Irritating clone stamp in CS4.

Can someone please tell me how to turn off the mirroring aspect of the clone stamp in CS4 & return it to the way it worked in CS3 without magnifying & showing unfamiliar content?
Very many thanks for any help!

  • Is there anyone having problem with Clone Stamp in CS4?

Good Morning, I am using Photoshop CS4 Extended with Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit.  My computer is a Dell XPS 430, WITH 8GB of ram, 1.5TB of disk space,   ATI Radean HD 4800 Series adapter with 512MB memory.   When I bring up an image in Photoshop and click on Clone stamp I get the error message "could not use the clone stamp because of a program error."  I can still use Clone Stamp, but with some wied reults.  Sometime the middle of the brush turns bright white and do nothing.  Again it will clone the item clicked on, but would move the spot being cloned.  Other times when the brush is move from the spot being cloned it will clone other area without cliking on them.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop 4 times.  I have created a new account with administrative rights, which I unistalled and reinstalled Photoshop.  Two of the times that I uninstalled Photoshop I also used the Photoshop script to make sure all of Photoshop were uninstalled. I have also cleaned the register of Photoshop before reinstalling Photoshop.  Another item used to make sure there was no error with Vista was Windows cleanup installed tool.
Yesterday I checked my laptop and I am getting the same results as my PC.  The most recent thing that has been updated on both the PC and Laptop was Windows updates and Camera Ram 5.4.  Attached is a copy of a wierd result using clone tool.  I just clicked on the image and the orange spot appeared.  Is there anyone else who is having similar problems with Clone Stamp?

Have you applied the Photoshop 11.0.1 Patch?
Have you updated the video drivers?
If that doesn't help, try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
(A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.)

  • Clone Stamp in CS4

I'm use to using the clone stamp in the older photoshop.
Is there a way to turn off the preview stamp? Like when you hover the stamp over an area it shows you what its going to look like. I just work faster without it.
Also there is a delay from when I stamp to when it appears which also slows me down. Is it just my slow system? (P4 3.6ghz, 2GB ram, HD4650 graphics)
    thanks

On the Clone stamp options bar there is an icon to toggle on/off the clone source panel. In that panel, uncheck Show Overlay.

  • CS4 Clone Stamp and Dodge/Burn not Working

CS4 clone stamp is kaput. Flattening image does not help. Source region shows in the cursor circle when pointing to target region, but when I left-click and hold, the target region shows, and cloning does not occur. Tried resetting the tool, no help. Opacity is 59, flow is 85 and hardness is 51.
Likewise tried the dodge/burn tool, does not work either.
Using PS v. 11.0.1 Tried to download windows patch to update to v. 11.0.2, but the msi file is not recognized as a valid windows installer.
I have CS3 on my notebook. Cloning the same region there works fine.
    Any ideas appreciated.

I don't see anything obvious you've done wrong.
    Some things to try:
Try temporarily disabling the use of OpenGL through Edit - Preferences - Performance, or selecting an alternate level (Basic/Normal/Advanced).
Try disabling the "Show Overlay" feature in the Clone Source panel.
Check the web site of the manufacturer of your video card for updated video drivers.

  • Clone Stamp Freakout in CS4-Mac

    Hi,
I am using PhotoShop CS4 on a Mac Pro (2x2.8Ghz Quad Core, 4Gb RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT) running 10.5
My CS4 is up to date.
I use a Wacom Intuos3 6x11 tablet with stylus; it is also up to date.
I am retouching a large (1.88GB) PSD file with multiple layers.
Here is my problem: as I attempt to use the clone stamp, PS stalls in a really peculiar way. I'll either be in the act of cloning, or holding spacebar to get the hand to move around the image, and PS stops functioning. No commands work; the mouse is unresponsive. I do get two large boxes at the top of my image: one is a static checkerboard transparency, the other is a checkerboard trasparency that flickers at seizure-inducing rates.
This goes on for about 20 minutes, after which I am able to work normally (and save, save, save) for about five minutes.
It also seems to be exacerbated if I zoom in closer than 100%.
I have not had this problem on larger files, so I'm not convinced this is a memory issue. It is going to become a "smash my Mac with my tablet" issue.
I have turned off all other programs, including Spaces.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

Did you update to Photoshop 11.0.1?
If you already did, then it sounds like you're having a display driver problem or a GPU failure.
You may want to get the machine checked, and in the meantime you can turn off GPU drawing in preferences.

