Ironport C170 hard disk orange light problem

hi,
I have a new C170, there're 2*250G hard disk ,RAID 1, I had see the specification ,C170 support hot-swappable.At first, both hard disk is green. but when I remove one of them, and then install back soon, The hard disk light change to orange, but the system still can operate.
May I know this hard disk is bad? In fact, C170 isnot support hot-swappable hard disk?
Thanks a lot!!

Found on Cisco Website..to insert the drive the unit needs to be off. The light is amber while the RAID array is being rebuilt. Read below.
The Raid on the Cisco Web Security Applicance S170 or Cisco Email Security Appliance C170 is software based, it is hot removable but it is not hot insertable.
The drive can be removed while the power is turned on, so as to be certain which drive LED indicates failure.
The replacement drive should not be inserted, while the power is turned on.
Procedure:
1. Confirm which drive that has failed, by looking at the front panel drive LED that is amber/red.
LED
besides
0
refer to the
bottom drive
failure and needing replacement.
LED
besides
1
refer to the
top drive
failure and needing replacement.
2. While the power is turned on, press the button for the drive cage, to release the faulty drive.
3. Shutdown the Security Appliance
4. Insert the replacement drive into the drive cage.
5. Power on the Security Appliance
The Replacement drive will have amber light on it, while the raid is being rebuilt.

  • The dreaded 3F0, "hard disk not exist" problem

Okay, I have a degree in EE with a minor in comp sci.  I understand how bios' work, etc.  This is why the "answers" HP "tech support" gave me make absolutely no sense.   Could someone please shed some light on this bizarre problem?   I am trying to install a BRAND NEW, WORKING hard drive in a DV7-6163 and the laptop refuses to recognize the existence of the SATA drive.   I have tried this drive in another laptop and IT WORKS,  I have tried other working hard drives in this machine and they DO NOT work.   I have checked to make sure the SATA cable was good....yes!    I went as far as to switch the connector from the DVD drive to the SATA port that was meant for the hard drive.   Guess what,  IT WORKS and the laptop thinks there is a hard drive installed (it even runs the hd diag.. no more "hard disk not exist" error!!)  SO I now know that that actual hardware port is able to communicate with a SATA device.  HP has been LESS THAN HELPFUL as they insist it must be a bad drive or bad main board (even after I explained my various tests demonstrate that it cannot be (why does the port that refuses to recognize the hard drive talk fine to the DVD drive??).   So the only thing left is either a corrupted bios, or a major firmware issue with the code.    Could someone please point me in the right direction?   This was a very expensive laptop and I am ready to throw it through a window!!

Could you provide a link to the UEFI diagnostics utility?  I tried to google it, but there are so many hits, it makes it confusing to know which one!    Are you saying that the UEFI diag dos utility can bypass the bios functions?  HP blatently LIES about the ability to access the advanced bios settings!   How do I know?  I have the Insyde H20 EzH20 tool.   For some reason i cannot get it to work with my dv7 bios (it is RSA signed), but it works fine on my DV6 bios and allows you to access a plethora of advanced settings!   Namely the SATA mode which I sorely need access to.     How HP justifies not allowing a customer access to settings on property we own is beyond me.   Of course the impetus must be they want to be able to charge us to change a simple setting.    I will NEVER buy HP again!  Twenty years ago they were a respectable brand.   Today, they are all about squeezing every drop of blood from the customer!

  • Hard Disk or Power Problem

I have a Powerbook that I have had for many years now. Recently it hasn't been booting up. I hit the start button and it chimes like it usually does but the screen and hard disk don't do anything. Sometimes it does boot up but it doesn't start easily. When it does boot sometime freezes when I go through the login and when loading the desktop but once the desktop is loaded it works fine until it goes to sleep. I just bought a new battery for it this summer. I have been reading though the Discussions and I figure my computer is either having power problems when starting up or I need a new hard disk. Any thoughts?

You will find step by step directions at iFixit. Note that your computer does not have the EMI finger referred to in the directions. Also, be especially careful with the tiny screws in the sides on the computer. You don't want to strip the heads or it will be very difficult to get them out. Here are few tips you may find helpful:
    • Print out the ifixit directions as well as the screw guide ahead of time.
    • Be sure you have the right tools. You don't want to damage the screw heads or you may never get them out. And the Torx screw driver is critical. For a spudge I use the handle of an old toothbrush (choose one made of hard plastic), cut off the brush and beveled the handle end like a flat blade screw driver). For some spudge jobs a credit card will do the trick.
    • Click on the pages of each step which involved removing screws to enlarge, then print out the pages. Poke holes in the paper where the screws were removed, poke the screws in the holes and stack the pages in order in which there were removed. Reassembling is a lot easier. No cups to tip over and spill. No guessing. Each screw is exactly in the right place. You can use an ice cube tray, egg carton, dixie cups etc. I previously used small medicine cups one for the screws in each step. I nested them so that the last ones out and the first to go back in are on top. (Some users report cutting up the screw guide and placing the applicable section in each container.)
    • Be very careful pulling out leads. Hold the lead as close to the plug as possible and wiggle (the plug ) to loosen its grip. Don’t hold the wires and pull as that can damage the cable, or worse, in some instances pull the wires out of the plug. Indeed, some users have pulled the socket off the logic board! Use needle nose pliers or tweezers if you can access the plug, or nudge the plug with a small instrument to help loosen its grip.
    • Use force gently in removing parts. Separating upper and lower case takes some doing. Use a plastic tool (spudge) so as not to leave marks.
    • Refer to the screw guide when reassembling computer. Putting longer screws in the wrong place can perforate the circuit board.
So will I be able to put the OS and everything on by the installation discs?
Yes you will. Indeed you may be able to clone the contents of your current HDD to the new HDD by placing the drive in a firewire enclosure and formatting and cloning the new drive before installing it in the computer. If you have data you need to backup and have a sound installation on your current HDD this might be an option to consider.
When you get your new HDD it will need to be formatted before you can install the OS on it. If you need directions for formatting and installation, I can post step by step directions here for you. Let me know.
    Good luck.

