Is 11inch MacBook Air Too Small?

Hi,
I'm totally stuck on which MacBook to upgrade to. I currently have a late 2009 white polycarbonate MacBook. I use it with a 27inch external HD display. My first question is - is it worth an upgrade? My main uses are schoolwork, email, web surfing, the odd movie and the very odd intensive task. Should I upgrade my Mac now or wait another year or two? If I was to upgrade I am looking at an 11inch MacBook Air. 2nd question is - is it too small. I bring my MacBook around alot and would even more if I had the Air but is it too small for what I want to do? I know I have the external display but what when I'm not using it?
Sorry to be such a vague question,
Any help appreciated,
Mg

Ive owned both 11" and 13" Air, i wouldnt go back to the 11", but thats subjective
The 13" has a lot more battery and therefore more power for longer hours
also the 13" has a SD card slot, and of course larger viewing area (obviously).
The weight diff. to me was next to nothing between the two.

Yes, you can run LPX on your Macbook Air

  • Is the MacBook Air 11" small?

I have a mini laptop (HP 210 Mini Laptop) and im thinking of buying a new mac (that i will use it for college) beacuse its becoming too slow and the screen is small. Should I buy the 11" MacBook Air? Does the screen has obvious differences with the MacBook 13"?

I encourage you to visit the Apple store and compare the two.  The 11" was too small for me but me eyes are not as young as yours.
I've been carrying the 13" models around North America since 2008 and find them to be very mobile and a good screensize.

  • Time Machine backup created on Mac with a large hard disk. What happens when restore to MacBook Air with small SSD drive?

What if a Time Machine backup was created on a Mac with a large hard disk, e.g. 500GB iMac - and I buy a new MacBook Air with a small SSD hard disk e.g 128GB. What happens when I need to use the larger Time Machine file to set up the new MacBook Air? What happens to all those files that can't fit on the smaller SSD drive?

It is not the HD size, but rather the size of the data it contains. If you right-click your 500GB drive and select "Get Info" you can see how much is actually being used.
Naturally if you are using more space than the new drive has, then you have to make some choices about what you want to keep and what you want to keep archived.
I don't know what options are available but you may simply have to do a manual restore of files you want, in groups.

  • Resolution Problems after Leopard Install....MacBook screen too small?!

Everything from Safari, Firefox, iTunes, Pages have been affected. After installing Leopard it seems that my Macbook's 13 inch screen is too small instead of it automatically formatting the information. Even my Dashboard after installing Leopard had to be cleaned up because the previous Widgets were covering the entire screen. I'm including a link to a picture of "Creating a new Pages document from the Template chooser" to show you what I mean. Do I really have to reinstall Leopard to fix this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe the default settings for labels and text in Finder windows, if that's what you mean, is 12 point. You you can change font size through View Options. Text sizes for menus, etc. is fixed; I don't know what the size is specifically. For Firefox, text size for web pages is specified by the web site generally, but you can change the size Firefox will default to in the Firefox Content preferences.
I hope I've answered the question you were asking. Regards.

  • Is the 11 inch macbook air to small for a laptop?

i saw the lap top 11 inch today at fries and the macbook air 11 inch looks to small

I just got the macbook air 11" and personally, I think it is actually a great size. It seems small at first, but once you get used to it, the screen size seems normal. I have to do research and write papers/essays all the time, and personally the 11" can hold up perfectly. The battery lasts me all day, and I use it for almost every class. I find that I am quite impressed with it. I had the first generation Macbook Pro (2006), and then I had the macbook, and I liked them, but thier fans were loud when they turned on, and they would become a very high temperature after awhile. But, with the macbook air, I have found that the fan is not loud and it doesn't get to a very high temperature. As a student, I find that it is a fantastic, reliable, and has all of the same uses that a macbook pro has. I know several people who have the new macbook pro, and comparing the two, the macbook pro is just bigger and has more memory/hard drive than the macbook air, but other than that there really is no difference except the weight and size. As a student, I would definately reccomend it.
My friend has an iPad and she said that she uses it for games and basic stuff, but becuase it doesnt have Microsoft Word/Excel/Power Point, ect. she doesn't use it for studying, taking notes, and doing homework. Also, becuase the keyboard on the iPad is not a standard size, it is very difficult to type on. I believe it is more of a toy and less of a resource/tool you would use for work/school.