  • Photoshop CS4 Clone Stamp Tool behavior

I installed CS4 on a Dual Pentium Xeon 2.4ghz Compaq W8000 system with 3GB of RD 800mhz RAM and Windows XP Pro w/SP3 and all updates. The video card is a ATI Radion AGP-3855 w/512 GDDR3 RAM with latest drivers.
When using the clone stamp tool, after making a sourse selection there is a "trail" that follows the cursor to the destination (similar to using a mouse trail so you can tell where the cursor is on a notebook computer)
When the cursor slows down at the stamp destination the "trail" catches up and covers the destination with the sourse "patch" not allowing precise targeting. It is so cumbersome to use as to make the clone stamp tool almost unusable. The density of the "patch" is not affected by opacity settings.
Is this a new behaviour for this tool in CS4? And if so can it be turned off? Do I have a problem unique to my system?
    Murray

    Hi Anthony,
Good point and thanks for suggesting the clone source features. I can see that it has tremendous potential and will revisit it to see if it will benifit my work. My immediate problem was that overlay was on as a default and it was not obvious to me where to address it.
I have not used this forum before as I have a couple of gurus I lean on, but was really impressed by the immediate help I recieved here.
I am a wildlife-mammal-stock shooter and I have been using Quick Mask, with a feathered brush to make small to medium selections on a, sometimes, flipped version of the image I am working on, or from another one. Moving the selection to a separate transparent (background) layer and then bringing it into my image as a separate layer and aligning it by setting the opacity at 50% and then using rotation, opacity and layer masking to finish the work.I then use the clone stamp at a low (20-50%) opacity to do additional "painting" and to blend the QM object. This approach is cumbersome, but highly effective, however I may be able to use "your" clone source options for simpler or different tasks.
    Thanks,
    Murray

  • Photshop CS4 clone stamp error

I have Photshop CS4.  When I try to use the clone stamp tool I receive an error message.  How can I resolve this issue?

    Hi Hillcoat,
I'd try resetting the photoshop preferences and see if that works:

  • Photoshop CS4-clone stamp tool

    Hello
I want to erase the watermark and x mark from a istock image for comping purposes. What is the easiest/fastest way to do this? Clone Stamp/patch tool? If stamp tool, how do you get the tool to delete the x line in a straight line. Mine always copys pixels next to it.
    Thanks in advance.

I want to erase the watermark and x mark from a istock image for comping purposes. What is the easiest/fastest way to do this?
Ahem, you buy the stock photo/ artwork? Seriously - if it's just for a mock-up/ design template, than neither you nor your clients will/ should mind the watermarks and as per most such sites' regulations, it is required to be left in place and a mention of the original source to be provided in the copyright. Everything else is just an ill-conceived attempt to bypass their terms and regulations...

  • Eraser and Clone Stamp issues

Here is are a couple of VERY odd anomalies I have come across.
PS CS4 v. 11.0 on Win XP Pro SP 3 loaded on Dell Optiplex 755...
When using the eraser tool, it will work if the mode is set to "block" but if mode is set to "brush" or "pencil" it will not work.
Also, clone stamp doesn't work at all. I have tried myriad mode settings, brush settings sample settings. After alt/clicking to obtain the sample, I move the tool over the area I wish to "replace" with the cloned selection. Before I click, I can see a small sample of the cloned area where the bush is positioned. However, once I click it goes away and nothing happens! It is recorded as a step in the history panel, but no changes are made to the image.
I must admit that I am stumped. Thanks in advance for anyone's insight.

