Is 12mpbs a decent download speed for Apple TV?

Hi,
I just did a speed test at home and I have 12mpbs, was just wondering if this is a decent speed for using my apple TV (wifi), cause my movies are taking a long time to download. I'm holding on customer support with apple as well, but thought someone out there might be able to help.
Thanks

I would also add that unless you have verified it yourself, the speed your ISP quotes/sustains may be optimistic - use something like speedtest.net to check.
That said I have used AppleTV since the first version and have always had below par internet speeds - at worst it means you may have to wait for iTunes rentals made on the device or cloud playback of prior purchases to buffer (mins to hours admittedly), but adaptive streamin eg Netflix should work well at lower speeds as will Home Sharing from iTunes on the LAN.

Do you ever visit a friend or realtive with a Mac who has faster internet? Maybe the local library has Macs on a fast line. If so, get a USB thumb drive and put this link on it from your computer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Then put this link on the drive:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1429
When you are at some place that has a Mac with a decent download speed. insert the thumb drive in that Mac and click on the first link ("DL1399") and direct the download to your thumb drive. Now do the same this with the second link.
The installer files will now be on the thumb drive and, when you get home, drag them from the thumb drive to your desktop. Install the Combo update first.

  • What has happened to download speed for any video....tv, movies

Since about 2 days ago, the download speed for purchased video has become ridiculous. A 30 minute tv show takes MORE than 30 minutes to download......it used to take about 3 minutes...or less. I rented TRON yesterday and it took over 3 hours to download......it used to take 10-15 minutes. This happens on both my 2 Macs and 1 Windows machines. My Internet connections report a solid 20MB down and 1.5 up.....on every machine and device I have. It is NOT a problem in my home system or machines. All other downloads are fine.
Something is seriously wrong with Apple's iTunes websites. I am certain that there is nothing wrong locally......no machines have changed.....and they all experience this abysmally slow service.
Netflix streams full HD fine on all machines, by the way. I wouldn't even begin to download an HD movie from iTunes until someone at Apple figures out why their service suddenly is not useable.

My box has similar issues with Multiplex D (which Film 4 and 4 Music are on).  My TV is absolutely fine but my Vision box is less happy.  I have the channels listed but no picture.  I keep meaning to replace my aerial leads but haven't got round to it.  Strange thing though is that my aerial goes to my vision box which then goes to my TV so it makes no sense as I would expect the reception to be the same or worse on the TV as with the Vison box.

  • TS1717 The download speed for movies is terribly slow.  It took hours to download.  Any suggestions?

Any suggestions for improving download speeds on movies. It took hours to download my first purchase.  I've used Amazon and Netflix for renting movies and had reasonable download speeds.

    Hi Travelling fool 101,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like you were able to update the iPad but were eventually able to. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
Resolve issues with an over-the-air iOS update - Apple Support
Download takes a long time, or you can't reach update server
iOS updates require a persistent Internet connection, and the time it takes to download the update will vary according to the size of the update and your Internet speed. You can use your device normally while downloading the iOS update, and iOS will notify you when you can install the update. To improve the speed of the download, avoid downloading other content.

  • Download speed for iTunes only 26KB

Hi everbody, I try to download iTunes with 26KB download speed. Is this a temporarally issue? My cable has a bandwidth as of 50.000 Mbit/ download.
Thanks for quick help and answer.
    Heiko

Your download speeds are almost entirely dependent upon your ISP. As far as I am aware, Apple does not throttle your download speeds.

  • Why is the download speed for Creative Cloud updates and initial software installation so slow?

Why is the download process for Adobe Creative Cloud updates and initial installations so slow? I can download and update other software from other providers almost an order of magnitude faster. This slow download problem has been present since I started using Creative Cloud soon after it was initially offered.
Adobe customer support maintains that there is no throttling at Adobe's end, and that no one has complained about this problem -- this forum shows the latter not to be true.
    What is the problem?

    Hi ErstwhileCreative,
I don't think I've ever checked the download speed but the installers are definitely large files, many several GB. It might seem longer because the download immediately progresses into the installation at 50%

  • Download speed for videos and high quality videos

Hi everyone...!!! I've just ran the speedtest app on both my I pad and I pod touch and the results are the same. Download is 1.72 Mbps and upload is 0.57 Mbps. I'm guessing that this is pretty poor and is the reason a HD video on you tube takes ages to load and freezes after the film is started?? Work pays for my broadband but I would gladly pay for my own if that would enable me to get a faster connection and better downloading speeds??? Is this the case??? Thanks in advance for any guidance on this matter.......cheers. Scott.

