Is 1GB of RAM Enough?

I was planning on buying a MacBook with the SuperDrive and a 2.0GHz. Is 1GB of RAM enough to run photoshop, dreamweaver, and flash, beacuse if I only get 1G of RAM then I can upgrade the hard drive to 100GB. I plan on using Boot Camp also.
This will be my first mac.
  Windows XP   Slow Celeron

But don't forget that the MacBook has integrated graphics, which siphons off of the main ram instead of providing its own.
I have 1GB, and my MacBook usually only has a couple of MB free, even when only running basic applications. You should also monitor your page ins/outs in Activity Monitor. If the number of outs rises at a rate that you find uncomfortable, you should probably upgrade.
Crucial has great, and usually cheap, ram, but right now their 2GB MacBook kit is priced at a ridiculous $417 (http://tinyurl.com/ymbyq7). I just bought a 2GB kit from Other World Computing (http://tinyurl.com/mo5bz), and I'm waiting for it to come in the mail.

  • New Intel Mac mini: Is 1G Ram Enough?

    Hello everyone.
I intend to get my dad and my sis (upgrade from her old iMac G3) each a new Intel Mac mini Core Solo.
I understand that the new Intel Mac mini shares the ram memory between the processor and the "in-built" graphics... also understand from an Apple KB docu that it is best to pair the same ram to maximise efficiency or something...
My dad will be mainly in iPhoto, organising his digital photos, burning CDs and touching up a bit here and there; And both of them will be using mainly to surf, email, chat, maybe a bit of word processing etc - I would say "light to moderate work"
So is 1Gb of Ram enough for the processor and the graphics? I would probably try to max out as big a hard disk for them... and a 19" monitor...
    Thanks and cheers

If he can afford it, I would recommend putting 2-1G modules in there. OS X loves RAM and will call for even more running apps under Rosetta.

    Hi Tommy,
Using install discs created for another computer is the problem. I suggest you get a stand alone install disc for Leopard and give that a try. I know it's a bummer since you have a perfectly good install disc but you can't take an install disc from a new computer and use it to update an older computer. As a matter of fact you would have problems using your install disc on the same type of computer if it didn't have the same build number. In the old days of Power Macs that wasn't an issue. You could take an install disc for one computer and update every Mac you owned. Sorry.

  • 1GB of RAM on Logic...

Is a 2.0 MacBook w/ 1Gb of ram good enough to run logic express 7?

I would say it is. The more RAM you have the more simultaneous audio channels you can have, but 1GB should be adequate for most. I've got 2GB and when I run several channels of audio, plugs/etc., I still have plenty of free memory. YMMV though.

  • HT201364 I have most of the requirements for mavericks, however, can I still upgrade to mavericks with 1GB of ram??

I was wondering If I can upgrade to Mavericks if I have MOST of the requirements available..... The only thing I need to do is upgrade the ram. I currently have 1GB of Ram
Or MUST I upgrade the ram???????

And check the Mavericks requirements again. A MacBook that shipped with only 1 Gig of RAM is probably too old for use with Mavericks. As I believe that all of the qualifying MacBooks shipped with a minimum of 2 Gigs RAM.
The minimum requirement for the MocBook is:
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
Note: It always helps to mention your exact Mac model when posting a question in the forums.

  • Is it ok to use 1GB + 256MB RAM in Satellite P25-s607

I have a Satellite P25-s607, and I wanted to know the following:
    1) if it's ok to install only a single 1GB stick of RAM next to a 256MB stick? Will I lose any performance speed doing this versus 2 1GB sticks (assuming I use under 1GB of RAM at most times)? Sounds like it will not have a performance hit since this model doesn't support dual-channel memory (according to crucial.com)
    2) I assume this is the correct (best) module to use: [1GB, 200-pin SODIMM, DDR PC2700|http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=3B53A794A5CA7304] with specs:
    # Module Size: 1GB
    # Package: 200-pin SODIMM
    # Feature: DDR PC2700
    # Specs: DDR PC2700 CL=2.5 Unbuffered NON-ECC DDR333 2.5V 128Meg x 64
    3) Is there any reason to install BIOS 2.10? It is listed under the toshiba support site under P25-S607-related, but the only change it states is: "Added support for the Pentium 4 D1 stepping CPU"
    4) Is it possible to install a better CPU? I assume not...
    5) What about graphics card (it came with NVIDIA® GeForce? FX Go5200 graphics controller; 64MB DDR external video memory)? Also I assume not...
    Thanks for any help!!