  • Help please! - Hard disk Volume Header problems and 'Beach Ball' hangs

    Hi all
I was wondering if anyone can help me out with my hard drive problems. Until recently, everything was going fine with my Powerbook after upgrading to 10.4.2. Then all of a sudden, one day, at the login screen I got a beach ball hang which lasted around 4 minutes. When the dock is launched, I get another beach ball hang for an additional 3 or 4 minutes.
When it finally finishes logging in everything is fine, I can access all my files and do whatever I want to do at full speed, that is, until an app asks me for my administrators password which welcomes back the beach ball and a system hang for another 3-4 minutes or so.
Disk Utility says that I have minor Volume header problems but will not fix it as it abruptly quits before it finishes diagnosing the drive.
I have Disk Warrior 3.0.3 and have tried to use it but when I boot off the CD it does not recognise my hard drive for fixing puroposes but still displays the hard drive in the Hardware tab.
The SMART status of the drive is verified and there doesnt seem to be any problems in that respect.
I have repaired permissions, ran all the processes in Onyx and still no joy.
Finally, I have tried to use TechTool Pro but on a surface disk check it fails halfway through after shifting a few bad sectors around.
Everything seems to be fine if you ignore all these beach ball hangs but I'm worried about a very imminent hard drive fail. I am now in the process of zeroing all the empty spaces on my hard disk to see if the badsector problems can be fixed in this way.
When the beach ball appears I can hear the hard disk making a scraping sound if this helps at all.
Please help me! Its driving me nuts! I am also currently working abroad hence I don't have my Mac OS X Tiger install disks on me otherwise I'd just do an archive and reinstall.
Is this a physical problem? Volume header problem? I'm so confused!
Any help greatly appreciated! Many thanks...

It sounds as if you've attempted the appropriate fixes for your drive... Disk Utility, Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro and Onyx. If none of these utilities have repaired the problem then perhaps there is a hardware failure of some sort... perhaps a head crash has done some physical damage.
How old is this hard drive? Is it the original?
It's unfortunate that you don't have your Tiger install discs as a reinstall of the OS might relieve the problem. But I doubt it since, as you say, "the disc makes a scraping sound". That suggests to me the problem may be physical damage or wear of the hard drive.
If I were in your shoes, I would backup any critical files now, before the drive fails completely.
I'd replace the drive, and probably buy an external enclosure (USB or Firewire) for the old drive to allow for data retrieval until it failed.
Unfortunately, replacing the drive will require your software install discs... =( ... can't help you there.

  • External Hard disk has space problem for Time Machine

Im not sure this is the right place to post this, but I've just got OSX.5 so Time Machine is new to me. I've got a 500Gb Firewire Lacie Drive which I now have, as far as I can see, about 110GB of stuff in. I have a bout 300Gb to back up. Currently my mac can only see 260GB free, which means theres about 150GB that isnt explained. I have run Disk Inventory, which shows the dot files on the drive. There seem to be hardly any. Is there anything else that could be taking up such a large amount of disk space? Theres one movie file of 28GB that I cannot move off the drive.

Let's see what Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) says. When it starts, click the top line for your drive in the sidebar (should have size and make), then the Partition tab. Towards the bottom is a *Total Capacity* line, followed by two different numbers: one in GB, the other in bytes. The first will be about 465 GB, the second roughly 500 billion. This is the different way of counting: decimal vs. binary.
There's also a *Partition Map Scheme* line. This should be followed by GUID or +Apple Partition Map.+ If your drive isn't one of those, you're going to have a problem using it with Time Machine. Report back what this says.
In the center part of the display is a diagram showing all the partitions currently on the disk. Each is represented by a box, with a name in the center, and the amount used represented by light blue shading.
If there's only one partition, it's total size and amount available will be in the center, shown in GB.
If there are 2 or more, click each one in turn to see it's sizes. The Total of the sizes should be almost the same as the total at the bottom (the Partition Map takes a bit of space).
It sounds like you may have 2 partitions, one for TM backups, one for your "other stuff". If so, each partition is treated separately for most purposes: there should be two icons on your desktop and/or Finder sidebar, for example.
Report back what you find, and whether it makes sense to you or not. Then we can figure out what's going on and what you need to do.
But note this: This drive is a bit small to use with Time Machine. TM works best if it has 2-3 times the space of what it's backing-up, so it can keep a few months of your backups. See item #1 of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum.
Even if you could use the entire 465 GB or so, that's less than twice the 300 gb you want to back up. That would work, for a while, but depending on how you use your Mac, TM may not be able to keep your backups for very long.

