Irregular spaces after pasting in ID

When I copy text from either Word or Text Editor into ID, there are irregular spaces between sentences throughout the 200 page document.
I am a newbie to ID, but I have been trying a multitude of things to fix this...and still have the problem. Can someone please help?
(A little background...the person who sent me these files, sent them in individual emails in which I had to copy and paste in Word. They inserted spaces, returns, etc. manually.)

Some of us older folks who grew up with typewriters learned that you have to hit the return key (or worse...hit the carriage-return lever...GASP!) at the end of the line, and it could be that the person who keyed this in did that instead of letting Word do the automatic wrapping. How ever it got that way, Joel is right in that you need to remove them.
Another way you may consider is using Find/Change. Enter ^p into the Find field (that's the code for a paragraph return), place the cursor at the beginning of your text and hit the Find button. When it finds the first paragraph return, decide if you want to keep it or not. If you want to remove it, hit either the Change button, then the Find button to move to the next one, or use the Change/Find button to change and find in one step.
Without anything entered into the Change field, it will replace the paragraph return with nothing, which may or may not be what you want. If there is no space between the last character of the line and the paragraph return, you will likely get the last word of one line combined with the first word of the next line, and you really don't want to have to clean that up. Instead, consider replacing the paragraph returns with a space (by typing a space into the Change field). This may give you some double spaces to clean up later, but you can fix that fairly easily.
At the top of the Find/Change window, you will see Query:. If you click the blue arrows to the right, you can select from a number of GREPs. One of them is Multiple Space to Single Space. If you choose it, it will load a bunch of code into the find and change fields. If you hit Change All, it will find any instance of two spaces or more in a row and change them to single spaces within the selection, story, document or what ever you have selected in the Search: field. If there is any reason you need some instances to remain two spaces or more, don't use Change All. Instead, use find, change, find next, change/find or which ever combination you're comfortable with. You may find that people who hit return at the end of each line also use two spaces after each sentence, which is also a typewriter convention that we don't use any longer in electronic typesetting. This is a good way to fix that problem too.
Also common are two returns to separate paragraphs, which should be done with paragraph spacing, but that's another story, so one step at time.

  • How do I remove extra space after an image in an ePub created with InDesign?

I've designed more than a dozen ebooks with InDesign and have recently been having problems with the spacing after images, both images that are anchored in the text or stand-alone and exported through the Articles Panel. Following are a few details:
    • In the Object Export Settings, I have the vertical spacing set to 0 both before and after the images and no breaks added.
    • In the Export panel, I do not have any vertical spacing applied to images.
    • I do not have any Object Style settings applied.
    • It doesn't seem to matter if I anchor the image into the text or have it as a stand-alone image in the Articles Panel with the caption after it in a separate text box, also in the Articles Panel.
    • I broke down the ePub into an html file and did not see any div or span classes that were different between images that are showing correctly vs. incorrectly.
    • Extra space appears in both iBooks on my computer, as well as on my iPad.
    • I converted to a mobi file for the Kindle and the space wasn't there.
See attached screen shot. There shouldn't be that big gap between the image and the orange caption.
Any help or suggestions anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. I feel like I've tried everything I can think of with the same results over and over!

Yes. That is the technique I traditionally use to drop an image into text. I even cut and pasted again as you suggested with the same result. Trust me, this is driving me nuts. I'm not doing anything different than before, but my results are different, even within the same document. I'll attach a few examples, all from this same document.
How the space after my in-line image is supposed to look:
And then a few of the pages with the mystery gap:

  • Control space after the Drop Cap

    ID3, XP
We character style drop caps. When the DC is a single character, we use the tracking in the character style to add space to the right of the dropped character. However, this method cannot be used when it is a two character drop, in this case, chapter numbers are dropped 2 lines. We want to adjust the space between the dropped number and the start of text, and keep that space equal on both lines.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

The first issue is still that humbled wasn't able to add space after the drop caps and maintain alignment of the text. Bottom line is that  his method of using character spacing was a bad hack. I'm pointing out that the alternative solutions he tried (ex. post #4) didn't work because he wasn't using the correct value for the number of drop characters. And per his post #21, he is still assuming that 2 is the correct value to define a double digit drop cap. If he gets past that, solutions to other complications may come easier.<br /><br />In fact, unless he needs some specific sized space HIS WHOLE PROBLEM FROM START TO FINISH could be solved simply by selecting 3 as the number of characters for his drop caps rather than sticking with 2. That would have the effect of including the space after the chapter numbers as part of the drop cap making it larger and adding considerably more space.<br /><br />If he does need more space, then he is going to have to add another character. But that character still has to be included in the DC character count:<br /><br />12<space>Text (3 drop caps)<br />12<hardspace>Text (3 drop caps)<br />12<space><hardspace>Text (4 drop caps)<br /><br />He can even use a tab character for a specific indent if he wants. Just switch a tab for the hardspace above.<br /><br />P.S. The same logic holds true for in single drop caps. If you want extra space after, increase the drop cap count to 2 to include the space after.