    Susan,
Have you checked for an updated driver from Wacom? Around the release of new versions of PS, they usually have some new ones, that better utilize the features (the REAL ones) in PS.
Also, you should have complete access to your Wacom controls (Control Panel>Wacom) and I'd check to see that nothing has been changed, or reconfigured.
I do not have CS4, but there also might be tablet controls in Preferences?
Last, though you have checked your Brush settings, you might want to look at everything there very closely. I had a similar sounding issue when one aspect of Brush Dynamics was reset. Unfortunately, that was so very long ago, and I do not recall the exact setting that messed things up.
    Good luck,

  • Photoshop cs3 clone stamp tool - clipping option?

In CS4 there is an option to 'clip' the clone stamp so that it shows an overlay of your cloned area 'clipped to' the brush size. (If you uncheck the 'clipped' option it overlays the whole image and does not limit the overlay to your brush area)
Is this feature available in cs3? On a friends computer, we have found the 'show overlay' option which shows the whole image overlayed, but there is no obviouse one for the clipped option.
If it does exist, where is it?!
    Thanks

If I understand you correctly, you may have a system problem (e.g., with OpenGL) if the clone stamp overlay is not confined to the brush shape.
Normally, this is what you see (cloning from the right to the left with a round brush):
If it's not working this way for you, I suggest downloading and installing the latest display driver from the web site of the maker of your video card, and also experimenting with the OpenGL settings in your Edit - Preferences - Performance menu.
CS3 did not offer the clipped Clone Stamp overlay. That's an OpenGL-specific feature, and only Photoshop CS4 and above have the OpenGL support needed.

  • Clone Stamp does not work

I have photoshop CS4, and whenever I try to sample an area to clone, then clone the area to the place I want, the entire image moves around, and I can't clone anything. When I am moving the image, there seems to be another same exact picture underneath, but when I check the layer panel, I only have one background layer. What is going on with my clone stamp, I never had this problem before. Help, I need to pass my assignments in.

    Hi,
You are currently in the wrong forum. You should be either in the Photoshop Windows or Photoshop Mac forums.
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop
That having been said. I think you might have "Show Overlay" checked in your clone stamp panel. I have CS3 so don't know how different the setting may be in CS4. If "show Overlay" isn't checked in the clone stamp palette, you could try a reset of the clone stamp tool. (Right click the stamp tool icon's little drop down arrow in the Options bar (not the tool box), and select reset tool. If that doesn't work, the next step would be to reset Photoshop preferences.

  • Clone Stamp and Healin Brush not Working

I am also having problems with this healing brush and clone stamp tool
I am running Windows 7 (64 bit on a powerful computer with 6 Gb Ram and pleanty of HDD space.)
I am using a wired mouse and do not have a tablet connected.
I have duplicated the Background as a backgound copy ab\nd mad the backgound invisible ther backgound copy layer is selected and is made visible.
Clicking on the either tool, I move the cursor to the source area I wish to clone from and [Alt]-Click. I then try to love the cursor to the destination area, the part I want to cover up with material from the source area.
What happens is the entire image moves showing as I move the mouse, revealing an other image below that does not move.
Either I do not understand what these tools are supposed to do, (I doubt that because I have used this tool several times in PSE 6 without problems.) or there is something terribly wrong with the program.
I underststand, fronm reading the forums that the same problem exists in CS4.
I have checked for updates but the only update that I have not downloaded and installed is support for Raw files from newer cameras.
PS The files I am working on are originally JPGs and have not been converted from any other file type.
Below is a screen shot illustrating the offset image.
Thanks for any help you may offer.
BTW Does Adobe support this program? I can only find help this kind of help in the forums.

