IRONPORT Logging (Trimming?)

We currently have 2 IronPort (S370) Proxy servers that through the GUI (System Administration / Log Subscription) we FTP our logs to a SPLUNK server for archiving / reporting.
Our splunk server has a 3GB daily indexing limit which has been exceeded 9 times in the last month.
Is there a way to customize the log data for which I am only interested in? I know through the GUI, we can add fields to be logged but I suspect whats being logged by default is already the minimum.
Is this log customization possible or do I need to open up my wallet and purchase a larger SPLUNK license?

Not sure, will have to look at that option. We are really looking for the transaction data that is in the w3c log file.

Can you please explain in more detail what you meant by that. I was thinking of trying to trim the Audit log using this script in small batch. Can you please let me know if this script seems right?

You probably want to create a new log subscription for "SMTP Logs"
Go to System Administration/Log Subcriptions.
Click Add Log Subscription
Pick SMTP Conversation Logs.
Pick a log name (will be the folder name that gets created for the log files)
The defaults for the rest should be fine... maybe tweak rollover...
Make sure to remove it after you're done, its going to eat space and probably a little proc... its VERY verbose, but it should show you what you need.

Delete mail message information from logs according MID

Hi,
I am interesting if any way exists to delete specific message (according MID) from IronPort mail logs .
The problem: VIP user send mail message with very sensitive information (in message subject) and we want to delete this specific message from any IronPort logs, because our HelpDesk have access to message tracking and we really don't want that HelpDesk can see subject (even accidentally)

Do not see cron.daily log

So, I set up a TRIM script for cron.daily
I did this 2 days ago BTW. I cannot seem to find any logs for it /var/logs/
Any ideas?

I have no /home btw which is why not in script.

This morning, I got error message:

then check doc for error 806, 6103. Looks like something possibly wrong. System looks like fine at this time. Want to know how to do more check for this case to make sure ase(12.5) it's okay.

For the issue of sybsystemdb/log filling up ... enable the auto-truncation of the log (sp_dboption sybsystemdb,'trunc','true').
NOTE: sybsystemdb is typically used to manage distributed transactions and can include keeping track of some proxy calls; for example the sybsystemdb log can fill up due to a high volume of proxy calls; unless you're working with distributed transactions the recovery of the sybsystemdb database usually isn't a concern, ie, just enable 'trunc log on chkpt' to keep the log trimmed
For the 806/6103 errors ... without knowing more details about what processing was hung, which processes may have been killed, etc ... I'd bounce the dataserver and run 'dbcc checkalloc()' against mydb to see if this is a permanent or transient error.

Backup log location

Can anyone tell me where to find the equivalent of "backup.log" in server 2008. I cannot find anything obvious on disk. I want to find the information that you see in the GUI regarding success / failure. We have an application for Server 2003 that looks through date time stamps and 'signatures' / sizes of these backup logs to work out if backups have completed correctly. I would like to duplicate this in 2008.
Also, another backup question, if you have Exchange 2007 server on Server 2008, when a full block level backup runs I have read (not on MS site) that Exchange will be backed up and its logs trimmed "correctly" by the VSS writer. So if you were to do a full server restore of that server following a hardware failure the Exchange installation would be correctly restored and the database / logs correctly in sync. Can anyone confirm this.

I am asking because I sometimes get "Warning: The backup operation that started at ... has encountered errors." on our SBS2010 but no info which files were not readable or the cause of the errors.

Dmarc - few emails with ironport hostname

We have published SPF, DKIM and DMARC and now we start getting DMARC Reports. What is strange is that there are few messages that are send with email Ironport hostname? We have some situations when we return mail reject custome message but that message is sent as [email protected] not as ironport.hostname.local. How can we find what message is send with ironport hostname because if we search in message tracking “sender contains ironport.hostname – nothing is found”.

Beside that do you have some experience with DMARC and when some other companies have some auto forwarder rule - then forwarder does not rewrite sender and then you get DMARC fail results?

We have this problem as well.
I see lines like this from the ironport log:
Delayed: DCID XXXXXX MID YYYYYY to RID 0 - 4.1.0 - Unknown address error ('450', ['4.1.8 <[email protected]>: Sender address rejected: Domain not found']) []
I'm guessing from timing and frequency that this is actually the Ironport delivering its DMARC reports to other domains.
The only place in the config where that name is found is the Ironport host name.

IronPort Outlook Plugin 7.2 SCCM Silent Install

I followed the instructions from the adminiguide to create an .iss file and create an application package/advertisement in SCCM. I used the command line from the guide and get the error ResultCode=-3. When I run the command line locally it is successful, however when deploying through SCCM it always returns ResultCode=-3. The following is the command line I used to install.

I just found a resolution to this last week. You can get an msi installation by using
CiscoEmailSecurity-7-2-0-039.exe /a
then go through the setup to extract the files to a selected location. It should extract an .msi installer, and two folders called CommonAppData and program files. You will need all three of these in the same directory.
After getting the msi, you can just install using
msiexec.exe /i "msiname.msi" /qn
for a silent install. I still had to use an msi editor (installshield) to create a transform to remove two custom actions that were causing errors during the msi installtion: CheckLanguageUpdaterResult and CheckUpdateFeaturesResult. The application still installed correctly before removing those errors, I just needed to remove them so SCCM would not report a failed installation.
I was suprised though that it wasn't noted in thier documentation that you could obtain an msi installation using the /a switch, it is just something that you would have to know is available in some installshield installations.