  • I bought Aperture and have it installed on my Macbook. I now also have a Macbook AIR, which I use regularly. Can I also install Aperture on my MacBook AIR, too, without paying for it again?

Can Aperture be installed on my 2 Macs ( Pro and AIR) ?

hi Leonie, I've downloaded it from AppStore, unfortunately.
If it is the Mac App Store, then Carolyn Samit's solution is perfect. Sign into the App Store on your MacBook Air with the original AppleID you used and install Aperture from the Purchased page.
But If you bought a serial number and downloaded from the Apple Store, then you cannot download an installer from Apple's sites. In that case your best bet would be to update your current version to Aperture 3.5.1 if you are still using an older version.  Updating to 3.5.1 will change your license to a Mac AppStore license, and you can download from the AppStore on your other Mac.
Which Aperture version do you have installed? Are you already using Aperture 3.5.1 on MacOS X 10.9.3?

  • How do you watch an iMovie with this 11inch macbook air?!!?

I have a research project for class and I made a short documentary on imovie... Now I know I can view it on my mac but how can i make dvds? or let alone present it to my class (i.e. dvd) my school does not use macs, so asking IT was useless. Basically my question is, how do you watch a movie created on imovie to a windows based computer??????..... it says the file is .m4v, i am not too sure if that helps. I know there are various cables out there, but college has enough hold on my money, something free would be awesome! I really would like to make a dvd, but i will settle for whatever now...

You can play it using quicktime on a Windows computer - just be sure its installed and you're good to go.

  • SD card options for 11inch MacBook Air?

The 11 inch doesn't have an on-board SD Card reader, unless I misread the literature, so what's the best way to transfer the data from SD cards?
    An SD card reader?
Is there a "Best option for the Mac" or should I simply search Amazon?
    Thanks

there are 3 types of SD cards: normal (SD), fast (SDHC) and blazing fast (SDXC). The better the performance, the more readers and cards cost
Most macs come with SDXC card reader.
the SDXC reader can read SD, SDHC and SDXC cards, but they cost more
the SDHC reader can read SD and SDHC but not SDXC.
the SD reader can only read SD. they're the cheapest.
If you're going to buy high performance cards (SDHC or SDXC), you don't want to buy SD readers, as they'll be incompatible.
    Hope this answers.
P.S. (the onboard SDXC reader isn't going to be much faster than a good quality SDXC reader, since  even SDXC is slower than USB 3.0 technology)

  • Macbook pro 15-inch 2011 vs. MacBook Air 13-inch 2013

Hello. I currently own a MacBook Pro 15-inch, early 2011 model. It has 8 GB of RAM, a quad-core, 2.3 GHz i7 processor, hi-res, anti-glare display, an AMD 6750m and Intel HD 3000. I bought it off of an Apple product store on Ebay about 3 and a half months ago. It was 1,350$. It was in perfect condition when I bought it, and it still is. I'm really into producing music, and I use Reason 6.5. I also do some other small things on my laptop, like word-processing, web-browsing and I bring it to school everyday. I was wandering if I should sell this laptop on Ebay, and buy a brand-new Macbook Air, 13-inch, 2013 model. The laptop is a little thick and heavy, and its battery-life is nothing compared to the MacBook Air. I really value battery-life I would probably upgrade the RAM to 8 gigs, and maybe upgrade the processor to 1.7 GHz, maybe upgrade the SSD to 256, but I might not. I was wandering if this would be a good idea. How much would I be able to sell this laptop for on Ebay? Is the MacBook Air weaker or stronger than the laptop I am using now? Screen real estate is something that matters a lot when using a music program, which is why I initially went for this laptop. Now, since the MacBook Air is smaller, I know that it displays just as much as this laptop does, so I don't think that the screen size would be that big of a problem. I am thinking about saving up for a 27-inch iMac, which would then be my primary machine, but if I were able to buy one, it wouldn't be for awhile. Anyways, Thanks to anybody who can help me!

    Nice to see you again.
The macbook Air is 'stronger' than the Pro only in terms of containing MUCH fewer parts, far less to fault, easier to repair
both have unibody aluminum alloy frames.

Its stronger in alloy form factor, slim design with only ONE moving part, no HD to crash from mechanical failure of impact etc.
Ive got an Imac and current Air, and owned several Air, the air is the hands down choice for myself and I wouldnt part with it for any amount of money.  Also own a couple macbook Pro, new and older one i rebuilt.
Here is an excellent video comparison between the 11” I5 vs. I7 2013 Macbook Air.

