtough now regret, a new dv6 1375 in february of this year. SInce then I have learned of man problems which would have deturred me from this product. One of which is the fact that when i try to play games which involve the arrow keys, they always seem to stick. This is not only true for the arrows at the bottom of the keyboard, but also in the number pad, and the WSAD keys. This is reall annoying as I can almost always rely on the fact that my keys will stick.

    Jam,
    Hi I had this problem too and what I did is I removed the keys by popping them out of place with a flat head screw driver.  (Do it lightly).  Then I took a q-tip with a little bit of rubbing alcohol and gently wiped down the area where the soda had splashed onto.  That totally did the trick.  The keys move normally and it is like the soda was never there to begin with.

  • HTML BEE replacement causes arrow key problems

    Hi all,
        I've got a BSP application with a tableview where some of the columns need to have input fields. I'm using a tableviewcontrol and I have an iterator that replaces certain columns with HTML input fields. I've noticed that when I have the cursor inside one of the input fields and I press one of the arrow keys, instead of moving the cursor within the input, it moves the cursor over to the next cell on the table. I'm not sure at what point it started happening, whether it was when I introduced the tableviewcontrol or when I started using HTML bees to replace the cell. Any info on this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Marcos Suero

    Figured out the answer myself. In the onKeyDown event of the input field, I set event.cancelBubble to true when navigation buttons are clicked. This stops higher level onKeyDown events from processing.

  • Problem with Mini DV to Video Adaptor on MacBook White (early 2009 version)

    Hello, i realise for some odd reason that the above mentioned adaptor is not designed (anymore) to work with the update macbook white. The only two adaptors left which do work are the mini DV to DVI and mini DV to VGA.
    So my question is the following, how do I plug my MacBook white into my TV, knowing that the only input I have (old but still very good TV thxs) on my TV is an S-Video or a composite input?
    I cannot seem to find any adaptors or converters anywhere but i'm not quite ready yet to buy a new tv.
    Thxs,

    You're welcome, pweester.
    And thanks for the star.
    ... whats so different to using s-video or composite which justifies blocking it??
    Your question is answered here in my original response:
                  ... According to this post

    by user Ziatron, Apple's latest MacBooks cannot output directly to analog TV due to some kind of digital copy protection that is built into these new Macs. That is why the older adapters do not work.
    New legalities of digital copy protection seem to demand that newly designed Macs prevent protected programming from playback other than on devices that meet the new legal requirements. Your "old tv which uses s-video or composite input" apparently does not meets the new requirements and, therefore, is not supported.
    ... RW-DVD ... burn ... to watch and stick it into my PS then.
    That can certainly work for programing that is not covered by digital copy protection prohibitions. However, you may need counsel regarding whether this approach is legal for media or AV products with digital copy protection restrictions.
    I honestly hope they will go back on this decision ...
    (Click this link if you want to see)->Paragraph 2.1.2 of Apple Discussions' Use Agreementsprevents us from discussing this matter here.
    Rather than posting here in this user discussion forum, you can use (Click this link if you want to see)->MacBook Feedback to send comments or suggestions directly to Apple. You will not get an answer, but you can be certain that Apple will see your input for consideration in future products.
    ... this really upset me.
    You bought the latest white MacBook, and, as a result, enjoy the benefits of all the improvements available only in the current version of the MacBook. The information about which adapters could work with your new MacBook was available at the time of your decision.
    However, depending upon how upset you are, how recent your MacBook purchase, and which features are most important to you, perhaps your retailer will allow you to exchange or trade-in your new white MacBook for a different Mac that can still use the adapter you want.
    ... my old pc could connect without a worry in the world....
    Not being covered by the current digital copy protection requirements, not only older PCs, but older Macs could, too.

  • Acrobat X Pro 10.1.12 under Yosemite crashes when trying to use arrow keys to navigate.

    Acrobat X Pro 10.1.12 Mac
    Yosemite OS X 10.10.1
    Acrobat now crashes when attempting to use arrow keys to navigate. This is true on both MacBook Pro 15 retina and Mac Pro.

    I ended up upgrading to Acrobat XI. This works, but Adobe is up to its old tricks changing the interface from what we're used to using. They now have decided to hide all the tools. You have to delve deep into the program to find the tools, then set up your own tool menus. Lord help you finding a tool that you use too occasionally to put on a custom menu.
    Adobe has been doing this for years now. In Photoshop of olden days, it was simple to set up a brush, say, that you used frequently. Quite a few updates ago they made that vastly more difficult. And they've replaced words with happy little icons, that are not at all intuitive to use. I challenge you, too, to look at the icon for the airbrush and tell me whether it is on or off. (Sorry, this is mainly about Photoshop, but what they've done to the latest Acrobat is just as bad.)
    Of course, their ultimate cuteness in making things difficult for the user is their essential abandonment of a Help system. You can't do a simple look-up of a function -- you have to go to an internet site and sort through a bunch of forums and user comments to get any information.
    JEEZ Adobe!