  • InCopy GREP: how can I search for a single space after a sentence?

In the Find/Change box in InCopy, there's a preset GREP command: "Multiple Space to Single Space." In the books I'm working on, we need to do the opposite. I know I should learn regular expressions, and I'd like to, but frankly I'm pressed for time, so here's my question:
What is the exact regular expression I should paste into the Find/Change box to find single spaces before sentences?
    Thanks!

In Find, in the GREP area, you need to enter
    Find What: \. \S
    backslash-period = find a period
tap the spacebar for a space ...there's a space after the period above
    backslash-cap S = not whitespace
If you want to change it to two spaces after a period, group the Find expression so you can replace the Found text in the Change to field.
    Find What: (\. )(\S)
    Change To: $1 $2
(I added a space after $1 so IC adds a second space after the period)

  • Red box after pasting a link

Seems like when I paste certain links into this forum, I get a silly red box with some type of error.
I further realize this is the success path at least for me.
When you paste a  link into the forum, the forum runs to the web page and attempts to find the title to the page and insert the title instead of copying  the link as is.  Of course, I want to copy the link as is.  If I wanted a link, I'd have clicked on a link icon.

  • Where does one set space after paragraph in the new Pages 5.0? It used to be under text in the Inspector in the previous version, but I just can't find it in this new version.

Where does one set space after paragraph in the new Pages 5.0? It used to be under text in the Inspector in the previous version, but I just can't find it in this new version. Paragraphs seem to only be dealt with in styles, and the Formatting window for text doesn't seem to have the space after paragraph contrtol that the older Inspector had. What am I missing?

Sorry I did this without looking:

  • Space after negating exclamation mark

Hi, is it possible to add a space after a negating exclamation mark in the code formatting rules such as:
    if (!true) {}   <- I don't want this style
    if (! true) {}  <- I do want this
I think that the Tools -> Options -> Text Editor settings give me quite limited choices when it gets to customizing your code formats. I want to do this for JavaScript if that matters.

The ! means that iPhoto has lost the link to the actual images
    i
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • ID CS4 slow after pasting text from MS Word

Each time I paste text from a Word document into my ID CS4 document, ID begins to run very slowly. I can't even type properly. Has anyone else seen this?
I have fixed this problem by copying all the text and pasting in the a new document (I thought the document was possibly corrupted). This fixed the problem, but it has happened multiple times now. Much of my information comes from engineers' word documents, so this is not convenient.

The best I can tell, it is related to the cross references, and that it happened after pasting was coincedental. It could have been that pasting made a cross referenced section move to another page, so it was trying to update.
The cross references are a little buggy:
EVERY time I create a cross ref from the cross ref menu (in the cross ref window), ID CS4 (with all patches) crashes. If I create them from the Text menu (at the top), it doesn't crash.
If you have a large number of cross refs in a doc, it becomes slow.
When slowness occurs, I have found that updating the cross refs and then resolving all errors in the cross ref window usually clears it up.

  • Create a list style with unique space after the last list item?

I should start by saying that I'm a web designer and therefore extremely used to using CSS for type setting to the point that I now become frustrated when going back to the print world
So here's what I'm trying to achieve:
    - I want to create a list style for bullet lists
    - I want there to be 3pt space after and space before paragraph breaks
    - I want there to be 9pt space after the entire list (or last list item)
I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this short of overriding the space after amount on the last item each time I use my style.

    Hi supportneeder
    Welcome to the forum.
    Try this link:

Pay attention to how +"styles work by example"+. Form up the list levels the way you want them and then select them to make the list style.
Personally I can't help remarking on the obtuse behavior of programmers that they manufactured all the problems on the internet and only now, more than a decade later, patch together "solutions" they struggle to implement due to the legacy of all the awful standards we never needed to have in the first place.
    Peter
btw The last list item is always a problem in typesetting. Usually you deal with it by having a particular style for that or the paragraph afte,r all of which can take multiple forms.

  • How can I keep my text format after pasting a text with a different format?