    Hi
    Regarding the question number:
    1) The notebook can be upgraded up to 2GB RAM and therefore you can use one 1GB RAM and one 256MB module. But its always better if you would use the identical memory modules. Its better for performance but I doubt you will notice an performance boost.
    2) Yes, you have to use the 200-pin SODIMM, DDR PC2700 modules
    3) If your notebook runs trouble free then I dont see any reasons for a BIOS update
    4) Usually its not advisable to upgrade the CPU due to a higher heat dissipation and overheating risks due to a higher CPU performance
    5) No, this is definitely not possible because the GPU is fixed on the board

  • Is 2 gig of ram enough for a 2011 2,3 ghz mac mini for doing some games? Like GTA IV

Is the standard 2GB of ram enough for a 2011 2,3GHz Mac Mini for doing games? Like GTA IV.
Or do I even have to go for the faster 2,5GHz model?

I have a MacMini Late 2011 with 2.3 GHz I5 and 4GB RAM and I use it as media center... It's enough to play FullHD movies but it uses 256 on 512 MB of (shared)RAM... I don't think that you can use a mini for hard gaming...
But AngryBirds Space on a 60" FullHD TV looks great
    edit:
welcome to discussions... i'm a newbie too

  • I have a Mac OSX Version 10.5.8 When I put in my disc to upgrade to snow leopard version 10.6.3 it tells me I need atleast 1gb of ram memory to download. what can I do

I have a Mac OSX Version 10.5.8 When I put in my disc to upgrade to snow leopard version 10.6.3 it tells me I need atleast 1gb of ram memory to download. what can I do

Your iMac can take a total of 2 GBs of RAM Max.
    Maximum Memory
    2.0 GB
    Memory Slots
    2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
You will be able to install OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and it will run, but you may not be happy with the performance overall.
OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and later OS X versions use more and more CPU, GPU and RAM resources.
OS X 10.6, by itself, will use between 2-4 GBs of RAM to run quickly, smoothly and efficiently.
Start running additonal applications and your iMac is going to struggle.
Just fair warning if you notice that your iMac is running slower after installing OS X 10.6.
    Good Luck!

  • 1GB of RAM???

It will not let me install aperture and its reason is because I do not have 1GB of RAM. However I do or I should cause my computer is new how can I check it if I do have 1GB of RAM and if I do then how can I install aperture

Please fully describe your computer so we can properly respond: model, RAM, graphics card. Aperture needs more than 1 GB of RAM, ideally more than 2 GB of RAM and has other needs as well.

  • Poor OEL5-3 performance when using over 1Gb of RAM

Hi, I have a Linux distribution ( Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3 i.e. Redhat ) that I have installed. It works fine when I used 2*512Mb dimms or replace them with a single 1Gb dimm. However when I try to go above 1 Gb the bootup and general performance deteriorates badly. The BIOS picks up the memory changes ok and I am using the same type of memory sticks. It makes no difference if I load a single memory channel with the 2 sticks or balance the sticks over the 2 channels - I still get poor performance. When I return to 1Gb of RAM performance is great
In terms of install I just followed the Oracle Release note and Readme on the DVD itself. To be honest they are incredibly basic. There does not appear to be any specific OEL 5-3 installation manual on Technet. I simply followed the prompts on scereen and choose a default install
I have seen quite a few hits concerning problems with performance over 1Gb for Linux such as having to enable Highmem support in the kernel - however I have not seen any instruction how to check or do this - any ideas ?

Your two 512M sticks are undoubtably well matched and live comfortably together. Hopefully they did actually use dual channel mode.
Your 1G lives well on its own as well
However for the greater than 1G, ie 1G + 0.5G you may be using 2 sticks that do not live well together and are causing isses with delayed response. (At worst can only 0.5G is being recognised - (use grep MemTotal /proc/meminfo if necessary to check) ). In general issues seem better with DDR2 than with earlier memory in this regard. I suppose timing with memtest86 might be an interesting metric. I must admit myself i'd prefer to use 1g+1g or even 2g + 2g (i know on 32bit I might not see it all) rather than 1g+2g or 1g+0.5g.
Anyway what I am trying to say is that hardware should not be eliminated as a possible cause at this stage.