I presume u r on 3g at those figures. My ADSL on iPad is 12 mps down and around 0.8 up BUT like others here streaming is still slow, as is browsing. I have tried everything here and I do mean everything. It's been 6 weeks now since 4.2.1 was 'let loose' and personally I've had enough. My analogy is I bought a 'car' to commute on a highway at 110kph and after its first service it now does 40kph and the service dpt wont return my calls for help. I have tried servicing it my self, changed oil, rotated tyres etc all of which were vain attempts, heck I've even BLAMED THE BOWSER the fuel comes out of.
Well if my iPad was a car I know what I would be doing. Take it back and have it replaced???? not when I know the same model has the same issue. If it were a car I would be saying "mate I'll walk to work till the new model comes out". I know this is a rant but I have had enough. I will include my latest service attempt tip and perhaps this post wont be deleted.
The following tip helped somewhat .... I am now up to 48kph.
Set router to Wireless G only.
Set Router to WPA2 only. (make sure you dont have any old devices) (WPA2 is the most secure, and uses AES encyrption which has no overhead or slow down on your data)
Set router to Manual channel selection, then pick channel 6, I actually found 3 slightly better, see if it helps, if not go back and select channel 11, if not then put it back on automatic. Go to router toolbox and then turn off Extended security which is found in UpNp settings
Also try turning browsing interception off (its normally in the configuration page).
    cheers

  • Awful download speeds for files through skype

This has been going on for about 2 days now and it's getting more and more frustrating. I have used skype for years with no issues and NOW all of a sudden, i have issues. My problem is that i cannot download any file a friend sends me, but i am able to send them files just fine.
A 28MB file from a friends takes 18~ hours to download, my internet speeds are fine. 100 up 50 down so this doesnt make any sense to me. Not only does this happen to me on my desktop, it happens to me on my phone as well.
What can i do to fix this? I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, firewall on/off. Restarted my route rmultiple times. Only skype is getting this issue, i can download any file from anywhere just fine. So is it me? or Skype?

I've had the same issue with Oracle-hosted downloads lately. I've also heard stories from others in my office that they've been having similar problems for many months now.
The story is always the same: download speed starts out great, then tapers off to a few kB/second. Eventually, the connection is dropped, and the user is left with an incomplete / corrupt download.
Some have suggested that it's network related, as they have problems downloading from the office (which has multiple T1's), but no issues downloading the same file from home (basic home broadband setups).
If you're willing to be patient, a good download manager program (preferably one with resumable download support) can help you trudge through the problem. I ended up using Free Download Manager (http://www.freedownloadmanager.org) and letting my downloads run over a weekend, but there are many alternatives out there as well (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_download_managers).

  • Slow Download Speed for VHD file

Hello, I've looked for the answer to this problem on multiple different sites, but to no avail.
I'm trying to download a 29.2 GB VHD file that crashed up in the cloud so that I can attempt to fix it, or recover the files. Unfortunately, I am achieving abysmal download speeds, even though speedtest indicates that it should be much higher. For example,
right now speedtest indicates that I have a 5MBs connection, but my download is capping at about 1 MBs +- 20KBs. Does anyone know the reason for this? Is there anyway to get around this?
    Thanks in advance.

You can achieve up to 30 gigabits/sec of egress for a locally redundant storage account and up to 60 MB/sec or up to 500 requests per second for a single blob (See Azure Storage Scalability and Performance Targets article
    http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/storage-scalability-targets/ for more info).
You can also turn on storage analytics/metrics to find out the total egress that you were able to achieve in Azure Storage (https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn782843.aspx)
to rule out the possibility of hitting the scalability limit.

  • Download speed with Apple TV way too Slow

I have Apple TV and with that I have Netflix.
I am able to watch Netflix but on a TV show that we have purchased the download is 2+ hours.  This is not acceptable.  How can it be fixed.  I have a fast connection to the internet - 30+ Mbps.  So I know that it is not my connection to the internet that is the issue.
What can be changed ??  I have the setting of video at 720 not 1080 as I know that will slow it down.  My wife is not happy and well it does not help with viewing pleasure.
    Please help.
    Thanks
FYI - it is the first gen Black Apple TV

There's a number of possibilities here.
In most cases the wireless transmission in the house is to blame.
You may be on a channel some other access point is using.  You'd need to do a site survey to pick the most open frequency.
Your router may just be tired.  After a while they just wear out and the wireless performance is the first to suffer.  I change them out all the time for people.
You may be using old technology.  802.11B and G are obsolete.  Consider getting a dual band router which would allow you to set the AppleTV on 5GHz (fast, open, seldom in use in the area).  This also means your other stuff in the house can run at top speed without taking bandwidth from the pipe used for the AppleTV (best seen in Airplay, where neither are really using the internet, just the WiFi).
Then there's the possibility that the service itself for Neftlix is busy or your internet provider is choking for one reason or another...

  • How to get 802.11n speed for Apple TV?

