IronPort Bounce notifications

So...we have Symantec DLP running.  When a user sends an email that contains data blocked by a Symantec DLP policy they get an email from DLP saying their email was blocked.  They also get an undeliverable from our Exchange environment saying ironport.domain.com #550 5.7.1 $SENDER$, the email was blocked because confidential data has been detected. ##
We want to stop the Ironport undeliverables from being sent to the users.  Is there a way to stop the Ironport from sending the confidential data ndr to Exchange?

Hello Claire,
I am not quiet certain what your process flow is actually, is Symantec DLP an external host the ESA delivers to, or is it installed on the Exchange server? I am asking because it seems there is a policy on Symantec DLP that creates a notification, but then passes the message to the exchange server.

Andreas

If outbound mails are undeliverable, our Lotus Notes users receives bounce notification messages (created by ESA) sometimes as attachement (filename: "RFC822.eml") to a Notes-created DSN.
The .eml attachment contains $BounceReason from ESA's point of view.

Seems that the Ironport bounce is not interpretable by Notes. Why? And how can we remedy this defect?

Thanks John and Marting for the tip.
Keep in mind if you or your customer are using CM (centralized Management) this can cause performance issue.
But I used this with two different customer using Lotus Domino/Notes and IronPort and this fixed the issue.
In fact, the .eml file can be saves as .txt and you can see the NDF there.

  • Bounced Notification messages in Mail

Help me out!! I have been getting "Bounced Notification Messages" in my mail for the past few days. Have dumped all messages and cleared my mailbox, yet the messages still claim I have exceeded my "quota". Sorry for the stupid question, but how do i correct this, and what can I do to avoid maxing out the "quota"??

Thanks, I figured it out thru my "server". Just had to dump a ton stuff hanging around for too long. All clear now.

  • Cisco IronPort Alert Notification 12/15/2011

    To Cisco IronPort customers:
License key notification emails that were sent from Cisco  IronPort yesterday between 11am and 4PM PST and that appear to have  incorrect end dates can be disregarded.  The key information within  those emails contained old data.  Customers can view their correct  license key information through the Cisco IronPort appliance GUI.
We sincerely apologize for any confusion this has caused.
    Best regards,

Hi, this is a (XML) report generated by AutoSupport feature. It contains information about alerts, uptime, output of status command etc.
AutoSupport is used by Cisco to better support and design future system changes and it can be used for some troubleshooting purposes also.
AutoSupport can be enabled/disabled in System Administration -> Alerts -> Alert Settings.
You can choose to send these reports only to the Cisco and not to send weekly reports to system users configured on the appliance by removing checkbox "Send copy of weekly AutoSupport reports to System Information Alert recipients.". Reports are sent to users configured to receive system alerts (info level).

  • Icon bounce notification problem with hidden dock

Hi: I think this has been reported on macosxhints for the mail app, but I'm seeing it in other applications too. Specifically, I have Adium setup to notify me via a bouncing dock icon on new messages. I also have a hidden dock.
I've noticed that on new messages, initially the dock icon bounce will be visible. But if I mouse over the dock area to unhide + hide the dock, the bouncing will no longer be visible (it is still bouncing, and I can unhide the dock to confirm - just not visible when the dock is hidden anymore). If I click on the dock icon to check my message, any subsequent messages from Adium result in the dock icon bounce not being visible with the dock hidden. Once again, it is bouncing, just not visible.
As described in http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090330170041769, there are certain ways to avoid this, or even to recover from this, but I end up missing my IMs pretty often.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

Thank you Barry. I wonder if anyone else has the answer to that question. I have many different view options for different folders, and it would be a pain to have to reset each one of them.

  • Never include orig. message into bounce message/DSN

    Hi all
How can i configure IronPort to never include the original message body into bounce messages or DSNs?
I would like to always include header information (sender, receipient, subject) of the original mail, but never body information or even attachments?
I already tried cli-command bounceconfig, an set max_bounce_copy=1, but then the header is also not included...?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
This one is a bit tricky. The RFC does not state that one "MUST" include a copy of the original message however we do as in general its good practice and it is seen as a courtesy to the recipient.
That being said you may be able to eliminate most of the original message. You were on the right track with that option but I think you were looking for size not number of copies.
You will need to make this modification via the CLI using the command bounceconfig. Depending on the number of bounce profiles you have you may need to edit each to achive the desired results. By default there is only 1 profile listed as default.
    The value you want ot chage is the following;

  • Workflow outbound notification not displaying certain information

    Hi All,
We have an issue with PO notification. Randomly some of the PO approval notification emails are not displaying certain feilds like Ship-to, bill-to and PO Number, but it displays the PO lines properly. Also this is only happening for POs having attachments.
Blank fields in PO Approval Emails
Have found a bug "Bug 2646120: E-MAILED PO DOES NOT DISPLAY ADDRESSES OF SUPPLIER, SHIP-TO OR BILL-TO" in metalink which is similar , but it seems to be setup issue. In our case issue is getting fixed after we bounce notification mailer. I think this is happening because of workflow reaching certain limits or either some or other bug with workflow. Please let me know if any one had similar experiences.
    Thanks,

Was checking whether any one has seen similar issues and are there any limitations with mail size/attachment size for workfow outbound notification. I could not get this info in metalink or google.