Another slow Powerbook

Hello all,
I have done searching for tips to see if I can fix the slowness myself but I need some more advice because I've tried all I can think.
I have a 12 inch G4 Powerbook 1.33 processor.
Lately is has been really slow. It has gotten progressively worse overtime. It is now to the point where I really can't use my mac effectively at all. I'm actually posting this from a different computer because the Discussion Board kept timing out. I click on something and it could take a couple minutes to react or may time out all together.
My PB is especially slow with a browser window open and another any other app. I turn off the airport card and close the browser and it suddenly runs faster. I'm using Firefox
Other system details:
I have base RAM installed. I just ordered 1GB to upgrade.
My hard drive is somewhat full but not maxed out.
I run MacJanitor regularly to clean house
I'm running 10.4.8
I've installed no new software
Any suggestions are appreciated.

Powerbook 12in Mac OS X (10.4) Very slow

Welcome to the Apple discussions.
First, running OS X Tiger on 256mb is a prescription for slowness. The additional 1GB memory should make a difference and be noticeable.
You probably know you should keep 10% of your hard drive free for system usage.
MacJanitor is fine to keep your system logs trimmed. However, there is other disk housekeeping that can be done. I periodically use OnyX for disk cleaning and maintenance functions. You can also use it to check your preference files to ensure none are corrupt. OnyX can be found at http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html
Some have found that backing their system up to an external hard drive, then erasing their internal drive and loading the external drive back to the hard drive can speed things up.

Lync for Mac 14.0.10 (141024) not working with latest OS X Yosemite

Hi -- I am having issues logging in to Lync.
I recently installed OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 and installed Lync for Mac 14.0.10 (141024) and I have not been able to log in to Lync. When I try to sign in, I get the error message "Sign in to Microsoft Lync failed because the service is not available
or you may not be connected to the internet." I get this error message even though I am logged in to my company's network/internet.
Is anyone else having this problem and is there a solution?

Yes! I've been wrestling with this problem all day! I've tried manually setting the server names, removing stored credentials, removing keychain entries, and finally clean uninstall/reinstall. No luck.

Clearing The Hard Disk

Hello All,
I just bought my mac mini from my brother, for the soul purpose of using Final Cut Express HD. Well my problem is that I can't import videos becasue there is only about a Gig of memory left on the hard disk. I don't know how so much space got used up but about 72 GB is used up right now. Can someone tell me a way to start fresh with the hard disk, not delete everything but to just clear out all his old crap? I would appreciate it. Thanks a lot.

When obtaining a Mac from another person, it would usually be a good thing to simply reformat it and reinstall MacOS and the software you need, to make sure you don't end up with a system full of potential issues resulting from it's prior use. If you have the original install disk that came with the mini, you can do this by inserting it, then rebooting the system with the C key held down. This forces the mini to boot from the install disk.
From there, select 'erase and install'. This will erase all data (so don't do this if you need something already on there) and then install a fresh copy of MacOS. After that, when the system reboots it'll be the same as if it just came out of the box, and will ask you a few basic configuration questions and then to register it.
If you absolutely must keep the existing MacOS install, beware that the system will barely run with so little free space on the drive. You'll need to clear a fair bit of that at the very least! The easiest tool for the purpose of tracing what is taking up the used space is a freeware app called 'WhatSize'. You can download it from www.versiontracker.com and use it to examine what is on the drive, thus allowing you to find and remove unwanted material quickly.
By the way, to the other poster - no, Mac Janitor cannot be the cause of the problem you describe because it doesn't do anything that impacts the functionality of MacOS. It simply runs some basic log trimming and clearing tasks.

MSG size exceeded

Hello ,
i hope i become an answer to this problem:
we use C600 Machines , and every time a msg size is exceeded
the customer becomes a Notification that your msg size is exceeded.
BUT i cant see any entry in Ironport Log files
ONLY this:
New SMTP ICID xxxxxxxx
ICID xxxxxxxx RELAY SG CUSTOMER match IP .....
ICID xxxxxxxx close
is there any possibility in this case , that i see msg's in Logfiles ?

I believe both of these happen on the IronPorts, it depends more on the sending MTA than the recieving IronPort.
It all depends on if the sending MTA honors the EHLO SIZE limit feature and does not attempt a message larger than the advertize max. In this case you have a simple ICID xxx close, because the sending MTA did not hit the size limit it simply closes the connection and generated a NDR to the sender saying the message size was beyond what the recieving MTA would accept before it even attempted to send the message.
Second case is when the sending MTA does not use the EHLO SIZE limit feature and sends the message forcing the IronPort to hard reject the message once it hit the max size limit, hence the ICID xxx Receiving Failed: Message size exceeds limit. Same NDR gets generated, but after the wasted bandwidth. :(