    Hi,
This looks like you have the overlay feature turned on for the tool. When you select the clone or healing brush, look up in the options bar and select the icon for more options. Uncheck the box that says "Overlay".  I am not sure if each one is independently set in Elements or if a check mark turning on or off overlay effects both tools as it does with Photoshop.
I don't have a copy of Elements that includes this feature but on the option bar the icon that you need to click is located below where it says "sign in" in the editor...to the right of where it says "all layers"---square icon.
Edit: See Post #1 in which Barbara has a screen shot showing where to look in Elements to turn on/off the screen overlay feature.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/738288
Edit: I see while I was increasing my neighbor's herd of cows...MTSTUNER has posted another screenshot of the options panel. I'll leave this up anyway just in case you also have CS4.
This is a screen shot of The clone source palette settings that control the overlay in Photoshop CS3.  I'll include this screenshot of where to look in Photoshop just in case you also have CS4 since you mentioned looking through the Photoshop forum for the answer.  In Photoshop, this feature can be turned on/off in the clone source palette. The check mark will effect both clone stamp and healing brush...they share the current setting.
I actually forgot that this feature also effected the healing brush as well as the clone stamp. Want to guess how I keep mine set? LOL.
To be fair, I guess looking at this image I could see with a low opacity setting how it could be useful if I wanted to increase this herd of cows.

  • Clone Stamp Tool does not work

This is a re-post of an old problem. Using PS CS4 Extended v. 11.0.2 in Win XP SP3.
The clone stamp tool does not alter my image. After selecting source region, cursor hovers over the target region and the preview looks like what one would expect. After clicking, however, the desired change does not occur.
Uninstalled PS and reinstalled. Clone stamp worked for a while, then quit working again.
Image seems to be OK, in that I can open it on my Laptop with CS3 on Win Vista, do my cloning, save and all works fine.
Any ideas appreciated. I may uninstall and reinstall again, but if I do, would like some ideas of what I should monitor as I go through my work process.

    Jack wrote:
The second method worked. Many thanks.
To avoid this happening again, would appreciate any idea on what to look for in my Preferences.
    Glad it fixed it.
When the preferences get corrupted it is not due to a wrong setting. One of the files has been damagrd. This is a known problem with computers not just Photoshop.
It can be caused by incorrect shut-downs, hard drive faults, or a dozen other reasons. Deleting the preferences just lets Photoshop generate a fresh set at factory default.
Make sure you check through to get your personal settings back and then save a copy.

  • Healing brush/clone stamp cursor is dark.

I hope I've overlooked something very simple.  In CS3 on my PC, the circular cursor for healing brush and clone stamp (probably others, too) is always a contrasting color to the underlying image so the circle is always very visible.  With the same preferences set, CS4 always has a very dark, perhaps black circular cursor, so that in dark areas, it completely disappears, making it difficult to select the correct area.
Just me, my PC or CS4?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the answer.
I have not mentioned the GPU because the processes I described (as far as I know) are not supposed to be using GPU resources. So far I have not been able to afford the GPU i want which is GTX770, so I use Intel 4600 built in graphics instead. To be honest I find, that 4600 graphics is quite powerful. I am able to play Mass Effect 3 on Full spec on max res without game slowing down. And Windows 7 64bit index score is 7.8 for the 4600 graphics. Overall index score is 7.8 on my PC righ now.
I'll try to get the Photoshop system info as soon as possible.
    Thanks again.

  • Clone Stamp Tool Freezes

The clone stamp tool causes After Effects to freeze.  This wasn't happening before I ugraged to CS5.  After a few strokes, the program just freezes out of nowhere.  I am working with HD, ProRes 422 files, on a Mac 2.4 dual core laptop.  4G Ram.  But as I said, I had no problem prior to upgrading to CS5, and I had worked with the stamp tool many times with the same type of files, on the same computer.  There's another post for the same problem, however that person was working in CS4, and it doesn't look like a solution was found.  Does anyone know why this is happening and what the solution is?  Thanks.

Have you installed the 10.0.1 update?