    I5 vs. I7 performance 13” Macbook Air 2013
    Boot performance
    11.7 I5 ……11.4 I7
      Cinebench
    1.1 I5….1.41 I7
    IMovie Import and Opt.
    6.69 I5….5.35 I7

    25.8 I5….31.8 I7
    Adobe Photoshop CS5 Performance
    27.3 I5…22.6 I7
    Macbook Air:
Only one moving part, ultrafast boot time SSD, the full power of laptop with the weight of an Ipad (close).
Air is the only Mac that has Haswell, 802ac wifi, and incredible 12hr. batt life in 13" I5. HOWEVER NOW the new Pro have 802ac wifi
Recommend buying the Air with 8gig Ram.
Pack around a regular laptop around about 20 days, then an Air, .....after that the standard laptops stays at home.
Only one moving part, the fan. No moving HD heads to crash or moving platters.  Runs a LOT cooler than anything else out there (which = durability).  Heater is a killer on a scale of 10X over that of accidents.
Also the AIR has far fewer parts to fail inside than a standard laptop.  Really only a few replacement parts
The speakers on the Air, contrary to what most people would assume, are much louder than on the macbook Pro.
The Air in general is faster due to the SSD, also if you have a 802ac Router (i.e. Airport Extreme) then the Air over wifi is a LOT faster.
If youre going to be dragging a notebook around campus all the time, the Air makes things a lot more lovely.
The FINAL consideration of course is your application USE, and needs regarding same (see specs and video above)
The new Air, NOW with Mavericks is just 'king of the hill'. Nothing touches it

  • More ram or higher CPU MacBook Air 2013

Hi everyone, looking to purchase the 11inch MacBook Air... Would you go with the 8gb of ram or the 1.7 CPU....I can only afford one, no...no plans on saving to buy both if that's your advice *\(^o^)/* thank you all for the opinions and help. God bless.
    Jason

Thank you!  That's along the lines of what I was thinking but I am unfamiliar with this new CPU so the question did crop up. It's just going to be used for school and watching video.

  • Imovie 11 runs ok in macbook air 11" 2012?

I want to buy a macbook air 11 "2012. Need to know if you can edit video with iMovie 11 without problems. Want not regret after buying it.
I used to edit videos of about 15 or 20 minutes with transitions and music.
Use an external hard drive SSD for rendering
It will be enough with the MacBook Air?
    Thank you

I would recommend a MacBook Pro, check the Apple refurbished section for an older refurbisehd model that can outperform the MacBook Air. Small screen on the MBA will not make for a comfortable editing experience. Also I don't believe iMovie can use external scratch disks to render.

  • PPro Crashes on Macbook Air

I am using Premiere Pro on a powerful desktop computer, and well as my Macbook Pro. No problems.
A co-worker just installed PPro on his new Macbook Air, and, during the metalogging process, it is frequently crashing. (The project contains over 100 video clips.)
Is his Macbook Air too girlie for PPro? Or could it be something else?

  • My Macbook Pro was stolen, and I have replaced it with a Macbook Air. New hard drive is too small for a Time Machine restore. How do I restore my more-expensive apps (ie iWorks) on my new Macbook without repurchasing them?

My Macbook Pro was recently stolen, and I have replaced it with a Macbook Air. I attempted to simply do a restore from the Macbook Pro's Time Machine backup, but since the new Macbook Air's hard drive is significantly smaller, a Time Machine restore was not possible. I even tried to choose only settings or only my User Profile (option) when restoring, but the backup was still too large to do a restore onto the new machine. How do I restore my more-expensive apps (ie iWorks) onto my new Macbook without repurchasing them? Also, I reaad somewhere that if you went to the Mac App Store and attempted to repurchase the app and clicked BUY, it would simply alert you that you have already purchased the app (and trigger a re-download)... NOT THE CASE... So I just dropped another $19.99 for a second copy of Pages... Not my intention....
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you should get a usb backup drive as well.  time machine has limited use in my eyes. it saves things. but older things can be errased ad space drops without telling you
nothing beats data redundancy.  2 saves is. 1.    and 1 is none
im personally not fond of time machne though i use it only for a recovery parameter for a mac
id never ever myself consider time machine a genuine data backup tool.  though most do consider it as such
drive clones such as superduper and carbon copy cloner can clone your entire drive for emergency recovery.  and you can boot from them as well o. another mac