  • [845 Series] Adding 1gb of Ram to the MSI 6507 MB.

I have just attempted to add 1gb of ram (PC2100 DDR 266MHz CL2.5) to my MS6507 MB. When I go to power up my system nothing happens, the system only starts working again when I remove the new stick of ram. I have a 512mb stick in the other slot.
I have checked and the MB supports up to 2GB of ram. Any ideas why this is not being picked up??

I have tried the 1gb stick in both slots. SPD is set in the bios, I had previously been using 512 and 256 sticks in the two slots. Basically trying to find out if I have been sold a faulty stick of ram or if its not compatible with my MB (MS-6507). I have checked the MB spec and it says it can take up to 2GB of ram so am pretty sure that compatibility is not the issue??

  • Questions after adding 1GB of RAM

    I just installed 1GB of RAM, and I have 2 problems/questions.
    1. The new RAM is not showing up in the "About this Mac". However, my iMac is running noticeably faster. Do I need to to something to correct this?
    2. Also, since adding the RAM, there is no startup tone. I have checked the volume and restarted the computer several times with no change.
Are the two situations connected? Any suggestions?

I just found the solution/answer to both issues, and it was an easy one. To be sure that I had a proper connection between the RAM and the computer, I removed the RAM and reinstalled it.
    Problem solved!

  • Is 1GB RAM enough?

I will soon be using my MBP (2GHZ, Core Duo, 1GB) for recording work in a Studio Composition major at school. When I bought my computer this past summer, Apple told me 1 GB of RAM would be a good amount for me. I think I will be running protools mostly but considering Reason and others. Everyone now has made 2GB RAM the standard. I mean, the only other thing I use that isparicularly intense is the occasional game of halo or the sims 2.
    Do I need more?
Also, I have two 512 sticks right now. I've heard it's best to keep them in even pairs. How much would it cost to upgrade to two 1 Gigs? Would I just ebay the 512s? how much could I get?
Thats if I even need it! AYYY!
    Thanks in advance.

    products7074740,
It is true that using "matched" pairs of DIMMs increases the maximum memory bandwidth. By "matched," what is meant is that the two DIMMs are of equal size and specifications (it is not necessary that they be from the same manufacturer).
In some cases, more benefit might come from having more total memory than would from a slight increase in maximum bandwidth, thus the practicality and ability to install 3 GBs.
IMO, 1 GB of RAM is sufficient for OS X, and usually sufficient to prevent significant "swapping" (which would actively slow your computer) for most uses, but it is not enough to actively speed your computer.
This only comes from having enough RAM to enable the maintainance of a large amount of "inactive" memory. This is memory that caches frequently-used instructions and data, and it greatly speeds the response of applications.
In the past, I would recommend at least 1.5 GBs. Since it is now beneficial to install DIMMs in pairs, providing an additional (slight) boost in speed, I recommend installing 2 GBs.
Here is the "kit" I recommend you purchase.

  • MUSIC-RAM ENOUGH?

    HI,
I'm thinking of purchasing a macbook 1.83ghz,and upgrade the memory until 1GB.......I would know if this amount of memory is enough for me.....I will use the macbook for recordings and doing some live stuff,I would also do something with Imovie like save my camera videos...but nothing professionally.....I need this computer to do my music projects.....so will it run fast with 1 GB of ram?
Can you tell me some memories of 2GB that cost around 150$?
Here in italy I've found something on ebay made in hong kong but it don't seem very serious..I've also found good prices in the newegg web site but they don't ship products internationally so........thanx a lot....I find this forum more helpful day after day...

Buy the 2 gigs - it's only another $75 - the best investment you can make for your macbook.
I put 2 gigs in mine the day I received it, and what a difference from the standard 512.
    Also, it is recommended that you install RAM in pairs (2 256 = 512 / 2 512 = a gig / etc.
So get two 1 gig sticks, and you won't (shouldn't) regret it.
Here is where I bought mine (lifetime warrantee) - read ALL the reviews:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820231069
Also, I see that you are a PC person. With you new macbook you can run Parallels Desktop WHILE running OS X - so you will want more ram to run both OS's at the same time - both OS's fly with 2 gigs.