No matter when and where I start to write some text (whether it is a SImpleText, E-Mails, or anyother application's doc), if I have to cut and paste a text from a different source that is formatted differently than my original text (ie. the one I am already using ), once I have pasted the differently formatted text in my doc, the typeset changes while it continues to type with the same formatt used in the text I just pasted.
How can I continue typing with the same text formatt used before pasting the new text, after pasting the new text, without having to change size, font style etc. Is there a short cut?
What I have been doing to avoid this problem is: I usually type my entire text content (whether it is an E-Mail, or other doc) then, once I am done typing, I paste the text that was cut from a differently formatted document, so that my text remains with the same formatt in its integrity, while the pasted text stands out differently, but it is a bit complex doing that , because I not only have to remember to paste the other text when I am done typing (I run the risk of forgetting to paste the text I need to insert--which has happened already) or I keep struggling with my formatt change after the pasting of the new text, so my document text starts looking like the same text as the one which was just pasted.
Thanks for your time reading this!

    (1) First, let's make sure we're talking about the same thing. By "SImpleText, E-Mails" you mean TextEdit and Mail, right?
    (2) Some apps (TextEdit, Mail) use the text engine provided by Mac OS X. By and large, these apps will behave in a similar manner. Others (eg, MS Word) use their own text engine, and their behaviour can be quite different. For such an app you need to consult its manual.
    (3) In TextEdit, if you want the pasted text to adopt the current style, then use kurt188's tip.
    (4) However, if you may want the pasted text to retain its own attributes, while you continue to type in the previous style. I don't know of any shortcut or command that will achieve this. However, you can try to work around it.
(4.1) TextEdit has the Copy Style (⌘⌥C) and Paste Style (⌘⌥V) commands. If you haven't yet used it, ⌘⌥V will insert the default style. So type, paste, ⌘⌥V, then continue typing. If you have used, it will insert whatever style was copied. You can, type, ⌘V, click somewhere before the pasted text, ⌘⌥C, click after the pasted text, ⌘⌥V, and continue typing.
(4.2) Alternatively, type your text. Then type one more character, eg, "x". Then ←, ⌘V, ⇧→, and start typing. The new text should adopt "x"'s format. (This should work in Mail, too. I don't know, because IMHO e-mail should always be plain text.)

  • Pages crashed after pasting text from email - no longer able to access that document

I was working on a Pages document on my iPad, and after pasting text from an email, Pages closed. As of then, I was no longer able to open or email the document, whether on Pages itself, on iCloud or on iTunes. I worked two hours on this important document and am not sure whether this can be recovered. Any support would be most appreciated.

This is why I asked Apple to edit the entries as I showed above.
Of course, it would be useful to edit also the entry available in the iOS area.
Replace iWork for iOS by iWork (Keynote, Numbers, Pages) for iOS
or better add three entries :
    Keynote for iOS
    Numbers for iOS
    Pages for iOS
Having four entries pointing to the same forum would not be perfect but at least it would be clear and would be a viable scheme during the time required by engineers to find a way to split the existing iWork for iOS forum in three ones.

  • Space After - Text

Hi, I have some problem with the"space after" function.
As you can see in this image, the firts line, the headline, should send the next text, 10 points bellow.
But all the browsers that I test, they ignore this "css rule"...
    http://www.pgdesignrio.com/revistas.html
Safari, Firefox, Chrome in Mac.  IE 10.0.9

    Hi Dandalo,
There's a Muse bug that lets you set negative padding even though it is invalid in CSS.
You have -1 left padding applied to the headline which is making the entire padding CSS invalid.
If you change it back to 0, that should fix the issue. You can continue to use negative first line indent.
    Hope this helps.

  • Space after Paragraph: How much picas equal a blank line in Garamond Regular 7.5?

I'm using Indesign CC and  would like to add a blank line after every paragraph in my document. I found out how to do that, but the only unit I'm offered is picas. I could probably switch to inches, but that doesn't really help me. My main text is written in Garamond Regular font size 7.5 and I would like to have blank space after each paragraph equal to a blank line written in that font with that size. How do if find out much large a blank line with those font settings is? I guessed and it seems to be equal to 0p7, but it would be great if I could do that without guessing blindly. I'm glad for any help.

I am not sure to understand.  Garamond (or any other typeface) 7.5 equals to… 7.5 pts. But the size of a typeface is measured from ascender to descender, so it does not give you an accurate idea of the real height of the line. But leading is measured from baseline to baseline and this corresponds to the measure you are looking for. Once again, you need to know the leading value and you have to enter this value for the space after.
And 1 pica is equal to 12 pts.