  • Using a keyListener to draw with arrow keys

    Hi!
    I am trying to create an interactive game where the user can
    draw a line using the arrow keys (similar to an etch-a-sketch). I
    have a start point acting on keyListeners that will move around the
    screen using the arrow keys, but I can't seem to figure out how to
    get the listeners to draw a line. Here is the correct code that
    moves the start point:
    information_txt.text = "USE YOUR ARROW KEYS TO DRAW";
    var speed:Number = 4;
    start_mc.onEnterFrame = function() {
    if (Key.isDown(Key.RIGHT)) {
    this._x = this._x+speed;
    } else if (Key.isDown(Key.LEFT)) {
    this._x = this._x-speed;
    if (Key.isDown(Key.UP)) {
    this._y = this._y-speed;
    } else if (Key.isDown(Key.DOWN)) {
    this._y = this._y+speed;
    How can I modify Action Script to get the keyListeners to
    draw on the arrow keys?
    Any help would be MUCH appreciated!!!
    Thanks!

    Thanks for your reply! That's awesome. you were right, my
    script is in AS 2.0... I guess I posted to the wrong section. But I
    could easily switch to AS 3.0. I am really just interested in
    drawing with the arrow keys and using that action script to draw
    onto my own stage/ image. I have tried messing with the script, but
    can't seem to get the "drawing" portions of the script to work.
    Any suggestions??
    Thanks again for the help!!!

  • Left arrow key -- probably a stupid question.

    In some applications my left arrow key doesn't work. I've noticed it most in Word for mac, but I know it has happened elsewere, too. And in safari the left arrow key tabs often functions like tab. I'm new to Mac (and just getting used to fn + delete to delete forward). Is this another key combination thing I'm missing? I've discovered using Word that fn + <-- is "home," and that works just fine.
    Thanks!

    I have this exact same problem. Has anyone found a fix. I called Apple Care and they said it was not a hardware problem, as this left arrow key problem only happens in Word. They also could not find a fix to the problem and, of course, referred me to Microsoft. I had already spoken with Microsoft and they, of course, referred me to Apple. I am desperately trying to a fix, as I use Word to write upwards of 100 page reports and not being able to use the left arrow key is a nightmare.
    Please someone help.

  • Down arrow key won't work

    Hello!
    Here is my situation:
    I'm working in a Flash-based courseware environment.
    Basically, has anyone encounted a situation where the down arrow key (or any key for that matter) will work on someones computer, and not work on someone elses computer? We use various methods to navigate through our courseware, most of which are clicks, but the down arrow key is used fairly often. But unfortunately, despite our best efforts, this key often does not work on clients computers. We've tried swapping out different keyboards, no luck.
    We do not have the source files for the Flash, it is auto-generated by the tool we are using (which is similar to captivate, camtasia, etc).
    Any thoughts?

    Are you using the same browser consistently throughout testing? Sometimes browsers are the issue for such problems and not the hardware itself

    Nope, I doubt it.  As I said:
    I disabled Aero theme, checked font scaling was 100% and rebooted Windows in between all of the steps to no avail.
    I've been reading a lot around this and it seems the arrow key problem is a red herring; I think it's just some kind of terminal preferences corruption.

  • Arrow Key Sensitivity.

    Hey guys is there a way to adjust the sensitivity of the arrow keys when using Leapord? For instance if I wanted to be able to use the keys to move around a web-page faster, I could in theory adjust the sensitivity of the keys?

    You can go to your system preferences and adjust the key repeat rate and the delay before repeating. Look under keyboard & mouse>keyboard.

  • Bluetooth Keyboard arrow keys

    When using Keynote to view a presentation created in Powerpoint, sometimes the formatting needs adjustment. For repositioning multiple objects (or fields) you can select the objects and "group" them. And, those groups can be dragged to a new position (if your fingers are small enough). If a "bluetooth keyboard" is attached, can the arrow keys be used to "move" the object(s) since there is no mouse? This would really make life easier when creating slides in Keynote. Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

    I believe on the keys on the on screen keyboard work on a physical keyboard