  • 3 orange lights problem

My 2nd gen shuffle is playing up, it plays music fine but when I connect it to my computer the light flashes orange 3 times the nothing. It doesn't charge up, and it cannot be found in Windows Explorer or Itunes.
Is there a fix for this or is my shuffle fubard?

This indicates a problem with the USB port(s)... what other USB devices are attached to your computer?
Try this: Shut down your computer and disconnect the power plug from power strip or wall socket for up to 5 minutes. Then reboot and try the shuffle after computer starts up.
The above procedure causes the USB controller to be completely reset.

To save weight or whatever the Lenovo engineers decided to ommit a harddisk (SSD) activity light. As background applications might do a lot of mass storage work it would be helpful to find out if a slow laptop is due to exactly that.
There is a solution! Activity Indicator will show a non intrusive indicator on the system bar. You can download it here:

I agree. But Activity Indicator is a very light weight app that does just one thing and does it well.
I've been using it for several years now on a couple of ThinkPads that I manage remotely when I'm travelling. Even though those ThinkPads do have HDD activity LEDs it's a bit hard to see them across the Atlantic

  • WRT54GS Orange light problem

Hi, I've had the WRT54 for about 6 months and has been working fine until now. I have my router connected wirelessly to my laptop and computer. The router is connected to my DSL modem. I just installed Vista and reformatted my laptop and then tried to connect my laptop to the router. This is where everything went terribly wrong. After trying to establish a connection between my laptop and router, the Cisco Systems logo went orange. Originally my laptop had the LELA installed before I put on Vista. I tried connected to my router with my laptop forgetting that I didn't have LELA installed onto it anymore. I have updated the firmware on my router. I have tried resetting the router for 30 seconds and then updating the firmware. I have tried to install the Vista LELA with no success. I don't know what to do anymore. It is driving me crazy!! Any help would be appreciated. Jag

EVERY time you plug it in while it's already charged to
80% or more the shuffle enters a "trickle charge" mode
which can take a seemingly, excruciatingly long time to complete.
Make sure your computer doesn't sleep during when the shuffle
    is plugged in for charging.

  • Problem with formatting the saved text to hard disk

I use a modified code from Macromedia for saving the content of a text filed on hard disk. See code at the end.
The code works fine and a text file is saved in the given location on the hard disk.
The problem is that all of the content of the text field appears in a very long single line.
The line breaks in the text field does not appear at all in the saved text file.
    for example:
if the following is the the content of the text filed on the stage:
    abcdef
    jhijklm
    nopqrst
    uvxwyz
then the saved file is like: abcdefjhijklmnopqrstuvxwyz
No line break happens! How can this be fixed?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Satellite M30X - high hard disk drive utilization

After login in Windows XP (SP2), my toshiba laptop is very slow. The hard disk drive light is continuously on for 5 minutes. I've looked at the task manager, but CPU utilization is low and RAM usage is low. There is no program that seems to use a lot of CPU or RAM.
I've actually turned off the paging file to see if the problems due to intensive use of the paging file on the HDD, but problem persists. The model of the laptop is Satellite M30X-113.
I don't know if it's related, but this problem arose around the time that I've taken out a 256 MB RAM module and installed a 512 MB one (making the total ram memory 1024 MB).

If this issue has begun after installation of the new memory module then I would say that the new memory module is responsible for this issue.
You could also try to put back the 256MB module to check if the issue still persist.
This would be the easiest way for checking

    Hi,
I have had my time capsule set up as a hard disk, and has been accessing it through a USB cable.
AFAIK this is impossible so we would all be fascinated into this setup.. really it is important.. if you can access it this way plugged into a computer it is the first we have heard.
Tell us everything.. a few screen shots of the setup.. what it is plugged into .. firmware setup..

Plug it into a computer by Ethernet.. press and hold the reset and you should be able to find it easily and once setup you can return it in appropriate manner to the network.

The hard disk access light flashes continually at a constant repetition rate of roughly 1 to 2 times/second (and I can hear the hard drive heads thumping faintly at this rate).
I have no viruses, and Crystal Disk reports the hard drive has no issues.  I ran the Windows Resources utility,  selected the Hard Disk window and monitored the processes & apps doing read/writes to the hard disk. The preloaded McAfee Antivirus Plus occasionally accesses the Hard disk heavily, then goes away. There are other Windows System functions (logging etc) that occasionally access heavily too. All the drive accessing shown in the Resources utility are random with no apparent pattern nor specific repetition rate.
Not sure if this is a Windows issue or a hard disk hardware "feature", but at this rate the hard disk will likely wear out prematurely.
I  Google'd this and found that folks having the issue tried various adjustments/options with Windows drive indexing to no avail. So, indexing does not appear to be the problem.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.