  • Turning off "Delivery Notification" messages

Is it possible to totally suppress messages regarding delivery status from Postmaster? I run a pair of JESMS 6.2 servers which are SMTP relays primarily and the accounts used to send mail are not "people" but services. I'd like the "Delivery Notification: Message has been delayed/failed/etc" to not be generated. I think there's a setting in imta.cnf for this but am wary of the syntax. Can anyone advise what the line should look like?

Is it possible to totally suppress messages regarding delivery status from Postmaster? What you propose in contrary to the general nature of email delivery (we strive to not silently 'lose' email which is what this translates too) so there isn't a simple one command to achieve it.
You could prevent notification/disposition emails by using the notificationchannel/dispositionchannel keyword:
    http://msg.wikidoc.info/index.php/Dispositionchannel%2C_notificationchannel_Channel_Options
This allows you to change the source channel of these emails. Then by adding a 'discard;' sieve sourcefilter to this new process channel, the emails should be dropped.
"defaults notices 1 2 4 7 logging copywarnpost copysendpost postheadonly noswitchchannel immnonurgent maxjobs 7 defaulthost blah.com blah.com"The copywarnpost and copysendpost are the keywords used to control the behaviour of sending a copy of the bounce/notification message to the postmaster. It doesn't control whether the original bounce/notification message is created. If you don't care about these postmaster copies you can disable them by replacing copysendpost with nosendpost and copywarnpost with nowarnpost.

  • My iCloud server is bouncing email

For some reason email addressed to my account is recognized as spam, even though it is not. I checked the sending account's IP address [noted below] with MXTOOLBOX, it isn't coming up bad. Then I checked the account IP listed in the bounce message and likewise. Why is the iCloud server bouncing back emails addressed to me? Here is the bounce notification I received... (obfuscated my email for security reasons).
    Email clipping:
This message was created automatically by mail delivery software.

I tried sending from another email address and that works OK. So I conclude that me.com server software has mistakenly declared my email as spam for some unknown reason. How can this be fixed?

You have to delete the old account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • Better management of multiple accounts on Mail.app

When using multiple accounts on Mail.app, it is possible to have different colors for each account, so that it is easier to avoid sending email from the wrong account?

You're undoubtedly better off to set the mail on the server to forward to your central account, and only maintain one account in Mail. Trying to set up rules in Mail to download mail and then forward it is just going to become cumbersome, and runs the risk of creating some kind of infinite mail loop. (For example, someone sends something to one address, it gets forwarded but for some reason your primary account's mailbox is full. The other address gets the bounce notification and forwards it back to the primary, which generates another bounce... you see where this is going, I'm sure.

The SMTP server receives the mail. It tells the client (your code, mail reader, whatever) that is has accepted the connection. That is the extent of the conversation. The SMTP protocol does not report on delivery steps, delivery status and so on.
From a SMTP protocol perspective, the mail payload was delivered to that server. And that's it.
The mail delivery runs into a problem. It could be on the SMTP server that accepted your mail. It could be a SMTP server on the other side of the world that is passing your e-mail along, 24 hours later.
There are 2 types of problems. A soft bounce. This means that the server attempted delivery, and it failed - but the delivery attempt can be retried. For example, there could be a network problem (and this could shortly be rectified). In such a case, that SMTP server will look at the sender's address and send a soft bounce notification to the sender. It will describe the basic problem and how it will be handled - e.g. mail server may perform 3 more attempts at delivery in the next 12h and then hard bounce your e-mail.
A hard bounce is a fatal error. For example, the SMTP server attempts to deliver your e-mail to its final destination (the mail server of the recipient's domain). That server says that the recipient (mail user) does not exist at that domain.
In that case, the SMTP server will send the sender of that e-mail a hard bounce notification - informing the sender of what the fatal error is.
So in order to get the bounce message, you need to supply a valid sender e-mail address when delivering that e-mail to the SMTP server. You then need to monitor that e-mail account (using the POP3 or IMAP protocols) for bounce e-mail notifications.
However, even that will not indicate whether that original e-mail your code send was delivered successfully. And this is the bottom line - there are no guarantees. The SMTP and POP3/IMAP protocols cannot and do not guarantee you being able to determine whether or not an e-mail reached its intended destination.
This is often why e-mails are send with a URL and a request that the recipient please click the URL when receiving the e-mail. That is the only method to determine whether the recipient received the e-mail, provided the recipient is willing to click that URL in that e-mail message.

  • Email sent from Mail (Mavericks) not getting received!?

When I send an email it leaves the Outbox and winds up in Sent, but it is not received at the other end. It  disappears into the void: no error message, no bounce notification, nothing. It's hard to say how long this has been going on since I have no way of knowing which emails were received and which weren't.
My email is hosted with Bluehost. (I have a ticket open with them but they take up to 72 hours to respond.) According to Connection Doctor their SMTP server is working. Mail sent via their webmail interface works fine. Nor is it any particular receiving domain; test mails to my Gmail and Yahoo accounts were also not received.
I have all kinds of other complaints about Mail (in particular with search) that I've chosen to live with but this problem is obviously intolerable. Is there anything I can try while I wait for Bluehost to verify that the server's working?