I installed my first Apple TV yesterday. Great stuff!
My iTunes movie library is on a Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. I have not yet used the AirPort Extreme 802.11n Enabler on this MacBook, since I just found out it exists. If I use it, can I utilize 802.11n sync speeds with the Apple TV? How?
My AirPort network uses only an "old" 802.11g AirPort Extreme base station, not the "new" AirPort Extreme base station with 802.11n.
I have three 802.11g AirPort Express base stations on my network, mainly for using AirTunes.
My iMac connects to my wireless network using 802.11g, and I don't think the 802.11n Enabler works with it.
My cable modem current connects to my Airport Extreme (802.11g) base station via Ethernet.
I understand I can get a new AirPort Extreme 802.11n base station to replace the 802.11g one, and that would let me use the higher 802.11n speed from the MacBook to the Apple TV. It would also allow (unless I misunderstand) all my 802.11g devices to access the network at the lower speeds they are capable of. Correct?
I also understand there is something called a "dual band network" that involves using both base station types in one large network, but I don't know what the advantage of doing that would be, compared with just replacing the old base station. Can someone fill me in on that?
And, is there any way to get 802.11n speeds from the MacBook Pro to the Apple TV without getting an 802.11n base station?
    Thanks in advance.

If I use it, can I utilize 802.11n sync speeds with the Apple TV? How?
And, is there any way to get 802.11n speeds from the MacBook Pro to the Apple TV without getting an 802.11n base station?
No. Unless you set up an adhoc network between your Mac and the Apple TV.
I understand I can get a new AirPort Extreme 802.11n base > station to replace the 802.11g one, and that would let me > use the higher 802.11n speed from the MacBook to the Apple > TV.
    Yes, it would.
It would also allow (unless I misunderstand) all my 802.11g devices to access the network at the lower speeds they are capable of. Correct?
If you set things up this way, then I believe you wont be able to use wideband mode on the AEBSn. Your AEBSn will be opperating in mixed mode and its 802.11n performance will be degraded. The best set up would be to keep your old router to service the G only devices, and have your new AEBSn service the N capable devices. This would allow you to take full advantage of the performance increase provided by 802.11n capable devices.

  • Slow download speeds for my photo/travel blog downloads- how can I speed up

I am trying to make some modifications to my iweb photo/travel blog site to shorten the time it takes to download, particularly on visitors using pc's. It takes over a minute to download a days post if visitor has ultra fast connection speed and 2 or 3 min. with average DSL speeds. My archive page is the slowest as it has now become the longest page... tho it has no pics and graphics to speak of.
My pics are hi resolution, is that the problem or am i posting too many... usually 10 to 15 per daily post with some text boxes to boot??? on the archive page, can I split it up some how into 2 or 3 pages or by month?? thanks for helping a new mac user. mark.

It's a function of your iPhone's data speed, which is a function of your physical location and your carrier.  Talk to your carrier about increasing your data speed (probalby unlikely) or get dedicated internet to connect your computer to, i.e. cable, fiber, etc.

  • Increase download speed for movies

I'm almost ready to give up on trying to download movies with iTunes.
I have a high speed Internet connection and cannot get any movie to download in less than 20 hours.  Not typo I said hours.  It seems to be a problem only with movies as all music and podcasts download no issue.
A recent movie purchase will not even start to download always says zero KB of 3.77 GB and comes up with an err = 12004 message after 12 or so hours.  I've turned of all firewall and antivirus.  I'm now using my Mac connected direct to router eliminating entire network in my house.
Has anyone else tried iTunes support.  Not sure where they are from or even if they are a person as I got several pages of "help" emailed back to me with a plesant "credit" for some movie rentals (and yes my e-mail did specify it was a movie purchase) along with that was a detailed description on how not to download the movies from an iOs device directly.(and yes I told them I was using my Mac and in later email asked how I could install iOs on my Mac) LOL

    Power cycle router.
    Get a faster Internet connection.

  • Movie clips on iWeb--download speed for viewers...?

    Hi guys--
Spent some time looking for a solution to this one and nothing jumps out at me...movie clips on my sites (30-45 sec) download onto the page REALLY SLOW...should I have 'compressed' the clips somehow before putting them onto my site, or is this just the nature of this animal?
Thanks for your help, as always.

QuickTime Pro can't extract audio from muxed formats (MPEG 1 and 2 or Flash) so you'll need other tools.
MPEG Streamclip (free) can convert your .mpg files into QuickTime formats. I suggest export to DV Stream.
These .dv files can be used in any DV editing software (like iMovie, Final Cut and even QuickTime Pro).
Once in .dv format you can export to other QuickTime formats and reduce the frame rate and data rate and apply some compression to the file.
MPEG-1 is a video playback format. DVD's normally use MPEG-2 and your file dimensions indicate that setting.
If the file is indeed MPEG-1 the software I've mentioned above will come in very handy.
If MPEG-2 you'll need the $20 Apple MPEG-2 playback Component.
